Jerry Dugan joins talk about the power leaders have to shape an organization's climate into an empowering place of growth. He explains the T.E.N.T concept, which is rooted in building and sustaining a culture based on trust, empathy, nurture, and the thrill of thriving together. Leaders can be like tent-poles. Jerry shares that proper tent set up in the military requires staking the corners first to provide structure. They are supporting the structure while letting the team, which are like the canvas, remain adaptable and strong. By doing so, leaders set the stage for a great exchange of ideas, collaboration, and shared objectives that solidify the organization's mission and vision. The T.E.N.T framework operates similarly for teams - stake the 4 leadership practices first to create psychological safety for the team to thrive. A leader who applies this framework is a facilitator, helping each team member explore their potential within a supportive environment. Try shifting from reactive management methods to proactive leadership strategies. This move encourages self-reliance and independence among team members. As Jerry explains, the T.E.N.T Framework is how you can ensure your employees are leading satisfying and fulfilled lives at the workplace. Sometimes a role as a leader can feel like wrangling cats. However, getting everyone pulling in the same direction is good for productivity and is the key to your organizational culture. Early on in Jerry's life he was your standard Army brat (which I learned stands for born raised and trained). But everything changed when he was 11 and his younger brother was 9. Following the divorce of his parents Jerry and his brother had to become "career suicide preventionalists" - meaning they worked hard to keep their suicidal father alive. It worked for a while until Jerry found his dad hanging himself. Unable to free his dad he cried out "Please God No!" Miraculously his dad lived but the next chapter of life Jerry and his brother were in foster care in Germany. Fortunately the family they were placed with were a loving healthy family. This is where Jerry learns how to break the cycle. After being reunited with his dad his new skills are put to the test as they move back to the states and are surrounded by unhealthy, poor, and bullying family members. Jerry's story is full of much overcoming which is demonstrated in the life he now lives - a healthy family, teaching and serving others. Are You in a Rut in Your Life and Work? Are you going through the motions of life? Have you been checking all the boxes you were told to achieve? Do find it seems so meaningless? Does it seem that what you thought looked like financial freedom and bliss has become a job jail, bound by golden handcuffs? How's your family life? Or do you even have one? How about your fitness? Finances? How's your future? Is it a blur? And have you lost faith? If any of this sounds like you, please know you are not alone. Millions of people are living a life of struggle. The pressure mounts, with no end in sight. You need a change. But how do we get there. It's time to get beyond the rut. And in this episode of A New Direction author, entrepreneur, coach and show host Jerry Dugan walks us through his latest book "Beyond the Rut". Join us right here for some very important life change. Jerry Dugan's book "Beyond the Rut: Create a Life Worth Living in Your Faith, Family, and Career" is a quick read, but is a straight forward look at what many of us experience..."the rut". Beyond the Rut dives into what is the rut, and the lies that we tell ourselves that keep us in the rut of life.  It exposes the truth about what the rut really is and that the rut is not as deep as we believe. Beyond the Rut also takes a look at how since we have been children we have been conditioned to be in the rut.  And how over time that conditioning has created a number of problems. Jerry also exposes us to the 5 F's where our rut takes a toll, Faith, Family Fitness, Finances, and our Future.  And how when we are in "the rut" we are not as healthy in any of these areas as we need to be. The book provides a number of positive examples of those who have made the decision to get out of the rut.  The mindset that it took to get there and the freedom they feel.  Jerry provides a number of ways you can move beyond the rut and move to a life of success. "You've got to work hard to be ready when the lucky break happens." Last episode, Jerry Dugan joined to share about his passion for servant leadership and the lessons he's learned in his career. As we do on The Jody Maberry show, when we have a guest, that guest comes back the very next episode to ask me three questions. These questions are not prompted by me or influenced by me. He really came up with some good ones.  Jerry's three questions are: What lessons from your park ranger days would you say still carry over today to being a servant leader? What is the rut you help people get out of?  How would that person go about getting that first gig? He even manages to sneak in a fourth question about Bigfoot. As Jerry asked each question it led to interesting discussions about how our experiences can shape us into better leaders who prioritize serving others. Not only by leading, but also genuinely caring for those we lead. Many people that transition from public service to entrepreneurship find it challenging to promote themselves. It often goes against the very core of servant leadership. Take a listen to hear my thoughts on authentic public service with the extraordinary servant leader, Jerry Dugan. “Our ruts are really not that deep. They're not that hard to climb out of.” Jerry Dugan never expected that a simple conversation about Nutella would lead him on a journey of personal growth and self-discovery. He is a compassionate speaker and author who aims to empower men in their thirties and forties to shatter the barriers keeping them from realizing their full potential. As an avid podcast listener, he found himself drawn to the stories of others and the lessons they had to share. During a New Years resolution jog on New Year's Day he realized he wanted to inspire others as well. This led to the creation of a father-son podcast that would ultimately change his life. He realized that through his podcast, Beyond the Rut, he was inadvertently inspiring himself by showing up every week to talk about something that mattered. As the years passed, Jerry noticed that he was stuck in a rut in his personal and professional life. It was time for a change. Through introspection and the support of his family, Jerry made the decision to leave his corporate job. He spent time writing a book that captured all that he had learned to help others break free from their ruts. The podcast evolved from a men's ministry to a place where people share their stories and practical advice on how to get out of ruts in their lives. He now has a renewed sense of purpose and fulfillment after recognizing the importance of seizing the moment and taking the necessary steps towards personal growth. Jerry's podcast and book, Beyond the Rut, have given him a wealth of experience in guiding others towards personal breakthroughs and growth. Give a little to help Chris continue to make Truce! In 1945, C.S. Lewis published his excellent book "The Great Divorce". It happens to be one of my favorite books. It has many themes, the biggest of which is that there can be no hell in heaven. The two are divorced from each other (hence the title). Another is that humans are easily distracted from God's work and the gospel. This season I've been telling the backstory of Christian fundamentalism. I think many of us have been distracted from the gospel because of politics or the people around us. If you were joined by a loved one who passed away or an angel who challenged you to walk to heaven, would you? What distracts you from following Jesus? From really going for it? Special thanks to my improv troupe (Nick, Josh, and Jackie) who helped with voices. Additional vocal work came from Paul Hastings from the "Compelled" podcast and Jerry Dugan from "Beyond the Rut". Give their shows a listen and let me know what you think! Sources: The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis (though I only used some concepts) Discussion Questions: What distracts you from following God? Are you tied too strongly to things? Safety? Your family? Your job? Your identity? Your politics? What books do you read over and over again? Why? How can a person's own love of intellectualism be a distraction? How can we have compassion? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
