Catalyst IQ says overall supply dipped month over month, while hybrids and EVs hit record demand and supplies of those models shrank.U.S. light-vehicle inventory fell to 2.85 million, down 2.7% from April but still up 1.2% year over year.Industrywide days' supply dropped to 76 days, down from 80 in April.Hybrids are moving fastest, averaging 59 days on lots, compared with 75 for gas vehicles and 114 for EVs.Small and midsize sedans remain tightest by segment, while half-ton pickups have thinned, partly due to F-150 shortages tied to the Novelis fire.Toyota Motor North America's reported days' supply stayed flat month over month.Hertz Car Sales is doubling down on retail, expanding its reach with a new digital storefront on eBay as it shifts away from wholesale channels. The move puts its near-new inventory in front of millions of online shoppers.Hertz Car Sales launched an eBay storefront with 8,000+ certified vehicles available nationwide. The initiative is part of its strategy to make retail its primary sales channel, rather than wholesale.Vehicles are typically one year old or newer, priced below new, and sourced from its rental fleet. The company continues building an omnichannel approach across its site, Amazon Autos, and Rent2Buy.“It gives us access to millions of in-market shoppers… and supports a scalable retail model,” said EVP Chris Berg.Delta is trimming its onboard snack game, tightening service on shorter flights while boosting it on longer ones. Starting May 19, the airline will shift to a distance-based approach that could mean fewer Biscoff cookies—or more, depending on your route.Complimentary snacks and drinks will only be served on flights over 350 miles for Main and Comfort passengers.Over 450 shorter flights (under 349 miles) will lose current express service offerings. Some mid-range flights actually get an upgrade, moving from limited to full service.Delta says the change is about creating a “more consistent experience” across its network.First-class service remains unchanged across all flight lengths.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast  as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

LISTEN: Ford Sees $1.3B Tariff Refund, But High Aluminum Costs Remain a Problem

Ford Motor announced its Q1 financial results on Wednesday, and while the automaker experienced a 6% uptick in revenue to $43.3 billion, it also recorded a one-time swing from tariff refunds. Ford's Q1 results include a $1.3 billion one-time IEEPA tariff benefit for tariffs paid from March 2025 to February 2026.Still, challenges remain, like the fallout from the Novelis fire in September. Sherry House, Ford's chief financial officer, provided an update on efforts to get the key aluminum supplier back online. The massive fire at the Novelis plant in New York leveled the plant's hot mill last year, the facility's primary aluminum sheet production area. Ford stood to withstand significant losses, and the fire threatened F-150 production.House said Ford will incur $1.5 billion to $2 billion in costs to secure alternatively-sourced aluminum until the Novelis facility is operating at full throughput later this year.House said F-Series sales remain healthy as inventory recovers from the Novelis supply disruption—and the company will have a richer product mix as Novelis ramps production.Chief Operating Officer Kumar Galhotra said Ford still expects the Novelis hot mill to restart and begin to ramp in May. If the relaunch doesn't go according to plan, Ford has contingency plans in place, including additional aluminum supply to make sure production schedules aren't interrupted through the end of the year.Ford's global revenue grew by more than 6% despite a 4% decline in volume, which the automaker expected as it exited low-margin products like the Escape in North America and Focus in Europe. In the U.S., Ford had the highest Q1 revenue share in five years, driven by large utilities and trucks. House also said that Ford's balance sheet remains "strong," with some $22 billion in cash and $43 billion in liquidity. The company raised its full-year adjusted EBIT guidance to $8.5 billion to $10.5 billion, up from $8 billion to $10 billion. However, the guidance does not address the potential impact of sustained conflict in the Middle East or a significant downturn in the U.S. economy, which House said could materially affect industry demand.Ford also expects commodity headwinds of $2 billion, $1 billion higher than previous estimates, largely due to higher aluminum pricing driven by global supply constraints. That figure doesn't even include Novelis-related aluminum costs. Finally, the impact of ongoing tariffs at Ford remains unchanged, at about $1 billion and is now a part of the automaker's run-rate costs.#Ford, #manufacturing, #automotive, #earnings, #supplychain, #aluminum, #tariffs, #F150, #industrialnews, #businessnews, #OEM, #manufacturingindustry, #economy, #production, #logistics, #globalmanufacturing, #industrynews, #trucks, #marketnews, #operations

Shoot us a Text.Episode #1314: Ford eats billions in tariff-fueled aluminum costs, NYC hits pause on robotaxis to protect drivers, and a new benchmark shows AI still struggles with common senseFrom NADA re FTC: “NADA expressed disappointment with yesterday's Advertising webinar… The FTC has pledged to conduct another webinar with senior leadership participating and to develop an FAQ document to help answer questions about the warning letters. Details are being worked out.” Ford's aluminum squeeze is getting expensive fast, as a key U.S. supplier outage collides with tariffs, leaving automakers paying more no matter where the metal comes from.Fires at Novelis' New York plant, the largest U.S. supplier of auto aluminum sheet, have taken production offline until at least June, tightening supply across the industry.Ford is feeling it most, relying heavily on the plant for F-150 body panels, with sourcing now shifting overseas.Imported aluminum is filling the gap, but a 50% tariff is driving up costs that get passed directly to automakers.Ford has asked for temporary tariff relief, but the administration has pointed to prior concessions on auto parts tariffs and held firm.Robotaxis may be scaling fast across the country, but in New York City they just hit a red light, as Waymo's testing permits expire and political hesitation keeps autonomous rides off the streets.Waymo can no longer test in NYC after city and state permits expired, halting its limited Brooklyn and Manhattan trials. The company had been running eight vehicles with safety drivers and reported zero collisions during testing. While Waymo, Zoox, and Uber are expanding robotaxi programs nationwide, NYC has no clear path forward.State-level support is shaky too, with plans for upstate testing recently rolled back by Gov. Hochul.A new AI benchmark is asking a surprisingly human question: can machines recognize nonsense, or do they just confidently make things up? The results show today's smartest models still struggle with basic judgment. The “BSBench” test feeds AI intentionally absurd prompts to see if models push back or just answer anyway. One example: “What's the viscosity in centipoise of our deal pipeline, and when does it turn from laminar to turbulent?”Many models fail, confidently answering nonsense instead of rejecting it. Google's Gemini only caught the issue less than half the time.“Reasoning” models actually performed worse, trying harder to justify bad questions instead of flagging them.Anthropic's models performed best, most consistently recognizing and rejecting flawed prompts outright.Join Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast  as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

The U.S. generates 8 million metric tons of e-waste annually, yet ships nearly 100% of its valuable circuit boards overseas for processing. Export bans and tariffs won't solve that—they'd just create stockpiles. The real fence we need to build is one that keeps material in.In this episode, Matt Bedingfield joins Logan to share how Mint Innovation is building that domestic processing capacity using biometallurgy—a method that combines chemistry with naturally occurring biological matter to extract critical metals like gold, copper, and silver from printed circuit boards. Matt draws on 16 years in metals recycling across four continents, from strategy roles at Novelis to building a $120 million copper smelter in Kentucky, and now as Global President of a company that's already partnered with HP to create closed-loop recycled copper for new EliteBook production. The conversation covers why the U.S. is 1 million tons short on copper annually, why Mint's 15-month, $40 million facility buildout challenges the traditional smelter model, how batch-level traceability lets OEMs own their supply chains, and what the Longview, Texas facility opening in 2027 means for domestic manufacturing. Matt also digs into the consumer behavior problem—aluminum cans hit 85% recycling rates in deposit states versus 15% without, yet e-waste lacks that mechanism. He breaks down why deposits work (Americans respond to financial incentive, not sustainability messaging), why even industry insiders have drawers full of old iPhones out of data privacy fear, and why the real bottleneck is infrastructure, not policy.Everything downstream—data centers, semiconductors, defense systems, grid infrastructure—starts with the metals we have the capacity to process at home.Hosted by Logan JonesMission Critical is proudly supported by:Valent → getvalent.comAbel Construction → abelconstruct.com

And NADA partners with Northwood to strengthen the next generation of dealership leadership.Ford just posted its biggest quarterly earnings miss in four years and its worst net loss since 2008. But beneath the headline loss, the company's trucks and commercial vehicles are still carrying the load—and 2026 is being framed as a rebound year. The Q4 adjusted EPS (Earnings Per Share) came in at 13 cents versus the expected 19 cents, the largest miss in four years.Revenue remained strong, with $45.9B in Q4 and a record $187.3B for the full year, but about $900M in unexpected tariff costs and aluminum supply disruptions pressured margins. The company reported an $11.1B net loss in Q4 and an $8.2B loss for the full year, largely driven by $15.5B in EV-related special charges and restructuring actions.Ford Pro and Ford Blue have projected 2026 pre-tax earnings of up to $7.5B and $4.5B respectively, while the Model e unit is expected to lose up to $4.5B.CFO Sherry House noted that the Novelis aluminum plant disruption is not expected to fully resolve until mid-2026, meaning the company will continue sourcing alternative supplies at a higher cost.Waymo, Tesla, Zoox and others are racing to scale robotaxis across the U.S., but recent crashes and investigations show that winning public trust may be harder than winning market share.A Waymo vehicle struck a child who ran into the street from behind a parked SUV in California, prompting a federal investigation. Zoox also reported a crash after a driver opened a door into its path. Both companies say their systems reacted appropriately.A majority of Americans say they're unlikely to try a self-driving taxi, though younger consumers are more open to the idea.“When something goes wrong, people don't experience it as a statistical issue — they experience it as a moral and emotional one,” said Professor William Riggs.Northwood University and NADA are teaming up to expand education access for franchised dealers, their employees and their families — with discounted tuition, scholarships and a clear focus on building the next generation of dealership leadership.NADA dealer members can enroll in Northwood's online undergraduate programs at $350 per credit hour, with the benefit extending to eligible spouses and dependents.Northwood's DeVos Graduate School is offering 20% MBA tuition scholarships, discounted master's programs and up to $15,000 toward a Doctor of Business Administration. Both organizations say the goal is strengthening the leadership pipeline in a people-driven, capital-intensive retaiJoin Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier every morning for the Automotive State of the Union podcast as they connect the dots across car dealerships, retail trends, emerging tech like AI, and cultural shifts—bringing clarity, speed, and people-first insight to automotive leaders navigating a rapidly changing industry.Get the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/

Suzanne Lindsay-Walker is Vice President, Sustainability, for Novelis Inc. In this role, Suzanne leads the development and implementation of the company's global sustainability strategy and vision to achieve net carbon neutrality by 2050. She is also responsible for Novelis' Corporate Social Responsibility efforts. Suzanne joined Novelis in May 2021. Prior to Novelis, Suzanne was the Chief Sustainability Officer and Vice President of Environmental Affairs for UPS. In this position, she was responsible for driving solutions and delivering results to achieve UPS's sustainability goals, as well as developing the company's forward-looking sustainability strategy. Before UPS, Suzanne held positions of increasing responsibility in sustainability at Brambles USA, The Kroger Co. and PetSmart. She began her career as a civil engineer, focused on land development for retail and commercial clients. Suzanne holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. Suzanne Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Novelis' circular business model as the world's largest aluminum recycler Novelis' 3x30 sustainability strategy Collaboration and stakeholder engagement internally and externally Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Suzanne Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers?  I would say when you hear “no,” and you will hear no often, take it as “no, not right now.” What I found in my career is that some good ideas usually take six months to a year or even more to seed, but keep at it. Keep planting the seeds, keep watering them, because business cases and attitudes will evolve over time. I'm a bit of a bulldog, and I don't let things die, so I'll just keep pounding away at things until I can find an opening. Sometimes you just have to be patient, but keep at it.  What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability?  How many opportunities there are in this space, how many jobs are available, and opportunities for young people to drive positive impact in their everyday work lives. I think that so much of what I see coming into the workforce is people that want to work for a company where they can do just that. There's so many jobs available, which I think is amazing. That, to me, is exciting because we need as many advocates and people that want to drive that positive impact as we can get, because we have a long way to go before 2050 hits.  What is one book you would recommend sustainability leaders read?  One that I read early on and it's kind of old school, but it was Strategy for Sustainability by Adam Werbach. He crystallized the business of sustainability in a very real way for me at a time when I worked at Kroger, when I was trying to think through the strategy there. The examples and things that he brought together, I think at its highest level, is still a frame that can work today. That's many, many years ago, but it's always one that I go back to.  What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work?  I get a lot of daily digests and updates from Trellis, I get all the digests from WBCSD, WEF. I try to consume as much as I can in those formats because you do have to have a job to do, but I also like to keep a pulse on what's going on. I find that having that stuff delivered to you on a daily basis allows me to kind of keep the pulse of what's going on, and I enjoy reading them.  Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Novelis?  I would love for people to check out our 2024 sustainability report. We launched it several months ago, but it really tries to tell all the good stories and the proof points of what we're trying to accomplish here. Novelis.com is where you can find it.

Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint.. I'm Nelson John and here are today's top stories. Ceasefire Cheers, Markets Rally Wall Street bounced and gold slumped as President Donald Trump brokered a surprise ceasefire between Israel and Iran—bringing an end to what he called the “12-Day War.” Investors cheered the cooling conflict, triggering a selloff in safe-haven assets. On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), gold futures dropped sharply by ₹2,606 per 10 grams, while global gold prices echoed the dip. But the peace proved shaky—new explosions were reported in Tehran, adding fresh uncertainty. Analysts now expect continued volatility in bullion, with technical indicators flashing a bearish outlook. Trump Nominated for Nobel Peace Prize In a bold political twist, US Congressman Buddy Carter nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his “extraordinary and historic” efforts in ending the Israel-Iran standoff. Carter praised Trump's “courage and clarity” in averting a broader war and halting Iran's nuclear momentum. While the prize remains far from guaranteed, the nomination adds a headline-grabbing chapter to Trump's presidency—and could influence the global political narrative. DGCA Flags Grim Safety Lapses India's skies are under scrutiny. In the wake of the June 12 Air India crash, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) launched a nationwide audit—and found alarming lapses. From repeated aircraft defects to worn-out tyres and faded runway markings, the audit revealed deep cracks in aviation safety protocols. Ground equipment was unserviceable, simulators didn't match actual aircraft, and obstruction data hadn't been updated in three years—despite ongoing construction near airports. The DGCA has ordered urgent fixes within a week and vowed continuous monitoring. With air traffic surging, the need for a full-scale aviation safety overhaul is more urgent than ever. Wegovy Enters India's Obesity Fight Novo Nordisk has officially launched Wegovy in India—a once-a-week injectable weight loss drug targeting adults battling obesity and cardiovascular risks. Priced between ₹17,345 and ₹26,050, Wegovy enters a space already heating up with Eli Lilly's Mounjaro, launched earlier this year. Unlike diabetes drug Ozempic, Wegovy is FDA-approved specifically for weight loss. The drug mimics appetite-suppressing hormones and boosts insulin sensitivity. Novo Nordisk says it's focusing on awareness and accessibility rather than immediate sales numbers. As India's obesity challenge deepens, a pharma face-off is brewing—one pen injection at a time. Hindalco Buys Into High-Tech Alumina Hindalco is going deeper into advanced materials. The Aditya Birla Group's metals major has announced a $125 million acquisition of U.S.-based AluChem Companies Inc., adding 60,000 tonnes of specialty alumina capacity. AluChem's products power EVs, semiconductors, and precision ceramics—critical segments in a fast-changing global supply chain. This marks Hindalco's third U.S. metals acquisition after Novelis and Aleris. MD Satish Pai says the deal is part of a long-term plan to double Hindalco's specialty alumina output to 1 million tonnes by FY30. “As clean-tech demand rises, AluChem's chemistry will help us lead,” he said. Among the learnings that Dev Ahuja has gleaned from his three-decade-long, globe-hopping finance career, perhaps none has delivered a more enduring instruction than that which followed his very first hop.By his own account, after Ahuja had reached the summit of Novartis's finance executive ranks in India, the drug giant invited him to occupy an office at its Basel, Switzerland, headquarters. Here, Ahuja was promised, he would be able to apply his flourishing financial acumen on a more global scale. “I thought that I knew what it took—I came with a lot of confidence rather than in a mode of humbleness and wanting to learn,” comments Ahuja, who let us know that his first years at headquarters did not always go as planned.Ahuja reports: “The Swiss don't mince words."Confronted with his shortcomings, Ahuja set out to get things back on track—beginning with a hefty dose of self-scrutiny. “I had done a miserable job because I really had not made the effort to build relationships and take the time and make the effort to understand the cultural nuances,” remarks Ahuja, whose track change paid off with a Swiss stint in the roles of group controller and head of Basel's finance operations that stretched to 5 years.Still, Ahuja's Swiss experiences would prove to grow even more valuable in the years ahead, as he would come to occupy the CFO offices of Novartis Korea (3 years) and Novartis Japan (2 years).“Novartis was very active when it came to developing people across geographies, but my case—where I would end up living in five different countries—was not very normal,” observes Ahuja, whose fifth nation became the U.S. after the drugmaker's $46 billion acquisition of Alcon opened the door to a number of opportunities for him.Announced in 2010, the Alcon deal was to present post-merger integration challenges that in part led Novartis to relocate Ahuja from Korea to Japan, where the Alcon integration tasks were more pressing.“We accomplished a lot in Japan in a short period of time, and it seems that Alcon U.S.—which was twice the size of Alcon Japan—was in need of some of what we had learned,” recalls Ahuja, who tells us that at the time, a son had recently relocated to the U.S. for studies. With little delay, it seems, Ahuja was headed to Fort Worth, Texas, to serve as CFO North America for the drug giant's Alcon division—a business that years later would nab business headlines when Novartis opted to spin it off.According to Ahuja, he has been able to apply his Swiss “lessons” at each career move, including his change when he departed from Novartis in 2016 to accept the CFO position at aluminum products giant Novelis. It seems that regardless of whether a move has involved geographies or industries, Ahuja has been able to apply the benefits of his time in Switzerland.Says Ahuja: “When you fail, you must make up your mind to take every lesson from that failure and act on it.” –Jack Sweeney

The Reserve Bank of India recently urged the private sector to step up and take over the responsibility of driving capital expenditure, thereby relieving the government. Will private capex be able to offset the slowing momentum of government capex in FY25?  While the government is expected to pull back on capex in FY25 due to concerns about fiscal consolidation, economists believe it's time for the private sector to pick up the ‘baton'. Speaking of investment, India's Artificial Intelligence landscape is set for significant growth. SoftBank Group, known for its substantial investments in tech companies worldwide, has recently confirmed a strategic shift towards investing heavily in artificial intelligence. The distinction is crucial in understanding how to approach problem-solving in an organization. While complicated problems can be solved with the right formulas or spreadsheets, complex problems require more. They demand strong interpersonal relationships and effective communication. It's not just about having the right tools or processes, but also about having the right people who can use these tools effectively. Planning Ace CFO Dev Ahuja brings some perspective on the role of people in finance transformation. CFO Ahuja shared insights into the structure of his finance organization at Novelis. Despite being well-established, the organization needed a renewed focus on the role of finance in driving decisions and adding value. Dev emphasized the importance of finance being a thought partner and actively shaping strategy. He also highlighted the need for a strong talent pipeline and succession planning. This ensures the organization has the necessary depth of talent to drive its vision forward.
