Listen to this episode commercial free at https://angryplanetpod.comThe futures of the past have curdled into the nightmares of the present. The richest and most powerful people the world has ever known want to colonize mars, live forever, and digitize human consciousness. To make these technological miracles come to pass, they say, will require people to dramatically change the way they live and work. Will it be worth it? Does science even say it's possible? On this Angry Planet, astrophysicist and author Adam Becker joins us to explain all the problems with Silicon Valley's dreams of the future. It's not a short list. Much of the tech, and even the physics, don't work the way techno-utopians say it does. Some of the people hawking robot slaves and immortality are chasing the impossible for tragic personal reasons. Others are just trying to sell you something. We're back with our favorite type of gimmick episode: Bad Book Club! Or in this case, Bad Fanfic Club. It's a two-parter where this first episode contains our general thoughts and context on the purpose of the text, who wrote it, and why it's essentially a manifesto wearing a lightning scar and circular glasses. Part two, coming next week, will get into the nitty gritty of what makes it so particularly terrible. If you want additional background, go listen to our recent episode with Adam Becker, where we first hatch the AWFUL idea to read this, and also more information on the author. If you really, really hate yourself and don't value your own time, this fanfiction is available to read for free online. No, I'm not going to link you to it, because I'm not a sadist. Welcome to the week people. Republican leaders are still trying to jam major cuts to Medicare, food stamps and other vital programs down our throats in the form of the Big Beautiful Bill, some GOP members have had to face tough questions from their constituents about how those cuts will effect them. But after being called out last week for making cuts that will ultimately kill many of her constituents, Republican Senator Joni Earnst says that we'll all die one day. Now she's released a cynical non-apology in response to the controversy. After that, Science journalist and astrophysicist Adam Becker is here to discuss his new book More Everything Forever. Check it out here: https://mitpressbookstore.mit.edu/book/9781541619593 As well as Adam's piece in the Guardian on the same subject: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/may/03/tech-oligarchs-musk In the Fun Half, Elon Musk sits down for an interview with CBS News but only wants to talk about rocket ships and seems upset that he's being asked about the Trump administration. Hakeem Jeffries gives the most limp nothing of an answer when asked what he's planning to do in response to federal agents entering the offices of Congressman Jerry Nadler and cuffing one of his aids, which came weeks after federal agents arrested Democratic Congresswoman LaMonica McIver. And people in San Diego spontaneously protest ICE agents as they raid local establishments. Episode 305 As artificial intelligence grows into more and more aspects of our lives, it seems we're just at the beginning of the boom. Hundreds of billions of dollars are being pumped into advancing AI capabilities, making it the best funded area in science. But, just like the dot-com revolution, is it a bubble waiting to burst? In this special episode of the podcast, we explore the growing promise of AI - and also the existential threat it poses. Despite the amount of money going into AI, chatbots are still making glaring mistakes, plagued with hallucinations. All the while students are relying on them to do their homework for them, and others are using them to replace very human tasks, like writing wedding speeches. So we hear from two authors who have been thinking hard about AI and machine learning - and what that means for the future. We also get into the idea of AGI, artificial general intelligence - and its cousin, artificial superintelligence, which may already exist in certain areas. With many researchers concerned about AI overthrowing humanity, is it even worth worrying about? We dig into whether AGI is even possible and who would want to develop it. This discussion has to include some mention of the human and environmental costs of these technologies, too. Energy demands are expected to skyrocket over the next few years - can the planet keep up with the demand? And alongside that, there's a lot of human exploitation going on to help fuel these machines - a little-known fact that has to be tackled. Finally, is superintelligent AI a threat to the existence of humankind - will they want to wipe us out when they get smart enough? Or is the threat more insidious, one where we watch the slow erosion of truth and democracy? Chapters: (02:49) How chatbots and LLMs came to dominate (15:50) Superintelligent AI (18:18) What does $500 billion buy? Astrophysicist and science journalist Adam Becker has his eye on the dreams of Silicon Valley's billionaire elite—and he's unimpressed. He says Silicon Valley's “heartless, baseless, and foolish obsessions”—with escaping death, building AI tyrants, and creating limitless growth—pervert public discourse and distract us from real social problems. He argues that tech billionaires have decided that they should determine our futures for us, and that the only good future for humanity is one powered by technology: trillions of humans living in space, functionally immortal, served by superintelligent AIs. In More Everything Forever, Becker investigates what he calls wildly implausible and often profoundly immoral visions of tomorrow—and shows why, in reality, there is no good evidence that they will, or should, come to pass. Nevertheless, these obsessions fuel fears that overwhelm reason—for example, that a rogue AI will exterminate humanity—at the expense of essential work on solving crucial problems like climate change. What's more, these futuristic visions cloak a hunger for power under dreams of space colonies and digital immortality. The giants of Silicon Valley claim that their ideas are based on science, but Becker says the reality is darker: they come from a jumbled mix of shallow futurism and racist pseudoscience. Adam Becker says that powerful and sinister ideas are alive in Silicon Valley. Now he comes to the heart of the global tech world to challenge us to see how these visions of the future are foolish and dangerous. This program contains EXPLICIT language. Adam Becker's new critique of Silicon Valley More Everything Forever should probably be entitled Less Nothing Never. The science journalist accuses Silicon Valley overlords like Elon Musk and Sam Altman of promoting exaggerated dangers and promises about AI. Becker argues that these apocalyptic fears of superintelligent AI are science fictional fantasies rather than scientifically reasoned arguments. Becker acknowledges large language models have some value but believes their capabilities are overhyped. He criticizes tech billionaires for pursuing AI dominance rather than addressing real problems like climate change, and believes they are also peddling deeply troubling ideologies like eugenics. Silicon Valley is promising us more of everything forever, Becker warns, but the end result will actually be more human misery and degradation. 5 Key Takeaways* Becker believes claims about existential risks from superintelligent AI are unfounded and based on flawed arguments, including misconceptions about intelligence as a monolithic, measurable trait.* He identifies concerning connections between Silicon Valley AI rhetoric and eugenicist ideas, particularly in discussions about intelligence and population concerns from figures like Elon Musk and Marc Andreessen.* While acknowledging current AI systems have some value, Becker argues they're "solutions in search of a problem" with an ecological footprint that may outweigh their benefits.* Becker criticizes tech leaders for pursuing AI dominance instead of directing their resources toward solving urgent problems like climate change.* Rather than worrying about future superintelligence, Becker suggests we focus on how existing AI systems are being used, their resource consumption, and their potential for misuse.Adam Becker is a science journalist with a PhD in astrophysics. In the video, he make some important points about taking a DevOps-based approach to provisioning services; namely that all infrastructure should be provisioned with code that's written specifically to do the provisioning as opposed to manually going into the AWS console and fiddling with the various forms and parameters. Becker even shares the code so that anyone else can provision an API endpoint with code in exactly the same way he does it. In What is real?, Adam Becker details the century-long fight over the interpretation of quantum physics -- what this enormously successful theory, which has given us so much of the technology we use today, is actually saying about the world. Becker first encountered this controversy when, as an undergraduate student of physics at Cornell, a professor pooh-poohed his concerns over the implications of the standard model of quantum theory, developed by Bohr and others in the early 20th century, writing them off as philosophical questions, irrelevant to the study of science. But as Becker soon discovered, those questions were at the heart of a scientific debate that had been raging for nearly a century. In our conversation, we talk about the social and political factors that have governed the understanding and application of quantum physics since its inception, as well as the people on both sides of the debate. Becker also talks about borrowing techniques from fiction writing to turn a true story about a complex and opaque area of scientific inquiry into an engaging narrative populated by distinctive characters. Special Guest: Adam Becker.

There are many mysteries surrounding quantum mechanics. To me, the biggest mysteries are why physicists haven’t yet agreed on a complete understanding of the theory, and even more why they mostly seem content not to try. This puzzling attitude has historical roots that go back to the Bohr-Einstein debates. Adam Becker, in his book What Is Real?, looks at this history, and discusses how physicists have shied away from the foundations of quantum mechanics in the subsequent years. We discuss why this has been the case, and talk about some of the stubborn iconoclasts who insisted on thinking about it anyway.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Adam Becker received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan. The history of quantum physics is absolutely fascinating. In the early 20th century, brilliant minds did incredible work to bring about the greatest paradigm shift in the history of science, but they didn't always see eye to eye. Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr were colossal figures in this movement, and they had a number of amicable disagreements about quantum mechanics and what it said about reality. What were these debates all about and who was right? Our guest, Dr. Adam Becker, just published a book about precisely this subject, so let's hear what he has to say. And pick up a copy of "What is Real? The Unfinished Quest for the Meaning of Quantum Physics" wherever books are sold!
