Do we need to be qualified? Is the interior design industry likely to move towards mandatory qualifications? This topic is a hot one, and quite controversial amongst a lot of designers and creatives in the industry these days. So much so, that it almost made me nervous to record this episode! But it's a topic worth discussing, because let's face it: the argument of qualified vs unqualified can deepen the imposter syndrome that's rampant in our industry, particularly in Australia, making a lot of creatives scared to move forward in business. There's also the fact that professional bodies like the Design Institute of Australia are now advocating for industry standards, which could potentially include formal qualifications. They're looking to ensure a high level of professionalism and competency within the industry. So, will qualifications become a mandatory part of our future? Let's explore the pros and cons and try to understand what this means for everyone in our field - qualified or not.Resources & Links:Want 20% off your LEGAL docs from Foundd Legal? - Use our link hereWe use and recommend FLODESK for our emails - get 50% off with this link!Join The $10K Designer/ Mentorship here: https://interiorsinsider.com.au/mentorshipJoin the FREE Facebook group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1351851525693713Download the FREE pricing and services guide here: https://goldchalk.mykajabi.com/offers/kc8TCz72

This week I welcome Jessica Phelps, the founder of Trād Furnishings, to the podcast to talk about sustainability, creativity, and responsible resourcing. Through Trād Furnishings, Jessica offers a great, sustainable solution to a problem most designers have at some point: leftover, unused materials from a job. Sometimes we order too much of something or it doesn't work as we expected it to, but we aren't able to return it. These items often sit for years, unused, or are discarded. So Jessica created Trād Furnishings to give these items a new life in another designer's project.Jessica shares the process of how she brought this business to life, why it can be a huge help to designers in San Diego, and her hopes for expansion in the future.Join Jessica and me for a Sustainability Design Coven Training on Thursday, September 14. The event is available to Design Coven Pro members. To become a member, visit designcoven.com/join.About JessicaJessica Phelps is a graduate of Design Institute of San Diego and has worked as an interior designer for over 20 years. Originally from Missouri, she grew up around her grandmother's bridal shop and has always had an appreciation for beautiful fabrics and design. Early on, she obtained a degree in fashion merchandising and then, once she moved to San Diego, persued her career in interior design. After graduating, she passed her NCIDQ certification in 2005 and has been featured in San Diego Home and Garden magazine as well as mentioned on HGTV's website for a "Bright, Bold and Colorful Kitchen."Jessica strongly believes in working with a client and their style while guiding them to a beautifully balanced interior. She enjoys thinking "outside of the box" while respecting the fundamentals of good design and especially has a passion for designing tile layouts because of the infinite possibilities. In 2020, Jessica finally decided to take action on her idea of an online marketplace for interior designers to buy and sell items that didn't work for a job. Finally in mid-2023, Trādfurnishings.com was launched. Jessica is currently excited to see how Trād Furnishings will flourish and help the design community while, at the same time, continuing to grow and enjoy her interior design career.Featured in this episodeFeatured Tarot deck: Rider-Waite Colman Smith TarotConnect with JessicaWebsiteInstagramAre you an interior designer or are you interested in Holistic Interior Design? I LOVE a plan. Sitting down and formulating the pathway to achieve mine or my client's dreams is the stuff I live for. And I LOVE working with women who love planning as much as I do. One of those women is the episode's guest, Melissa Marsden. Mel is the Founder of workplace strategy and interior design studio, COMUNiTI. She has spent over 20 years guiding organisations to leverage their physical environments to elevate employee experience, empower high performing teams and unleash productivity. Her design and business brilliance have been recognised by the Australian Institute of Management, Design Institute of Australia and Telstra Business Women's Awards among many others. She is also the host of the Work Life by Design podcast which I have been a special guest interviewing her about her recently published book, The Next Workplace. She sounds like a rock star right? She is! But even rock stars get thrown curve balls and that is what Mel is sharing with us in this episode. Because about 18 months ago - behind the very polished, gorgeous looking business and woman, life was most definitely not going according to her well-thought out plan. Business was exploding, her team was imploding, there was a surprise pregnancy, looming book and client work deadlines coming in one after the other. I have been privileged to have worked with Mel before, during and after this period and I have marvelled at her grace and resilience through all of these plot twists. In our chat, Mel shares her experience of what it's really like to build a business, write a book AND have a baby all at the same time. I am so thankful that Mel agreed to have this conversation because I know that right now, a lot of people's businesses and lives may not be going according to plan. If this is the case for you, please know that you are not alone. I hope that this conversation provides you with some much needed comfort and perspective. This episode, we're doing things a bit differently. Live in-studio, Max and Magdalena are joined by sustainable fashion pioneer and 202030 Summit co-organizer Prof. Friederike von Wedel-Parlow. Friederike has, for the past decade, been trailblazing the discourse around fashion for positive impact, regenerative transformation, and holistic design values. In this inspiring conversation, she traces her journey through storied chapters in the industry and in academia. By challenging norms and naysayers along the way, she has permanently left a mark on how we define sustainability. As Laurel Thatcher Ulrich once said, “Well-behaved women seldom make history.” It's safe to say that with her long career of standing up for what is right, Friederike is definitely making history. In addition to learning Friederike's story, we hope you enjoy this peek into the inner workings of 202030 – The Berlin Fashion Summit, as the three reminisce on its founding, and look back at how far we've come. 202030 – The Berlin Fashion Summit is organized by studio MM04, in cooperation with the Beneficial Design Institute. It is funded by the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises Berlin and is part of the Berlin Fashion Week.

Today's guest is Brenda Markstein, a highly regarded woman in many global publications for her extensive knowledge in design along with being recognized as an Emmy Award-winning television and film producer. During the global shutdown, she made the decision to sell her home in Las Vegas, and follow the call of her heart making her way to her ranch in San Diego where she invites others to heal just as she (and the ranch itself) did. Brenda feels as though she has lived four lifetimes, having climbed Kilimanjaro, bungee jumped in Thailand, had children, attended the Design Institute in San Francisco, became a designer and costume designer on stage, and traveled to dozens of countries, speaking to spiritual leaders. Through all of it, though, she realized that having the ranch and helping others heal was an accumulation of a life of experiences. There, people feel like they've arrived home. No judgment. Whatever you brought, you leave it at the gate, and then you come into your experience. For Brenda, the pandemic presented an opportunity. Having just spent time traveling the world and meeting amazing people, she had a renewed perspective on the human condition. When she went through a split, the ranch offered itself as a place to heal. In a moment of clarity, she realized we are all in some sort of form of healing. Brenda's support system was built naturally through beliefs. The people that came to work for her all came with a passion to create, heal, and help. She hired people based on their gifts, not anyone else's weaknesses. Be comfortable with the uncomfortability. Because if you were doing that, that means you're growing out of the pattern that you've already done. It's okay to have that little bit of excitement as you take your first steps–they are the hardest. But once you take it and you establish your vision, you're in a powerful position of growth. Key Takeaways We are all in some sort of form of healing. Don't hire to your weakness, hire to the gift. Be comfortable with the uncomfortability. Because if you were doing that, that means you're growing out of the pattern that you've already done. LINKS https://rocasretreat.com/

Once regarded as a fringe movement, more designers and architects are looking to nature-based systems to build our lives while reducing carbon emissions. Claire Beale, Executive Manager at LCI Melbourne and a former Design Institute of Australia President, takes us through the Three Bs of organic design; biomorphic, biomimetic and biophilic. The National Archives of Australia records and stores key events and decisions that have shaped Australian history and after one heck of a move has opened the doors of its new facility. With enough shelving to stretch from Canberra to Cooma the purpose-built facility is environmentally controlled, environmentally friendly and energy-efficient. Jonathan Green takes a stroll through its corridors with Sean Debenham, Assistant Director Storage and Lending to check out what's in there. You sick of potatoes yet? We're not. Annie Smithers continues Kitchen Rudimental this week by tempting us to have a crack at making potato cakes (that's a potato scallop for any Queenslanders and New South Welshfolk). And Colin Bisset takes a strike at the little magic fire stick with a red tip for this week's Iconic Design. If civilization started when we learned how to create fire then what a link to our beginnings the arrival of the humble match was.
In today's episode we explore the evolution and design of Libraries with Maria Lopez Calleja, architect and Senior Associate at https://www.mvrdv.nl/ (MVRDV). As a design team leader for the firm, Maria will provide unique insight as we also highlight the https://mvrdv.com/projects/246/tianjin-binhai-library (Tianjin Binhai Library) in Tianjin, China, designed by MVRDV and Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute. Maria discusses inspirations for design, the design process, we touch on a unique criticism of the design, and dig into design concept vs. reality. If you're not familiar with the building by name, I'm confident you've seen photos of it somewhere. The Tianjin library is a somewhat futuristic, yet organic, almost hollowed out space that is wrapped by terraced bookshelves which echo the form of a sphere at the center and create an interior, topographical, landscape whose contours reach out and wrap around the building. Beyond Tianjin Library, you'll hear about the history and evolution of libraries, we explore the purpose of a library, discuss complexities, trends, opportunities for the future of library design, and much more! On the podcast this week, Debra welcomes Jane Langof to the show. In this episode, Jane shares her story. Jane talks about what Feng Shui is, the benefits and how it can be used in your home and commercial premises for success. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Feng Shui is about the relationship you have with your environment and your surroundings. It is the art of designing spaces with the right energy flow and setting up your environment for success. Jane talks about the relationship between Feng Shui wellbeing, psychology, relationships and prosperity. Determining the quality of energy in a home or building involves analysing the precise orientation of the property, the layout, when the property was built and if there have been extensive renovations. Colour and the role it plays in Feng Shui. Engaging a Feng Shui Master during the purchase of a residential or commercial property, during the concept stage of a building project or before starting a renovation. How Feng Shui can be in commercial premises to improve the energy flow for occupants, communication, wealth and property value. The number one thing you can do in your office or workspace is to bring more stillness and clarity into a space. You don't need to decorate your home with Feng Shui objects to have good Feng Shui. Feng Shui done well should be consistent with the principles of great design. Why taking a DIY approach to Feng Shui can have a negative impact. Jane Langof is a Feng Shui Master and the founder of Feng Shui Concepts combining principles of great design with traditional Feng Shui to create positive energy and success. Jane's mission is to create beautiful places that inspire you to achieve your goals. Jane specialises in Feng Shui design projects for residential and commercial projects in Sydney, Australia and internationally. We recently published a post about the customer-centric redesign CapitalOne is testing with their new cafes and what healthcare might be able to take from the project. Then we called up Lucas Artusi, Senior Systems Designer at the Design Institute for Health, to get his reaction. The Design Institute for Health team spends their time working to build a human-centered healthcare system through physical design, design thinking, technology, UI/UX, engagement patterns, and more, so Artusi is perfectly positioned to talk about a program like the CapitalOne cafes and whether it's relevant for healthcare.
Colman Walsh's head has been in UX design education for the past decade. Who better to continue our design education topic from episode 4? In 2013 he founded UXTraining.com, and ran it successfully as in-person training for individuals to corporate groups. Then came the opportunity to scale this work, and reach a global audience through online education. In 2017 Colman founded the UX Design Institute, fully online courses for certifications in UX. Interestingly, it offers accreditation through Glasgow Caladonian University. In the episode Colman describes this as a type of disruption through traditional education. Here are some of the other highlights from the chat: Importance of student feedback, then and now The decision to go for accreditation Importance of uncommon common sense for a UX career Gaps in design education Check out the UX Design Institute to learn more. Serving as the Executive Director of the Design Institute for Health, a collaboration between the Dell Medical School and the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, for episode 42 of Sourcing Matters we welcome their founder – Stacey Chang. Until 2014, Stacey served as the managing director of the health care practice at IDEO, a global design and innovation firm. Clients included governments; research institutions; hospitals; companies involved in pharma, insurance and medical technology; and all the upstarts trying to rewrite the script in established and emerging markets. Chang levers this unique experience in his current efforts to redesign the future of domestic healthcare. Transplanted into a truly unique community healthcare situation in Austin, TX – Chang is tilling new ground for US programs. Travis County, TX has employed Stacey and his talented team at the Design Institute of Health to redraft an approach of healthcare based on outcome measures of patient good health, using value-based care. They’ve put together an entirely new architecture that incentives good health, for more. Their objective is to service the needs of their constituents; all of them. These guys will prove to us all that fixing the healthcare system is attainable through palatable, bite-sized portions. Chang’s vision for food and agriculture as preventative care is a must, and a welcome bridge across industries for diverse stakeholders. Additionally, smart data analytics looking for anomalies has already saved the county millions in insightful preventative action. When their slower burn projects – like improving social determinants of health in each community, and enhancing the quality of food across the board – this potion of the Lone Star State could be a next healthcare capital. Take a trip to Austin during SXSW if you don’t believe what these folks can do. Don’t mess with Texas! We all need to care more about our care. It’s changing, fast. This 45 minute conversation provides a good overview of what is broken in the system now, why incentives are what they are, and how it can all fixed. There is hope. And, this guy, Stacey Chang – is a righteous guy in the right place making the right things happen. Thank goodness for that! Have a listen: www.SourcingMatters.show
Design is all about learning while doing. Its hallmarks are a flexible, iterative approach to complex problem-solving, as well as a set of tried-and-true techniques for identifying a problem, exploring possible solutions, and then prototyping what seems most promising. But did you know that design also involves empathy? That it involves listening and humility? In this episode Kat Jones of the Design Institute for Health at Dell Medical School, part of the University of Texas at Austin, explains how "design thinking" is transforming health care delivery, and why this has profound implications for mental health.
