What a week! Jean was off for a few days, but Brian & Shaw managed to hold down the fort without burning the building to the ground! We talked about having an emergency fund, and how $400 used to be the amount you needed, but now it's closer to $1,400!!! Plus, Panera is testing an A-I drive-thru in some of it's stores. What could possibly go wrong? Tia Sneath from Gundersen Health Systems stopped by to talk about next weekend's "Steppin Out in Pink", and there was a woman who was begging an airline for an "adults-only" flight after dealing with a very loud & annoying child on her flight. Needless to say, Brian agreed with her. We talked about the things couples bicker about at home, and we also talked about the division of the chores at home between men & women. The final "Summer Party Tip" of the year gave you a list of things to do around the state of Wisconsin this Labor Day weekend, and we discussed an LA bar that recently decided to ban anyone under the age of 30 from entering on Friday & Saturday nights. Plus, a man who was stung over 20,000 times by bees, and a list of things to look forward to in the month of September.  And speaking of lists, another list of things to do in & around La Crosse this weekendSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Triggerrun – Artist Bio Triggerrun Production (TRP), one of the greatest hidden treasures of the underground music scene has returned! The legacy began in 1989, when three (3) young men from Monroe High (Albany, GA), would recruit three (3) young men from a rival high school, Westover, to form a dance group to compete in local talent shows just for fun. Their first performance would be epic and awe-inspiring as TRP would spark the initial flame to secure their legacy into the underground world of hip hop to begin their dominance! To quench their new found thirst for fame, Triggerun would set its sight on their next big venture and enter into the city's most popular cash prize event of them all, Albany's "Night At The Apollo" event sponsored and promoted by Gilbert Udoto as spin-off of the World Famous "cultural phenomena, “It's Showtime At The Apollo”. The goal was simple, to win the local cash prize of five hundred dollars ($500) to pay for studio time at Katz & Jammer, in order to record and shop their demo to the industry major record labels in hopes of their big break! Hungry for stardom, in 1992, Triggerrun would split into two groups to double their earnings in the "Dance" category. And as a result, Triggerrun would win both 1st and 2nd place in the dance category. Their feat was so impressive, TRP would begin to create a cult following throughout the city. Over the next four years, they would reign atop of the dance category, winning 1st Place for three (3) out of the four (4) years before officially retiring from the amateur circuit during the 5th year. As an encore, in the summer of ‘93, Triggerrun began expanding its territory crossing Florida lines. Next stop, Tallahassee Florida. Home of the Florida A & M University (FAMU) Rattlers, The Tallahassee Urban League and 100 Black Men of America would sponsor the talent show extravaganza at one of the coolest nightclubs in the city, the Moon. Triggerrun's 1st Place finish at the Moon would help the group finally reach their pinnacle. For the next stop would be a one way ticket to perform center stage in front of a national television audience at the World Famous "Apollo Theatre" in Harlem, New York hosted by the one and only Steve Harvey! However, their much celebrated victory would soon spark another competitive stand-off with the FAMU Marching 100's beloved Strikers dance group. After securing their victory, Triggerrun would frequent another well known Tallahassee night spot of its day known as “The Barn''. The night would be EPIC! And would go down in history as the first ever, “You Got Served “dance off! The Trigger versus the Strikers!! The dance battle would go back and forward as expected. However, Triggerrun would prevail with their eclectic style of dance to claim the unofficial victory. Their victory at the Moon would also capture the eyes and ears of Miami-bass music artist, Beat Master Clay D. The “Give Me A Bottle” emcee would invite Triggerrun to perform as opening act for a three day tour headlined by Uncle Luke [Skywalker]. The invitation would be their first professional tour. Triggerrun would use this opportunity to promote their first indie single release, “Pump Ya Fist.” Triggerrun finally began to experience success, and stardom away from home, as they would be scheduled to interview with the campus television show “Snake Eyes”, (created by Kelsey L. Scott). This interview would spawn an additional opportunity as opening act for II D Extreme and Heavy D, a FAMU sponsored student concert event. However, it was TRP's amateur night television debut that would forever change the world of Hip Hop as they would perform an eclectic, aerobatic dance ensemble that would catapult them into the underground mythical urban legends and pioneers for the next generation of Hip Hop dancers. An entertainment spectacle never before seen, Triggerrun would become a precursor to spark an evolutionary dance culture and trend across the nation. H3TheArtist(Herbert Bowens, Jr.) described the performance as "a surreal and humbling experience". Fast forward to 1998, “Knegil”(Anthony K. Washington) would head north to Atlanta to finish school and raise a family. Still trying to hold the group together, TRP worked to drop their second indie release, the single, “Toss It Up” recorded at the infamous Patchwerk studios home of none other than the legends Outkast. TRP began to set focus on the new music scene growing in Atlanta and would perform at one of the local area club hot spot known as the “Aquarium”. Shortly after, Triggerrun would grow apart as “Knegil” would come to a spiritual crossroads. The choice, either to continue to chase the dream of music or raising a family. The latter proved victorious, ultimately sealing the group's fate. In the meantime, H3TheArtist (Herbert Bowens,Jr.) would continue his love of dance at Florida A & M University. He marched with the world- renown Marching 100,(Snare Drum..Z Phi 28) where he became widely known on campus as the dancing machine. His dynamic dance style, inspired by the Trigger, was further polished in the program Orchesis Contemporary Dance Theatre where he studied modern ballet, African, and tap dance. H3 was evolving as an artist and overall performer. He also pursued his passion in acting while playing the Lead Male Actor in “On Toby Time”, an off-Broadway musical about a man chasing his dreams in NewYork during the Chitlin Circuit and The Scarecrow in FAMU'S rendition of the Wiz. In each musical production, Herb used his acting, singing, and dancing super powers earning him the name…H3 (a triple threat). After graduating from FAMU with a degree in elementary education, H3 moved to Atlanta to continue pursuing his dreams in the arts. In Atlanta, he landed his first role in the blockbuster movie Drumline(2002) directed by Charles Stone/Twentieth Century Fox and Stomp the Yard (2007) directed by Sylvain White/Rainforest Production. Herbert was amongst a very select group of dancers cast as a Theta Nu Theta (Fictitious Fraternity) which represented a band of elite dancers/steppers. A musician since elementary school, H3 began quest as a solo artist, writing and composing music which he released through the independent distributor DistroKid . Herb's “Steppin Out” album demonstrates his lyrical range, vocal style, and diverse content which captures the playful, romantic, and theatrical side of love. In addition, H3 crafted a master musical ensemble titled,”The Carousel-A Poetry Based Musical”, a play about never giving up on your dreams. An inspirational play turned true through his own perseverance and journey that has brought him back full circle to the brotherhood, Triggerrun! Acting as the glue to hold the group together, Syncere(Nathaniel Whitfield) kept the members in touch, never letting the dream fade. In 2021, things clicked, and major events pulled Triggerrun back together again. They have refined their direction, focusing on what they truly want. Hard at work on new music, they are building an extensive catalog of work and launching a successful clothing line. The time is right, giving Triggerrun their chance to finally share their voice and leave their musical footprint. Using music as a therapy to express pain and process heartache, this opportunity has proven to be a miracle in each of their lives. Their passion has been rekindled, and Triggerrun is remembering a true love that will never fail them: Music. Triggerrun's underground music revolution created an undeniable cosmic shift that is still resonating within the industry at large. What began as a music and dance troupe is now a lifelong brotherhood. Triggerrun maintains a delicate balance of curating, critiquing, and refining their work together. Their sound is derived from a collection of hip-hop roots, blended with an R&B flair. Re-emerging from the underground with its eclectic New York City meets ATL bass thumping, Dirty South infusion debut single, Turn Up!

There's nothing more totally "New Orleans" than poboys, drag queens, and Cowboy Mouth. That's why, till we can go back in bars and hang out, Happy Hour photographer Jill Lafleur picks this show as her favorite from the past few years to revisit. Drag Queens Poppy Tooker is New Orleans first lady of food. From her weekly TV appearances on Steppin’ Out to to her weekly radio show and podcast, Poppy is the best known foodie in the city. Poppy’s latest venture is a collaboration with a large group of drag queens to produce a strong of drag queen brunches around town, culminating in her 6th book, simply called Drag Queen Brunch. You could have found out any of this information in any New Orleans publication. What you won’t have heard anywhere but here is the explanation to this sentences Poppy utters by way of her current situation: “I’m not dead and I’m not knocked up.” Cowboy Mouth Fred LeBlanc is the larger than life front man of the band Cowboy Mouth. If you’ve ever been to a Cowboy Mouth show or heard any of Fred’s media appearances you have probably thought Fred’s life is an open book. Well, there might be a couple of chapters of the book you hadn’t heard about. Probably doubtful that you’ve heard Fred’s opinions on marriage or cross-dressing anywhere else. Or known anything about his relationship to the Poboy shop, Melba’s Po Boys. Poboys Scott Wolfe Sr is the owner of Melba’s Po Boy Shop, on the corner of North Claiborbne and Elysian Fields, the busiest Po Boy shop in the world. Scott is also the owner of the wildly successful local New Orleans grocery chain, Wagner’s. Yes, he’s the marketing genius who came up with the slogan “You can’t beat Wagner’s Meat.” Scott’s extraordinary flair for marketing can be found in full display at Melba’s where they’re open 24 hours a day, have a giant laundromat where each machine is named and themed for a local New Orleans celebrity – you can wash your clothes in the Fred LeBlanc machine for example – and a 24/7 daiquiri shop.  This Happy Hour is a classic no-holds-barred conversation with people who are comfortable in their own skin and not hesitant about telling it like it is. If you’d like to see Jill Lafleur’s photos from this show recorded live at Wayfare,  you’ll find them along with much more right here.

Steve was born in Bed-Stuy,Brooklyn where he grew up.His family’s apartment was over a tavern named Jack’s Bar and Grill. He remembers hearing Coltrane,Miles, and Nina on the juke box that had the latest jazz releases on them. Those sounds seeped into his soul forever. He played drums in junior high and high school and his musical appreciation and musical knowledge was that much more established. However, years passed with no musical involvement, and he had a family to raise. But, then he heard Eddie Jefferson,“the godfather of vocalese”.That was the seed that blossomed into where Steve is today. Combining three musical genres in your debut album may be risky, but Joe Jackson never cared about playing it safe. In 1979, his first LP Look Sharp! did just that—weaving pop, ska, and punk together into a sound all its own. With songs like Is She Really Going Out With Him? and Steppin Out, his pioneering sound helped usher in the New Wave era of the early 80s, and cement his place as music royalty. Currently on tour nationwide, Jackson talks with Alec Baldwin about “fake news,” the instrument he considers to be medieval torture, and the reason he can no longer watch The Grammys.

Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

Ever wonder how Steppin’ Out of Babylon got started and how it has remained fresh and relevant for over (change to "nearly") thirty years? Have you been curious to know a more about the intrepid host/producer who has brought you some of the most important, insightful and inspiring voices from the front lines of the social, political and environmental movements? Then this is the show you’ve been waiting for! In this wonderful anniversary edition, her friend and fellow activist and author, Dr. Margret Paloma Pavel, interviews Steppin’ Out of Babylon creator, producer and host Sue Supriano. She discusses the childhood roots of her interests in radio, social activism and issues of racism and political justice. Supriano talks about many of the early radio documentaries she did, including the first one about her friend Max Scheer the Founder and Editor of the world famous underground newspaper, the Berkeley Barb, along with her early affiliations with KPFA, Pacifica Radio in Berkeley, California. In the early 1980’s during a trip to Jamaica she interviewed many performers at Reggae Sunsplash as well as a range of other Jamaicans which eventually evolved into both a documentary on Jamaica as well as a first show in the Steppin’ Out of Babylon series. This is a wonderful, wide ranging conversation in which Supriano shares not only remembrances of some of the most interesting and intense interviews and stories she has produced, but also her personal vision of social justice, her belief about the power and importance of independent media and low-power FM radio, along with advice for young people interested in getting involved in media activism including an overview of some great existing resources. She concludes with a touching explanation of the values and motivations which have sustained her in this work over the decades and an insightful view as to what the future holds and how we can work toward a more peaceful, egalitarian society. -JTInterviewed by Dr. Margeret Paloma Pavel.

Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

Jeffrey M. Smith exposes the risks of genetically modified food in his book, Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies about the Safety of Genetically Engineered Foods You're Eating. He has been a guest on Steppin' Out of Babylon in the past. In this show he focuses especially on his recent experience in Southern Africa from where he returned only hours before the interview.Smith holds up the people of Zambia as heroes in that they refused the genetically engineered corn offered them by the US even though such a large number of Zambians are infected with AIDS and their immune systems are weak due to a variety of reasons, including hunger. Eventually they accepted asking that they not receive the seeds, but milled corn, so their corn would not be polluted by the GM seeds. The US refused and a US official is quoted as saying they want to pollute the Zambian seed supply to make the farmers dependent on buying Monsato genetically engineered seeds. Fortunately South Africa milled the seeds first so Zambia is not getting raw seeds but it is clear that Monsanto intends to control all the seeds in the world. It is corn and soy that are almost all genetically engineered right now.Smith gives one example after another of the corruption and manipulation of science and scientists in order to get the okay to continue with their genetically engineering of seeds-- whistleblowers are threatened, studies are distorted and full of lies, etc.. Given these facts he also talks a lot about the importance of diet (so many chronic and acute diseases are based on diet!!) and avoiding GM foods. Eating organic is best, not only because it avoids genetic engineering, but also because it is MUCH more nutritious than non-organic food. Even food that is labeled non-GMO is better than GMO food however. He's also produced a video/DVD, Hidden Dangers in Kid's Meals -- which can be downloaded for free and distributed to educate and protect our children and their parents. Soon he'll be working on two new books.

Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

David Seaborg, evolutionary biologist, speaks with Jan Lundberg for Steppin' Out of Babylon. David Seaborg is founder and president of the World Rainforest Fund based in Walnut Creek, California. As global warming and climate change dry out the rainforest and cause unprecedented fires, and development such as timber and oil extraction ravage the rainforest and the indigenous cultures, the need escalates dramatically to save species, the climate and the local tribes. David Seaborg links the plight of the rainforests to the consumption habits of U.S. consumers and whether nature preserves can rescue critical habitat. Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

Sue Supriano, Host/Producer of Steppin' Out of Babylon, interviewed by Jan Lundberg of Culture Change (www.culturechange.org).The story is that when Sue Supriano was about to interview Jan Lundberg about their common concern of "peak oil" and positive responses to it, Supriano was too tired so Jan Lundberg turned the microphone and interviewed her. You can learn a bit about her and her activist background, how the name Steppin' Out of Babylon came about and what it means. Supriano also responds to Lundberg's questions about her impressions of activism then and now. This could be the beginning of a new working relationship for Steppin' Out of Babylon.

Steppin' Out of Babylon: Radio Interviews

Ruppert was in town to talk to the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco on Aug. 31. While in the Bay Area he did an interview for Steppin' Out of Babylon. He talks about his upcoming book-- available in about mid-September from www.fromthewilderness.com and from general release in October. The title is Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil. It's a very well documented account of what happened on 9/11/2001 among other things. In this interview Ruppert describes what prevented planes from immediately intercepting the hijacked planes as they normally would have, and he names Cheney as being in charge of the operations of that day from the White House. Don't miss this show!!!
