Three Chinese manufacturers ranked among world's top 20 by sales for 1st time三家企业首度跻身全球销售额前二十In a milestone for China's semiconductor industry, three Chinese equipment manufacturers have ranked among the world's top 20 by sales for the first time in 2025, according to data from Japanese research firm Global Net. This marks an increase from just one company in the pre-stricter United States-government-restriction era of 2022, underscoring China's accelerated progress in bolstering the domestic supply chain. The progress is an outcome of Chinese companies' hard work and big investment in beefing up technological prowess, but a gap still exists in core equipment such as lithography machines, and more efforts are needed to achieve breakthroughs, experts said. The sales ranking reveals a climb for Naura Technology Group, which jumped from eighth place in 2022 to fifth in 2025. It now only trails global giants ASML, Applied Materials, Lam Research and Tokyo Electron. Founded in 2001, Naura has not yet disclosed its annual revenue for 2025, and Global Net based the ranking partially on estimated data. Financial services provider Suntime compiled forecasts from multiple securities companies to estimate Naura's revenue to stand between 46.8 and 52 billion yuan ($6.74 billion-$7.49 billion) in 2025. New to the list at 13th place is Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment Inc China, or AMEC, whose etching equipment comes close to the cutting edge. In chipmaking, etching is the key process of selectively removing unwanted material layers from a silicon wafer to engrave precise 3D patterns, circuits and transistor structures. Shanghai Micro Electronics Equipment, which specializes in lithography machines that "print" circuit patterns onto silicon wafers, secured the 20th position. While acknowledging generational gaps with market leader ASML, the Shanghai-based company's presence highlights China's domestic capability in this most critical and challenging segment. Expanding the list to the top 30 would include two more Chinese firms — ACM Research and Hwatsing Technology. This collective ascent is widely viewed as a direct response to US-led export controls on advanced semiconductor technologies, which catalyzed China's drive for greater self-sufficiency in chipmaking tools. Roger Sheng, vice-president of research at US market research company Gartner, said: "It's fair to say that Chinese companies' technological gap with international industry leaders is continuously narrowing. This progress has provided strong support for domestic chip manufacturers in their technological upgrades and production expansion efforts, even amid restrictions on access to US technology and equipment." The manufacturing of advanced chips involves over 1,000 process steps, each requiring specialized equipment. Chinese suppliers can now cover equipment for almost every stage, including deposition, etching and cleaning. This burgeoning ecosystem includes a wave of emerging startups, experts said. Yin Zhiyao, chairman and general manager of AMEC, said at a meeting in May 2025 that the company's product portfolios include 30 percent of all the integrated circuit equipment categories, and it aims to collaborate with partners to offer 60 percent of all high-end IC equipment categories over the next five to 10 years. Yin said that AMEC would soon complete the development of more than 20 types of thin-film equipment that are subject to international export restrictions to China, and the company aims to finish the development of nearly 40 thin film equipment by 2029. Thin film equipment in chipmaking refers to specialized machinery used to deposit atomic-level layers of conductive, insulating or semiconducting materials onto silicon wafers. China's massive domestic market, now the world's largest for chipmaking equipment, also provides a powerful launchpad. The global semiconductor industry association SEMI, which has more than 3,000 member companies, estimated that worldwide sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment would reach $133 billion in 2025, surpassing the previous record of $104.3 billion in 2024 and setting an all-time high. lithography machines /lɪˈθɒɡrəfi məˈʃiːnz/光刻机etching equipment /ˈetʃɪŋ ɪˈkwɪpmənt/刻蚀设备cutting edge /ˈkʌtɪŋ edʒ/尖端/前沿silicon wafer /ˈsɪlɪkən ˈweɪfə/硅晶圆integrated circuit /ˈɪntɪɡreɪtɪd ˈsɜːkɪt/集成电路thin-film equipment /θɪn fɪlm ɪˈkwɪpmənt/薄膜设备conductive /kənˈdʌktɪv/导电的insulating /ˈɪnsəleɪtɪŋ/绝缘的

Enter for your chance to a win a copy of "Faceplant: FREE Yourself from Failure's Funk" - http://ChainOfLearning.com/60We all know that moment where something falls apart.A project slips. A conversation goes sideways. The promotion doesn't happen. We call it “failure,” but it's often not the mistake itself that stops us.It's the fear, the funk, and the uncertainty that follow. And those emotions can hold us back far more than the faceplant ever did.In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Melisa Buie and Keeley Hurley—seasoned leaders in engineering, quality, and continuous improvement and the co-authors of Faceplant: FREE Yourself from Failure's Funk.Together, we explore what really happens beneath the surface when we stumble—and what it takes to get back up with clarity, confidence, and intention. Just like Daruma dolls represent the Japanese proverb “Fall down seven times, get up eight,” always righting themselves when knocked over, our path to success comes from acknowledging the stumbles, setbacks, and faceplants that are inherent along the way. What matters is that we don't get stuck—we get up and learn our way forward.YOU'LL LEARN:What's at risk when leaders fear failure, and how organizations unintentionally teach people to avoid mistakesThe FREE model (Focus, Reflect, Explore, Engage) as a practical way to get back up, learn forward, and regain clarity after a setbackEmotional hijacks to watch for—including the four instinctive patterns in the Conspirator Matrix: machine, magician, statue, and satelliteWhy embracing a growth mindset frees you to experiment, learn, and release perfection when things don't go as plannedContinuous improvement practices like reflection (post-mortems) and anticipation (pre-mortems) that strengthen learning before and after challenges occurIf a setback has ever left you uncertain about your next step in building a people-centered culture, this conversation offers a compassionate, practical path to learn your way forward when you fall down.ABOUT MY GUESTS:Dr. Melisa Buie is a laser physicist–turned–problem solver with a PhD in Nuclear Engineering/Plasma Physics and decades of leadership in manufacturing at Coherent, Lam Research, Applied Materials, and Advanced Energy. She's published 40+ papers, holds 6 patents, and is a Six Sigma Black Belt. Melisa is the co-author of Faceplant: FREE Yourself from Failure's Funk, where she turns hard-won lessons into practical wisdom for navigating setbacks.Keeley Hurley is a continuous improvement leader with 20+ years in engineering, manufacturing, and quality, and a Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence. Known for her humility and humor, she brings real-world experience from the many “faceplants” that shaped her problem-solving approach. Lam Research (LRCX) just released its September 2025 quarter earnings. Can the wafer fab equipment leader sustain its run?We break down the critical China sales concern (43% of revenue) and the US BIS affiliate rule impact, which forecasts a $200 million revenue hit in the December quarter and $600 million for calendar year 2026. Management expects demand from other regions (U.S., Taiwan, Korea) to offset these restrictions.Foundry, led by TSMC and other chip fabs, drove 60% of sales. Rising NAND demand is a key long-term tailwind. Q3 revenue was $5.32 billion. Lam's large customer service revenue (roughly one-third of the business) remains a vital asset for customers repurposing equipment. We discuss why we're now advocating for patience with the stock after a 40% run-up, while noting the 2026 outlook may be stronger than current forward valuations imply.Join us on Discord with Semiconductor Insider, sign up on our website: www.chipstockinvestor.com/membershipSupercharge your analysis with AI! Episode page with video, transcript, and more Melisa has held senior roles at companies like Lam Research, Applied Materials, and Coherent, where she led large-scale Lean transformations and helped drive cultural change across global operations. With a PhD in nuclear engineering and plasma physics, Melisa brings a rare combination of technical depth and people-centered leadership to her work. In this episode, we explore Melisa's Lean journey — from her early days in Six Sigma to becoming a global Lean leader at Coherent. She shares how her perspective shifted from project-based improvement to empowering teams with daily problem-solving skills. Melisa discusses the critical role of psychological safety in building a continuous improvement culture, and how giving people "permission to improve" must be backed by leadership behavior and support. We also touch on the challenges of applying Lean principles in complex, low-volume/high-mix manufacturing environments and why principles still matter more than tools. We also discuss Melisa's book Problem Solving for New Engineers, written to bridge the gap between academic preparation and the real-world challenges engineers face in industry. She previews her upcoming book, Faceplant: Free Yourself from Failure's Funk, which tackles the emotional side of failure and how we can grow through it. Whether you're a Lean leader, a coach, or an engineer just starting out, this episode is packed with valuable insights on leadership, learning, and making improvement accessible for everyone. Questions, Notes, and Highlights: How did you first get involved with Lean or Six Sigma? Which books influenced you early in your Lean journey? How did your company shift from project-based Six Sigma to a Lean culture? Where did the push for culture change come from—top-down or grassroots? What role did you play in leading Lean at Coherent? What does it mean to “give people permission to improve,” and why is that necessary? How do leaders create psychological safety to support continuous improvement? How did your background in nuclear engineering and plasma physics lead to a career in semiconductors and lasers? How do Lean principles apply in low-volume, high-mix environments? What inspired you to write Problem Solving for New Engineers? How does the book help bridge the gap between university labs and industry problem solving? Why is experimentation and scientific thinking often missing in workplace culture? How do you explain the value of iterative cycles like PDSA to new engineers? What is design of experiments (DOE), and how does it improve problem solving? When is it helpful to let people run experiments with predictable outcomes? How did your second book, Faceplant: Free Yourself from Failure's Funk, come about? Why do people fear failure in personal life but accept it in professional settings? How can we reframe failure as a learning opportunity rather than something to avoid? How do you personally deal with failure and setbacks, like learning a foreign language? In this episode of Software People Stories, Gayatri Kalyanaraman speaks with Anu Dwaraknath, Staff Technical Program Manager at Lam Research, about her dynamic journey across geographies, domains, and roles. From her early days in telecom to becoming a driving force in the semiconductor space, Anu shares stories of adaptability, continuous learning, and purpose-driven leadership. Episode Summary In this inspiring episode of Software People Stories, Gayatri Kalyanaraman is in conversation with Anu Dwaraknath, Staff Technical Program Manager at Lam Research — a global leader in semiconductor capital equipment.Anu walks us through her transformative journey from a telecom software engineer to a program leader in the high-stakes world of semiconductors. With warmth and clarity, she shares how each stage of her career was shaped by curiosity, grit, and a willingness to embrace new challenges.Having started in C/C++ development at Alcatel-Lucent, Anu transitioned into technical program management after earning a general management MBA in the U.S. — a shift she undertook during the 2008 recession. With no prior semiconductor experience, she joined Lam Research as an intern and steadily built her domain knowledge, moving from internal IT to core product engineering over the next decade. Now based in India, Anu leads software initiatives on tools that power the chips behind every smart device — and actively advocates for greater awareness and participation in the semiconductor industry, especially for women in tech. Key Themes & Highlights Breaking Into Semiconductors with Persistence and CuriosityJoined Lam Research during her MBA through an internship focused on business analysis.Despite being new to the domain, she took on enterprise software migrations, bridging the business and engineering teams.Faced challenges around visa sponsorship and recession-era job market, but leveraged every opportunity to gain cross-functional exposure. Learning the Domain, One Layer at a TimeStarted in IT and internal systems, then gradually moved into product-facing roles within Lam.Through subconscious learning from team meetings, leadership messages, and everyday exposure, she began to understand the complex world of semiconductor fabrication and capital equipment.Upon relocating to India, she took on a more core product role — bringing her closer to engineers and customers, leading to rapid upskilling in domain knowledge.“I knew I was coming in from a non-product background, and I said yes — I'm ready for the steep learning curve.”️ Building the Beginner's MindsetEmphasizes the importance of staying mentally agile and open to new domains.Used every role — from unpaid internships to technical program ownership — as a learning opportunity.Believes you don't need to know everything on Day 1, but must carry the intent to learn continuously. Growing Semiconductor Awareness in IndiaEngages actively with communities like Grace Hopper (GHCI), Lean In, and PMI, often being the only semiconductor representative in the room.Speaks at schools and conferences to demystify what semiconductors are, how fabs work, and why this field matters — especially post-COVID and in India's Make in India drive.Helps others through referrals, career guidance, and mentorship — especially women interested in STEM and product roles Quote-worthy Moments“Your domain doesn't have to define you — if you carry the mindset to learn, the journey takes care of itself.”“I wanted to break out of my comfort zone — not just from engineering to management, but from one industry to another.”“Being in semiconductors now feels like representing a movement — and I take that responsibility seriously.”Anu can be reached at https://www.linkedin.com/in/anu-dwarakanath-89728a15/Anu is Process innovator, critical thinker, and a corporate entrepreneur in the making!

CancerNetwork, in a partnership with KidneyCAN, spoke with 2 genitourinary oncologists, Elizabeth P. Henske, MD, and Jason Muhitch, PhD, about how advocacy and funding through interdisciplinary collaboration between patient advocates, researchers, and physicians have resulted in numerous clinical breakthroughs in kidney cancer.  Henske is a professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School, an associate member of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, director of the Center for LAM Research and Clinical Care, and a physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Muhitch is an associate professor of Oncology, co-chair of the Genitourinary Translational Research Group, deputy director of Graduate Studies, and a member of the Department of Immunology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. First, the state of kidney cancer advocacy was discussed, with Muhitch emphasizing multidisciplinary collaboration and the role of conferences, such as the Kidney Cancer Research Summit (KCRS) and the International Kidney Cancer Symposium, in bringing these groups together. Henske emphasized the strength of the advocacy network for kidney cancer, particularly as a mechanism for exchanging information, offering patient support and education, and facilitating research. Next, funding was touched upon, with Henske expressing her interest in conveying the importance and urgency of kidney cancer research to Congress. Muhitch agreed, suggesting that the meetings with congressional offices offer opportunities to explain how funding can impact kidney cancer outcomes and scientist training, as well as the strength of patient advocacy in influencing Congress. Muhitch and Henske then discussed the Kidney Cancer Research Program, which has enabled significant increases in funding for kidney cancer research, helped to facilitate clinical breakthroughs for common kidney cancer types, and set a foundation for exploring different kidney cancer variants. The discussion then turned to encouraging research for renal cell carcinoma , which Muhitch expressed can be attributed to partnership award recipients who went on to conduct research evaluating biomarkers predictive of patient responses to immunotherapies.  Regarding additional funding mechanisms, Henske and Muhitch discussed numerous private foundations providing smaller research grants. Henske explained that these smaller grants are instrumental in taking the first steps to explore rarer kidney cancer subtypes, with Muhitch explaining that the earlier funding can formulate research that leads to greater funding from the Kidney Cancer Research Program. KidneyCAN is a nonprofit organization with a mission to accelerate cures for kidney cancer through education, advocacy, and research funding. Learn more about KidneyCAN's mission and work here.
