MONSTER PARTY TAKES AN ESPERAN-TOUR INTO CINEMATIC OBSCURITY! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD explore the difficult history of a little-known genre film gem. Join us as we embark on... THE TWISTED JOURNEY OF INCUBUS!!! In 1966, members of the creative team behind the groundbreaking science fiction series, THE OUTER LIMITS, gave us an atmospheric horror film whose legacy is so troubled, it was considered by many to be cursed. Written and directed by OUTER LIMITS creator LESLIE STEVENS, shot by ACADEMY AWARD-WINNING cinematographer CONRAD HALL, and starring a pre-STAR TREK WILLIAM SHATNER, INCUBUS also has the distinction of being the first horror film in the language of Esperanto! For those unaware, Esperanto is an artificial language created by L.L. Zamenhof in 1887. But what would possess someone to make a horror film in this relatively unknown tongue? And would this decision jump-start the film's infamous "curse?" Get ready for a fascinating tale that must be heard to be believed. It features murder, suicide, kidnapping, adultery, unnecessary nudity, negligent film preservation, angry Esperantists, even angrier Frenchmen, and an arguably high-riding but amazing toupee. It is also an inspiring tale of the talent, ingenuity, and dedication it took to bring this remarkable work to the screen and the effort that went into the film's re-discovery and preservation. Joining us for this exciting examination of INCUBUS is a man who literally wrote the book on it. He's an award-winning author, screenwriter, and archivist who brought us the MONSTER PARTY "must have" books, THE OUTER LIMITS COMPANION and THE OUTER LIMITS AT 50. He's provided audio commentary for many TV shows and films, (including two for INCUBUS), and most recently penned the definitive history of our featured topic, INCUBUS: INSIDE LESLIE STEVENS' LOST HORROR CLASSIC! Please welcome back, our dear friend... DAVID J. SCHOW! PUBLIC VERSION. Legendary writer David J. Schow (THE CROW, LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III, CRITTERS 3 & 4, THE HILLS RUN RED, and SO MUCH more) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen for an incredibly candid conversation about his prolific career. From writing a newspaper article about people overdoing their tans leading to David writing articles for various Men's magazines… to his prolific arsenal of incredible one-of-a-kind short stories that created "Splatterpunk" and captured the attention of a young wunderkind at New Line Cinema named Mike Deluca… to being invited in to pitch story ideas for the 1989 TV series FREDDY'S NIGHTMARES where he landed a gig writing what would become the Season 1 finale (“Safe Sex”)… to what his exact involvement actually was with NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5: THE DREAM CHILD… to why violence and carnage are not enough to make up a good horror story… to one of the craziest horror convention cosplays you'll ever hear about (it even has a “happily ever after” aspect)… to his painful experience writing for the reboot of THE OUTER LIMITS (the original series is his favorite show of all time)… to the trials and tribulations of being a screenwriter and having to publicly wear any creative changes that were made to your script during the production process without your input or knowledge… to the true story of how the MPAA screwed over the release of LEATHERFACE: TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE III… to why David has the odd credit of “teleplay by” on Dave Parker's THE HILLS RUN RED (2009) and why the guys believe that the “Babyface” character could have been ranked among the great slasher icons if the film had received the multiple sequels it deserved… to David's extremely personal stories from the making of THE CROW and his honest reflections on the powerful and everlasting legacy of the universally beloved film - including the reason why he's only ever watched it twice… Schow is living proof that hard work, tenacity, and originality can indeed pay off and shine through the dark times. After all, “it can't rain all the time.” Dr Arwen provides “Hollywood Therapy” for a returning patient who's just completed her very first short film and looking for some advice as she starts submitting it to festivals, David reveals what became of the De Laurentiis mechanical “King Kong” created for the 1976 remake, and Adam shares the embarrassing story of the first time he tried smoking weed in this brutally honest, extended length, special episode that's so damn good you're going to want to listen to it twice! Live in Los Angeles? Come see Joe's Lynch's 2017 hit MAYHEM on the big screen at the Landmark Nuart Theater in West Los Angeles on September 1st! MONSTER PARTY SEDUCES THE INNOCENT! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, celebrate HALLOWEEN with a salute to those funny books that weren't always so funny. We're talking about the petrifying pulp periodicals, better known as... HORROR COMICS!!! In this episode, we provide an abbreviated history of horror comics, including the intense persecution they suffered. With E.C. books like TALES FROM THE CRYPT, THE HAUNT OF FEAR, and VAULT OF HORROR, horror comics went from being bestsellers, to the targets of moral crusaders. They were blamed for almost every societal woe imaginable. Sex! Drugs! Juvenile delinquency! Let's face it, Archie Andrews had it easy. Eventually, things lightened up for horror comics, and they slowly shed the tarnish of controversy. WARREN PUBLISHING bucked the restrictive Comics Code, with magazines like CREEPY, EERIE, and VAMPIRELLA. And with mainstream comics that included TOMB OF DRACULA, WEREWOLF BY NIGHT, SWAMP THING, and WEIRD WAR TALES, horror characters soon managed to straddle the line between monster and superhero. Although we're all still waiting for that Spider-man/Renfield team-up. Joining us for this cauldron of comic creepiness is an award-winning author, commentator, screenwriter, comic book writer, and friend of the show. The Crow | Brandon Lee | Ernie Hudson | Michael Wincott | Alex Proyas | [1994] The Crow is a 1994 American supernatural dark fantasy directed by Alex Proyas and written by David J. Schow and John Shirley. It stars Brandon Lee in his final film appearance as Eric Draven, a murdered musician who is resurrected to avenge the deaths of himself and his fiancee. The film is based on James O'Barr's comic of the same name. Michael Wincott, Michael Massee, Ernie Hudson, James O'Barr, Tony Todd, Laurence Mason, Bai Ling, Anna Thompson, Rochelle Davis and Sodia Shinas were the supporting cast for The Crow. Production on The Crow was struck by tragedy when Lee was fatally wounded during filming. As Lee had finished most of his scenes before his death, the film was completed through script rewrites, a stunt double, and digital effects. The Crow is dedicated to Brandon Lee and his fiancee, Eliza Hutton. The Crow's success led to a media franchise that includes three sequels and a television series. The sequels, which featured different protagonists and none of the original cast members, would be unable to match the success of the first film, however. The Crow was a sleeper hit at the box office, it opened at number one in the United States in 1,573 theaters with $11,774,332 and averaging $7,485 per theater. Some industry sources believed that Miramax overstated the weekend gross by as much as $1 million. The Crow ultimately grossed $50,693,129 in the United States and Canada, and $43 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $93.7 million against its budget of $23 million. It ranked at number 24 for all films released in the US in 1994, the 24th highest-grossing film worldwide for 1994, and number 10 for R-rated films released that year. Overseas in Europe, the film grossed £1,245,403 in the United Kingdom (where it was 18-rated), and sold 4,604,115 tickets in France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. If Richard Matheson is not one of the most important writers of the 20th Century he is without any doubt the most underrated. A master of the short story, the novel, television, and the silver screen. As his longtime editor, Greg Cox is known for saying “you may not know his name but you know his work.” The Thing on the wing of the plane, the button box, the Night Stalker, and I am Legend to name a few. In this panel, we discuss the career and impact of Richard Matheson. Almost two hours of personal stories, nerdy details, and career highlights this panel is great for super fans and people who want to know why they should care about this master of the craft of storytelling in all forms. I am joined by David J. Schow the screenwriter and novelist well know as having written The Crow and Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, he is a brilliant novelist his novels from The Kill Riff to the Big Crush are fantastic and his collection of horror shorts Seeing Red is a must-read classic. He has written two books on the Outer Limits and is an expert in that show, and knows more about the Creature of the Black Lagoon than anyone on the planet. As an LA writer and friend of the Matheson family, he brings a lot to this panel. Greg Cox is a novelist and editor who has written tie novels in franchises from Batman, Iron Man, The librarians, and more. He has more Star Trek Novels than most people who have pairs of underwear. He was also Richard Matheson’s editor for 20 years and managed his back catalog through the gauntlet of Hollywood tie-in editions. And we have John Scoleri was recommended to me by Mister Schow as the biggest collector of I Am Legend-related editions in the world. He is an author, collector, and publisher at Cimarron Street Books. John’s super deep details of Matheson collecting bring a lot to this panel. So enjoy this Matheson tribute and hopefully will do a part two someday… •You can find my books here: https://bookshop.org/contributors/david-agranoff Amazon-https://www.amazon.com/David-Agranoff/e/B004FGT4ZW •And me here: Goodreads-http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/2988332.David_Agranoff Twitter-https://twitter.com/DAgranoffAuthor Blog-http://davidagranoff.blogspot.com/
Very happy to have on the program author John Scoleri, who talks about his Star Wars journey and the effort to bring the first comprehensive Art of Ralph McQuarrie books to life. Released in 2007 ‘The Art of Ralph McQuarrie by John Scoleri and Stan Stice was a mammoth 12''x 15'' 400 page tome, limited to just 2000 copies, which was the culmination of an incredible amount of work, passion, belief in the cause, and a little good luck thrown in for good measure. The FORCE was certainly with them. A lot of what you can find today on shelves concerning McQuarrie's work owes a lot to the groundwork John and Stan laid with that first book. John Scoleri and Stan Stice began working with Ralph McQuarrie in 1996. In 2006 they launched Dreams and Visions Press to publish The Art of Ralph McQuarrie. John has gone on to write several more books on McQuarrie, including The Art of Ralph McQuarrie: ARCHIVES (Dreams and Visions Press, 2015). He also produced the DVDs Ralph McQuarrie: Illustrator (2002) and Caroline Munro: First Lady of Fantasy (2004). In 2019 he launched Cimarron Street Books to publish the magazine bare•bones and the collected works of award-winning author/screenwriter David J. Schow. He is currently at work on Latent Images (Dreams & Visions Press, 2021), a photographic retrospective of Night of the Living Dead (1968). John Scoleri is on Twitter @resrvordog You can still find some great Ralph McQuarrie books and prints over at their website Dreams and Vision Press http://www.dreamsandvisionspress.com John's writing on Ralph at starwars.com https://www.starwars.com/news/contributor/jscoleri Full show notes for this episode can be found at rebelbasecard.com

This week Craig welcomes the charming and erudite David J. Schow for an in-depth discussion of that venerable periodical Rod Serling’s The Twilight Zone Magazine. He’s won Oscars. He’s dated supermodels. He’s worked with Marty and Quentin and Cameron and Spielberg. But before he was a legend and an icon; before he was considered one of the top actors of his generation, Leonardo DiCaprio battled the Crites. This week the action moves out of Grover’s Bend and into the big city. Maybe we should say the action moves to one particular apartment building in the big city in the kid-friendly, horror comedy Critters 3. Jerry and Mike are joined once again by Nat Brehmer to break down all the action in this early 90s straight-to-video sequel. However, unlike some of the DTV fare we’ve covered, we argue Critters 3 has a lot going on for it, due in no small part to the writing of splatter-punk author David J. Schow (The Crow, Leatherface) and a commitment to keeping in continuity of the first two films. Like Us? Then follow us on social media. If you are talking a comic book movie with a cult following, look no further than The Crow. Directed by Alex Proyas, and written by David J. Schow and John Shirley, The Crow is based on James O'Barr's comic book of the same name. Dedicated to both Brandon Lee and his fiancée, Eliza, the film stars Lee in his final performance. Comiczone's Gareth and Adam talk all things The Crow - the 1994 movie, the soundtrack, the sequels, and of course, the comics. On the night before Halloween and the eve if their wedding, rock musician Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and his fiancée are brutally murdered. As Eric's restless soul is escorted to the netherworld, a merciful crow brings his spirit back to settle the unfinished business on earth. Eric Draven's reanimated body shall rise from its cold grave, as a supernatural avenging spectre, with permission to have his rightful retribution, exactly a year later, on Halloween Eve.
Author and rock singer, Peter Farris joins me on this episode to discuss his novel Last Call for the Living and chat about creativity, the similarities of writing and playing in a band and the other cool topics. I first saw Peter perform in a band called the Farewell Order and then later during his tenure in Cable. Below is a top ten reading list that he put together which will serve a s guideline for those who might be interested in his band of crime fiction. Check it out. 10. "The Serpent Handlers" by Fred Brown and Jeanne McDonald This study of three of the most prominent snake-handling families gave me a pivotal insight into the tradition of Signs Followers. 9. "Dirty White Boys" by Stephen Hunter One of the most audacious, entertaining convict-on-the-run novels from the king of ballistic thrillers. 8. "The Black Hand: The Bloody Rise and Redemption of "Boxer" Enriquez, a Mexican Mob Killer" by Chris Blatchford Well into revisions on Last Call for the Living, The Black Hand provided chilling background on one of the most notorious prison gangs operating today. 7. "Feast of Snakes" by Harry Crews One of my favorite novels of all time. When I finished Feast of Snakes I knew I would never be able to write fiction that good...but I had to try anyway. 6. "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor A family encounters a dangerous escaped convict while on vacation. One of the finest, most powerful short stories ever written in my humble opinion. 5. "Gun Work" by David J. Schow DJS is a genre unto himself and Gun Work is a masterwork in hardboiled gonzo gun play. One of the smartest writers working today. 4. "Provinces of Night" by William Gay A giant of southern literature who sadly passed away last year. For me Gay bridged the gap between Cormac McCarthy and Larry Brown. 3. "Father & Son" by Larry Brown A Mount Rushmore writer whose path to publication is as inspiring as the tremendous body of work he left behind. 2. "Blood Meridian" by Cormac McCarthy I re-read it every year, accompanied by "Hex: Or Printing in the Infernal Method" by Earth. 1. "On the Yard" by Malcolm Braly and "Education of a Felon: A Memoir" by Edward Bunker Braly's novel and Bunker's memoir compliment each other so well I had to put them together. Two of the most profound examinations of penitentiary life you'll find, by arguably our greatest convict writers.
