Pierre Kezdy was a staple of the Chicago Punk scene for more than 25 years. Beginning in the early 80's with Strike Anywhere Kezdy made his mark with his distinctive bass playing and melodic songwriting. His work with Naked Raygun across classic albums from 1986's “All Rise” through 1990's “Rayun…Naked Raygun" would cement his legacy and joining ex-Raygun guitarist John Haggerty for several Pegboy albums further confirmed the high regard that he was held in throughout the Windy City. We sadly lost Pierre to cancer in 2020. He was only 58. To celebrate his life through the music of Naked Raygun a number of Chicago area bands put together this compilation to support his late wife and children with all proceeds going to the family. You can contribute and help support the Kezdy family by buying it on BandCamp: https://godspeed-tribute.bandcamp.com/album/godspeed-a-tribute-to-pierre-kezdy-of-naked-raygun. RIP Pierre. Sunny Day are a necessary part of any conversation about the Emo genre. Their debut record Diary (1994) is arguably THE time capsule Emo record; completely essential for anyone looking to explore the genre. What's great about SDRE, though, is that their entire discography is diverse, interesting, and – most importantly – very good. In the sixth episode of Barely Human, we look back at punk and hardcore through the lens of two artists who have been footnoted by mainstream histories. First we look at the London punk explosion through the eyes of Poly Styrene and her band X-Ray Spex, who went from selling kitsch anti-fashion accessories on Kings Road in 1976, to playing punk on Top of the Pops two years later. Then we turn to '90s hardcore heroes Los Crudos, a band who had the mission of putting culture into their sub-culture, by playing punk music in their local community halls, and singing entirely in Spanish. Barely Human is written and hosted by Max Easton, and produced by Jason L'Ecuyer and Output Media. Bhopal Stiffs strikes close to my heart. They were the first band Screeching Weasel played with in Chicago, outside of our suburban homes. We played at a 21 and over club that was called Batteries Not Included. There was barely an audience there to see either bands but when Bhopal Stiffs got on stage their energy, music and commitment blew me away. They are first on my top two punk shows that I have ever seen.
