Last week, mid-show in Milwaukee, my mic stand took a nosedive. (Fine, maybe I kicked it during André's filthy solo. The man shreds—what do you want from me?) But here's the thing—I didn't stop. Michael Caine once gave acting advice: “Use the difficulty.” So that's what I did. I didn't fix it. I used it. Because that's the difference between a recital and a show. One chases perfection. The other turns chaos into gold. Live performance is alchemy. In this episode, I share one of my most embarrassing live music stories, I dig into Michael Caine's advice, a little philosophy on stage-craft, and some thoughts from my buddy Dan Rodriguez on what it means to actually perform.
Jackie Chan says “Ding Ding” on set to remind his crew: stay sharp, keep moving, no dead time. I've been thinking… maybe life needs more of that energy too. Less waiting, more intention. Urgency, not the panic kind, but the alive kind. The kind that reminds you you're here to do something. Ding ding, let's go.

Now that the election is done and dusted, and we've had a chance to process somehow one of the least controversial presidential races of the last few decades, America's back to business, with Congressmen threatening international institutions, the American public spending gobsmacking amounts of money for the holiday season, and California declaring a state of emergency over bird flu. Wait a second—can states even do that? Lucky for us, today's podcast guest is an expert on state and local government law and state constitutional law who's written a book on the very subject. We're thrilled to welcome back the Harold Washington Professor of Law at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, Daniel B. Rodriguez, to discuss his new (open-access!) book Good Governing: The Police Power in the American States. Ever wondered what the terms sic utere and salus populi mean? We kick off the podcast discussing those two different approaches to the police power of the states. Rodriguez expounds on his thesis about the development of state police power by discussing all the state cases he's read, and why legal scholars focused on the federal courts usually get things wrong. Next, we discuss the different kinds of checks that exist on state power: structural, rights-based, and democratic. We then turn to the interplay between police power on the one hand, and the state and local government relationship on the other. (Sam's out for this one, so you know we really get into the weeds of state and local governments.) Finally, we wrap up with Rodriguez's argument for why state capacity is a problem of state constitutional law and good governing. This podcast is generously supported by Themis Bar Review. Send Kira a text message! As a music director, Dan Rodriguez knows how critical inclusion is in theater and the arts. It's critical in often unseen places like the pit, where you'll find musicians, vocal performers, and the music director. Music directors tend to be with production processes the longest, which means they understand and have a unique position of influence within a show. In this conversation, we discuss Dan's journey into theater, the importance of trust between performers and music directors, vocal health, and how Dan supports transgender actors. In this episode of Status Check with Spivey, two experienced and respected law school Deans—Craig Boise, Dean of Syracuse University College of Law, and Daniel Rodriguez, former Dean of Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law—discuss the history, the present, and the future of law school admissions and legal education. Their conversation covers a range of topics, including problems with the LSAT, the recent test-optional proposal to the ABA, the impacts that the U.S. News law school rankings have had on legal education (and their thoughts on the new methodology changes), and a new pathway to law school admissions, JD-Next. You can find basic information on JD-Next, as well as a list of schools that have been granted variances to accept JD-Next in lieu of another admissions test (LSAT or GRE), here. Craig Boise is the Dean of Syracuse University College of Law, where he is currently completing his final year in that role, after which he will be working with colleges, universities, and law schools as a part of Spivey Consulting Group. He is a Member of the Council of the ABA Section on Legal Education, previously served on the ABA's Standards Review Committee and the Steering Committee of the AALS's Deans' Forum, and served as Dean of Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. He holds a JD from the University of Chicago Law School and an LLM in Tax from NYU School of Law. Daniel Rodriguez is a current professor and former Dean of Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. He served as President of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) in 2014 and served as Dean of the University of San Diego School of Law from 1998 to 2005. He holds a JD from Harvard Law School. You can listen and subscribe to Status Check with Spivey on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, YouTube, and Google Podcasts. How often do you think about how you felt as a teen? Do you have one around? Remember the moodiness? I knew it all!!! Yet, no one understood me. I felt empowered by my friends because there were not many adults around that did. Having a teenager in the house has sparked my intentionality and curiosity as a parent...am I doing this right? Am I the only one that feels challenged? I have a basic story to share about that, but also some extra encouragement from some friends. So give it a listen. You will be blessed. Pamela Lundstrum is a member of the Cultural Centre of Bird Island, which brings fine art to central Minnesota, south of Willmar. The center is offering an exhibit by wildlife painter Bradley Donner called “Wild Art,” which continues through the end of the month. Donner explains on his website that he enjoys going to the “wilds of northern Minnesota, Canada and the Driftless trout streams of southeast Minnesota and Wisconsin” to research art. “I am so excited about the newest exhibit,” Lundstrum says. “It's very exciting to see something that is just so beautiful and so perfect. And we only have to go to Bird Island to see it.” “Wild Art” will be on display at the Cultural Centre of Bird Island through April 22. Bonnie Stewart is the executive director of the Fosston Community Library & Arts Association. She is looking forward to attending performances by singer/songwriter Dan Rodriguez, who she calls “an amazing performer. He's a talented musician. He writes his own songs, he sings beautifully. And he is probably one of the most engaging entertainers.” Rodriguez was raised in Detroit but moved to Minneapolis at age 18 to study music. His varied career includes the song "When You Come Home,” which played as part of a Budweiser commercial during the Super Bowl in 2014. “He just brings joyful, new, awesome music,” Stewart says. Rodriguez will play at the 318 Cafe in Excelsior Saturday. Annie Deutsch of Minneapolis recommends artist Sadie Ward, whose exhibition, “Midwest Women” will be on display at the Second Floor Gallery in Coffman Memorial Union in Minneapolis. Ward “has been making portraits of women throughout history out of bras,” Deutsch explains. “Brart. You put ‘bra' and ‘art' together.” The works are of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Michelle Obama, and Jane Goodall among others. “Her first one that kind of inspired it all was Anna Dickey Olson, who was the first woman from Minnesota to run for Senate.” “Midwest Women” runs through April 23, with a reception Friday.
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit davidlat.substack.comIn almost thirty years of following the world of U.S. legal education, from applying to law schools in fall 1995 to covering them today as a journalist, I don't think I have seen as consequential a time as the current one. To explain the whirlwind of recent developments, I sought out two of my favorite observers of the legal academy: Dan Rodriguez, former dean of the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, and Anna Ivey, former admissions dean at the University of Chicago Law School. When I asked them to join me, I selected as our topic the U.S. News law school rankings—specifically, the withdrawal of dozens of schools from the rankings, followed by the announcement of significant revisions to the rankings methodology. But it's impossible to discuss the rankings in a vacuum, so we wound up having a wide-ranging discussion that touched on two other possible major changes—abandonment of the LSAT (or any other test) as an admissions requirement, and an end to affirmative action—and the future of legal education more generally. How do Anna Ivey and and Dan Rodriguez really feel about the U.S. News rankings? As former rather than current deans, they spoke freely and didn't pull their punches. And are they worried or hopeful about what lies in store for U.S. law schools? Find out, in this new installment of the Original Jurisdiction podcast.

Monday doesn't disappoint with fresh ideas and challenges to kick off the new week. Today we're talking about the future of MSRP and the Dealer's role in new car sales, Honda making moves in the CPO space, and consumer indicators in air travel are a sign of the times regarding employment. It's a good day to make some trouble. What will Dealers do when Invoice and MSRP are identical? Could it really happen? When Cardi B sang about making money moves in Bodak Yellow, she must have had chef Dana Rodriguez in mind. Chef Rodriguez is plenty busy with her two existing concepts in Work and Class and SuperMegaBien as well as the highly anticipated January opening of her newest project Cantina Loca. That would be more than enough for most people but chef Dana isn't like most people, she is “loca,” as her nickname describes her. But we think she's crazy like a fox. “Loca's” most recent move is to team up with the new owners of Casa Bonita. The creators of the TV show South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, know talent when they see it. Making chef Rodriguez an offer she couldn't refuse to be executive chef/partner of the “Disney Land of Mexican restaurants” was an easy decision for duo. Revamping the defunct Casa Bonita won't be an easy task though, but chef Dana is up for the challenge. In this episode of The Modern Eater chef Dan Rodriguez visits with Greg Hollenback to talk about what it's going to take to put Casa Bonita back on the map as a destination Mexican Restaurant in Colorado. “Change nothing and improve everything” seems to be the motto as this dream team barrels forward with lofty goals for the end of summer or fall reopening of Casa Bonita. But with all the changes in the works one goal remains clear for chef Dana… MAKE THE FOOD BETTER. How is she going to do that? You should probably tune in and find out. Steven Quigley, by age eight, was already an entrepreneur with his first business. He has traveled the world extensively, living in many countries, meeting people and collecting experiences that would later form his future. Before first having spent many years in South Asia, he eventually settled into a sales position on Wall Street. It was not long before he was back to business, eventually creating his own consumer finance firm, before his meeting with the express train – that changed everything. After a long journey inward, including recovery and healing from quadriplegia, he has re-emerged a new man, and is currently learning to walk again. He was enrolled as a graduate student at University of Pennsylvania until he withdrew to write his first book, Unbreakable Mind. As a result of that life changing journey, though some would say a natural fit, he is now an author, international speaker and wellness coach.Steven Quigley - Additional Resources:Book:Unbreakable Mind: Channeling your Survival Instincts after Catastrophic InjuryWebsites and Blogs: Doing the Dirty Dishes Doing the Dirty Dishes - Spanish Travel Blog Spiritual Blog Social and Media: Instagram Twitter YouTube channel --------------Music courtesy of Dan Rodriguez:"The Allies Theme" by Dan Rodriguez

SELWYN JONES BIO Born in 1966 to sharecroppers in the Jim Crow South, Selwyn Miles Jones was the youngest of seventeen children. In the small town of Goldsboro, North Carolina, Selwyn, and his siblings toiled alongside their parents in the tobacco fields and endured the most desolate and harsh conditions imaginable. The poverty, disrespect, hatred and disenfranchisement Selwyn and his family experienced was unimaginable to most, yet commonplace for many Black farming families.Selwyn realized early on that sharecropping was yet another version of enslavement. His mother made sure to show her children that there was a better life out there for them and encouraged Selwyn to dream big. Selwyn was determined to leave through any means necessary. His athletic prowess provided him with his ticket out. Through a short but intense arena football career he was able to find financial solvency and fulfilled a childhood desire to purchase a home for his mother. Though life continued to be filled with challenges (Selwyn lost three close family members tragically, including both his parents) he went on to become a successful salesman, hotel owner and father with his dynamic wife Jodie. Then on May 25, 2020 Selwyn’s life was forever changed. While watching the news, along with the rest of the world, he witnessed the unmerciful murder of his 46-year-old nephew, George Floyd. “It was the most horrific thing that I ever witnessed in my life.” As George Floyd’s murder ignited the largest civil rights protest in US history, Selwyn Jones became an activist. Every day Selwyn commits to ending police brutality and systemic racism and bringing justice to his nephew’s senseless and cruel murder. Known affectionately as Uncle Selwyn Jones he promised “I will not let his death be in vain. I do not want my sons or anyone else to go through what my nephew endured for that 8 minutes 46 seconds. I want to be a beacon of light for those who face racism or adversity in this life.” He continues his personal growth by positively enhancing the lives of others in his work as a community & civil rights leader. On this special episode of the Futurum Tech Podcast - Interview Series, host Daniel Newman welcomes Dan Rodriguez, Vice President Network Platforms Group and GM Communication Infrastructure Division at Intel to discuss the proliferation of 5G, network platforms, and the impact COVID-19 is having on technology. Intel's Response to COVID-19 The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clear that technology is an essential part of our lives and how we conduct business. Intel has pledged an additional $50 billion to help support the use of technology for patient care, online education, and scientists who are searching for a cure. Intel employees are essential workers who are keeping the networks and technology up and running so we can continue to function on a personal level, business level and global level. COVID-19's Impact on 5G Networks Prior to the pandemic, the big topic in networking for 2020 was 5G. Despite the current macroeconomic uncertainty, Dan shared that most of Intel's customers and partners are continuing with their planned pace of 5G deployment. Networking and the infrastructure needed to support the advancements of the technology are critical. We are seeing a lot of governments worldwide recognize the need for this critical infrastructure and many are including the support for infrastructure in stimulus packages. Our current infrastructure has been essential for how economies are able to sustain during this crisis. The work that intel has done has been paramount to keeping our economy running, business operating, and students learning. Industry Response to COVID-19 Intel works with a lot of cloud and communication service providers. These customers have made small adjustments in their networks and will likely make more adjustments as demand and traffic on the networks continues to increase. Besides the immediate changes, many customers are focused on building out infrastructure to support what's coming in the future. CoSPs are preparing for 5G. Businesses are preparing to utilize the next wave of compute infrastructure — edge technology. Dan shared that companies are ramping up their investments in 5G and edge computing in a big way — and it shows. Intel's Investments to Unlock the Full Potential of 5G In February, Intel announced new products and investments that have showcased their broad portfolio from both a silicon and software perspective. Unlocking the full potential of 5G requires network transformation and Intel is ready to drive this forward. The first announcement was additional investments to the Xeon Scalable platform which is the foundation of many networks worldwide with over 30 million units sold. Dan shared that in addition to enhancing the architecture and CPU, the company has also made adjustments to other platform ingredients that go around it like ethernet controllers. Intel has also made significant investments in many open source communities like Linux Foundation DPDK and CNCF. These investments and contributions really enable the core networks today, as well as the future. The company has made continued progress on the journey of network transformation with virtualization. Last year 40 percent of all core network deployments beame virtualized. By 2024, Intel expected that number to be 80 percent which will be fueled by 5G investments. Intel also announced the Atom P5900 platform, the first SoC built from the ground up to meet the needs of a Radio Access Network including low-latency and high-bandwidth. This platform will deliver what's required for 5G base stations today and in the future. The final significant announcement, the Intel Ethernet 700 Series Network Adapter, will give radio access networks the additional functionality needed to handle the latency requirements across 5G network implementations. Customers need to invest in networks that have the end-to-end architecture that can support the increased demand from 5G and other emerging technologies. With these new announcements, Intel is a leading provider in base stations going forward working with customers to meet the new demands. If you'd like to learn more about Intel's announcements, products, investments or their response to COVID-19, visit their website.
