Man, this was fun. I've been on a Drive-By Truckers kick since the holidays since I decided to do a full discography listen as a way of pregaming for seeing the band for the first time in early February. That show was pure awesomeness. This was one of our Patreon Revisitor shows with Kevin Peters picking the album. We asked Stephen Deusner, author of Where the Devil Don't Stay: Traveling the South with the Drive-By Truckers (American Music Series): Deusner, Stephen: 9781477318041: Amazon.com: Books to join us. And, no Drive-By Truckers episode could be recorded without our buddy Jason Earle of the Marinade who is a DBT superfan.I think y'all will dig this one, even if you're not super familiar with DBT. This episode first ran on August 28, 2022.For music critic Stephen Deusner, songwriters fall into one of two camps. There are the ones who have something they want to tell you, and then there are the ones who want to figure something out. For him, the longevity of the Drive-By Truckers comes from their residence in the second camp. For decades now, they've been writing smart, complex songs whose characters add complexity to our picture of rural America, especially the South. Stephen's book about the Truckers, Where the Devil Don't Stay: Traveling the South with the Drive-By Truckers, was published in the fall of 2021, and is now on its second printing. On today's episode of Inner States, we talk about the South, Southern Rock, rockets, the masculinity of Jimmy Carter, and, of course, the Truckers.Music ReviewAfter our conversation with Stephen Deusner, Adriane Pontecorvo reviews Private Space, the latest album from Durand Jones and the Indications. The band started almost by accident in Bloomington, Indiana. The second track on Private Space, “Witchoo,” ended up on Barack Obama's best-of list for 2021.MusicOur theme song is by Amy Oelsner and Justin Vollmar. We have additional music from the artists at Universal Production Music.
Colt and David sit down with songwriter Jared Mullins.Jared Mullins moved to Nashville in 2013. Mullins songwriting credits include #1 songs "Thank God" by Kane Brown and “Homemade" by Jake Owen. Mullins is also a co-writer on LOCASH's “Beach Boys” (ft. The Beach Boys), Parmalee's "Roots", Morgan Wallen's "Devil Don't Know", "F150-50" and "Keith Whitley", and also has cuts with Cole Swindell, Justin Moore, Granger Smith, Runaway June, and more.Facebook: www.facebook.com/jared.mullinsInstagram: www.instagram.com/jadedmuffinsSupport the showCheck out our socials and follow us!Facebook: www.facebook.com/TwangTownPodcastInstagram: www.instagram.com/TwangTownPodTwitter: www.twitter.com/TwangTownPodWe would love your support to continue to bring listeners amazing content!Cash App: www.cash.app/$TwangTownPodBuzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/2232176/support

Stephen Deusner's Where the Devil Don't Stay: Traveling the South with the Drive-By Truckers (U Texas Press, 2021) is the book-length study Drive-By Truckers fans have been waiting for. A group biography in the form of a road trip saga, Deusner's book takes you to the Athens scene that has supported the band, the sweltering hot Birmingham studio where they recorded their breakthrough album Southern Rock Opera, and the Muscle Shoals in which a majority of the band was raised. Deusner's trip takes wide detours into Southern history and culture, as any proper treatment of the Truckers must. It is as much about what the band's music is about (family, tradition, violence, despair, transcendence) as it is about the music itself. This book is as complex, moving, thrilling, and funny as one of DBT's marathon sets. Pass the bourbon. Andy Boyd is a playwright based in Brooklyn, New York. Stephen Deusner is the author of the wonderful biography about The Drive-by Truckers called Where the Devil Don't Stay. The Truckers may be my favorite band of all time and this book captures the essence of their appeal and importance. Stephen's work regularly appears in Uncut, No Depression, Pitchfork, the Bluegrass Situation, Bandcamp Daily, American Songwriter, and many other publications. The music you are hearing is I Wanna Hold You from Jay Gonzalez's record Back to the Hive. In addition to his work on keys and guitars in Drive-by Truckers, Jay makes beautiful solo music.
Have you ever wondered -How do I even fight the Devil-- Don't worry you are not alone. In this episode Pastor Sperbeck will begin to break down what God has provided for us in His armory.

Let me start this podcast episode write-up with a correction. Evangeline Lilly actually posted about her support for the Canadian trucker convoy on her Instagram, not Twitter as I stated in the audio for this podcast. As it turns out, Ms. Lilly's Twitter account has laid dormant since the summer of 2021. So go figure. But the big story is not a popular Hollywood actress getting on board with protests against vaccine mandates and lockdowns. Though that is welcome, the bigger story is that perhaps tens of thousands of truck drivers are already in or else on their way to Canada's capital city to shut the city down as a kind of park-in protest against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's devastation of the country and its economy in the name of fighting the spread of COVID. As the son of a semi-retired truck driver - pun intended - I've long held that truck drivers are a sort of unsung hero class, bringing goods to market which we depend on for every day life. I wish our big rig captains of the road up north well in their effort to liberate the land of maple syrup and hockey from tyranny. Hopefully their loyalists don't come south to find refuge in the U.S. Imagine what the domino effect might be if they succeed in pressuring Trudeau to step down. Our mainstream media in the U.S. apparently is. Otherwise, why would I be hearing they're refusing to cover this? Meanwhile, they will cover in spades, and amplify, calls on Spotify to censor or deplatform Joe Rogan's podcast for covering, among other things, the Canadian truck driver protest. Go figure. Perhaps we should have the audacity of hope that it's just time for the English speaking world - in Canada, the U.S., and maybe even Australia - to throw off the shackles of our globalist overlords and their petty tyranny who say like so many digital Mary Antoinette wannabes, "Let them eat VR cake" even as they collapse our economies and force our children to wear masks and endure story-time outside in the cold of winter, or throw husbands and fathers out of work if they refuse experimental COVID vaccines and an endless number of follow-up booster shots because the first one clearly didn't work. I too wish the Canadian trucker convoy well, and hope they succeed. But even if they don't, perhaps these power-mad safety czars are cruising for a bruising, at least in America. The announced retirement of Justice Stephen Breyer so President Biden can appoint his successor before the mid-term elections in November more than implies that Democrats expect to lose at least the United States Senate to Republicans, but perhaps the House of Representatives as well. At last count, 42 current representatives have announced they will not seek re-election this November. And of those, 29 are Democrats and 13 are Republicans. Though our ultimate hope as Christians is not with princes or politicians, it is still proper to hope and pray for the leadership of our country so we can live peaceful, quiet lives under authority which rewards those who do good and punishes those who do evil instead of the other way around. In closing, give a listen to a little diddy my cousin Brent sent me recently by 'Drive-By Truckers' called 'Where the Devil Don't Stay.' And imagine with me the Democrats --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support
Host J.D. Reager talks to music writer and author Stephen Deusner about his upbringing in Selmer, TN, moving on to Memphis and beyond, becoming a contributor to Pitchfork, Uncut, etc., writing his new book Where the Devil Don't Stay: Traveling the South With the Drive-By Truckers, their shared love of Centro-matic, and more.
The Alabama rock band Drive-By Truckers have long been one of the hardest working and most thoughtful outfits working today. Now, they have a worthy biographer. Music writer Stephen Deusner is a native of McNairy County, Tennessee, a place immortalized on the Truckers' 2004 album The Dirty South. Stephen first encountered the Truckers through the band's 2003 album Decoration Day. Since then, he has been hooked. Where the Devil Don't Stay (which takes its name from a Mike Cooley song about a backwoods Alabama bootlegger), is his first book. DBT will be pleased. Where the Devil Don't Stay tracks the Truckers from their beginnings in north Alabama to their disastrous Memphis move, eventual breakthrough in Athens, Georgia, and making their mark via the two-disc, Skynyrd-inspired opus Southern Rock Opera. Since then, the music has kept coming, most recently on the band's 2020 offering, The New OK. So, fellow Lot Lizards, drop your Buford stick and grab your Betamax guillotine, it's time to talk some Truckers! Music used in this episode: "Where the Devil Don't Stay," "Zip City," "Santa Fe," and "Goddamn Lonely Love."
Stephen Deusner, author of Where the Devil Don't Stay: Traveling the South with the Drive-By Truckers, drops by the show to talk about — who else? — the Drive-By Truckers and their acclaimed 2003 album, Decoration Day. In addition to breaking down each of the album's 15 tracks, Stephen reflects on how he became a music journalist, how being a music journalist shapes his music-listening habits and when he first had the idea to write a book about DBT.You can keep up with Stephen on Twitter at @stephenmdeusner and on Instagram at @stephendeusner, as well as on his website, https://www.stephendeusner.com/.Al is on Twitter at @almelchiorBB, and this show has accounts on Twitter and Instagram at @youmealbum. In his new book, “Where the Devil Don't Stay: Traveling the South with the Drive-By Truckers,” Stephen Deusner tells the story of the acclaimed band from either Muscle Shoals or Athens, depending on who you ask. The Truckers have, at various points, included some of the greatest songwriters in American music: Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley, Jason Isbell and Shonna Tucker. But he also tells a story about the making of Southern culture, exploring the history and mythology of places like Birmingham, Richmond and McNairy County, Tennessee. This is an episode for anyone who loves great music – or even anyone who just loves great Southern stories. You can find Deusner's book through the University of Texas Press. Today we have an interview but first we check out the message Little Pink Houses by John Mellencamp. What in the world is he on about? Does it have anything to do with liberty? . Nicky’s come up with the album Happy To Be Here, by New York band Barrie Nicky said it reminded him of “a downtempo Foster the People or a female fronted Starfucker” His comments: Erma loved this record apparently, every time I turned around she was dancing and wiggling to it. The album has an ethereal vibe yet still manages to drive solid and steady. Easily the catchiest thing I’ve listened to in ages. Sonically it’s magnificent. It holds a vibe and punctuates it with little bits of interest here and there. No instrument takes center stage but the melodies are so infectious you never lose track of them. http://barrie.bandcamp.com/album/happy-to-be-here I’ve picked a Jazz record by Maarten Hogenhuis of the Netherlands. Rise & Fall is a relaxing but interesting sonic journey, exactly what I was looking for this week. The combination of Sax bass and drums gives these tunes all the deep grooves you could ask. Not exactly dancible this record would be a great background for for an evening in. https://maartenhogenhuis.bandcamp.com/album/rise-fall We chat today with Kelly Conley and Cole Humphrey of Owen Glass. This Episode of Jugheads starts out with a little Bojack Horseman and Degrassi Next talk! Hang on until we get into Riverdale though, because this chapter is a humdinger! Jordan forgets who Large Marge is, and we do our Buffalo Bill impressions! The show is pretty good too! Nothing is going to stop Alice Cooper from donning her old leathers and chaperoning Betty to F.P.’s retirement party, but Betty has steamy plans of her own. Troubles in paradise plague all relationships, and we find out that the creepy janitor is in fact a creep! Make sure you stick around for our Farchies and Betty or Veronica (we might just have a new cool fact for you too!) All this and more in Chapter 21 of Jugheads: Jugs of the Devil —————————————————————————————————————————————— Don’t forget to subscribe to the podcast so you can hear us every week…Give us a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 star rating while you’re at it! Pop Art Painter Jamie Roxx (www.JamieRoxx.us) welcomes McMains, (Americana, Country, Pop, singer-songwriter) to the Show! www.mickmcmains.com Singer-Songwriter McMains’ fun, everyone has been there, Don’t Say Good Night Tonight reached the #1 spot (most downloaded cut) on the Airplay Express Top 40 chart this past December leading to the anticipation of his first solo CD since Guitar Love in 2012, called American Soul, on Welland International, being released this May. A descendent of Devil Anse Hatfield (of the legendary American folklore clan the Hatfields) McMains documents his legacy in Devil Don’t Care, early on in the 13 track American Soul album; but spends most of his craft in a dazzling collection of beautiful songs of self-awareness, love, humor and vision. McMains can be heard with his recording of “I Walk Alone” in The Switch, starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman; and with “Sexy, Sexy” in the film Hard Breakers. Media Inquiries: Doug W. 00:00:00 - The Paleopals are back in the hot seat for their first show of 2011 all about the Queen of Sciences: MATH! Strap in, we promise it's not boring. 00:06:14 – Patrick likes pulling science out of the weirdest places, this week it's a New York Times piece by Michael Lewis about math, markets and natural disasters. This one really may be worth reading before listening. 00:29:12 – Anthony Hopkins is up to his old tricks again as he squares off against both skepticism and demonic possession in the "inspired by true events" trailer for The Rite! 00:43:46 – Odd-Man Out makes it's first appearence in a goodly while. Ryan is sitting silent (... sort of) as Patrick and Charlie talk about the BBC podcast A Brief History of Mathematics 00:57:00 – PaleoPOW returns with a vengeance this year. Patrick proclaims profit provided by PANG! Charlie gets corrected by Eric on his use of the term "hacktivist". Eric also set up a subreddit for those who know what that means. And finally Ryan (Who got bored and started a tumblr blog) has a double addition to the Brachiolope Gallery in the form of cookies from Augustin and ornaments from Babbletrish, holiday style! Be sure to check them out right freaking now. Thanks for listening! Stop by the Paleocave blog during the week for even more science jibba-jabba. Music from this week's show: Stranger - Dr. Dog Rock you like a Hurricane - Scorpions Where the Devil Don't Stay - Drive by Truckers Math Sucks - Jimmy Buffet
