Thomas is joined by cultural anthropologist, social entrepreneur, and author, Joana Breidenbach. They discuss the ecosystem of disinformation that is fragmenting society and the systemic factors that contribute to it. Joana explains the role that technology plays in how we obtain and interpret information, exploring the motives of those who spread disinformation, and the historical trends that have made it increasingly difficult for people to understand unfamiliar perspectives. She and Thomas also examine how individual and collective trauma can make us more susceptible to disinformation, and how greater self-reflection, embodiment, and humility can make us more resilient to it. ✨ Registration is open for Thomas' all-new, live online course: The Spiritual Healing Journey Learn more and sign up here:

U.S. President Thomas Jefferson famously wrote that the First Amendment to the Constitution was intended to erect “a wall of separation between church and state.”It's commonly asserted that the intellectual architecture underpinning Church-State separation and the First Amendment's codification of religious freedom rested on a foundation of Protestant liberalism, coloured by the rationalist philosophy of the Enlightenment period. But what if there's more to the story? If we hold the magnifying glass a little closer, is it possible to examine the arc of religious freedom in colonial America and discover Catholic fingerprints? In this episode, we aim to give a fair hearing to this idea. Our guest is Dr. Michael Breidenbach, Associate Professor and Chair of History at Ave Maria University, and Senior Affiliate for Legal Humanities at the Program for Research on Religion and Urban Civil Society at the University of Pennsylvania. Alex und Jo grätschen die FiFA um. Logisch.
In this episode, I interview Dr. Michael Breidenbach of Ave Maria University about his recently published book, Our Dear Bought Liberty: Catholics and Religious Toleration in Early America.
Angela Breidenbach, who is the Director of the National Institute for Genealogical Studies and President of the Christian Authors Network, in a conversation at the 2022 National Religious Broadcasters Convention in Nashville, discussed the sixth book in the Queen of the Rockies series, entitled, Flame of the Rockies. She also presented a Biblical perspective on knowing genealogy and "cancel culture." You can find her online at angelabreidenbach.com.

Here is a fun quiz question. What distinction does Charles Carroll (1737–1832) hold in American History? Answer: he was the longest-surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence and the only Catholic to have signed it. And therein lies a tale of religious prejudice against Catholics and the ingenious and determined efforts over decades of leaders like Carroll and the founding family of Maryland, the Calverts, to prove their devotion to their country while not compromising on the tenets of their faith. In his fascinating 2021 book, Our Dear-Bought Liberty: Catholics and Religious Toleration in Early America (Harvard UP, 2021), Michael D. Breidenbach traces in detail the delicate balance Catholics in the period of roughly 1600-1832 had to maintain in order to secure basic civil and property rights in both Britain and the New World colonies while avoiding excommunication by the pope for swearing oaths to British rulers that often entailed denying certain rights the pope claimed. We read in the book about the crucial importance of the exact wording of a series of oaths crafted and argued about over centuries and the implications of even a slight change to each for the often persecuted Catholic minority on both sides of the Atlantic. A major contribution of this book is its discussion of the conciliar movement (or conciliarism) and its intellectual and political impact on American politicians of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Ranging back to medieval figures and then to John Locke and forward into the early years of the United States as a nation proper, Breidenbach illustrates the difference between religious toleration versus religious liberty and helps us see why the matter of bishops and even church architecture were matters of such contention in the founding era. This is a book not just for Catholics, but for all of us who care about and live under the protection of the First Amendment—and, as Breidenbach makes clear, under this part of Article 6 of the Constitution, “no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” As we saw during the hearings for Amy Coney Barrett's initial judicial appointment, this issue and anti-Catholic sentiment live with us still. Our Dear-Bought Liberty: Catholics and Religious Toleration in Early America makes intellectual, legal, religious and political history come alive. It is global history too, given its coverage of all these matters in locales such as Jamaica and Barbados. We see powerful and influential Catholics like the Carrolls (including John Carroll 1735 –1815, the first Roman Catholic bishop and archbishop in the United States) taking both brave public stands and maneuvering tirelessly and shrewdly behind the scenes with non-Catholic allies like James Madison and Benjamin Franklin on behalf of religious liberty. This is a work abounding in insights about heretofore little recognized but crucial players and modes of thinking that made us the freedom-focused country we became. Give a listen. Hope J. This week on DMT Reviews, Sam and Jack dust off another classic of "The Movies That Made DMT" with PREDATOR the 1987 action suspense classic in which space Jason Voorhees hunts down Bodybuilders in the jungle rather than teens at a lake - Don't Miss This Review!
Author of the amazing Queen of the Rockies series, Angela Breidenbach brings her expertise as a genealogist to the research of her Rocky Mountain historical series about actual amazing women and events that shaped both the state's history and... spoiler here... even the climate and flora of the area! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. This Author Just Became a New Favorite in One Short-ish Interview! Look, I have a blast meeting new authors and learning all about their books. Not only that, I'm predisposed to love a book when I begin it. I'm always disappointed when that expectation isn't met, and I can usually guess when it won't be. Now and then, though, I'm totally wrong on that score. I also have occasional blips in being certain I'll love a book and later discover I didn't. However, that's one of the best things about this podcast. I get to chat with these authors and learn what excites them, what they choose to add to their stories. What they don't. The result is a TBR pile that doubles every year, despite the hundreds of books I DO read. EEP! Chatting with Angela Breidenbach was one of those times when I almost went and bought the entire series, in paperback, while we talked--because I knew I'd love them. I changed my mind, however, and decided I should read the first book and see if Mom will like it before I do that. See, if she won't, I can buy the Kindle versions and take them on my next trip. Since Angela says they're short books, I have no doubt I can read them all en route and home again from... wherever I'm going next. I don't actually know! I think research is the big draw for me. Angela Breidenbach, being a genealogist, knows how to dig and do research. As she told the stories she'd found and what they meant to creating these novels, I knew we'd found a goldmine. Enjoy synchronized swimming? Got it. Love books about the Chicago World's Fair? Yep... got that, too. What about a harpist? A world-changing fire? Railroad rivals? Needle showers? Not only does she have them all, she knows how to tell a story to make you eager to see what she's done with them. I can't wait to hear what folks think of her books! Flame of the Rockies by Angela Breidenbach Can she release her prejudice to love again? August 1910, Idaho-Montana Border The fiery pain at her new husband's murder might equal the disaster blazing across the Pacific Northwest. Stranded in the treacherous railroad camp, baking bread for survival, Juliana Hayes has no desire to marry a railroad ruffian like Lukas Filips, or anyone else. Can she release her prejudice to love again? Or will either one of them survive The Big Blowup to find out? Based on true history when three million acres burned out of control on the border of Montana and Idaho darkening the skies all the way to the East Coast. It's a wonder anyone survived! Oh, and I almost forgot to mention she's written a book with Valerie Comer (as well as several other books and as part of collections)! This week it's a special episode of the show – professor, historian, and author Dr. Michael Breidenbach joins the show to talk about his new book, Our Dear-Bought Liberty: Catholics and Religious Toleration in Early America (https://amzn.to/3e0RDAM) Especially for those in America, the story Dr. Breidenbach tells in his book and on the podcast – how English-turned-American Catholics wrestled between fealty to the king and fealty to the pope, how religious liberty as we know it is directly traced to an appeal from the brother of America's first Catholic bishop, and many other lesser-known historical threads – is truly something you won't want to miss.
