Welcome to the second part of the three-volume Episode 1000 anniversary episode, recorded at live events held at four locations throughout the greater Chicagoland area. My original idea was to combine all the interviews and performances into one single release. As fate would have it… it's just too much content for one single episode, so I decided to break it up and make it more digestible. For this episode, recorded at Skeleton Key Brewery in Woodridge, Siren Records in McHenry, and Liar's Club in Chicago, you'll hear (and see): Theme song creator Josh Caterer from Liar's Club. An interview with returning favorites wht.rbbt.obj from Siren Records. Comedian Mike Stricker with a comedy set from Skeleton Key. Herb Rosen, owner of Liar's Club. A blistering performance and fun interview with Bellhead from Liar's Club. And a rock and roll story from author Steve Silver. In between segments, you'll also get to enjoy messages from former podcast guests, sharing their Episode 1000 greetings. This time around, that includes Dr. Daryl Wilson of the Bollweevils, Sincere Engineer, Todd Sucherman of Styx, Take the Reins and award-winning journalist Charlie Meyerson. ## CCC is sponsored by Easy Automation. It's not out of bounds to say that the Smoking Popes began as a bit of a joke. Vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Josh Caterer deems the earliest incarnation of the band as “a Spinal Tap version of hardcore punk,” choosing song titles first and how those songs would actually go later. But after finding a propulsive drummer in a teenage Mike Felumlee, the quartet began showing true heart around 1993: no longer just goofing off in the garage, Caterer was penning some of the punchiest, most direct odes to lost love on the college radio dial, emphasizing all the best parts of the Smiths, Cheap Trick, Roy Orbison and the Ramones, while feeling wholly original. It's now been three decades since Born To Quit, the band's heroic half-hour featuring “Need You Around” and “Rubella,” put them on the map. And although an LP reissue dropped earlier this year (without the band's consent or knowledge), Josh and Mike decided that the Popes needed their own “Taylor's Version” of sorts, in order to take these songs back into their possession — even in the most modest of terms. So before a minimal audience in a small, central Illinois studio, the band chose to cut Born To Quit live, front to back, and a vinyl version comes out this week to put a stamp on the occasion. During this episode, Josh and Mike speak to their longevity as a unit, what we can expect from their brand new album this spring, and what it meant to control Born To Quit's legacy a bit, with this new approach. We also dive into Mike's tenure in Alkaline Trio, and Josh's solo performances pressed to wax during the 2020 lockdown. John San Juan (Hushdrops, Josh Caterer) joins me for a chat in advance of his solo show happening December 29 at the Hideout (also featuring Outronaut and Depravos De La Mour). We talk about the status of Hushdrops (all systems go!), newly-recorded music, Spinal Tap, John's potentially-AI-created band member, and the Hushdrops “hit” that may not make it to the solo show. This wasn't the interview I'd set out to have with Smoking Popes frontman Josh Caterer. Smoking Popes were set to play an early slot on Day Three of Riot Fest; unfortunately the weather had other plans for the band. Flash flooding in the Chicago area forced Riot Fest organizers to push back the door time from 1pm - 3pm. As a result, a handful of earlier bands were 86'd from the line up, including the Popes. I ran into Josh as he got the text to say that a force majeure had forced them off the schedule. Shortly after that, we sat down for an interview, three hours earlier than originally planned. While the weather thwarted the Popes (their legion of fans), we can feel excited about what's ahead, including lots more new music! I love having Josh on the show; I'm a fan of his music and him personally. Car Con Carne is presented by Alex Ross Art. Visit Alex Ross on YouTube! Among the many bands bringing excellent power pop/punk to the mainstream in the 90s, floating slightly above the rest were Chicago's Smoking Popes. Probably best known for their song "Need You Around" featured on the Clueless soundtrack, the band released some excellent albums there for a while that stood out thanks to the power of the riffs and the unmistakable croon of Josh Caterer. Once Josh converted to Christianity, he felt he couldn't continue in the same way, so the band went from top priority to secondary. They continue to put out strong material, just on their own schedule. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut, Get Fired was just released on vinyl for the first time with a couple bonus tracks, including a surprising cover. Josh and I get into all of it. Enjoy! www.smokingpopesmusic.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

Naked Raygun is one of the greatest bands to ever “whoa whoa” their way onto a Chicago stage, and their influence continues to loom large on the generations that follow in their footsteps. With that, a new Raygun tribute compilation is on the way: “Godspeed… A Tribute to Pierre Kezdy.” Scheduled for release on July 28, the album features NR covers from the likes of Face to Face, and J. Robbins. Also featured on the comp are a “who's who” of former Car Con Carne guests, including Josh Caterer, Pegboy, the Bollweevils, the Methadones, the Brokedowns and Death and Memphis. All proceeds from the project go to the family of Pierre Kezdy, who passed away in 2020. The guys behind the compilation, Curt Harrison (the Usuals) and Pat Mineau (Grey Trash Aliens), jumped in the car to talk about putting the project together, as well as the impact of Naked Raygun's music. Oh, and there's food in this episode … wonderful food from the recently-opened Rogue's Corner in Elgin (109 E. Highland). Owner Matt Habib shared a handful of his pizza originals, including Pipe n Wrench (Italian beef, sausage, giardiniera) and Jury Rig (Mac & Cheese + Sloppy Joe). Matt was also comfortable and happy to offer his thoughts on Naked Raygun; he's a fan just like the rest of us. Naked Raygun will do a rare signing event at Rogue's Corner on August 26 at 1 p.m., where they'll sign “Godspeed” records and merch. ### Car Con Carne is proud to be sponsored by Alex Ross Art (alexrossart.com). Josh Caterer is best known as the lead singer of legendary Chicago pop/punk band Smoking Popes. In 2021, he released a pair of lockdown-inspired solo albums, “The Hideout Sessions” and “The SPACE Sessions.” Hailed by fans and critics alike, the Chicago Reader said, “One of the distinctive characteristics of Caterer’s sound has always been the contrast between his choirboy vocals and the crunch of his band, and the allure of that approach has never been stronger.” The First Time is hosted by Jenn Sodini. Produced by Bobby Evers and Julie Mueller. Podcast produced by Andy Vasoyan and Jenn Rourke. Recorded by Tony Baker.

Episode 122: Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes (1 of 5 interviews exploring the whole band and record Born To Quite originally released in 1994) talks to us about Born To Quit and then things spiral off into multiple directions at once including Producer Phil Bonnet and onward into Jerry Finn, Crooner or Poet or both or none, The structures of Old Standards, Irony and National Guilt, The Self and Others, The arduous journey to the songwriting of Pretty Pathetic, the yearning and the path to God, plus much much lofty, friendly, kindly, and laughable more much more.
Faced with an indefinite touring hiatus, Josh Caterer improvised. The musician recorded a pair of “live” albums – The Space Sessions and The Hideout Sessions. No audience, no overdubs – just a trio of well-rehearsed musicians putting new spins on old classics. Caterer's vocal range tends toward crooner as many of the song veer into jazz territory. That's nothing new, of course. His unique vocal delivery is a major piece of what set Smoking Popes apart from their pop-punk brethren in the 90s, finding fans in everyone from Green Day to Morrissey. Caterer joins us to discuss his journey through the height of the 90s music industry crunch, to connecting with religion and reforming the Smoking Popes.

Zig At The Gig with Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes Josh Caterer is an American, Chicago-area musician, best known as the lead singer, lead guitarist, and principal songwriter of pop-punk band Smoking Popes, which he founded in 1991 with his older brother Matt and younger brother Eli. Josh has also written and recorded Christian and gospel music as a solo artist and with the pop-punk band Duvall. In 2015, he founded the blues band Jackson Mud Band, which has released one full-length album called "Stranger Blues". Back in early 2020, Hushdrops, the long-running Chicago-based power trio (John San Juan on guitar and vocals, Joe Camarillo on drums, Jim Shapiro on bass) were slated to go into the studio to finish work on what would become their third full-length record. Then in what's become a recurring theme on this show, plans were put on hold due to the onset of Year One of the pandemic. While that part of the story is certainly not unique, the story took a sharp and unexpected and tragic turn a year ago. As Year Two of the pandemic kicked off, Camarillo was hospitalized for a stroke and a heart attack. While in the hospital, he suffered and ultimately succumbed to a brain stem stroke. At only 52, the literal backbone of the band was taken much, much too soon. After some time, San Juan and Shapiro decided the best way to honor their longtime friend and collaborator was to pull together the album that they'd been working on prior to the pandemic. The problem, obviously, is that it wasn't done yet. As fate would have it, there was a soundboard recording of one of the band's last pre-lockdown shows, a set that included a few new tracks that were intended for the new release but that hadn't made their respective ways to the recording studio yet. What followed was the fascinating (to me, anyway) challenge of recording studio guitar, bass and vocals over the isolated live performance drum tracks for two songs that ended up on the album, creating what is a very unique feel to both those tracks and the album in general. We were lucky enough to catch up with John San Juan to talk about all of this and more. It was the first time we talked, although we've talked about him on a few episodes of (*both laugh*) to date, as he plays bass in the trio that Smoking Popes' Josh Caterer put together for the pair of live albums that he released as bookends in 2021. We talked a lot about Josh, and about Joe, and about mellotrons, and all things in between. The good ship (*both laugh*) keeps sailing along with our 48th episode, and it features one of our only repeat guests to date. He's the owner of one of my favorite voices in the pantheon of punk rock, and he's also one of my favorite songwriters and one of, in my opinion, the most underrated guitar players in the scene. A triple threat! Anyway, he's the inimitable Josh Caterer, and if you remember back at the beginning of 2021, we chatted about what was to be his first solo release, The Hideout Sessions. It was an album recorded in front of a live stream online audience at an otherwise empty club in Chicago, and it marked the first real appearance of any sort by this particular project, which featured Caterer on guitar and vocals, John Perrin on drums and John San Juan on bass. To mark the release of that album this spring, the band played an album release show, but because all of the clubs were still closed to the public, they did it via live stream and recorded it as an album...AGAIN! If you're keeping score at home, that makes not one but TWO live albums recorded before actually playing a show in front of an in-person, human audience. The result of that latter show is The SPACE Sessions, due out next week (December 17th) on Pravda Records. It was recorded at - you guessed it - at SPACE in Evanston, Illinois, and like The Hideout Sessions, it features an interesting mix of songs from Caterer's catalog (via Smoking Popes and, yes, Duvall!!!) and some standards that you might otherwise think of as from the big band era, because they were popularized by the likes of Judy Garland and Sammy Davis Jr. and Elvis Presley and, in the case of "At Last," which happens to be my wedding song...Etta James. The set also closes with Caterer being joined on vocals by his daughter, Phoebe, for an updated take on "Somethin' Stupid," popularized by Frank Sinatra and his own daughter, Nancy. If been even tangentially aware of the punk scene over the course of the last three decades, you're of course aware of a legion of bands that have covered songs from outside the typical punk rock milieu, but they've done them with a fair amount of tongue planted firmly in cheek, as in "oh, isn't it funny/ironic that we're playing this song this way!" Sometimes it works great and sometimes it's a gag that tires after the first few listens, much like a comedy album. What's different about the old standards that Caterer et al., take on is the appreciation that the band has for the source material, paying considerable homage in their modern retellings. Anyway, I'm rambling (I know, right?)...if you liked The Hideout Sessions, you'll love the SPACE Sessions. I'll add pre-order links when they're available (it'll be available digitally and on CD next weekend but the vinyl will have to wait until...who knows, honestly. Friggin' Adele...). Catch the Josh Caterer Trio (along with the Sunshine Boys) live and in person: December 16th at SPACE in Evanston, IL December 17th at The Lyric Room in Green Bay, WI December 18th at the Back Room at Colectivo in Milwaukee, WI https://joshcaterer.bandcamp.com/music https://sunshineboys.net/ https://www.pravdamusic.com/ (*both laughs*) theme song is an excerpt from [laughs] track "Hurts To Laugh." © KALI MASI 2021 ℗ Take This To Heart Records 2021

For this week's episode, Lauren Ruff, Assistant Vice President and Marketing Director with Ixonia Bank sits down with Matt Spransy, the organizer behind the locally-renowned Magic Mansion Concert on the Porch events. He is taking his winning formula for producing music events to create the family-friendly Twilight Concert Series at Fowler Park. We learn from Matt why he does these events, his hopes for how they can further put Oconomowoc on the map, and how much the musicians LOVE performing here. In this episode, he shares some tracks featuring Josh Caterer & The Jackson Mud Band. Josh sings with his band both original and classic scorching blues with golden throated vocals and killer guitar chops. Josh Caterer is also a member of the Smoking Popes, who appeared on the movie soundtracks "Clueless", Tommy Boy", and "Angus," opened for Green Day and Weezer, toured with Jimmy Eat World, and Morrisey. Josh says "I see Jackson Mud as a natural progression from the Smoking Popes. When the teen angst of punk rock grows up, it turns into the blues.” See Jackson Mud Video on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNAbe_1zPT0You can see Josh Caterer and the Jackson Mud Band in person on Sunday, July 11, at 6:30PM at Fowler Park. Make sure to bring your own chairs and blankets, and bring your own drinks and food. If interested in attending Twilight Concerts @ Fowler Park, visithttps://www.twilightconcertsoconomowoc.com/ or follow on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TwilightConcertsOconomowoc*********Unable to make it July 11th? Matt also has lined up Jason Eskridge for Sunday, August 8 at 6:30PM. When he's not touring with the Zack Brown Band or Lyle Lovett, or being on call as one of the top session singers in Nashville, Jason does a thing called Sunday Night Soul with some of his session player friends down in Nashville. A typical Sunday Night Soul show features a wide array of soul, funk and R&B. The end-of-the-night jams can go on for 10 minutes or more, with smoldering grooves undergirding spiraling solos and improvisation, all spiked with familiar riffs and melodies from Motown, Stax and Muscle Shoals. Now he is bringing Sunday Night Soul to Oconomowoc! Josh's Info https://joshcaterer.bandcamp.com/ https://twitter.com/joshcaterer https://www.facebook.com/joshcaterer/ https://www.instagram.com/joshcaterer
Josh released three albums and some EPs in the 90s with his brothers as the Chicago-area punk band Smoking Popes, then became a Christian and released an album and a half as Duvall, then reformed the Smoking Popes to release three more albums since 2008. He's also released some religious material as a solo artist, and his new album is composed of live covers of classic songs and reworkings of his own material. We discuss "Need You Around," originally from Born to Quit (1995) and re-arranged for The Hideout Sessions (2021). We then turn to the Popes' "Amanda My Love" from Into the Agony (2018) and Duvall's "Taking Me Home" from Volume & Density (2003), and we conclude with another new recording, "My Funny Valentine" (Rodgers/Hart). Josh Caterer is our guest. And he's got quite a story. He started a band with two brothers which became the Smoking Popes. They decided to let Josh sing because he was the best at singing and playing while not looking at his hands. They quickly went from recording 18 songs in a day to opening for bands like Green Day. There's a funny story about that. But with all that success came a pretty big fall in the form of a cocaine overdose. Josh survived and found a new purpose in his Faith. But trying to integrate that into his music was a challenge. After forming Duvall, forming his occasional blues band Jackson Mud, and then returning to Smoking Popes, Josh is releasing a new live solo album. It's a mix of Popes songs and cover songs. “Lost And Found" One summer in the early '90s I drove around with only one cassette in my car and that was Born to Quit by the Smoking Popes. Led by the Illinois-born Josh Caterer and his brothers Eli and Matt, the band were nothing short of a revelation. Josh’s lilting vocals has all the elegance of Sinatra and the finesse of Morrissey, but it also had muscle. The songs? Good god—I mean, the album only clocks in at 28 minutes but the songs were so timeless and unique, you could cycle through it 50 times and repeat listens never chipped away at the brilliance of the tracks, it only reinforced that you were listening to a stone cold classic. The Popes tore it up—they toured with Green Day, Jawbreaker and Morrissey, had a bit of a hit with "Need You Around,” had their songs appear in movies like “Clueless" and "Tommy Boy" and found Morrissey himself declaring that he absolutely loved the band. Over the course of their career the Popes have put out seven albums, played massive gigs, like Riot Fest in 2016 and though they’ve broken up, gone on hiatus and reformed, they remain one of the most enduring outfits out there. As for Josh, you’ll hear a lot about him in this interview, but Josh has founded other bands like Duvall and the Jackson Mud Band over the years and his new album The Hideout Sessions is a live gig that was recorded in Chicago in October of 2020. Raw, powerful, intimate, and rousing, The Hideout Sessions finds Caterer pushing his voice in ways he never has before—he’s always been a great singer, but the evolution of his voice is on full display here—there’s a new layer of intensity and fragility that makes this live document incredibly moving. In this conversation we talk about the faulty Spotify model, the ‘90s, Jawbreaker, having COVID and why being found brings real understanding to being lost.
Pravda Records has been a part of the independent music scene since the 80s, with a mighty talent roster including names like Matt Wilson, Josh Caterer, Wake Ooloo, Green, Cheer-Accident, The Slugs, New Duncan Imperials, The Diplomats of Solid Sound and Susan Voelz. I caught up with Pravda head Kenn Goodman tonight to talk about the label, the business and our shared love of music.

One of the finest and most distinctive singer songwriters to emerge out of—well, fuck, take your pick. Chicago? The ‘90s? Punk rock? EVER??? There's simply no one quite like Josh Caterer and his band (the) Smoking Popes. Josh and Scott have a long (if low-key) history together and this episode barely scratches the surface. But until a Josh episode #2 comes along, this one will have to do. Topics touched on include: Josh's new Covid-live record (THE HIDEOUT SESSIONS), Paul Stanley monologues, the Bee-Gee-ness of the Caterer brothers, Scott's hot sauce holster, and why the Popes classic THIS IS ONLY A TEST is the best concept album since THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. EDITOR'S NOTE: Yes, I know the audio says it's Episode 29, but I recorded a couple out of order, so it's technically Episode 30. Glad we cleared that up. What do you do if you're stuck in pandemic-related shutdown and your band has to put plans on hold indefinitely? If you're Smoking Popes frontman Josh Caterer, you record a live album at an empty bar in Chicago with a few guys you've never played with before! For the project, Caterer teamed up with John San Juan of the Hushdrops and John Perrin of NRBQ, and the trio took over the Hideout in Chicago for a night in late October. The resulting album is due out later this month on Pravda Records!
All of us have a story with twists and turns, and Josh Caterer is no exception. Growing up in Chicago he started a band called the Smoking Popes. After finding commercial success on the punk rock seen, Josh hit rock bottom when he overdosed after a show. That set him on a path that ultimately led to Jesus, church, and a new relationship with music.
Singer-songwriter Josh Caterer recorded a new solo album with several Chicago area musicians.

If you remember the Smoking Popes, it's probably thanks to their Buzzbin / Clueless soundtrack single "Need You Around." Lead singer Josh Caterer got tagged as punk-rock Morrissey, and while the band continued on, many were left with the impression that the Smoking Popes were something of a novelty. As we dug into this album for the first time, the realization quickly set in that the early Morrissey comparisons were way off base, as both Caterer, along with his brothers Eli and Matt, and drummer Mike Felumlee, are significantly less punk than expected. Sure, you can hear the energetic down strums of Ramones across the record, but instead of 90s pop/punk, the band channels the likes of Wings, The Smithereens, Buddy Holly, Frank Sinatra and more in their quest to write exquisitely arranged pop-rock gems. I opened Car Con Carne up to anyone who wanted to talk about being sheltered-at-home. The only catch was everyone who talked had to recommend a movie to watch. Bonus: Returning champion Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes had a surprise for us all!

Car Con Carne favorite and theme song creator Josh Caterer returns to the show after Smoking Popes delivered yet another phenomenal show, closing out the first annual T1 Fest at the Forge in Joliet. This episode is sponsored by C&H Financial Services. Discussed on the show: Caterer brother/Smoking Pope Matt Caterer uses stage performance as his sole exercise regimen. #GOALS My mistaken identity situation with Matt Caterer. My ongoing mispronunciation of Popes drummer Mike Felumlee's surname. Why do people spoil setlists for themselves? Dan Vapid crashed the podcast! The art of mixing a setlist with old and new songs. I wouldn't blow smoke up Josh's ass. We recorded on the "good side" of Joliet. The band's live set was a little "loosey goosey" that night. Josh was in Apocalypse Hoboken for a minute. Secondhand smoke at the Forge damn near killed me. Why on earth haven't people been eating on Car Con Carne lately? The next time I interview Josh, it'll be in Lombard and it'll be for breakfast.

Before she plays Riot Fest 2019 in Chicago, Sincere Engineer (Deanna Belos) joins me for tacos outside Tacos Garcia on W. Armitage. Discussed this week: Playing Riot Fest this year. Any nerves involved? NEVER. READ. THE. COMMENTS. The curse of the corn dogs. Are they to Sincere Engineer what mac & cheese is to Barenaked Ladies? Sincere Engineer's best cheerleader? Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes. If you're gonna get a Skee-Ball machine, you have to also get a prize redemption center. Deanna's a very "normal" person. Car Con Carne will never go to Chuck E. Cheese. Where does Deanna stand on profanity? Denis Buckley of 88 Fingers Louie likes to watch. I may have had cilantro on my lip. I'm broadcasting from Riot Fest from 9/13-9/15. Deanna needs to visit me in the media area. Deanna first heard me when I interviewed the Lawrence Arms on the Zone. No one listened to the Zone! Car Con Carne is presented by the Autobarn Mazda of Evanston

Few have heard of Josh Caterer's first band — Speedstick — but after a name change and a swap of drummers, that band, now The Smoking Popes, quickly made a name for themselves in the early '90s Chicago punk scene. The Smoking Popes toured relentlessly, signed to Capitol Records and even appeared on the Clueless soundtrack. The band would break up in 1998 after four studio albums but reunited in 2005 and have put out an additional four albums, including 2018's "Into the Agony." Caterer recently invited My First Band host Tyler Maas into his on-the-market home in Elmwood Park, Illinois, just outside of Chicago. The 47-year-old front man, who is also a worship pastor at a nearby church, updated fans on his current projects before discussing coming up in a musical family along with his two bandmate brothers, discovering punk rock thanks to his cousin's record collection and learning that his ability to hear a song and almost immediately play it on guitar was unique. Caterer also discussed the benefits and pitfalls of stalkers, the influence traditional pop singers had on his singing style, and a special moment he shared with the other Smoking Popes on the roof of Capitol Records. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing and is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth (“The Junction Street Eight Tigers”) and The Smoking Popes ("Simmer Down").
Two guests! Two live performances! Amazing! To wrap up 2018, Hi Ho (Gillian McGhee) and OUTDrejas joined me for conversation and live performances inside a CX-5 on the showroom floor of The Autobarn Mazda of Evanston. It was an amazing day for the podcast, and a thrill to record at the Autobarn Mazda of Evanston. We'll definitely be doing this again! Here's what you'll hear in this episode: Hi Ho segment LIVE PERFORMANCE: "WHISKEY SHEETS" TOPICS: Gillian's 101 Dalmatians sweater and its long history in her wardrobe. What would Gillian eat, if we were allowed to eat in a new car on a showroom floor? The evolution of Hi Ho and Turnspit. Hi Ho took a backseat to Turnspit for a while. GILLIAN'S IN A LITERAL BACKSEAT. OMG. Gillian's moment on stage with Rise Against ("I sobbed for 20 minutes afterwards"). "Were you a fat five-year-old?" What's up with that t-shirt that has Gillian's young emo face on it? Gillian's upcoming west coast tour ("basically not men"). Gillian beat me to my Dad joke. OUTDREJAS segment LIVE PERFORMANCE: "WE'LL FIGHT THE FIGHT" TOPICS: OUTDrejas is the only band who would tolerate having the "Santa" filter added to our Facebook Live. OUTDrejas does an awful cover version of the podcast theme song. Sorry, Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes. Why are there no clams? I spent the weekend with OUTDrejas. I don't know if I can explain what OUTDrejas is. David Drejas is a MASTER of "The Office" trivia. The secret origin of OUTDrejas. The differences between the Vietnam War and OUTDrejas's travel itinerary. There were no parades when OUTDrejas came back, either. How can we further the Chicago scene? "Promise" is a must-hear OUTDrejas song. Recording in the CX-5 is a spiritual journey. OUTDrejas's web domain is seriously, no joke, not making this up... F___thepackers.com

Naked Raygun is simply one of the greatest bands to emerge from Chicago. They helped define the Chicago punk sound in the 1980s with a handful of timeless albums and legendary live shows. Proving there is still justice to be found in the world, Raygun's legend is still being discovered and the band's catalog is finding its way into a new generation's streaming playlists. Of course, it doesn't hurt that one of the band's most high-profile evangelists is Dave Grohl, who frequently shares the story of seeing Naked Raygun back in the 1980s at the Cubby Bear in Chicago. In the present day, an against-the-odds, resilient Naked Raygun is ready to teach a punk rock master class. Along with Smoking Popes, Raygun will be opening for Jawbreaker on 11/4/18 at the Aragon in Chicago. Frontman Jeff Pezzati joined me at Hollywood Grill (1601 W. North) in Wicker Park. Over brunch, we chatted about: Dave Grohl's unabashed affection for Naked Raygun: "Dave Grohl can't set foot in Chicago without mentioning Naked Raygun." The Chicago scene of the 80s: "You knew everybody... it was a very close-knit community. You didn't like everybody, but it was close-knit." The Wrigleyville of today is waaay different from the Wrigleyville of the 1980s. Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes has "the voice of an angel." The draw of a rural, simpler life. What Naked Raygun has in common with the Velvet Underground (apologies to Brian Eno). The thought process when Raygun reunited for Riot Fest in 2006. Raygun has new music recorded, but there's no urgency to get it out. Does Jeff consider his legacy? Easiest way to get to the main floor at the Riviera? Jump from the balcony. A harrowing moment Jeff had at the old Exit location on Wells. Now that Jeff's no longer the "angry young punk," what inspires his songwriting? The sensual and erotic world of the Amish. Jeff has a solo album waiting to happen!
Naked Raygun is simply one of the greatest bands to emerge from Chicago. They helped define the Chicago punk sound in the 1980s with a handful of timeless albums and legendary live shows. This week, Car Con Carne (sponsored by Boost Mobile) makes a trip out to Tinley Park to visit the exceptional 350 Brewing Company (7144 183rd St, Tinley Park, IL 60477). Owner Todd Randall and Director of Marketing Justin Maynard jump in the car (with room to spare to talk about: The superior Wi-fi we're using in the car. It wouldn't be pirated from a neighboring location; it has to be 350's Wi-fi. The brewery's four-year history: Was the original vision what 350 Brewing became? The punk rock spirit that informs the brewery's vision and oversight. The menu's punk-inspired items: Reel Big Shrimp, The Fireside beer cheese and potato soup, etc. The throat-kick cauliflower: The only way to eat cauliflower. 350 Fest 4: August 25, with Descendents, Less Than Jake, Wilhelm Scream, MEST, Sincere Engineer and Burn Rebuild. Info: https://350brewing.com/350fest4/ Todd is a self-described "south side dirtbag." WHY IN THE EVER-LOVING HELL IS JUSTIN WEARING A BLUE LATEX GLOVE IN THE CAR? Fuckin' LaCroix. Philanthropy: "Burn your butthole for charity." Denis Buckley from 88 Fingers Louie pops in at the 29:00 mark to make a special announcement: 88 Fingers Louie will be playing "Back on the Streets" in its entirety at Reggie's on 8/24! "No glove, no love." Denis Buckley gets competitive about gunning for most-frequent Car Con Carne guest: "Suck it, Josh Caterer!"
Chicago band-on-the-rise, 101 WKQX Piqniq artist and regional Next2Rock finalist, Marina City jumps in the car for a wild, delicious romp through the menu of recently-opened restaurant City Barbeque in Berwyn (7108 W. Cermak Road Ste B2, Berwyn, IL 60402). Let the record show: The food at City Barbeque is amazing. I'm already planning my next visit. I loved it all, but especially the ribs and collard greens. This episode is presented by BOOST MOBILE. City Barbeque's magnificent "Motherload," which includes every imaginable smoked protein. I needed to have the chicken removed from my plate out of necessity. Piqniq on June 30: Marina City is on the bill with AWOLNATION, Dashboard Confessional, Greta Van Fleet and more. The feeling of being part of this year's Piqniq line-up. The Next2Rock competition and Marina City's "mic-drop" moment. "The things that backseat has seen... " Marina City has seen the previous dearth of napkins in the Mazda 3, and planned accordingly. The crisp, clean smell of moist towelettes. Why our dinner interview could seem like a murder-suicide. The sweet scent of Marina City. Josh Caterer gets more praise for the "Car Con Carne" theme song. More praise for the vinyl format. I'm hooked. Why is the cassette resurgence a thing? The Marina City sound: Pop-smarts and dark edges. "There's no light; it's very very dark and depressing." "It's a payoff when you arrive at the light." "I was like, dang, get it." The collard greens ("we can say we had a vegetable with dinner!") Why Marina City is like a fluffer. The joy that banana pudding brings. "I'm literally just eating to eat right now." A dude sprinted past the car like a criminal. Wait... was he a criminal? The interview lasted forever, only because it took so long to eat all the City Barbeque food. New segment: TRASH RUN! "I look distinguished as I'm eating a mountain of banana pudding in the front seat of my car." The moment when Marina City vocalist Ryan saw my reaction after the band's Next2Rock performance.

My favorite restaurant on earth is Epic Deli (2616 Schaid Ct, McHenry, IL 60050). I couldn't resist going there with Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes, who recently helped create the "Smoking Pope" sandwich for Epic. Our plan for the night was for me to try a Smoking Pope and for him to eat a JVO. It sounds weird, but it's not. We accomplished our goal, but ate a lot more than planned. A LOT MORE. And we have Tyler Wildey, owner (and former CCC guest), to thank. He kept bringing us Epic Deli food to try. It was too much for any stomach to contain, but we approached the challenge with the courage and fortitude of Olympic medalists. Everything was stupidly, wonderfully delicious. And I was adequately full for a full 24 hours afterward. Before we ate, Josh played some songs in the backseat of the Mazda 3: An acoustic version of the "Car Con Carne" theme song, the new Smoking Popes song "Simmer Down" and the Jackson Mud song "It's Nothing." This is a fun one with some of my favorite people. Hope you enjoy listening!
Chicago's Smoking Popes are one of my seminal favorite bands, having released several crucial albums of lovelorn power-pop including 1994's Born To Quit and 1997's Destination Failure. Gaining notoriety via soundtrack appearances on films like Clueless, Tommy Boy and Angus, the band split up at the turn of the century, reformed 11 years ago, and have since added a few more proper full-lengths to their catalog while focusing their performances primarily around the Midwest. Recorded on a rainy night in his church office, singer/guitarist Josh Caterer -- now a pastor of music and worship -- discusses the influence of his father's record collection on he and his bandmate brothers, getting the first few Popes seven-inches pressed, the process of reissuing Born To Quit on vinyl, astonishing interactions with both Morrissey and Dave Grohl, the new EP Black As Midnight from his blues-focused band Jackson Mud, and so much more! PLUS Josh graciously performs two songs LIVE and exclusively for Vinyl Emergency! Follow @joshcaterer on both Twitter and Instagram, and visit SmokingPopesMusic.com and JacksonMud.com for social media, live dates and more info on both bands.
This episode is a Car Con Carne first: A live-to-tape in-car performance, courtesy of Smoking Popes lead singer Josh Caterer! While parked in the lot of The Texan in Algonquin, Josh plays a couple of Popes songs, a song from Jackson Mud (his blues band), and a couple of "instant request" cover songs. The conversation is casual and winding, managing to cover the entire history of Smoking Popes in the process. Bonus: James and Josh also go deep on "yacht rock" (think Little River Band)!
We talk with Josh Caterer, singer of Chicago's punk legends the Smoking Popes.
