Daniel shares words of wisdom and hope to people with all kinds of disabilities. He is an inspiration. As you listen to his story you will see the love of Jesus all over his life. Daniel wants people to see him for him and not the wheelchair. He has many quotable statements in this podcast but one that stuck out to me was he changed his why question to how. He learned to not ask why but "How can you use this in me."Daniel Carroll is a husband, pastor, and aspiring para-athlete.Professionally, Daniel is passionate about fostering positive spiritual, organizational, and relational health in churches.Personally, Daniel works to use his disability as a platform to share hope with others who find themselves in difficult situations, and to challenge people to find their strength and courage in Christ. Daniel lives in Central Virginia with his awesome wife Sarah, who works as a local coordinator for Child Evangelism Fellowship- a non-profit ministry that aims to bring the Gospel to kids through after school programs and church partnerships. Together, they work to inspire others to live up to the calling that God has placed on their lives, through conversations about ministry, marriage, and mobility.Support the show

On this episode of Todd Talks, Dr. Todd Still sits down with Dr. M. Daniel Carroll Rodas, the Scripture Press Ministries Professor of Biblical Studies and Pedagogy at Wheaton College, to discuss his work in Biblical Studies.
In this pixel-packed extravaganza we're diving into the realm of Mobile Suits, futuristic warfare, and enough Gundam drama to make soap operas blush. Yes folks it's time to chat about the PlayStation 2 game “Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo,” a game that had us pressing buttons faster than a cat chases a laser pointer. But wait, there's more! We've got a guest star shining as bright as the final boss battle. Joining us in the digital cockpit is none other than the fabulous Dan Carroll, captain of the Retro Wars podcast and a connoisseur of all things vintage gaming. Imagine Han Solo, but instead of navigating the Millennium Falcon, he's steering us through the vast universe of Gundam lore. So grab your favorite joystick, charge up your beam saber, and get ready for a rollercoaster ride through pixels and panels as we explore just how well “Mobile Suit Gundam: Journey to Jaburo” stacks up against its manga counterpart. Spoiler alert: of all the games that exist, it's certainly one of them. Learn such things as: Should developers and publishers target games for new fans or the fan base that already exists? Why didn't Japan share the big bulky robots with us more? Are these even robots? I mean, come on, there's a pilot in there! And so much more! You can find the guest on Twitter @Retrowarsuk and eventually on YouTube as The Honest Pokemon Trainer. But always at the Retro Wars website. Democrats are pro-choice and Republicans are pro-life. Right? According to Ryan Burge it's not that simple. He says a closer look at the data reveals more nuance to the issue, including a significant number of Black and Latino Democrats who are strongly pro-life, and pro-life Republicans who support traditionally progressive social policies. In a post-Roe America, the abortion issue is getting a lot more complicated. Then, Skye talks to Old Testament professor M. Daniel Carroll about a theology of immigration. He says that before Christians adopt a political policy about immigration they first need a biblical vision of immigrants themselves. All of that, plus smashing pumpkin records. Episode Notes Logan continues his profile of Costin Alamariu. In part one, we looked at his life. This time, we dig into his book and his project. It's a doozy. We go to gross places in this show, and this episode has got Clockwork Orange-level grossness. It's grodie--to the max. There's a more detailed trigger warning before we get to anything to rough, though. Seriously, maybe just pass on this one. We open on the horrors of nuclear winter, close on the collapse of journalism, and the part in between is the bleak part. There are three very pleasing tidbits, though: 1) Myles gives us an update on ex-Proud Boy head-honcho Erique Torrio's legal trouble. 2) There are chuckles aplenty. 3) Theme song by Daniel Carroll with Wesley Mitchell on drums, and bumper music by St. Cloud-based Don't Look at Me from their album Give a Cluck. 10/10 would buy again. Smother us in love! Rumble us a slow pennyfarthing!
The history of humanity is the history of migration. People have always been on the move, in Scripture and in the modern day. Understanding the migrants near us, their experiences, and the languages they speak can equip us to love them better. M. Daniel Carroll R., author of Global Migration and Christian Faith: Implications for Identity and Mission, explains our biblical obligation to love the foreigner, which includes not only people from a foreign country but also those with different socioeconomic backgrounds or even just very different life experiences. What can preachers learn from prophets? In this episode, Matt Woodley explores that question with Danny Carroll, Professor of Biblical Studies and Pedagogy at Wheaton College. Carroll said “Prophetic preaching means speaking truth in the public square. But it also requires a certain kind of integrity, a knowledge of the world that we live in.” He also indicated that for prophets in the Old Testament, being prophetic often had implications for worship. He was born and raised in Houston, Texas. Carroll's mother raised his family bi-lingual and bicultural, so they visited Guatemala every summer. Later on, he taught at a seminary in Guatemala City for thirteen years. To emulate the Old Testament prophets, pastors can emulate prophets' behavior or preach their message. Carroll also recommends pastors begin preaching from the Old Testament. “We need the prophets as a moral compass and we lost it, and now we're beginning to pay the social price for having silenced and ignored the prophets” he said. This is the last episode for 2020, and the podcast will be on a season break, as I take a break and am in production for a new season in 2021 (publishing end of April). Thank you to all my amazing guests in 2020, and to all the listeners who have continued to listen in a very challenging year.Today's discussion is a fascinating talk with my guest from Zurich, Switzerland. Juliane Gluge and her team spent over a year writing her PFAS Uses paper, "An Overview of the Uses of PFAS," and compiling very detailed extra material to go with her paper. The paper was peer reviewed and accepted for publication in the Environmental Science Processes and Impacts Journal on the 23rd of September, 2020. Juliane is a Senior Researcher in the Environmental Chemistry Group at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, called ETH Zurich and this is one of the largest universities in Switzerland. She has done her PhD under the supervision of Martin Scheringer. She studied Biotechnology in Germany, so by training is an engineer in biotechology. She is an environmental scientist who has worked on sources, fate and transport of persistent organic pollutants, including PFAS. There are so many PFAS uses that I had no idea about until this discussion, including PFAS in ammunition, climbing ropes, guitar strings, contrast agents in MRI, and other medical applications. Juliane and her team provide three extra ESI - Electronic Supporting Information documents which are well worth a look, especially ESI-1 which expands on the uses listed in the Appendix of her main paper.I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation, and I know you will too, and there will be plenty of information for your to look at while Talking PFAS is on a break. One of the word of the year lists last year consisted of xenophobia, a "fear or hatred of foreigners, people from different cultures, or strangers." In light of the worldwide migration, and of the fear associated with immigration, it is not surprising. But is it biblical, is it the appropriate response of a believer, of an Evangelical? Interestingly, one of the biblical commands is the opposite of this, evidence in the term philoxenia, a "love for strangers or foreigners; hospitality, kindness to strangers." Join us as Dr. Daniel Carroll explains the response of believers in an increasingly xenophobic society.
I found myself seated at one of two long dining tables set with Limoges china, silver knife rests, crystal glassware and candlesticks that looked like something out of the Disney movie “Beauty and the Beast.” The setting was a dinner in the formal dining room of Chateau de Laprée, the home of Edouard-François and Sarah de Lencquesaing, that dates back several centuries, and has been inhabited by the same family all these years. The dinner was a celebration of a successful weekend for the nearby town of Saint-Omer in northern France. The town was marking the 275th anniversary of a young American boy’s arrival at the College of the English Jesuits in Saint-Omer. The boy was Daniel Carroll, one of the few Catholic Founding Fathers of the fledgling nation. A delegation of Catholics came from Baltimore to mark the occasion and foster ties between the Old and New Worlds. The group included Baltimore Archbishop William E. Lori, three priests from the Baltimore Archdiocese, descendants of the Carroll family, and two American journalists, myself and my husband, Christopher Gunty, editor and associate publisher of the Catholic Review in Baltimore. The town of Saint-Omer pulled out the stops for the delegation, from afternoon tea, to a black-tie gala celebrating the reopening of the Jesuit Chapel as an arts center, to a roundtable on religious liberty, an issue near and dear to Archbishop Lori. The weekend prompted a closer look at the history of the boarding school, and three students who went on to shape the United States. In 1742, because of the suppression of Catholic schools in the American Colonies and in England, 13-year-old Daniel Carroll was sent from his home in Upper Marlboro, Md., to the boarding school in Saint-Omer. A few years later, his brother, John, and his cousin, Charles, made the two-month journey across the Atlantic to join him. If the names sound familiar, they should. Daniel Carroll of Rock Creek was one of five people who signed both the Articles of Confederation and the U.S. Constitution. John, who became a Jesuit at age 18, was the first Catholic bishop in the United States as bishop of Baltimore, the Premier See that included all 13 colonies. He also founded Georgetown University. Charles Carroll of Carrollton was the only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence and he was the first U.S. senator from Maryland. Chatting with descendants of both Daniel and Charles Carroll was inspirational. Not many families can trace a direct line back hundreds of years. Fewer still can claim their ancestors helped shape a new nation. Check out the story and test your American Catholic heritage history.
Playboy founder Hugh Hefner passed away last week. There's been a ton of debate about his impact on women: did he treat them as sex objects or did he liberate them from strict sexual values? And people have also been talking about his contribution to civil rights. We decided to take a different approach on this episode, and instead to delve into his vision for men.
