John welcomes back Christina Hodson (The Flash, Bumblebee) to ask, how do you to construct a great action sequence? Using examples from three different movies, they discuss what good action looks like on the page, how to keep your reader from getting bored or confused, and why production can sometimes blow your plans to smithereens. Then it's a round of How Would This be a Movie?, where we take four stories from the news and pitch how we might adapt them for the screen. Stories include a mysterious painting, a train trapped in a blizzard, a teen who sued his parents, and zombie colleges. We also follow up on director's chairs and mammograms, and answer listener questions on side characters and creating a healthy work/life balance. In our bonus segment for premium members, John and Christina examine the do's and don'ts of introducing yourself to a stranger through email. A double episode: First, our experts weigh in on Jaguar's new marketing stunt and concept. And second, Jason drives a prototype Lucid Gravity, the all-new SUV. === The Carmudgeon Show Sponsor, Vredestein Tires: https://www.vredestein.com/ Click here to join the Hagerty Driver's Club: https://bit.ly/Join-HDC-Cammisa-Rev === This was a big week for Jaguar, with a controversial ad that got lots of attention, and a wild concept that previews its new 4-door electric GT. Jason feels it's important to remember that the ad served one purpose: to get attention on an automaker we called Dead Brand Walking. And it very much worked. Jason's Van, Jynah, survived a 1500-mile round-trip to Salt Lake City, joining the mile-high club several times along the way. Thankfully, Vredestein Tires shipped a brand new set of Wintrac Pro winter tires just in time for alpine blizzards, because the Van, Jynah, had to make it across a mountain chain in the snow. Including climbing the famed Donner Pass — with chains. Afterwards, Jason gets behind the wheel of Lucid's latest creation – and second ever model – the new 2025 Lucid Gravity SUV. The boys discuss its unrelenting commitment to efficiency across the board: from its range, to interior and cargo space, and even mounting fuse blocks inside of chassis bracing on the Air sedan. Jason admits to taking an engineering mule for a brief spin and recounts its handling dynamics. Later, while smooshing his face onto a pane of glass at Lucid HQ, Jason spoke with CEO, Peter Rawlinson. Peter personally engineered the ingenious rear hatch seal, and also showed off the new frunk seat with fold-out mud guard. Then the boys lament the post-fact and internet-troll era which we, unfortunately, continue to live in. Derek defends his honor and encyclopedic knowledge from a viewer who claims the Mercedes CLK DTM had the first AMG engine – not the CLK63 Black Series. Too bad the viewer is incorrect (the CLK DTM used a derivative of the regular production M113; the Black Series used AMG's own M156. And Jason fights off M fans who argue they can “code out” the G80 M3's faults. Afterwards, they discuss the state of automotive marketing. First by reminiscing about automotive ads from 20 years ago with staying power, and then by debating whether or not Jaguar's latest rebranding and ad campaign was a success. Does Jaguar's last-ditch effort to save the marque stand a chance at actually swaying consumers? Or is it still a Dead Brand Walking? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Cannibalism: Most have heard the story immortalized in the book with the very misleading title, “Miracle In The Andes” When the plane called “Fairchild” made contact with the Andes mountains and crashed. Along with the Old Christian Rugby Club heading to an exhibition match against a Chilean team. After much suffering, they turned to eating the dead bodies for survival; methodically cannibalizing their friends, even to the point of discovering the most delicate meats. All in an attempt to survive one more day in the wretched, freezing conditions they found themselves in. Even justifying their actions by comparing the act to be much like the Lord's Supper. And telling themselves that they drew life from the blood of their friends, in the same way we draw spiritual life through the Lord's Supper. #Cannibalism Also, most have heard of the cannibalistic “Donner - Reed Party.” Or, as I jokingly call it out of disgust and horror, the “Donner Dinner Party.” In 1846, as they travelled across the United States to start a new life, they took a supposed shortcut enroot to California from Illinois. They became trapped in the Sierra Nevada Mountains by an 8 day freak snowstorm. To this day, the location is called the “Donner Pass”. The gruesome reminder of how when the food ran out, and they ate their oxen, dogs, and cow hides; they then took to eating one another's relatives and accountancies. If you fell in the snow, you might become dinner. We find similar stories of desperation, depravity, and cannibalism in the Bible. Like the following story, found in 2 Kings 6:24-30 :“Later King Benhadad of Aram assembled his whole army. They went to Samaria and blockaded it. (25) The shortages caused by the blockade of Samaria became so severe that a donkey's head sold for two pounds of silver and a half-pint of dove manure for two ounces of silver. (26) As the king of Israel was walking on the city wall, a woman cried to him, "Help me, Your Majesty!" (27) He answered, "If the LORD doesn't help you, how can I help you? I can't give you something from the threshing floor or the winepress." (28) Then the king asked her, "What's the matter?" She answered, "This woman told me, 'Give up your son. Let's eat him today. We'll eat my son tomorrow.' (29) So we boiled my son and ate him. The next day I told her, 'Give up your son. We'll eat him,' but she hid her son." (30) When the king heard the woman say this, he tore his clothes in distress. As he was walking on the city wall, the people saw that he was wearing sackcloth under his clothes. (31) He said, "May God strike me dead if the head of Elisha, son of Shaphat, stays on his body today.”We have heard of the infamous cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer, the serial killer who ate his victims, and many other such horrendous and disgusting stories of cannibalism. The rest of the Bible is no different in the accounts provided. This is what we will be talking about today- Cannibalism from a Biblical point of view. So, hold onto your taste buds, and wet your appetites for the meat of the Word of God. I promise we will season it with salt. ;-)Download The PDFhttps://brotherlance.com/cannibalism/Watch The Video:New IntroSupport the showBecome A SupporterJOIN US!> Main Website: https://brotherlance.com/> Free Book: http://weshallbelikehim.com/> Free Music: https://brotherlance.com/brother-lance-music/> Social - Gab: https://gab.com/BrotherLance

Electric Semi Makers Are Wacky. Recently a man on YouTube showed a video of a Tesla Semi Truck. He showed how the Tesla was beating diesel trucks up Donner Pass. Boy oh boy, the Tesla sure flew up that hill. I was amazed, for a short time. Then I remembered something. I had seen this before. I've seen this exact phenom before. Let me see, oh yeah, I remember driving an empty trailer up Sand Stone Mountain. I remember blowing by all the loaded down rigs. Yeah yeah, that's right. See this joker that ran the video, never mentioned how heavy the Tesla was verses the diesel rigs. I bet if we could have weighed them all, the Tesla might come up short. Next time "cyberguy", maybe you can get your facts straight and your information clear. What comes to mind hearing the word HYPNOTHERAPY? Moreover, what do you envision hearing PAST LIFE REGRESSION HYPNOTHERAPY? One aspect of this holistic treatment is that it might be far out there to some.. however it links to Price Pritchett, also a psychologist" "You Are the SOLUTION TO YOUR FUTURE". (Price Pritchett) My feelings on this process is that people are hurting in an extraordinary manner, meaning it's time to take extraordinary measures to help people. I am a firm believer that our society would greatly benefit from embracing the practices and treatments that are offered through past life regression, Reiki, Healing Crystals Elizabeth Lockhart provides several remedies that are a must. Many of these can be performed VIRTUALLY. One point that I want to make about KARMA.. Elizabeth enlightened me that most of us have a misconception of KARMA thinking that it is a “ payback” action for wrong deeds. Elizabeth said KARMA does not provide a payback at all for wrong deeds. Instead it is a path that helps people do right.. this is layman's terms, Elizabeth, forgive me if I oversimplified. It creates an open mind to the next amazing path in finding your purpose in life** Elizabeth Lockhart has studied with the Michael Newton Institute for eons… and she is qualified with the mental health counseling arena with an MS degree specifically. Additionally, her professional certifications are impressive which you can find on her website www.mariposahypnotherapy.com What impressed me when I first met and spoke with Elizabeth is her gentleness, a compassionate ear. She has embarked on this path of Holistic Healing - honestly our world needs this, but the larger reason is that she was guided to provide “alternative healing to addictions, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual well being and wholeness.” Studying with the Michael Newton Institute provides her with fine tuning her holistic treatments https://youtu.be/4LvHploic1Q?si=OijL0DJGeHPz9N4r “We begin with a past life regression to establish comfort and trust, and as a “jumping off” point into one's existence as a soul in the soul realm. Life Between Lives ® spiritual regression hypnotherapy. “ The Institute is focused on fine tuning its presence in the world right now, educationally and otherwise. Michael Newton wrote Journey of Souls, Destiny of Souls, Life Between Lives Spiritual Regression Hypnotherapy, and other books that were edited and published by the Michael Newton Institute, such as Wisdom of Souls, another great read. This work is intended to help people realize experientially that they are much more than their bodies, minds and emotions- more than their egos- we are all souls in a body on this journey called "Life!" These efforts hold hopes that this will bring more peace, unconditional love, purpose and meaning to our existences here on Earth. 1/8: The Earth Transformed: An Untold History by Peter Frankopan (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Earth-Transformed-Untold-History/dp/0525659161/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Global warming is one of the greatest dangers mankind faces today. Even as temperatures increase, sea levels rise, and natural disasters escalate, our current environmental crisis feels difficult to predict and understand. But climate change and its effects on us are not new. In a bold narrative that spans centuries and continents, Peter Frankopan argues that nature has always played a fundamental role in the writing of history. From the fall of the Moche civilization in South America that came about because of the cyclical pressures of El Niño to volcanic eruptions in Iceland that affected Egypt and helped bring the Ottoman empire to its knees, climate change and its influences have always been with us. 1866 Donner Pass

Kevin and Tony open with an intense discussion of the bus pass (good) versus the Donner Pass (less good unless traversed using a bus pass).
In this heavy hearted episode we discuss stories. movies, and legends of cannibals. We dive into the cannibalistic crimes of serial killers such as Albert Fish, Jeffrey Dahmer, and the infamous Sawney Bean Clan of Scotland. We discuss the story of the man who shared his limb with others and other tragedies like Donner Pass. We also discuss our favorite and most hated cannibal films of all time.

This is a story about several families banding together in the Midwest, headed to California in a wagon train. The year was 1846, about 60 years before Henry Ford massed produced the Ford Model A car. In the 1840s, if you wanted to travel, you had to use wagons pulled by horses, or oxen.
The American Old West is a story of excitement and adventure when portrayed by Hollywood actors like John Wayne and the like. But on the ground, it was anything but. War, famine, bloodshed, and in the case of the Donner Party: cannibalism. Listen in for stories of one of the worst disasters among pioneers of the Old West as we look into what happened and what - or who - still haunts Donner Pass. Have a suggestion? I had the pleasure of speaking with the multi-talented Rich McCulley recently. I met Rich several years ago at a music venue, with other musicians – shout out to Ted Russell Kamp, Will Kimbrough and Joey Peters. Rich currently lives in El Paso, Texas, in an neighborhood near where I lived when I lived there. Small world! And in another weird small world, we were neighbors in Southern California. Missed doing the Starbucks thing when he drove through. Rich has played with almost everyone. He is a singer, songwriter, wrote the Donner Pass soundtrack, has had music placed in baseball games, among other things. He can be reached at Redhill Studios, or google him. His website is: https://richmcculley.bandcamp.com/ The newest CD – Stash, Walk the Walk, with Ted Russell Kamp and Joey Peters is available on all platforms. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/michelemarotta/support
“Snowbound” was not a term Stephen Kulieke thought he would hear at the end of California's driest year in a century, but that's precisely the position the Sierra City resident found himself in this week. “It's snowmaggedon,” said Kulieke, 71, whose mountain cabin was buried under at least 4 feet of powder Monday amid record-breaking snowfall in the Sierra Nevada. “It's just beyond belief how much snow there is.” Officials at the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab at Donner Pass said the area's snowfall totals have surpassed the previous December record of 179 inches set in 1970. By Tuesday morning, the lab had received a whopping 202.1 inches of snow, making it the third-snowiest month on record. The snow comes as a much-needed surprise for the bone-dry West, where only months ago, officials put residents under a state of drought emergency amid increasingly dry conditions. During the long, hot summer, rivers and reservoirs dried up, and once-green fields sat fallow and turned to dust. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Imagine if you were stranded in the mountains over an entire winter. People all around you are dying of starvation and exposure. How desperate would you have to be to eat the remains of your loved ones? The Donner Party, was a group of American pioneers who migrated to California in a wagon train from the Midwest. Delayed by a multitude of mishaps, they spent the winter of 1846–1847 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Some of the migrants resorted to cannibalism to survive, eating the bodies of those who had succumbed to starvation, sickness, and extreme cold. Cheryl will tell you about how the party was trapped by exceptionally heavy snow in the Sierra Nevada, and, when food ran out, some members of the group reportedly resorted to cannibalism of those already dead. It was the worst disaster of the overland migration to California. Donner Lake and Donner Pass, California, are named for the party. Rob follows with equally outlandish tales of people who didn't listen to right advice or made very bad decisions along the way. By doing so they earned themselves a Darwin award
This Spooky Wednesday the world is on fire, and it may or may not be reflected in our podcast. We head out to California this week for both of our locations. Kala tells us about her own experiences taking The Donner Pass in Northern California. The story of the Donner Party is tragic, and it's easy to see how this area is now haunted by the people who met their tragic end here. Travel + short cuts = cannibalism? Brittany takes us down to Southern California to talk about the Whaley House in San Diego. How is it that a house can have ghosts before it is ever built? Brittany knows. Construction + men who were hung for attempted boat theft = haunting? This episode is sure to have you questioning the decision-making skills of many people in the 1800s. No wonder so many ghosts are from this time. This episode is sponsored by Earth Rider Brewery in Superior, WI. For more information visit https://earthrider.beer
It's true story week on the podcast. First we examine a gangster from the 1930s, then some settlers dealing with cannibalism and finally a hunt for a u-boat.

The summer that I turned 19 I did a solo road trip from California to Idaho to Montana and then back home again. At some point on that trip for some, unknown reason, I found myself in the admissions office of Montana State University. I got talked into filling out an application to attend college there and paid the $30 fee to apply. By the time I got home to my parent's house my mother was already holding an envelope with the Montana State University emblem where the return address goes. She had a concerned look on her face, and she asked me what this was all about. We opened the envelope together, and the letter said something to the effect of, "welcome to Montana State University". This was back in the days when many of our land grant universities had plenty of space in classrooms and empty dorm rooms when the semesters began. So, they were eager to accept students. They must have accepted me and sent that letter the day that I filled it out! My mother and I went completely different directions emotionally after we read that letter. She went down the road of her son's transfer from Modesto Junior College to a four year university somewhere far away coming way too soon. I went down the road of excitement and elation, dreaming of cattle ranches, mountains and big winter snows. Many discussions were had about out of state tuition, the dangers of winter travel and independence. I was already registered and paid up at Modesto Junior College for my third semester of post-high school education. I had lived in the Central Valley of California my entire life. Including trips to a cabin in the Sierra Nevadas, I could still count the number of times I had actually seen it snow in my life on both hands. I had always wanted to live somewhere with a real winter, with snow piling up and temperatures going down. Now, it was going to happen. I wasn't just going to go to college. I wasn't just going to move out of my parent's home for the first time. I was going to find adventure. I started my education at Montana State University in Winter Semester of 1993. The semester began in January, and the entire West had quite a winter that year. For me to get to Montana I had to get over the Donner Pass on Interstate 80 between Sacramento and Reno. That pass was being closed so often than winter that I actually ended up leaving for college about five days early during a break between storms when the pass was open. After a few days staying with friends in Boise, Idaho I headed out for Bozeman the day after a rare blizzard in Boise. I was now in a real winter, and that day driving from Idaho to Montana showed me that almost immediately. I hit ice and slid into the median of Interstate 84 near Glenns Ferry, Idaho that morning. Luckily, I was able to spin my way out in my little, two wheel drive Nissan pickup, but I could only get out into the westbound lanes. So, I had to back track to Hammett, Idaho, exit and get back in the eastbound lanes. I proceeded east again...only slower. Somewhere between Rupert, Idaho and American Falls I found myself being the first vehicle to reach a jackknifed semi that was blocking both lanes of traffic. I had never experienced anything like an interstate being blocked before and just waited there patiently for the big wreckers to get him back on the road. I was nervous but exuberant at all of the snow around me. An hour or so later, now heading north on Interstate 15 almost to Idaho Falls, I started seeing signs that the interstate was closed 50 miles ahead. I could not believe that they would purposefully close an interstate and convinced myself that I must not understand what I was reading. So, I did not exit. I proceeded with my original plan. After I passed the final exit for Idaho Falls the interstate changed from pavement with patches of snow to being completely snow packed. I for some reason thought this made the driving conditions safer and increased my sp...

Wrapping up our Horror Musicals month, we decided to go with the Trey Parker college project CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL, and it was as big of a mistake as trying to cross Donner Pass in the middle of winter. Brian got hungry and Scott got eaten first because he's the gym rat of the show (which isn't saying much), but at least the meat was organic. At this point, there aren't any details on how his DC Comics gunslinger will fit into the epic five-hour event, which includes Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman. https://ew.com/tv/2019/09/06/jonah-hex-arrowverses-crisis-on-infinite-earths-crossover/ Crisis on Infinite Earths Recruits The Flash's John Wesley Shipp (Date: 10 September 2019) Shipp has a role to play in this year's five-show Arrowverse crossover. However, there's no word yet on which role he will reprise for the event. Throughout his Arrowverse tenure, Shipp has played three separate characters: Henry Allen, Jay Garrick and the Barry Allen of Earth-90. Henry died in Season 2, so it likely won't be this character. In Season 4, Jay announced his plan to train a new Flash for Earth-3, after which he would retire from the superhero life. As such, it's possible for Jay to return with his new trainee in tow. https://www.cbr.com/crisis-on-infinite-earths-john-wesley-shipp/ Arrow Favorite Willa Holland to Return and Recur During Final Season (Date: 18 September 2019) The character that Arrow fans most hoped would put in an appearance during the final season — Oliver's sister, played by former series regular Willa Holland — will indeed be seen again, TVLine has learned. But wait, there's more: Holland is confirmed to not just guest-star but recur during the CW series' 10-episode farewell run. https://tvline.com/2019/09/18/arrow-willa-holland-returns-final-season-thea/?fbclid=IwAR2QJpp7uXz2vRsOUdHF_N5taCD1RgObN1ruQNVfYV92BPKnP-ZzIbPunr8 Tom Welling To Reprise ‘Smallville' Clark Kent Role In Arrowverse Crossover On the CW (Date: 19 Sept 2019) And then there were three. Although it's a bucolic setting camping next to a river, Molly & Ethan pay the price when they wake up this morning as all of their gear is wet with condensation. An annoying start to the day, as they head towards Donner Pass with two big climbs to conquer; Squaw Valley and then the colourfully named Tinker Knob. Ethan regrets not stretching this morning, as they head uphill and the snow appears again. The ski runs and infrastructure they walk past looks nonsensical in the summer-like conditions, but there is enough snow that a few skiers have hiked up to get some runs in. They bump into Sugar Glider, who had all his food stolen from his tent by a bear when he camped near Echo Lake! Across a river crossing and more snow their Sierra experience has really hardened them to the conditions. Ethan is europhic at the top of the climb to Tinker Knob, having an epiphany moment in realising how strong and fit he has become, and how the trail has crystallised ideas and plans he has for the future. They walk high along the ridgeline towards Donner Pass and the ski ranch there, where they get a free 42oz beer, and stop for burgers, music, and chat with their fellow hikers. Afterwards they move down the trail near to the road where they camp in preparation for hitching into Truckee tomorrow for a 5 day resupply that will take them onwards to Quincy. Enjoy the journey in Episode 87 of Trail & Errors.
Waking up to yet another beautiful sunny day the guys are hoping for less snow, a less obscured route, and more miles today. They heard what sounded like an impressive fireworks display over Lake Tahoe during the night, and this morning the PCT shows its friendly side with a pleasant clear trail. They consider the miles left to Canada, and the time they have left on their visa, and some mental maths reveals that they need to get to 20+ miles per day from now on. The snow continues to be an issue as they progress towards Granite Chief Wilderness, though they hear that after Sierra City (80 miles away) the PCT is clear. A picnic table lunch is a nice change from sitting in the dirt (or snow!), and they have great views over Lake Tahoe before heading back into a perfumed forest. Glissading down a couple of snowy sections, they push on past 20 miles for the day, though Molly takes a tumble off the trail :( . Eventually camping by a large river, they think about reaching Donner Pass tomorrow and getting some hot food and a free beer at the Ski Ranch there. A satisfying day with good miles made in Episode 86 of Tail & Errors :)

Neron lures the Legends to the Donner Pass during the Ice Age and traps them in an avalanche that they caused. He travels through time with Constantine to visit Johnny’s ancestor and teach an old dog some new tricks. Meanwhile, Gary slowly hypnotizes all the agents at the Time Bureau with his nipple. Contact Information If you want to join in the discussion, you can submit feedback via email to tomorowslegends@gmail.com. Please submit all feedback by 7:00 pm eastern on Wednesdays following the show. You can also join the Facebook group at facebook.com/groups/tomorrowslegends. And you can follow us on twitter @tomorowslegends. Synopsis Neron manipulates Constantine into using his magic so he can trap the Legends on an avalanche, conveniently sidelining most of the cast. He then travels to ancient Britain to visit King Konstentyn, an ancient ancestor of John Constantine, so that John can learn how to stabilize a vortex to hell. Ultimately, Neron is still working to bring Tabitha from hell to the mortal world. Stuck in an avalanche, the remainder of our Team Legends needs to remember what it means to be a family. With Ray missing, they search his quarters for inspiration after Mick and Sarah argue over whether or not Mick should have made the call to shoot Ray. They discover Cards to Save the Timeline and Ray Palmer’s survival guide. Determined to enjoy their last moments together and find some inspiration to save themselves, they turn the Waverider to full power and decide to play Ray’s game. Fortunately for the Legends, it works, and the ice around the ship melts from the continual heat they are generating, allowing them to fly through the rest of the ice. Meanwhile at the Time Bureau, Gary is conducting performance reviews and exuding an uncharacteristic amount of confidence. Slowly but surely, each of the Time Bureau agents turn into hypnotized automatons, stating Gary Green is all the man we need. Suspicious, Mona and Nora begin to investigate, until eventually, only Mona and Wolfie are left. As Mona is called in for her performance review, she conspires with Wolfie to take Gary down and bring everyone back to their senses. In the end, Neron succeeds in forcing Johnny to strengthen his magic to save not only himself, but an innocent pooka, about to be damned to hell. He stabilizes the vortex, disarms his ancestor, and then willingly jumps into the hell vortex to rescue Ray from hell. Unfortunately, Neron is able to bring Tabitha from hell, and with a bippity boppity boo, they rescue Gary and escape with Mona. Ava returns to the Waverider to chat with the Legends while Nora pursues Neron, Tabitha, and Gary so she can rescue Mona.

Recently, in Tromsø, the Arctic capital of Norway, I came across the name Carleton Gajdusek. That name took me back many years and halfway round the globe to a village in the Fore district of Papua New Guinea. A man is standing in the doorway of his hut, clinging to the doorpost, his head nodding, before making his way unsteadily, emaciated and ataxic, to another hut. He has kuru. Dr Gajdusek was an American virologist and he spent the last years of his life in Tromsø. He won the Nobel Prize for his work on the aetiology of kuru. Traditionally, the Fore people honoured their dead by eating their flesh, the men receiving the muscles for strength, the women being left with the brain and scrag ends. The custom of eating human flesh had already died out with the missionaries, and Gajdusek hypothesized that kuru was caused by an infective agent – he called it a ‘slow virus’– with a long incubation period. He postulated that it was concentrated in the nervous system, explaining why women were more likely to develop kuru than men. He showed that chimpanzees injected with brain tissue from dead kuru sufferers developed the disease. We now know that kuru, like vCJD and some other fatal neurodegenerative conditions, is a prion disease. Cannibalism has a deep, transgressive and occasionally pathological fascination. Remember Hansel and Gretel? Cannibalism runs through Evelyn Waugh’s Black Mischief: Basil Seal sees a red beret in a cooking pot and realizes that he has just eaten his girlfriend. In 1991 The Silence of the Lambs attracted huge audiences and five Oscars. Early maps showed distant continents inhabited by monstrous beings and by cannibals. Geographical features became more accurate but the myths survived. Many of the monsters were clearly imagined. But we cannot be sure about the cannibalism. How far can early explorers’ and missionaries’ accounts be trusted? Depicting the inhabitants as savages permitted Europeans to subjugate them in the name of civilization, and to exploit their resources. Even if sometimes, as in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1609, it was the European colonists who resorted to cannibalism. Modern techniques show that post-ice-age Britons in Gough’s Cave in Cheddar Gorge butchered other humans. In the 15,000 years since then, there is uncomfortable evidence of cannibalism almost everywhere researchers look. Though it is rarely clear whether the victims were killed for their meat, or what the purpose was. To honour the dead, to intimidate or punish enemies, to celebrate victory, to stave off starvation, as a remedy or a ghoulish gourmand treat? I try to imagine what it might be like to butcher another human. Of course I have cut the flesh off a human. A living human. Making that first incision into a draped abdomen was always breaking a taboo. Once inside I just got on with the job, perhaps the same emotional shift happens to people desperate enough to cannibalise. But ‘Eating people is wrong’ as Junior declares in the Flanders and Swann song, so even those who have eaten human flesh as a last resort to survive are reluctant to admit it. In 1846 a wagon train set out from Missouri for California. Heavy snow trapped the pioneers in the Donner Pass for nearly four months till a relief party arrived. Some of the 48 survivors were unwilling to admit that they had survived by eating the flesh of their dead colleagues. We don’t know what discussions went on in the Donner Pass, but when the plane carrying a Uruguayan rugby team and their supporters crashed on a remote glacier in the Andes, the survivors agreed that should they die, their bodies should be eaten to give their companions a chance of life. Two months later, 16 people were rescued. Knowledge of the survival pact mitigated the initial horror with which the events were greeted. Still, acknowledging cannibalism would tarnish the image of true British heroes. No-one survived John Franklin’s expedition to na...

Colley Bailey was born in Mountain Home, Arkansas and grew up in the Ozarks. Rich McCulley's approach to life might well be called “the Tao of Rock.” After spending his formative years playing in bands and touring out of California's agricultural San Joaquin Valley, McCulley fell into working at a recording studio in Fresno. When he outgrew that gig, he relocated to Los Angeles and started his own recording studio, Red Hill Recording. Fast forward to 2014 and he's a successful songwriter, engineer, guitarist and producer with several albums under his belt and his commitment to not forcing things is as strong and easygoing as ever. It has worked out well for him. His songs are well-crafted and his studio and stage calendar is as busy as he wants it to be. His rolodex is full of some of Los Angeles' top musicians, and when he calls, they pick up the phone. Songs he wrote or co-wrote have been heard in TV shows like “Grey's Anatomy” and “Cold Case” and in movies like “Little Birds” and “Donner Pass.” There are hundreds of gigs on his resume, but these days he spends more of his days closer to home to have some much deserved time with his growing family. It's an enviable position to find oneself, but McCulley doesn't let it go to his head. He just keeps making great music.
