Our Great Coach on this episode is Bill Sweetenham. Bill is an Australian swimming coach, who first started training athletes in the 1970's in the rural Australian town of Mount Isa. His coaching career progressed quickly and he coached at his first Olympian in 1976. His swimmers have delivered 27 Olympic and World Championship medals and have broken 9 world records. I first interviewed Bill in early 2022, and the discussion was a complete masterclass. He talked about meeting Nelson Mandela and the Great Boxing coach, Angelo Dundee. As well as sharing insights from his long and successful career. We stayed in contact after that interview, and Bill would occasionally add me to emails that he sent to friends containing his observations on sport and life. There was one particularly special one he shared which was a book he had written for his grandchildren after visiting Africa. I recently had the opportunity to visit the part of Australia where Bill lives and I asked him if he would be open to another interview, where we could discuss some of the ideas he had shared in those emails with me. Todays podcast is that conversation recorded in June 2024. We cover mental health, team collaboration and the value of volunteering. Bill was very open and introspective as he was in the throws of finishing a book called ignorance screams whilst wisdom listens. It was agreat experience for me to spend this time with Bill and I hope you enjoy the interview as much as I did, If you would like to send us any feedback or if you know a great coach, who has a unique story to share, then we would love to hear from you, please contact us at thegreatcoachespodcast@gmail.com or contact us through our website thegreatcoachespodcast.com Hosted on Acast. He then went on to be the Head Coach of the Hong King swimming team in 1991, and the Great Britain team from 2000 to September 2007. In his tenure with the Great Britain team they won as many medals at the World Championships as they had at all previous World Championships back to 1973. In all he has coached at 5 Olympic Games, 8 Commonwealth Games, and 9 World Championships, his swimmers have delivered 27 Olympic and World Championship medals and have broken 9 world records. Bill has an amazing presence, he fills the room with his energy and passion. He is a coaching guru in the truest sense of the word and in this interview we were also joined by 4 other elite coaches, who came to listen to what he had to say. And it was an absolute masterclass. He talks about meeting Nelson Mandela and the Great Boxing coach, Angelo Dundee. He shares stories of his successes and failures and reflects on what he has learnt from each. He is also challenging, forthright and motivating; I left with a soaring sense of energy after this discussion. There were so many highlights: The story he shares about meeting Nelson Mandela and the answer he gave him to the question of what lessons he learned while imprisoned on Robben island. His view that The coach sees what the athlete can't, and the athlete feels, what the coach cant and takes a marriage of both those attributes to produce a winning result. And The importance of investing in your past so that you can see your future. This was a life affirming conversation, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

For many Italian Americans, the sport of boxing is synonymous with Italian American pride, thanks to the timeless accomplishments of legendary names like Rocky Marciano, “Boom Boom Mancini," Jake La Motta, Carmen Basilio, and the late, great Angelo Dundee. But one very dedicated Italian American has made it his life’s mission to help preserve the sport’s legacy, while training a whole new generation of talent both in and out of the ring. On this week’s episode, we’re joined by celebrity trainer Dino Spencer, owner of Miami Beach’s World Famous 5th Street Gym, to discuss his four decades in the squared circle… from his tutelage under Hall of Fame trainer, and fellow Italian American Angelo Dundee, to the more than 10,000 men and women he has trained over his illustrious career -- including world champions in boxing, MMA, UFC, and other martial arts. Dino also shares how he ended up as the “Trainer to the Stars," having gotten into the ring with such high-profile clients such as Adriana Lima, Dave Chapelle, Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, David Schwimmer, Christopher Walken, Mark Walberg, Mario Lopez, Jeremy Piven, and Michael Phelps. We'll also dive into the fabled history of the World Famous 5th Street Gym, from its start in 1950 when Chris Dundee began promoting big-time boxing in Miami Beach to how it quickly became the celebrated University of Boxing, overseen by Chris, the “Wizard of Oz," and his brother Angelo, the “Prince of Oz," and how it was a magnet for a wide range of international celebrities including Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Jackie Gleason, Malcolm X, The Beatles, Sean Connery, Frank Sinatra, Sylvester Stallone, and a myriad of others who were absorbed into the gym’s legendary mystique. With Italian American pride as such an important theme to this episode, we also talk about Dino’s own heritage and how he has worked to learn more about his roots and share them not only with his family, but also to reconnect to a whole new generation of boxing talent in Italy, and how he has set out to build these new Italian emigres into better fighters -- and better people -- through their shared Italian American heritage. Whether you’re a lifelong fan of “the Sweet Science” of Boxing, or just a lover of great Italian American stories, this episode is certainly one you will not want to miss! Ron Canada talks Star Trek TNG, DS9 and VOY Ron Canada went from Harlem to the Delta Quadrant in the span of his over four-decade-long career on stage and screen, starting in NYC in theater and not long after in Hollywood with over 200 appearances in the many facets of his performing resume. Trekkies may remember Ron best as Martin Benbeck in the Star Trek TNG episode "The Masterpiece Society," the Klingon lawyer Ch'Pok from Star Trek DS9's "Rules of Engagement," and on Voyager as the Malon freighter captain named Fesek from "Juggernaut." Ron reminisces about how he was cast in Star Trek, working with Patrick Stewart and the brilliant ways he showed off the different faces of anger through Martin, acting alongside Avery Brooks and Michael Dorn in a very memorable legal episode of DS9 that was directed by Levar Burton, sitting in the makeup chair to be a Klingon and Malon, the challenging conditions of filming his episode of Voyager, and the story of how Ron was almost cast as Martok but lost out to his former roommate J.G. Hertzler! Ron brought a lot of life to these characters, and aspiring actors will love his tips and explanations for his choices with these roles. Plus, acting with Jaleel White and Darius McCrary on "Family Matters" and how he almost played Reginald Vel Johnson's character on the show, "Adventures in Babysitting" with Anthony Rapp, his bizarre William Shatner story from "Boston Legal," acting alongside David Hasselhoff in the infamous "Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD" Marvel movie, memories of boxing legend Angelo Dundee while working on "Cinderella Man," working on "The Orville" with Seth McFarlane and Jonathan Frakes, and more! Boxing gets the full Hollywood Treatment as Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier finally agree a deal to meet in the ring. The numbers are astronomical and break new boundaries in sports promotion, as the world readies itself for 'The Fight of the Century'. Under the watchful eye of Angelo Dundee, Ali heads to Miami for his training in order to prepare for what he hopes will be the fight that makes him heavyweight champion of the world once again. Frazier is also back in the gym, but he prefers the sub-zero temperatures of the Catskill Mountains, where alongside Yank Durham and Eddie Futch, he will plot how to defeat 'The Greatest'. Away from the training, sparring and hours on the road, Ali continues his verbal assaults on Joe, but this time does he take things too far? Elsewhere, the scramble for 'The Fight Of The Century' tickets begins as everyone from astronauts to sports stars, Hollywood actors to gangsters clamour for the hottest ticket in town. With so much riding on the fight there is genuine concern amongst the authorities about any nefarious characters influencing the outcome, so unprecedented precautions are implemented to keep the identity of the referee a secret until the last minute. It's early 1971 and Nas is your guide as we prepare ourselves for 'The Fight of the Century - Ali v Frazier'. ====== Credits: Presenter - Nas Producer - Mark Sharman Writer - Ayad Andrews Drama Producer - Owen Lewis Executive Producer - Phil Critchlow Executive Producer - Nas Drama Recording - Jerry O'Riordan Sound Design - Micky Curling Original Music - Owen Parker Production Assistant - Gabby Morris and Sera Baker Drama Assistant - Maia Henderson ACTORS Trevor Dion Nicholas Aaron Pierre David Menkin Courtney Winston Tomini Babs Evlyne Oyedokun Jennifer Armour Earl R Perkins Clinton Liberty Philip Desmeules Jose Palma Finbar Lynch A TBI Media Production for BBC Sounds.

Trzeba by stworzyć jakiś nowy wyraz. I tak oto gówno zostało zamienione w złoto (nazywam to Alchemią Życia) a gniew, dzięki nakierowaniu go i dzięki zdobyciu odpowiednich umiejętności, zastąpiła duma. To ja siebie stworzyłem!
Legendary boxing trainer Angelo Dundee said the two best chins in boxing belonged to Muhammad Ali and a Connemara man, Sean Mannion. Originally from Rosmuc, Galway, Sean was never knocked down in 57 professional bouts, including a world title fight (2014)
How do you measure a famine? Following the UN's recent announcement that famine conditions have ended in Somalia, More or Less explores what the definition of a famine is – and how definite a definition it is. Tim Harford hears from Grainne Moloney, head of the UN's Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit and Professor Stephen Devereux from the Institute of Development Studies. Also in the programme: Muhammed Ali's boxing trainer, Angelo Dundee, was arguably one of sport's greatest behind-the-scenes figures. But did he really deliberately tear Ali's boxing glove to win the star crucial recovery time in his 1963 fight against Sir Henry Cooper? Tim Harford gets out his stopwatch for a simple exercise in counting. This programme was originally broadcast on the BBC World Service.
