This episode marks the debut of a new organizational principle for the program, that being themed "wind it up and let it go" episodes, each devoted to a genre, a band, a sound, an era, a set of related records - or whatever. I make an intro, I get out of the way, and the music does all the talking, as it were.I'm starting with a "re-run" that's only about 6 months old - Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio #219 from July 2024, where I played nearly 90 minutes of the finest punk rock music from greater Los Angeles, California and 1977-1982 that you'll ever hear. Let it be a tribute to a place that is really suffering right now, as I write, but that has been the locus of many incredible music scenes for decades. It's been called the most shocking American youth movement in history. When it stormed out of the gates in the 1970s, punk rock told the world that the way things are is unacceptable. The people that defined the scene spit in the face of conformity and the social order, and they did it with humor, irreverence and musical brutality. The punk scene in Los Angeles was (and still is) home to some of the most iconic personalities of the genre, and was led by bands that defined it as they was simultaneously transcending it. Here in TOP TEN L.A. PUNK BANDS Part 2, we wrap up our conversation with the mensch of the hour Severo, who brings his musical insight and wit to the proceedings as we reveal picks 5-1 .If you missed picks 10-6 and the fun we had in Part 1, check it out here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-611-top-ten-l-a-punk-bands-part-1-w-severo/id573735994?i=1000651767216If you still haven't gotten enough L.A. punk, check out this awesome Spotify playlist featuring every song heard in Parts 1 & 2:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5txY59JXatz8rMYWitfbE6?si=cb69807f94e14c4bIf you don't know Severo, know him. It's bonus episode time. In today's Special Features episode Felicia is joined by Charles Forsman and Joey Gantner to discuss the only punk sci-fi film that matters, Repo Man (Alex Cox 1984). We chat about how Alex Cox not only made one of the most important films about punk culture but how he was able to successfully infuse other genres to make it a complete story. Along with how members of the LA Punk community came together to create an authentic piece of cinema that continues to grow more of a cult following over the years. Gina Schock steps back Behind The Rope. Gina is here to chat about what it is like to be part of the most famous, successful and every other adjective you can think of girl group of all time, The Go-Go's. Gina talks early Go Go days in the LA Punk scene of the late seventies and early eighties, making their breakout first album, “Beauty and The Beat”, the height of their fame, subsequent albums, “Vacation” and “Talk Show” and the ultimate demise and initial break up of the band. Gina talks about the much publicized drug use of The Go Go's band members, the wild antics and nights and separates fact from fiction amongst the many tall tales and public stories. Gina reminisces about the many makes ups and breaks ups throughout the decades, the on again - off again touring and how the original members - Belinda, Kathy, Jane, Charlotte and herself have achieved the near impossible remaining family and sisters though it all. Gina explains how the musical “Head Over Heels” came to be, their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, working with Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez and her undying admiration and love for one Mr. Harry Styles. Finally, Gina dishes on what being a bad a$$ girl drummer means, what is next for the band and how this almost five decade long journey has been captured in her brilliant photo book “Made in Hollywood”! As broadcast April 14, 2023 with plenty of extra groans. Tonight we welcomed Matt Scotch (no way that's a real name, get outta here) and Hank Smith (also fake, obvioiusly) from the LA-based UGHH, which is the newest band on the illustrious Poor Man Records roster. These two obvious alias users kicked their band mate out of his own house then joined us for an interview and playlist selection of their favorite tunes while we highlighted the joints from their new 7" single. It was a lot of fun, although Danno went home and changed the locks to his house immediately, it must be duly noted.Tracklist:Part I (00:00)Motorhead – OverkillDrinking Boys & Girls Choir – Linda LindaOtoboke Beaver – S'il vous plaitRUMKICKS – Punk rockerYura Yura Teikoku – YURA YURA TEIKOKU DE KANGAECHU13Steps – We Turn DownKegawa No Maries – (injung) Part II (31:28)Jerry Reed – Amos Moses X – Dancing with Tears In My EyesM.A.M.I – Chico EmpresarioPigeon – RelentlessDry Cleaning – Scratchcard LanyardBicurious – I Don't Do Drugs I Just Sweat A LotPart III (58:45)UGHH – THE LENSBria – Don't Come Home A-Drinkin' (With Lovin' On Your Mind)Macrodose – Bury the SimsSuper Structure – DespairThe Nerves – Many Roads to Follow (demo)Motorhead – Love Me Like A ReptileFastway – Stand Up Part IV (93:25)UGHH – SICKKing Woman – GolgothaSlender Gems – Bring It All Back HomeLIIEK – DynamiteViagra Boys – FrogstrapGEL – Mental Static

This week Alan and Stephanie -- joined by Steph's husband Bob Perry -- chat with Theresa Kereakes, one of the 150 or so core members of the original LA punk rock scene. Theresa began taking photos at a very young age, and by extension, she chronicled the early LA punk scene with her camera. Her famous photos were used on many of the punk albums from that era and have been shown all over the country in an exhibit called Unguarded Moments: Backstage and Beyond. They also appear in three coffee table books: Punk 365, The Official Punk Rock Book of Lists, and a history of the Bomp! label and magazine. Join us as Theresa brings us back to those early days of the scene with some wildly entertaining stories and insider details that you've never heard before. She tells stories about her encounters with Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Blondie, The Bangles (when they were still called The Bangs), The Go-Go's, X, The Ramones, The Damned, and many others. Active in the early Los Angeles punk scene. Making music in Dublin in the '80s and '90s and finally about her experiences in her current life in the Mojave Desert where she now calls her home next to Joshua Tree National Park. At the end of the first episode, we hear Desert. A song performed by her former band The Screech Owls."I am a magpie of sorts as all the best people are." she likes to paraphrase Lewis Carrol.Show is a graduate of The Art Institute of Seattle and London City and Guilds Art College and a guitarist and singer from The Screech Owls. The band began as a duo of Debbie Schow (AKA Skow, an American based in Dublin) Richard Evans (AKA Dik of the Virgin Prunes) originally known as the Kid Sisters. The "Desert" Single was self-released in the 90s and distributed by Rough Trade.ArTEEtude is West Cork´s first art, fashion and design podcast created and produced by Detlef Schlich. Schlich operates with his podcast cross-sectorally. For him, a visual artist has to think transversely instead of just enjoying the luxury of being the antagonist. To drive the narrative and to be a protagonist, he will dive and discover with us into the unknown and exciting deep ocean of the creative mind. Detlef Schlich is Podcaster, Visual Artist, Film Maker, Ritual Designer and Media Archaeologist, living and loving in West Cork and best known for his Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culture and the video installation Transodin´s Tragedy. He is mainly working in the field of performance, photography, painting, sound, installations, and film. To research our human condition and create artwork from this reflection he is using often the methodology of the digital shaman as alter ego. His media archaeology is a conceptual and practical exercise in carving out the aesthetic, cultural, and political singularities of media in culture.WEBSITE LINKSInstagram Debbie Schowhttps://www.instagram.com/debbieschow/Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/DebbieSkhowScreechOwls/?ref=page_internalETSYhttps://www.etsy.com/people/goodnesssakesDetlef SchlichInstagramDetlef Schlich ArTEEtude I love West Cork Artists FacebookDetlef Schlich I love West Cork Artists Group ArTEEtudeYouTube Channelsvisual PodcastArTEEtudeCute Alien TV official WebsiteArTEEtude Detlef Schlich Det Design Tribal Loop Download here for free Detlef Schlich´s Essay about the Cause and Effect of Shamanism, Art and Digital Culturehttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/303749640_Shamanism_Art_and_Digital_Culture_Cause_and_EffectSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/arteetude-a-podcast-with-artists-by-detlef-schlich/donations
This episode of Forward Filmmaker features Akira Boch. An LA-based, Emmy-winning filmmaker, Boch has been directing shorts, documentaries, and music videos since high school. His films reflect his strong ties to his Japanese heritage and passion for music. Among them are the PBS documentary Masters of Modern Design: The Art of the Japanese American Experience, as well as Atomic Café, which delves into the 70s LA Punk scene, and The Crumbles, an indie-rock comedy about an up and coming band. He discusses all of this, with an emphasis on how he infuses music and culture into his work. -- Forward Filmmaker is brought to you by Filmhub, the distribution platform where thousands of independent filmmakers distribute and monetize their titles directly to streaming services – without giving up their rights or dealing with the traditional distribution pain points and middlemen.

Fishbone’s eclectic mix of Funk, Punk, Ska and Metal hit its commercial peak with 1988’s Truth & Soul. Not as gritty or chaotic as previous releases but unmistakably Fishbone. In honor of the great Tom Petty's 70th Birthday, and mere weeks before the U.S Presidential election, Rock N' Roll greats Frank Meyer and Eddie Spaghetti have unleashed a musical surprise on the world. Join us, as Spaghetti & Frank discuss 'Jammin Me', a cover of the late Tom Petty addressing the chaotic political climate as the country enters the final weeks before Election Day. In their own segment, we talk first to Eddie Spaghetti and then to Frank Meyer, each telling us in detail about the song, their life and their career. Originally released in 1987 and co-written by Bob Dylan and Mike Campbell, “Jammin' Me” was a scathing takedown of the culture and society at the time. With some updated lyrics, Spaghetti and Meyer express equal contempt for the current political climate. Make sure to stream 'Jammin Me' NOW wherever you stream your music.

Welcome to another trivia challenege episode, this time with the Raging Nathans of Dayton, Ohio! Round one questions are all about 1980’s Los Angeles punk rock and hardcore. Round two questions are all about 1980’s and 1990’s Epitaph Records bands and Round three is sorta-kinda a mix of the two topics. There are four songs by the Raging Nathans off of their new record “Oppositional Defiance” in this episode, in this order - Signals, Stargazing, One Day Closer To Death and Spoiled Brat. What you REALLY need to here is the intro audio drama/comedy that is a play on the Dragnet TV series of yesteryear. Brought to you by Plan 9 Alehouse, Rad Girlfriend Records and Red Brontosaurus Records.
We had the pleasure of interviewing CrowJane over Zoom video! Mater Dolorosa, “Our Lady Of Sorrows”, the incarnation of Mary pierced through the heart with seven swords, is a fitting title and matron for the solo debut of CrowJane. LA Punk Legend Paul Roessler (Screamers, Nina Hagen, 45 Grave, Deadbeats), after becoming close friends with CrowJane while recording her band Egrets On Ergot, could see that she was in the grips of the kind of crushing woe that’s so often the seed of hard-won transformation. Suspecting the rewards that awaited if she would risk shining a light on her own murk, Roessler took matters into his own hands, and all but locked her in his studio, Kitten Robot. Surrounding her with every available musical instrument, a pen and some paper, he compelled her to face the rawness of loss, abuse, and addiction. When the palette of existing tones were no longer a match for the depths they plumbed, they were forced to coax new sounds out of impromptu homemade instruments - metal bed frames, kitty litter, crumpling foil, containers of water and whatever else was around. Together they hacked through tangles of psychic resistance and dredged toxic marshes for sunken personal horrors. One by one, using fresh alchemy invented on the cuff, they opened old wounds and from them extracted Mater Dolorosa’s 10 eerie pearls. The path they carved together led through a twisted maze, the obstacles so frequently daunting that the project took years. During that time CrowJane helped bring Egrets on Ergot local acclaim, became “Sally” and “Nurse Heather” in the twisted cabaret of The Deadbeats and, most recently, the unhinged front woman of quizzical LA sonic terrorists, Prissy Whip, whose Swallow LP Roessler also recorded and mixed. Using music and a deepening connection to life’s unseen component CrowJane has spent the last several years building and rebuilding better versions of herself from the ash of shed skins. The 10 songs on Mater Dolorosa almost perfectly mirror and chronicle this long ascent towards wholeness. Coming from a visual art background of surrealism and horror, she has simultaneously built a career as a professional horror effects makeup artist. This unlikely background helped foster an outsider musical sensibility that is perfectly balanced by an encyclopedic knowledge of the byways and back roads of punk and death rock, both historic and in LA’s contemporary underground music scene, of which her bands have been an integral component for the past 10 years. As a part of these utterly distinct and uncompromising bands she has developed a reputation for shattering expectations, both in her choice of collaborators and her contributions to the collaboration. Although this pedigree informs the haunting tracks on this solo debut, those familiar with her explosive and provocative live performances will likely be blindsided by the soft vulnerability and nakedness of Mater Dolorosa, the arrangements of which allow her no place to hide and nothing left to do but forgive the past.Check out her video for debut single "Terminal Secrets" for a taster: We want to hear from you! Today Paco and George are joined by Dakin Hardwick to recap the new Showtime documentary The Go Go’s. Notably the first all-femme band to write their own songs, play their own instruments, and snag a #1 US album. Directed by Allison Ellwood, this straightforward music documentary looks at the LA group's rise, reign and breakup, along with youthful ambition, firings, drugs, rehab, money squabbles, breakup, and inevitable reunions.Dakin Hardwick is the one of the founders of Spinning Platters, a website started by a small group of Bay Area based music fans. He was not a writer before starting this blog, and honed my craft in the public eye. The blog is still alive and well after a decade on the internet, even managing to continue to put out content during the COVID crisis. In addition to managing the blog, Dakin has managed to work in music his entire adult life, starting out as a clerk at Wherehouse Music, interning for both Universal Music Distribution and Six Degrees records, and then working at Ticketfly throughout the entire lifespan of the company, then eventually landing at Eventbrite, working on their Music venue product up until the COVID pandemic wiped out the industry, causing the company to let go a large percentage of it’s staff. Dakin, along with fellow Spinning Platters founder Gordon Elgart, occasionally hosts music trivia in San Francisco.Dakin currently lives in Oakland, CA, and is hunting for a full time day job while raising his 1-year old daughter, making sure she understands the importance of listening to music that will alienate her from her peers.Dakin's new podcast How Did I Get Here?Follow Dakin on:Twitter: @vagueofthronesInstagram: @friedoxygenFollow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.
Minutemen, New Alliance, fIREHOSE founder and LA Punk legend Mike Watt has lived a life of music and stayed true to his roots. Today he discusses the early days of the Minutemen, SST Records, New Alliance records, his decade of playing with Iggy & The Stooges, his recent project Fitted & more. If you like records, just starting a collection or are an uber-nerd with a house-full of vinyl, this is the podcast for you. Nate Goyer is The Vinyl Guide and discusses all things music and record-related.
There have been, so far, only two positives from this pandemic that I can see. One, Zoom technology has finally lead to the long delayed question, “Wait, all this time I could have been doing your podcast from my house???” Turns out yes! I don't see that going to the how we did it, “In The Before Times” anytime soon. The second cool thing has been the release of ALPHABETLAND by X. John Doe, Exene Cervenka, Billy Zoom and DJ Bonebrake formed X in the heyday of the late '70's LA punk scene. Their first album, Los Angeles, was released in 1980, and they quickly made an indelible mark on American music. I love ‘em and I always have. Now I had heard, being a fan and all, that they were recording some stuff, and I naturally assumed it was a one-off for a soundtrack or somesuch. But them, on the 40th anniversary of the release of Los Angeles, Bandcamp announced that the album ALPHABETLAND was available for immediate download. The huh the whaaaaa? So I bought it, sat down to listen. And I knew it would be good. But, you know, it's their first album in 27 years. I was prepared to grade on a curve. No need. It. Blew. My. Socks off. From the first cut to the last, it is a 27 minute punk rock fist to the solar plexus. tt starts out great, it never lets up and it ends with a flourish. Now many of you may recall that last year Mr. Doe and our mutual friend Tom De Savia were kind enough to invite me to moderate the panel for the book More Fun In The New World, which is the second installment of their two part oral history of LA Punk, the forst being Under The Big Black Sun, both available where fine books are sold. Tom was kind enough to make a call and I am very happy to say we have John Doe and DJ Bonebrake on the podcast today to talk about the album. So let's get right to it. https://DanaGould.com

Episode 5 of Barely Human looks at two characters who pushed and crossed boundaries in the name of antagonism. We start at the birth of L.A. punk to find Black Randy: a mysterious and eccentric musician who spent as much time pranking and tormenting his peers as he did appropriating soul music. Then we turn to GG Allin: someone whose artistic mission as a punk frontperson was not just depraved, but criminal. Barely Human is written and hosted by Max Easton, and produced by Jason L'Ecuyer and Output Media. The first wave of punk rock growled out of the economic and social malaise of New York and London in the mid-1970s. But Los Angeles played a huge role in what came next, when punk's energetic D.I.Y. ethos began to diversify, cross genres and sprawl like the vast city itself. One of the groups that sprouted in that time was the seminal punk band X. Three years ago, X's singer and bassist John Doe and music publisher Tom DeSavia pulled together first-hand accounts of the nascent scene from members of LA's tight-knit punk community. The resulting book, Under The Big Black Sun , was nominated for a Grammy.

David Messier is a multi-talented artist and music industry powerhouse based in Austin, Texas. A Trustee of the Recording Academy, Messier is an accomplished producer, entrepreneur, singer and songwriter hailed as “ a hurricane force of music.” He has served as President of the Texas Chapter of the Recording Academy and as a Governor of the Academy. Messier was the front man of the Boston-based band Papermoon, and after moving his studio and himself to Austin and working both in music and in philanthropy, received the “Austin Under 40 Award” in the category of Arts and Entertainment. He recently released his new album, the self- reflective Time Bomb, which took only 22 days to write and record at his recording studio in East Austin, Same Sky Productions. Always alert to music and the workings of his lyrical mind, the album’s guitar heavy title track is based on a Wurlitzer lick from one of Messier’s many phone recordings. The Living Roomers , a new punk band comprised of Tru, Lucky and Rico, started in the living room of the band’s home in LA in late 2017 and just self-released their first single, “Screw You” along with a video for the track. Influenced by the Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Ramones, Velvet Underground, X, The White Stripes, Joy Division and Courtney Barnett among many others. The trio calls their title song, “Screw You” a call to action. It pushes back against those who try to put people, women in particular, in boxes, something totally foreign to the fresh sound and deep energy of this trio making a name for itself in LA.
One of LA's legendary Punk bands, The Furys, have returned to the music scene with a vengeance!
