In this special vacation episode of Quick Charge, we explore the historic dive in global diesel demand, and whether it's being caused inflation and a slowing economy or the rapid rise in EV sales displacing millions of gallons of oil demand. In this episode, we'll focus on the rapid growth of the commercial EV market as one of the leading contributors to the global drop in diesel demand, coming perilously close to asking the question: has peak oil come and gone? Electric Semi-Trucks Make No Sense. Electric rigs have to be charged more times on a trip. It will mess up a drivers sleep. It just makes no sense. Having to go 400 miles and then recharge for a certain amount of time will make the trip longer and more expensive. I guess congress and all those that are pushing these electric beasts, truly believe the garbage they are pushing on the American people. We are not buying it, pardon the pun but we are just not buying into the idea that electric vehicles are going to make a better economy. Electric Semi Makers Are Wacky. Recently a man on YouTube showed a video of a Tesla Semi Truck. He showed how the Tesla was beating diesel trucks up Donner Pass. Boy oh boy, the Tesla sure flew up that hill. I was amazed, for a short time. Then I remembered something. I had seen this before. I've seen this exact phenom before. Let me see, oh yeah, I remember driving an empty trailer up Sand Stone Mountain. I remember blowing by all the loaded down rigs. Yeah yeah, that's right. See this joker that ran the video, never mentioned how heavy the Tesla was verses the diesel rigs. I bet if we could have weighed them all, the Tesla might come up short. Next time "cyberguy", maybe you can get your facts straight and your information clear. Episode #088:Well folks it is Halloween and here they go again! The only holiday probably more suited for these two than this one must be April Fool's Day. For the two of them to just have one of those “normal conversations” that you hear people talk about, is highly unlikely to ever happen. So please do not hold your breath waiting for it to happen.Today once they get down to brass tactics, they are loopdy-dooping about how the look of semi-trucks have changed. They do not seem to be able to just have a conversation without going off into left field. There is talk about “The best of the best of the best, Sir”, (Men in Black) Taco Bell, Taco Tuesday, “Swing Batter Batter” (Ferris Buehler's' Day Off) and just their normal everyday goofiness. But it by no means defines their knowledge or abilities. Especially in the Trucking Industry! They go through the evolution of the aerodynamics of both the truck and the trailer. When it comes to the looks of the Rig, it is not necessarily the best looking, in their opinions. However, the direction that Rigs are going is definitely better for fuel economy and aerodynamics. For looks, they both seem to like those classic long flat nose Big Rigs looked. Like the Classic Freightliners, Peterbilt's, Western Star's and all the other Beautiful Rigs of the past. By past they both seem to feel that means pre-Y2K.From there they start talking about the attachments on the rear of trailers. Some of the rese arch that Janet did sounds very amusing in an accident-causing sort of way! Like large, long balloon-cones that inflate with movement and deflate when the trailer stops moving. And there lies the problem as they say. Something about dragging a Volkswagen for a few hundred miles that got caught in the balloon. Or being caught going through the tollbooths on major highways. And the discussion and comparison goes on with talk about apples and watermelons being the same as some of the Rigs out there. No matter how you stack it up, these two have their moments where they talk facts “just the facts Ma'am” (Dragnet, basically). But it is rare that they just talk numbers, usually they keep things lively, upbeat, and entertaining. And let's not get them going about the weight of electric trucks, weight, ruts in the road, and more! So, if you like this episode and have your own story to tell, then don't forget to go to Formerly known as twitter to continue the conversation!Full podcast show notes available here:  https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e88Southwest Truck Driver TrainingSHIFT YOUR CAREER INTO HIGH GEARTRUCK DRIVER & CDL TRAININGLifetime job placement assistance.Individualized truck driver training.Financial aid for CDL training programs. You choose training in manual or automatic shifting trucks!! RIPPING OFF YOUR OWN COMPANY. There is a growing rate of drivers that are stealing from their own company. Some are doing whats called "Padding the fuel card"! The way the scam works is, a driver finds a small truck stop that will work the scam with them. The clerk behind the counter runs an extra amount of cash on the card (which never goes in the tank) and then they split to booty. But beware drivers, sooner or later your company will figure it out, they always do. Either your fuel mileage is not adding up or something subtle will catch someones eye back at the terminal. Once caught, you will soon learn that the couple of dollars is not worth your career. Finding another carrier to hire you once you have been marked down as a thief at a trucking company, will be next to impossible. Volvo on strike again It has been over ten years since Volvo has had a strike. Recently thousands of union worker walked out when a deal was not met. Volvo offered more incentive but apparently it was not good enough. Negotiations are suppose to resume April 26th, 2022. This not only hurts Volvo but it also hurts suppliers that produce product needed for the assembly line itself. In this writer's opinion, Volvo should raise the workers to a top standard in the industry, after all the cost of the rigs are going up along with profit and why not pass that onto the worker. Another thing to consider is, last year many places were shut down due to covid 19, which means production is behind. With that being said, Volvo runs the risk of losing customers that are desperately seeking to increase their fleets. 18 YEAR OLD TRUCKERS & ELECTRIC SEMI'S. There is now proposed legislation that would allow 18 to 20 year old CDL holder cross state lines. There has been for a long time, 49 states that allow an 18 yearly man or woman, to get their CDL (Commercial drivers license) and driver intrastate only. But with the driver shortage and new safety rules that would apply to these young wanna-be drivers, it is making to sense to allow a new bread of drivers on Americas highways and interstates. The rules that will apply are as follows. It will start with a two-step program of additional training that includes performance benchmarks. They will need to complete at least 400 hours of on-duty time and 240 hours of driving time with an experienced driver in the cab. Thats right 640 hours of total training verses the average driver that is 21 and older, trains at an average of 160 hours of total trucking school classroom and on sight driving. This is sounding like "old school mentoring", you know like "back in the day". We look forward to this new and exciting program that will help the younger generation get off to a well deserved career. 18 Year old Truckers & Electric Semi's Electric semi's and Zero-Emissions is the goal OK, so Zero-emissions? Will it happen? Can it happen? Hmmm, Im sure that we can reduce allot but Zero? This writer will have to see it with my own eyes. Lets start with the trucking industry. Truck manufacturers are capable of producing 600,000 trucks a year. With the current count of 4.5 million class 4 to class 8 trucks on the road, it will hardly happen over night. It is estimated that we might hit 38 percent by the year 2035. The Another thing to be considered is the fact that none of these rigs have been proven to last or to pull 80,000 pound loads in all terrains, including steep mountain grades where a battery will be tested, with what would seem to be impossible strains to overcome. Lets see, what else can we say on the negative side of a zero-emissions electric generation? Oh yeah, how about the 4 wheeler industry, wow, thats allot of switching over. And how about all those car collectors? Do you really thinks that all those collectors will lay down and be told they can never start up that 67 chevy Camaro again and drive it around. Then there's is the aviation industry. How are we going to get an all 747 electric Jetliner to fly as efficient and reliable as the planes of today? It doesn't stop there, you also have chain saw, lawn mayors, ATV,s, power boats and the list goes on and on and on. Lets also not forget the fact that there are countries like the USA, Iran and many many countries that rely on the sale of petroleum. Are we prepared to put that trillio0n dollar industry out of business? No, I doubt that will happen the way they want it to. Tuesday 24th April 2018. The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 16th April, shows 19,675 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,673 Model 3’s being built per week. A quick heads up, in the UK the Commercial Vehicle Show starts today for 3 days. The new long range e-NV200 will be on show, with the 40kWh battery which should allow for around 110-120 real world miles of use for the van / people carrier. VW says they can’t keep up with demand for their Plug Ins, the Golf GTE and Passat GTE, so much so they’re closed the order books for now as factories are flat out. And I saw a tweet today from someone in the know that Hyundai IONIQ waiting time in Germany is almost a year! If anyone from Hyundai is listening please contact me and tell me that’s wrong, and that people can get it quicker. And lots was happening on Earth Day last weekend, including Washington DC mayor Muriel Bowser welcoming a fleet of 14 new pure EV Protera buses to start service on May 1, carrying 4.8million passengers a year. Plus City Furniture tweeted on Earth Day they had ordered 5 Tesla Semi Trucks, the first furniture retailer in the US to go electric.   TESLA BACK IN BUSINESS Elon Musk’s recentl all-staff email confirmed the rumours, both Gigafactory 1 and Fremont were to shut down for a planned 3-5 days to upgrade equipment and systems needed to unlock the next wave of production targets, up to 6,000 Model 3’s per week by the end of June. And it looks like that shutdown is over, because 5,170 new Model 3 VINs have been registered. A reminder that tracks VIN numbers is one of the metrics used by the Bloomberg tracker I mention at the start of the show. However it’s only one way of measuring and, at times, not the most accurate. Previous weeks have seen them register between 3,000 and 4,800 VINs with NHTSA so this is large batch. This could well keep them going for the next 2 weeks, if the tracker figures are correct of 3,000 Model 3s per week.   FERRARI’S SILENT FUTURE Two years ago Ferrari said never to an electric car. Bossman Sergio Marchinne is not a fan! Fast forward to today and they’ve been testing a hybrid at their own test track in Maranello. We reported on the video last month which showed, according to the YouTuber, a Ferrari taking off in silence. Bloomberg say: “Next year, Ferrari will start offering the technology in a sports car, its first model that can run entirely on battery power for any significant distance. The hybrid engine will soon be an option on all new models, and from 2020 the carmaker will use it as the sole drivetrain for its first sport-utility vehicle, which Marchionne says will be the fastest SUV on the market.”   ABB BRING THE TERRA Maker of charging stations and sponsors of Formula E, everyones favourite Swedish-Swiss tech company ABB is busy this week showing off some new toys. Although with other charging groups such as CHAdeMO, they’re at an industrial technology show in Hannover all this week and attendees are getting a glimpse of their 350kW Terra chargers. The CEO of ABB, Ulrich Spiesshofer said in Hanover: “This high-power fast charger provides electric vehicles with up to seven times more range in the same charging time than with previous models” You may remember, if you’ve listened to previous podcasts, these are the chargers chosen by Electrify America for the 2,000 new chargers in almost 500 locations to be rolled out this year and next. They’ll cater for all options, CCS and CHAdeMo, although the CHAdeMO side will be software limited to 50kW whilst tests are ongoing, and then they’ll be delimited to 100kW.   VOLVO TO SHARE THEIR EXPERTISE Volvo said yesterday they want to share as much as possible when it comes to their battery technology, to keep down R&D costs across its brands, which include Japan’s UD Trucks, Scania and Mack Trucks in the US. Battery technology is not only the differentiator for the most part, but the biggest cost of many EVs. Lars Stenqvist, chief technology officer at Volvo Group Trucks Technology, told Reuters: ““We’re really striving to reuse a lot when it comes to expensive components, which are expensive when it comes to development and production costs ... not only between the truck brands but also the bus brands and construction equipment. The benefit of the group is that we can get high volumes when we re-use components across the group.” We recently covered the story of Volvo’s first battery powered medium-duty trucks for deliveries and refuse collection. They joined Mitsubishi’s Fuso all electric truck which is already in use in the USA and Europe, and VW aren’t far behind with theirs too thanks to an alliance with Toyota, with the aim of using scale to reduce costs.   A GLIMPSE INTO AN ELECTRIC FUTURE London had a remarkable drop in air pollution on Sunday, in fact is was down by 89%. What could cause pollution to plummet like that for such a specific time period? The answer is people who choose to run 26.2 miles on a Sunday morning and for some of them, that’s their idea of a good time! Marathon runners are mad, and I know because I’ve completed the London marathon, but my knees thanks me for moving in Triathlons. King’s College London took air samples during the London Marathon on Sunday when combustion-engined cars, buses and trucks area banned from the centre of the city to make room for runners. It’s the particularly harmful NOx Nitrogen Oxides which fell almost 90%. And it gives us a glimpse into the future of what the most polluted cities will be like when only EVs are being used for personal and public transport, a change which can’t come quick enough. And all thanks to 40,000 runners. Which, incidentally, is the same amount of people who die prematurely from emissions every year in Great Britain. For any cities watching on, maybe those who have announced their own permanent bans on petrol and diesel, the results will show how quickly the air quality can start to improve, and give them the confidence to move forwards with only allowing EVs on the roads.   CHINESE BATTERY FIRM REPORTED TO BE SETTING UP ON VW DOORSTEP For anyone who doubts the Chinese are coming to make your cars, just like they make that mini-computer you have next to called a mobile phone, or cell phone, just take a look at the news happening almost daily now. They have big plans for the USA and Europe, and not just with their own brands, but with the parts used to power other makers as well. Chinese battery maker Tianjin Lishen are looking to open a sales office in the land of the luxury European car, Germany, so it can supply them with the batteries needed for all their EVs. Reuters claim: “A source close to Volkswagen said the company is in advanced talks with Tianjin Lishen on lithium-ion battery supply contracts, but agreements have not yet been signed. Any new office would be located near Wolfsburg, where Volkswagen has its headquarters, the source at Tianjin said, declining to give more specific detail.” What does that mean? Well VW want to sell 3million electrified vehicles annually by 2025 and each of their 300 models will be electrified by 2030. As supply chains go, on the numbers VW work with, those deals will indeed be in negotiations.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
