Electric Semi Makers Are Wacky. Recently a man on YouTube showed a video of a Tesla Semi Truck. He showed how the Tesla was beating diesel trucks up Donner Pass. Boy oh boy, the Tesla sure flew up that hill. I was amazed, for a short time. Then I remembered something. I had seen this before. I've seen this exact phenom before. Let me see, oh yeah, I remember driving an empty trailer up Sand Stone Mountain. I remember blowing by all the loaded down rigs. Yeah yeah, that's right. See this joker that ran the video, never mentioned how heavy the Tesla was verses the diesel rigs. I bet if we could have weighed them all, the Tesla might come up short. Next time "cyberguy", maybe you can get your facts straight and your information clear. Electric Semi Makers Are Wacky Drivewyze for IOS users, allows you to bypass weigh stations using only an ap on your phone Drivewyze for Android users National Carriers is hiring students, solos, teams and lease purchase driver Driving tests.org for solos and Driving tests.org for corporate guarantees you will pass your Class A Here Carriers Not To Work For don' t do it Truck Parking Club for Truckers that need to find rest. plus for land owners that want to participate in helping truckers find rest. Trucker Still Missing After Rollover in West Virginia All week the news has been reporting on a missing trucker, theorizing about a truck driver that crashed his truck on a mountainous road in West Virginia. Since then, Carlos M. Bonifaciomunoz, 39, had been reported as, walking away from the scene of the accident before authorities were able to get there. His family member in New Jersey has received a call from him. Bonifaciomunoz still has not been found and may be hurt. If you have seen him, please contact the local authorities. Elderly Couple Killed In Rollover In Iowa The couple survived the crash but both passed away at the hospital for an unknown reason, the tractor and trailer, seemed to drift to the right of the road. When John Kilburg, tried to correct the rig, it went left too shop and rolled. Both he and his wife Donelle Kilburg, had to be extracted from the truck. They both died at the hospital. Prayers for their family.

The Automotive Troublemaker w/ Paul J Daly and Kyle Mountsier
We're flying into this Thursday as we review the challenging effects the UAW strike is having on parts suppliers. We also review a new study about public trust in autonomy, as well as a new record set by a Tesla Semi Truck.Due to the ongoing UAW strike against Detroit 3, nearly 30% of suppliers have initiated layoffs, with this number expected to surpass 60% by mid-October, reveals a MEMA (Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association) survey. The strike that started on September 15, has significantly impacted the auto supply chain, amplifying financial pressures from the pandemic and material shortages.More than 50% of idled suppliers anticipate needing at least a week to return to pre-strike production levels.MEMA has requested the White House to speed up commercial vehicle crossings at the U.S.-Mexico border due to added security checks slowing down transport from suppliers that are outside the USTo this point, the UAW and OEM's haven't been feeling much financial pain. During the 2019 strike, GM lost an estimated $1 billion over the first two weeks, whereas the losses in the first two weeks of the current strike amounted to about $200 million.Public trust in self-driving cars is waning, as shown by a study from J.D. Power and MIT, with distrust growing due to perceived deceptive marketing practices and frequent robotaxi crashes. The 2023 Mobility Confidence Index Study indicates a declining trust in AVs over the past years, currently at 37 out of 100.First-time robotaxi riders tend to have positive views on AVs, but negative media coverage of deployment issues counters this sentiment.Autonomous vehicle crashes, some fatal, are prompting greater attention from legislators and regulatory agencies.Misleading naming conventions, such as Tesla's "Autopilot" and "Full Self-Driving," cause confusion, with 22% of study participants erroneously believing Tesla cars can operate fully autonomously.Tesla' EV Semi truck clocked over 1,000 miles in a single day, 24-hour real-world test, challenging skeptics and outdoing competitors in the NACFE's Run on Less program.Tesla's achievement challenges Bill Gates' previous statements, doubting the viability of electric semi-trucks for long-haul distances, saying they would “probably never” work because of battery weightJust last month, Michael Lohscheller, Nikola Motor's new CEO, challenged skeptics by stating, "I defy anyone to find another zero-emission vehicle truck anywhere that can run up to 900 miles in a day." after one of Nikola's hydrogen fuel cell trucks traveled 900 miles in a single day.NACFE, which has been monitoring several electric trucks under real-world conditions, will soon release comprehensive insights from its 18-day study.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email ASOTU Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/automotivestateoftheunion

Ali Javidan built race cars, the Model S prototype, and a new solution for trucking. Ali is the founder and CEO of Range Energy, which has created a bolt-on hybrid system for semi-truck trailers. This is a way to add electrification to the trucking industry without going full Tesla. He is also the former head of prototyping at Tesla. The first Model S? He built it. He explains how that prototype came to be; why Tesla won the charging wars (and who is to blame); why it's stupid to steal cable; and most importantly, his new company's big idea to improve trucking fuel economy by up to 40% without going EV. (Ali has also built some amazing cars for himself, including a badass 2002 and blisteringly-quick Mk1 Ford Escort) https://range.energy/ Recorded May 1, 202 Use Off The Record! and ALWAYS fight your tickets! Welche Erwartungen? NEW LOTUS TYPE 132 SUV PREVIEWED IN OFFICIAL IMAGE - Lotus has given a first look at its maiden SUV, which is codenamed the Type 132 and due to be revealed in full next year. - As first reported by Autocar, the Type 132 has been in development since 2016 and is set to launch with two four-wheel-drive variants, offering between 600bhp and 750bhp. It will be able to accommodate batteries ranging from 92-120kWh in capacity and will offer 800V charging. - The Norfolk firm has released the first in a series of official videos that will build up to the launch of the new Aston Martin DBX rival, which will be a key element of its bold growth strategy under the ownership of Chinese car giant Geely. - The Type 132 will be built at a new £900 million manufacturing facility in Wuhan, China, and will be one of two Chinese-built EVs the firm will launch in the next five years. Original Source : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-lotus-type-132-suv-previewed-official-image SAMSUNG SDI AND SK ON TO COMPETE WITH CHINESE MAKERS WITH PRISMATIC BATTERIES - Korea's three major battery makers, which have announced massive investment plans for the United States, are shifting their focus to Europe. They are looking to secure an edge with next-generation batteries in a price war with Chinese battery companies. - The key is competition with Chinese battery companies. China's CATL, the world's largest battery company, is building a battery plant in Germany for commercial operation from 2022. CATL produces prismatic batteries and is expected to focus on expanding orders from Volkswagen. In March, Volkswagen announced that it would increase the proportion of prismatic batteries to 80 percent by 2030. - Samsung SDI and CATL will compete fiercely in the prismatic battery sector. Samsung SDI is betting on Gen. 5, a next-generation prismatic battery to be used for BMW electric vehicles. - Major European automakers such as Daimler, BMW and Volkswagen are placing battery orders worth tens of trillion won to secure batteries for their vehicles to be launched after 2024. Original Source : http://www.businesskorea.co.kr/news/articleView.html BMW I7 REPORTEDLY GETTING THREE ELECTRIC MOTORS SHARED WITH I5 M - It was back in March last year when BMW originally announced there would be a fully electric version of the next-generation 7 Series. - CEO Oliver Zipse revealed during the Annual Accounts Press Conference 2020 the variant without a combustion engine would be the most potent. - Likely to be called i7, the 7 Series sans gasoline/diesel engine is said to have three electric motors in its highest specification. According to Auto Motor und Sport, two of them will be mounted at the back and the third one will be positioned on the front axle. The report mentions the e-motor driving the front wheels will have less power. - the same three-motor setup could be installed in a full-fat M version of the next 5 Series in EV form (i5) with a yet-to-be-confirmed total output of 750 horsepower. - It won't ride on a dedicated electric car platform as it will share its underpinnings and most of the design as well as shape with the combustion-engined models. For a bespoke EV from Bavaria, 2025 will be the year when the Neue Klasse architecture will debut. Thanks to an outstanding, two-part presentation and teardown conducted by Ingineerix, we can take an in-depth look at this new solution, hinted at in early 2021 by Elon Musk and shown only briefly at the delivery event. - previously Tesla was using in the Model S/Model X a 12 V, 33 Ah lead-acid AGM battery. It stores about 0.4 kWh of energy, but weight is quite substantial: 27 lbs (12 kg). According to Ingineerix, such batteries last in Teslas about 2-4 years, which is pretty low and sometimes causes unexpected problems if the car stops working. - The new,lithium-ion battery is much smaller and much lighter (only about 4 lbs / 1.8 kg). That's because it's much higher energy density, but also has a lower energy content. We assume that with a more reliable and "smart" solution, there is no need for 0.4 kWh. The battery has only a 0.1 kWh of energy (99 Wh to be precise) and a capacity of 6.9 Ah, according to the description. - the new battery consists of a BMS circuit board made by CATL and four prismatic NMC lithium-ion battery cells (6.9 Ah each), connected in series. During an interview on “Squawk on the Street,” CNBC's Jim Cramer asked about PepsiCo's plans to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. - “Transportation is about 10% of our overall gas emissions so it's important and we're working on different solutions. We replace our fleet regularly, every ten years more or less...and we're already starting to buy electric trucks actually from Tesla. I mean I don't want to promote anybody but that's the brand we're using so far and we're getting our first deliveries this Q4.” - The comments come almost four years after PepsiCo first announced it would purchase 100 Tesla Semi trucks. It was the largest known pre-order of the vehicle at the time. - On the company's Q2 earnings call in July, Tesla said it was pushing the Semi program to 2022 due to supply chain challenges and the limited availability of battery cells. GM were ready to pull the trigger, and Rivian was ready to take the money. WSJ reports that Rivian's leaders were skeptical of GM - in April of 2019, Ford announced it would be investing $500 million in Rivian. Since then, Ford's investments have reached $1.2 billion. Tesla chief Elon Musk tweeted that supply constraints related to battery cells are making it difficult to scale up production of its long-delayed Tesla Semi electric commercial truck. When Musk unveiled the prototype of the futuristic, battery-powered Semi in 2017, he said the Class 8 truck would go into production by 2019. That timeline was later pushed to 2021... however now Musk suggests that the bottlenecks would cause the mass production to be delayed until 2022. Meanwhile, major companies like Pepsi & Walmart have already set their preorders. Will they turn to another EV semi truck? On this episode, we're joined by Warren Redlich to discuss it's delay and how the Tesla Semi will disrupt the entire trucking industry.Guest: Warren RedlichWarren Redlich Youtube Channel ➜ http://bit.ly/WarrenRedlichBookkeeping For Your Small Business ➜ https://bench.grsm.io/paulbarron8134#Tesla #EV #TeslaSemi~Tesla Semi Truck Delayed | w/ Warren Redlich~⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺⎺Subscribe on YouTube ✅ https://bit.ly/PBNYoutubeSubscribeFacebook

I moved to Octopus recently and had been putting it off for ages, but I kicked myself for not doing it sooner, as it’s literally a 5 minute job to give them your details. Click here: https://share.octopus.energy/free-puma-452 On today’s podcast: GMC’s Hummer EV Being Engineered As A Dedicated Electric Vehicle Volvo Battery Electric Trucks For U.S. UK Goes Green Numberplates Why XPeng Stock Skyrocketed Groupe PSA To Launch More EV Vans Lunaz to begin production of electric classic Range Rovers More PHEV's from Volvo and Audi HEVO Wireless Charging Show #944 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 8th December. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. GMC HUMMER DEVELOPED IN IT'S OWN BUBBLE The pandemic may have introduced us the concept of only mixing with people in your own bubble - or is that just a UK thing? - but now GM and the GMC Hummer are chanelling that spirit. They've confirmed the Hummer EV is being developed without regard for what else is on the market. But is that a smart idea? Should GM benchmark the Hummer against it's rivals. Or should they make the truck they want to make, and not be swayed by what it will be competing with? If there's one thing the EV community loves it's benchmarking. EV drag races on Youtube went from viral sensation to cliche when it seemed the only thing reviewers wanted to do was drag race anything and everything against a Tesla. Hummer EV Vehicle Performance Engineer Todd Hubbard in an interview with Muscle Cars & Trucks: The platform is called BT1 and it's besppoke to Hummer so the engineers don't have to make this work on a platform which wasn't designed for an EV. Truck fans might recognise the T1 platform from the Chevrolet Silverado but the Hummer is unique. But remember it's only unique because it's first. GM's roster allows for economies of scale, purchasing, parts sharing and technology crossover. However I've often said the way to make a great EV is with a blank sheet of paper and not making it a compromise car. See: BMW. Or Ford F150, same truck just with batteries. GM will use the BT1 platform (and their commercial version of it, the BV1) and expand from that, making those savings whilst increasing choice of models. If they didn't it would be a financial disaster but we know that's not the case. We know from the presentations around their Ultium batteries, the plan IS a lot of parts sharing and flexibility of pack sizes. Even motors and drive units will be used from their SUVs, Crossovers and large trucks. Those vehicles, like an electric Silverado, are where they'll really hit economies of scale. GM also have a platform called BEV3 which is for things like the Cadillac Lyriq in 2021 but that's a different podcast. VOLVO BATTERY ELECTRIC TRUCKS FOR U.S. Whilst the Tesla Semi Truck sucks up all the attention in teh commercial space there's actualyl lots more going on that people realise. Volvo Trucks North America just introduced the fully electric Class 8 Volvo VNR model and production starts early next year. They will be made in Virginia on the same lines as the diesel models. Except rather than an oil burner they have a 264kWh battery, a top speed of 65mph and a range of 240km. The trucks go up to 82,000 lbs gross weight. Volvo has been testing these as part of a trial in California and say that they provide customers with a complete solution. So I'm guessing that's charging and fleet management. UK GOES GREEN NUMBERPLATES From today it's legal to have a new green numberplate here in the UK. Of course they are a legal identifier so had to go through the legislation process. From Dec 8th you can order your plates with a green rectangle on the left there the old blue Euro flag would be. At the moment it's just for those who want to show off their green credentials because the benefits aren't yet defined. Government hopes local areas will introduce incentives like free parking and bus lane use. Whilst ANPR can do a lot of the work, there are still traffic wardens who give tickets to EVs when parked in a special space because they don't know what cars are electric and which ones aren't. They CAN be retro fitted. No you can't make these yourself with green tape. By law, each number plate must display the name and postcode of the supplying outlet, the British Standard number and the trade mark of the manufacturer or component supplier. WHY XPENG STOCK SKYROCKETED Chinese Electric car maker had a stellar November with the stock price up 203.2% and 100 of their G£ Crossovers are now being shipped to Europe for the first time. They delivered 3040 vehicles in Ocotber and 4224 in November. A total of 21,341 this year. They unveiled their new autonomous driving software at the Auto expo in China on Nov 20th. A reminder XPeng are the Tesla close in a legal battle with them aas well, over a former employee who joined XPeng to work on self-driving. Tesla are saying, and this isn't legal speak, prove you didn't steal our code. XPeng saying, prove that we did. It's a common misconception Tesla open-sourced their patents so others were free to copy, in the sense of true open-source code. But instead they promised not to take action against anyone using them, in order further the field of EVs - but they do reserve the right to stop people using their IP. GROUPE PSA TO LAUNCH MORE EV VANS Following the 2020 launch of electric versions of their medium van models (D-Van) and large van (E-Van), the four brands, Peugeot, Citroën, Opel and Vauxhall will complete their line-ups in 2021 with all-electric versions of their compact van (B-Van) and associated passenger cars. Coming from eCMP platform, the powertain is composed with: A water-cooled 50kWh electric battery allowing power outputs of up to 100kW, A 100kW/136hp electric motor, An onboard charger available in two levels of power (7.4kW single-phase and 11kW three-phase) LUNAZ TO BEGIN PRODUCTION OF ELECTRIC CLASSIC RANGE ROVERS Fancy an electric Range Rover conversion? The Silvertone based company Lunaz will make 50 of the classic Rangies, from 1974 to 1994, in all electric off roaders. Prices start at £245,000 or $329,000. It's a bare metal restoration and reengineering. 4 wheels drive, new suspection and brakes, infotainment screens etc. Customer delivieres summer 2021. MORE PHEV'S FROM VOLVO AND AUDI Volvo completes electrification of XC60 range with plug in petrol. The XC60 is available with three plug-in hybrid powertrains. These combine a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that drives the front wheels and an electric motor that powers the rears, ensuring the plug-in hybrid’s exceptional efficiency is twinned with the reassurance of all-wheel drive. And an 11.6kWh battery. Presales of the A3 Sportback 45 TFSI e will start in Germany this week. The electric motor is integrated into the housing of the six-speed S tronic, which transfers the power to the front wheels. A package consisting of 96 prismatic cells in the lithium-ion battery stores 13.0 kWh of energy. HEVO WIRELESS CHARGING In early 2021, HEVO will be the first production-ready and UL-listed wireless EV charging product designed and tested to the SAE J2954 standard. The UL 2750 standard and the recently published SAE standard establish requirements for performance, safety and interoperability HEVO say "Our system is also proving to be more efficient than wired Level 2 charging, while also being the only technology equipped to serve both wired and aftermarket wireless-enabled vehicles." What’s a heavy lift drone and how can it help transport cargo or support industrial applications? For that question we head to northern California to speak with Joshua Resnick, co-founder and CEO of Parallel Flight Technologies, an industrial grade drone company with a mission to deliver unmanned systems to save lives, property and the environment. Based La Selva Beach, California, the startup company has developed patent-pending drone technology that will allow drones to carry heavy payloads for over two hours, making it ideal for use in fighting wildfires, search and rescue, healthcare and other mission-critical logistics applications. As CEO of Parallel Flight Technologies, Joshua leverages his years of composite RC airplane and helicopter experience, his background in hybrid and electric power train, as well as his love of new technologies. Prior to founding Parallel Flight, he led system architecture and electrical engineering for the Tesla Semi Truck program. He previously led state-funded research for the State of Alaska developing hybrid electric commercial fishing boats. In this edition of the Drone Radio Show, Joshua talks about Parallel Flight Technologies’ Heavy Lift Drone and how it's set to revolutionize the public safety, healthcare and industrial applications.

Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Thursday 21st June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. SECURITY AT GIGA BEEFED UP A Tesla spokesperson said: ""Yesterday afternoon, we received a phone call from a friend of Mr. Tripp telling us that Mr. Tripp would be coming to the Gigafactory to 'shoot the place up.' Police have been notified and actions are being taken to enhance security at the Gigafactory." FIA CHIEF: BUY ELECTRIC Jean Todt, head of Motorsports FIA, which governs Formula E as well as things like Formula 1: "We are trying to make electric cars more user friendly in order to encourage more people to buy electric cars, especially in cities. You know, one problem that we have with electric cars at the moment is limited autonomy. Recharging times is another as it takes quite long. On top of that, each recharge is only good for a relatively short distance. That is why we strive to give a fresh perception or feeling to consumers. When you think about mobility, climate change, and the environment, the electric car is obviously better suited. We also need to address pollution. The electric car is a way to reduce pollution in cities. Another aspect that is not directly linked with what we do now but also high on our list of priorities is traffic congestion because citizens living in cities really feel the traffic and congestion everyday. In a way, they get used to that but it is time consuming, it is expensive, and again it causes pollution." VOLVO XC40 TO BE FIRM'S FIRST FULLY ELECTRIC VEHICLE The Volvo XC40 will be the first battery electric car from Volvo and will arrive in 2019 after the Polestar 2. It will be followed by an electric XC90. Thomas Ingeleth has been quoted by Autocar at the launch of the S60: "“It’s not a secret any more that the first full electric Volvo is on its way with the XC40 coming. It will arrive very soon after the Polestar 2. That is the first to come that’s not exotic. We’ll start with XC40 and then on it will come step after step into our model range. The next car will be the next-generation XC90. That will be the masterplan of how electrification will come to the Volvo product range. We will not establish products beside our hybrids, we will introduce electrification as a powertrain variant within the existing portfolio. You could say that is different to a lot of the mass-production brands. But I have a hard time to understand how their plan will work in the long run. Electrification is the future of the automotive industry, so how do you handle that as soon as you come to the majority of electric cars? How do you handle it in your portfolio? I think it’s much more natural to say it’s a powertrain variant that over time will take up the majority of the sold vehicles." EV BATTERIES TO BALANCE GERMAN GRID There's a new project to balance the German power grid, and Germany is a leader in renewables. But we know sometime the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. "Mercedes-Benz Energy, is revitalizing an old coal power plant in Germany by turning it into a big energy storage facility. The company unveiled the new project on yesterday, June 21st, at the Elverlingsen power station, which makes use of more than a thousand modules from the battery packs of its Mercedes electric vehicles." says BenzInsider.com Although they've pulled out of the consumer market they're still moving forward with energy storage for commercial applications. "The new project of Daimler stacks 1,920 battery modules in the facility that can hold 9.8 MWh" from an installed capacity of 8.96MW Daimler said: "“The large storage plant is, therefore, a symbol for the transformation in the storage and use of energy—away from fossil electricity grid supply and towards a sustainable extension of the e-mobility value chain that reduces CO2" FOOTAGE OF THE TESLA SEMI We’ve been used to seeing footage of the Tesla Semi Trucks in shaky mobile camera footage but now something direct from Tesla's twitter account. Simply "Tesla Semi driving to Santa Rosa" Fred Lambert at Electrek says: "Santa Rose is about 50 miles away from the Golden Gate bridge – though the trip had to start at another location south of the bridge. The Tesla Semi prototypes have often been spotted around Sunnyvale, where Tesla has a prototyping facility, and Fremont, where Tesla has a factory. It wouldn’t be surprising if the vehicle started its journey from one of those locations – making the trip about 100 miles." That 600 miles range is still doubted by many in the trucking industry. History has taught us not to underestimate Tesla. CHINA INVESTS 7 TIMES MORE IN EVS THAN EUROPE "In the past year, China has secured €21.7 billion of investment in electric vehicles while Europe only secured €3.2 billion, according to a study by Transport & Environment, a European non-profit promoting sustainable transport policy." writes Benjamin Uyttebroeck for FleetEurope: "The Chinese government requires carmakers to obtain credits for the production of EVs that are equivalent to 10% of the overall passenger car market in 2019 and 12% in 2020. The European Commission, on the other hand, proposed new car CO2 reduction targets of 15% in 2025 and 30% in 2030 but didn't include any sales targets for zero-emission vehicles." Julia Poliscanova, clean vehicles manager of Transport & Environment, said: “China bet decisively on electric cars and is winning the race. It understood that production follows demand, and demand is created with smart, ambitious industrial policy. But Europe still can’t shake off its dirty diesel legacy. The EU ministers have two choices: either we set an EV sales target to keep auto jobs at home, or allow European carmakers to go on selling dirty diesels here while investing the earnings into EV production abroad and importing back made-in-China electric cars.” https://www.fleeteurope.com/en/taxation-and-legislation/europe/features/china-invests-7-times-more-evs-europe COMMUNITY Email from Hyundai to Norwegian customers of the Kona. Friday 11th May 2018. 17 EXPERTS EXPLAIN EVERYONE WILL BE DRIVING ELECTRIC VEHICLES The website Interesting Engineering have done a neat bit of research online, they've compiled quotes from 17 leading experts on the subject of EVs. I'll put a link in the show notes but some of my highlights include James Dyson who says "I believed that electrically powered vehicles would solve the vehicle pollution problem." Ferrari CEO Sergio Marchionone says" "If there is an electric supercar to be built, then Ferrari will be the first." Someone should tell Rimac. Maurizio Reggiani is the Lamborghini Head of R&D said: "I want to go one, two, three laps without having to stop and recharge after every lap.", as their first electric supercar pins it's hopes on supercapacitor technology. Renault Nissan Mitsubihi CEO Carlos Ghosn has said: ""The time is right for electric cars - in fact the time is critical." and he should know, his group sold half a million EVs in 2017. And how could I not include this quote: ""We will not stop until every car on the road is electric." - Elon Musk https://interestingengineering.com/17-experts-explain-why-the-whole-world-will-be-driving-electric-vehicles-sooner-than-we-think FORD EXPANDS PHEV TRANSIT TO VALENCIA The famous Transit van from Ford has been on trial in London for some time with a petrol powered, 1 litre engine working as a range extender to charge batteries, and next the trial heads to Valencia. Ford has announced they’re working with the regional and city government of Valencia to assess air the effects of reduced air pollution from commercial vehicles, with an all electric range of 50km or 31 miles. Ford need to catch up by their own admission, indeed i follow one person who I won't name on here but is reasonably high up in Ford UK, often jumping into conversations on Twitter in order to criticise and talk down EVs. I'm surprised he isn't a bit more guarded but perhaps his bosses at Ford either don't know, or care, or maybe agree. It's widely accepted this move to EVs will see winners and losers, and there must be a worry from more progressive people at Ford that they're currently outside the EV party. However at the very top of the company Ford remain resolute in electrifying. Steven Armstrong, president and CEO, Ford of EMEA said: "As no two cities are alike, it is vital that we look at the mobility issue from a variety of perspectives. Our research in Valencia will help us gain a meaningful understanding of the benefits that small and medium fleets running primarily on electric power can bring." https://www.just-auto.com/news/ford-expands-phev-to-valencia_id182540.aspx CALIFORNIA WILL REQUIRE SOLAR PANELS ON NEW HOMES The rumours yesterday turned out to be correct, and California did indeed vote to include solar on all new homes. That's 100,000 customers every year who will buy a new house and have solar ready to go. It comes into effect from January 1st 2020 and the California Energy Commission voted unanimously to push it through after a two year study on the background of the policy. It could generate 200 megawatts of extra power every year for the grid, which is on top of the 858 megawatts of solar which was added to existing homes last year. It could be just one of the reasons Tesla stock jumped yesterday, as those who fully understand Tesla is an energy company first, and a car maker second, saw the long term upside for Tesla. The key for me is that it will make it as normal as kitchen song or a bathroom suite, it just becomes something that houses now come with. Whilst it will add to the cost of the home, with the research suggesting it's around 8-12,000 dollars, homeowners will same of monthly electricity costs. Plus home builders who bulk order panels will surely further drive down the cost. AUTO EXPRESS RIDES IN MERCEDES EQ C Following Fully Charged riding in the Mercedes EQ C, other organisations who were under embargo have now revealed details, like Autocar. And they also point out my observation, or possible criticism, that it's built on the GLC-Class chassis and not a custom platform like the Jaguar I-PACE. That means it looks a lot like a conventional SUV but all that space up front for an ICE remains. The same will be true for the BMW iX3 though, as it's based on the X3 platform. The Autocar article gets more details out. Such as how the two motors will work together. Mercedes concept is that the front motor does most of the heavy lifting and operates on it's own most of the time. Then when you need performance, the rear motor joins in. Even though that's clever, i still don't understand yet how that one innovation would give a 70kWh pack a range of 310 miles or 500km. It's not even close to anything currently on sale or coming soon. The EQ C will ride on the E-Class Estate's self-levelling suspension though will make it waft. Very soon the Jaguar I-PACE will be fighting for buyers with the EQ C, the Audi e-tron Quattro and the BMW iX3 as well as the cheapest Tesla Model X - all quite similar SUV segment cars. MAGNA INTERNATIONAL REPORTS RECORD NET INCOME AND SALES Talking of the Jaguar: "Global auto parts giant Magna International posted record net income of $660 million in the first quarter of 2018, up 14 per cent from a year ago." reports Autonews.com. Magna are making the I-PACE under contract rather than Jag themselves. "In March, Automotive News Europe reported that Magna also will build two new sports cars jointly developed by BMW and Toyota. Magna declined to comment." JAPAN'S PANASONIC SEES 11.7 PERCENT PROFIT INCREASE Reuters reports that: "Panasonic, the exclusive battery cell supplier for Tesla Inc’s (TSLA.O) mass-market Model 3 electric car, forecast profit of 425 billion yen ($3.87 billion), from 380.54 billion yen a year prior." And in other news today, Panasonic and Tesla look to strengthen their battery relationship by working together on Tesla's first Chinese Gigafactory, which will include every step of the process under one massive roof - from cell production to final car assembly. ELECTRIC VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE SECTOR TO GATHER THIS SUMMER "The EV Infrastructure Summit, organised by Clean Energy News’ publisher Solar Media, is to be held between 3 – 4 July 2018 at London’s America Square Conference Centre, and will bring together all the major stakeholders in EV charging infrastructure." Clean Energy News say that: "The event is the only EV-focused event in Europe that has been specifically designed around cities, local authorities, workplaces and commercial carpark owners and operators, areas which will be integral to furthering the transition to clean transport." CHARGEPOINT UNVEILS NEW 2-MW CHARGER FOR ELECTRIC AIRCRAFT AND SEMI-TRUCKS How fast is REALLY fast for charging? When it's 2MW. That's what Chargepoint unveiled as a solution to get a lot of juice into electric aircraft and large trucks. Those kind of speeds mean you need a super large battery to cope with them, the kind of battery you'd see in a Tesla Semi Truck maybe? Chargepoint said "“The ChargePoint engineering team focused on several key elements in developing the new design. To meet performance requirements, up to four BMS interfaces and four 500-amp delivery circuits are needed. Each delivery circuit will have a voltage range from 200 to 1000 volts. To facilitate autonomous data and vehicle performance payload offload, a provision for high speed data transfer was also included. Designed to be used in heavy vehicle applications, the connector must be rugged and able to withstand the rigors of frequent use, while also being easy to insert and remove.” TESLA MODEL S X TO WORK WITH KEYLESS/SMARTPHONE ENTRY LIKE MODEL 3 I love a good promise from Elon Musk, and the latest is that the Model S and X will get keyless entry like the Model 3. In a story by Fred at Electrek, some good news for those who prefer to use their mobile app to enter their car. And in a related note, I took some heat from people on Twitter yesterday for saying that Tesla are the only car maker with a software dev team on overdrive, making your cars better every day. The opposing view is that a proper car maker, wh atever that is, would have the code finished by the time they release the car. But i don't agree, in a situation like this is was never foreseen for the Model S and X. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Tuesday 24th April 2018. The current Model 3 Tracker from Tom Randall and Dean Halford, as updated on 16th April, shows 19,675 cars produced, and a current rate of 2,673 Model 3’s being built per week. A quick heads up, in the UK the Commercial Vehicle Show starts today for 3 days. The new long range e-NV200 will be on show, with the 40kWh battery which should allow for around 110-120 real world miles of use for the van / people carrier. VW says they can’t keep up with demand for their Plug Ins, the Golf GTE and Passat GTE, so much so they’re closed the order books for now as factories are flat out. And I saw a tweet today from someone in the know that Hyundai IONIQ waiting time in Germany is almost a year! If anyone from Hyundai is listening please contact me and tell me that’s wrong, and that people can get it quicker. And lots was happening on Earth Day last weekend, including Washington DC mayor Muriel Bowser welcoming a fleet of 14 new pure EV Protera buses to start service on May 1, carrying 4.8million passengers a year. Plus City Furniture tweeted on Earth Day they had ordered 5 Tesla Semi Trucks, the first furniture retailer in the US to go electric. TESLA BACK IN BUSINESS Elon Musk’s recentl all-staff email confirmed the rumours, both Gigafactory 1 and Fremont were to shut down for a planned 3-5 days to upgrade equipment and systems needed to unlock the next wave of production targets, up to 6,000 Model 3’s per week by the end of June. And it looks like that shutdown is over, because 5,170 new Model 3 VINs have been registered. A reminder that tracks VIN numbers is one of the metrics used by the Bloomberg tracker I mention at the start of the show. However it’s only one way of measuring and, at times, not the most accurate. Previous weeks have seen them register between 3,000 and 4,800 VINs with NHTSA so this is large batch. This could well keep them going for the next 2 weeks, if the tracker figures are correct of 3,000 Model 3s per week. FERRARI’S SILENT FUTURE Two years ago Ferrari said never to an electric car. Bossman Sergio Marchinne is not a fan! Fast forward to today and they’ve been testing a hybrid at their own test track in Maranello. We reported on the video last month which showed, according to the YouTuber, a Ferrari taking off in silence. Bloomberg say: “Next year, Ferrari will start offering the technology in a sports car, its first model that can run entirely on battery power for any significant distance. The hybrid engine will soon be an option on all new models, and from 2020 the carmaker will use it as the sole drivetrain for its first sport-utility vehicle, which Marchionne says will be the fastest SUV on the market.” ABB BRING THE TERRA Maker of charging stations and sponsors of Formula E, everyones favourite Swedish-Swiss tech company ABB is busy this week showing off some new toys. Although with other charging groups such as CHAdeMO, they’re at an industrial technology show in Hannover all this week and attendees are getting a glimpse of their 350kW Terra chargers. The CEO of ABB, Ulrich Spiesshofer said in Hanover: “This high-power fast charger provides electric vehicles with up to seven times more range in the same charging time than with previous models” You may remember, if you’ve listened to previous podcasts, these are the chargers chosen by Electrify America for the 2,000 new chargers in almost 500 locations to be rolled out this year and next. They’ll cater for all options, CCS and CHAdeMo, although the CHAdeMO side will be software limited to 50kW whilst tests are ongoing, and then they’ll be delimited to 100kW. VOLVO TO SHARE THEIR EXPERTISE Volvo said yesterday they want to share as much as possible when it comes to their battery technology, to keep down R&D costs across its brands, which include Japan’s UD Trucks, Scania and Mack Trucks in the US. Battery technology is not only the differentiator for the most part, but the biggest cost of many EVs. Lars Stenqvist, chief technology officer at Volvo Group Trucks Technology, told Reuters: ““We’re really striving to reuse a lot when it comes to expensive components, which are expensive when it comes to development and production costs ... not only between the truck brands but also the bus brands and construction equipment. The benefit of the group is that we can get high volumes when we re-use components across the group.” We recently covered the story of Volvo’s first battery powered medium-duty trucks for deliveries and refuse collection. They joined Mitsubishi’s Fuso all electric truck which is already in use in the USA and Europe, and VW aren’t far behind with theirs too thanks to an alliance with Toyota, with the aim of using scale to reduce costs. A GLIMPSE INTO AN ELECTRIC FUTURE London had a remarkable drop in air pollution on Sunday, in fact is was down by 89%. What could cause pollution to plummet like that for such a specific time period? The answer is people who choose to run 26.2 miles on a Sunday morning and for some of them, that’s their idea of a good time! Marathon runners are mad, and I know because I’ve completed the London marathon, but my knees thanks me for moving in Triathlons. King’s College London took air samples during the London Marathon on Sunday when combustion-engined cars, buses and trucks area banned from the centre of the city to make room for runners. It’s the particularly harmful NOx Nitrogen Oxides which fell almost 90%. And it gives us a glimpse into the future of what the most polluted cities will be like when only EVs are being used for personal and public transport, a change which can’t come quick enough. And all thanks to 40,000 runners. Which, incidentally, is the same amount of people who die prematurely from emissions every year in Great Britain. For any cities watching on, maybe those who have announced their own permanent bans on petrol and diesel, the results will show how quickly the air quality can start to improve, and give them the confidence to move forwards with only allowing EVs on the roads. CHINESE BATTERY FIRM REPORTED TO BE SETTING UP ON VW DOORSTEP For anyone who doubts the Chinese are coming to make your cars, just like they make that mini-computer you have next to called a mobile phone, or cell phone, just take a look at the news happening almost daily now. They have big plans for the USA and Europe, and not just with their own brands, but with the parts used to power other makers as well. Chinese battery maker Tianjin Lishen are looking to open a sales office in the land of the luxury European car, Germany, so it can supply them with the batteries needed for all their EVs. Reuters claim: “A source close to Volkswagen said the company is in advanced talks with Tianjin Lishen on lithium-ion battery supply contracts, but agreements have not yet been signed. Any new office would be located near Wolfsburg, where Volkswagen has its headquarters, the source at Tianjin said, declining to give more specific detail.” What does that mean? Well VW want to sell 3million electrified vehicles annually by 2025 and each of their 300 models will be electrified by 2030. As supply chains go, on the numbers VW work with, those deals will indeed be in negotiations. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Sunday 22nd April 2018. VW PIKES PEAK EV CHALLENGER Volkswagen are moving forward with their fully electric Pikes Peak car, the all when drive challenger for the famous hill climb in June, which will see it tackle the 156-turn and 20km test in Colorado Springs. Today, Sunday 22nd April, VW will unveil the prototype in Paris. The car is said to be a testing ground for cutting edge technology which could make it’s way into the ID series road cars they’ll be selling in 2019. A full report on tomorrows show, and yes I’ll be tuned into the livestream! IMAGE LEAKED FROM TESLA R&D LAB A leaked image from inside Tesla shows the new roadster parked next to two Tesla Semi Trucks. It was first leaked on @TheTeslaLife twitter feed. The Roadster looks like Midnight Silver in colour but the whole picture itself is a slightly odd hue, definitely taken in a hurry on a smartphone and perhaps the lighting in the Tesla R&D lab wasn’t ideal for the camera. MODEL 3 TEARDOWN HAS MUNRO IN LOVE The team who work with car veteran Sandy Munro haven’t always been the most complementary about Tesla. In fact with the Model 3 when they first got it, they were scathing about build quality. He called it miserable. But what’s this? A new video from them following a Model 3 teardown shows a bit of a turn around. In fact at time, Mr Munro seems to be Elon Musk’s biggest fanboy. Jeez get a room already! He says Tesla are on a completely different level to anything else he’s seen with battery technology, particularly how well balanced all the modules are. You can watch the full show on Autoline After Hours but check out the part where he says the Model 3 electronics are comparable to a flight controller found on the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II stealth multirole fighter. He raves about not only the electronics, but also the battery, and suspension. According to Simon Alvarez at Teslarati who spotted the video: “According to Munro, the Model 3’s Automatic Drive Modules are a class above the industry, featuring a design architecture that is usually found on high-end electronics and government-grade machines. Munro even compared the Model 3’s drive module to the flight controller of the F-35, which he is familiar with due to his company’s work for the US military.” “If you look at this thing, this is cell phone technology. This is the technology we would see in really high-end computers, normally for the government. When you look at this, you’re looking at the same kind of technology you’d see on a flight controller for an F-35, and we kind of know a little bit about that too. We do work for the military. Everything here smacks of cell phone technology and defence technology,” Munro said. ““This is big stuff. This is not inching up. This is revolutionary, and everybody else is sitting there twiddling their thumbs.” He's still adamant things like fit and finish are below par but, now Elon is in charge and focussed on quality, he says even Toyota would be craping their pants. MYSTERY CAR MAKER TO USE WIRELESS CHARGING The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers has 39 societies, each one focused on a certain knowledge area. They provide specialized publications, conferences, business networking and sometimes other services. So now we know that, let me tell you why! IEEE.org say “an unnamed manufacturer will bring an electric car to market that offers wireless charging from WiTricity, Alex Gruzen, the company’s chief executive, tells IEEE Spectrum. "There’s often a misconception that somehow plugging in is 100 percent efficient," Gruzen says. "But a plug-in is from just 88 to 94 percent efficient; WiTricity's wireless system runs at 90 to 93 percent. The resonance also gives you a certain leeway in aligning the car and the charging plate. The vertical clearance can be as little as 10 centimetres (4 inches), for a sports car, and as much as 25 cm, for an SUV. The left-to-right positioning need be only within 10 cm of dead centre.” “Gruzen says it costs US $800 for a complete set—that is, for the receiver on the car, the transmitting pad, and the charging unit that connects to it. And, if the product comes to be offered as a standard feature in cars, it might add just $300 or so to the price of the car.” But what is that unnamed car? Let me tell you about the Geneva Motor Show, where a Hyundai Kona was on show in cutaway form, showing off…you guessed it, WiTricity tech fitted to it. RECORD EV SALES IN GERMANY LAST MONTH A quick sales report for Germany from CleanTechnica: “Electric vehiclefever has definitely caught on in Germany, with March coming in as a record month and echoing France’s record electric car sales month. Germany had over 6,700 electric car registrations last month, a 52% increase year over year (YoY). The plug-in vehicle share of the overall car market was 2%. But more important than the plug-in niche are the seismic changes happening in the fuel mix of the mainstream market: diesel sales continue to sink (-25%!) YoY, to the benefit of all other fuels”. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/04/21/record-electric-car-sales-month-in-germany-while-diesel-dives-march-electric-car-sales-report/ WORLDS LARGEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE The world’s largest EV was unveiled this week, and it’s a monster. The cement works in the Swiss town of Bienne will be home to the e-Dumper. It weighs 58 tonnes, the tyres are a huge 2 metres in diameter, and the driver climbs up 9 steps to get to the cab. However whereas these would normally be diesel, spewing out thousands of tonnes of CO2 over it’s lifetime and using hundreds of thousands of litres of diesel, electrons do the heavy lifting. It will be carrying limestone and rock downhill, so it’s descending with a full load, where all the regen happens. And because the driver takes Lynx back up the hill with no load, all the power needed comes from the regen before. Therefore, energy consumption is zero. SUBARU EVOLTIS And finally a little update on Subaru. They are part of the Subaru Corporation in Japan and have a rich heritage in making bonkers fast rally and road cars. They’re still around and were the 22nd largest auto maker at the last count. Thanks to Toyota owning a 16.5% stake in their parent company it makes sense for Toyota to loan them a few bits, and the most obvious donor vehicle is the Prius Prime PHEV. How about if Subaru maintained their reputation for all wheel drive in cars like the Impreza with an ICE driving the front wheels, and electric motors driving the rear wheels? Add in the recent filing from Subaru registering the name Evoltis and we could be looking at their first EV. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Friday 23rd March 2018. RIGHT HAND DRIVE MODEL 3s Firstly I can see from the podcast stats there’s a 2:1 chance you’re listening North America. This show has about twice as many listeners in the USA compared to everywhere else. Second by the is the UK, and then it’s Europe. So a note from any Model 3 reservation holders hoping for a right hand drive car – Elon Musk tweeted at 10:22am on Thursday morning in reply to a question. Tom on Twitter said: “What I really want to know is some info on the roadmap for Model 3 in the UK. How long do I have to watch and cry at amazing YouTube reviews?”. Well Elon saw it, from all the thousands of mentions he gets each day, and replied: “Probably mid next year before we are able to make RHD. Wish it could be sooner. Maybe try a Model S, used or new in the meantime? Used is better than a new 3 imo, unless you want a smaller car”. And that’s the problem Elon…you’ve been to the UK, you know everything is smaller here from hotel rooms to parking spaces. American’s come to Europe, book a hotel room, and go “where’s the rest of it?”. A Model S is biiig. However, I agree. I’ve been looking on the approved used Tesla website for a while now and £50,000 buys a great car, with warranty, direct from Tesla. My monthly train ticket from down here by the beach in Poole to London is £800 a month, the same price for finance on a used Tesla Model S. I can’t tell you, as I sit on a crowded train 5 days a week, how much I’d rather be driving a Model S instead. DAIMLER TRUCKS HIT THE ROAD Everyone is talking about the Tesla Semi Truck but Daimler Trucks handed over the first all-electric trucks to customers this week. They are smaller, 7.5tonne trucks with 100km range for urban, last mile use. Trucks destined for the Europe and the USA are made in Portugal. And this model is already being used since last September in New York, Japan and Germany. FASTER FAST CHARGING AT HOME American EVSE maker ClipperCreek just launched the new 64amp EV charger for $969, the cheapest 64amp system around, which can deliver 15.4kW of power. If you want to charge your EV at home with this, whilst it’s a great price, you’ll probably need to beef up your home power installation a bit. They say they’re launching this Level 2 charger because more EVs are on the market which can charge at faster speeds. SEAT ANNOUNCES NEW EV The 4th Gen SEAT Leon will go into production in 2019, and confirmed to be a Plug In Hybrid, which could mean there is hybrid tech in the rather rapid, and very hot, Cupra variant. And actually rather than being badged Seat, could be badged Cupra under it’s own name rather than a sub brand. Chances are they might do what their owner, VW, do with the Golf GTE. It will be on sale in 2020. Also in 2020 will be their first full Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) built on VW’s MEB platform. 311 miles is the range given, so this basically the VW I.D. but in SEAT form. Only 15% of SEAT sales are outside Europe so if you’re listening to this and a bit in the dark as to who they are, they’re the Spanish, slightly less premium and and slightly cheaper bit of VW. MAINSTREAM VIEW OF NISSAN LEAF Here in the UK the Huffington Post has reviewed the new Nissan LEAF. Youtube videos and reviews of the new leaf are now quite common, but let’s see what a mainstream, non-EV focussed publication has to say. Highlights include: “Nissan leaf: it now has a range of 235-miles, can be charged to 80% in just 40mins, and can drive itself even in slow-moving city centres” So just to stop there – 235 miles? You’ll be lucky. Self-driving? I think Nissan would like you to call it driving assist. And as for rapid charging, Nissan PR are doing a good job of addressing complaints from people whose LEAF gets grumpy on a rapid. Let’s continue: “The interior looks and feels about as futuristic as Windows 95, which is a real shame. Considering the industry’s desire to actively move people over to electric cars, this feels like a missed opportunity.” That’s interesting because every review of the every EV which has even slightly different styling, inside or outside, is critical. Look at every review of the i3 and someone is bound to say something about it’s looks. Onwards: “There is half a digital screen behind the wheel which offers a glimmer of technological hope, but is actually quite confusing to navigate. And the screen in the centre console is not great. Car manufacturers who won’t use high-resolution touchscreen displays for their cars are frustrating: it’s not technically difficult, yet so many skimp on the display. The result is something that’s low-resolution and really slow to respond.” Here I do agree. Look at the display even on a cheap £200 tablet and it shames most cars apart from a Tesla. Why are car makers so behind with screen technology? Finally: “The e-Pedal, which turns the accelerator into a brake when you pull your foot back, feels deeply odd to begin with. But you do get used to it, and the premise is that you can do everything with one foot.” MORE BOLTS FOR AUSTIN 20 Chevrolet Bolt EV’s are heading to Texas for the Maven service. You can have a car for $229 per week for unlimited miles, insurance and maintenance. Maven Gig drivers get access to Maven Charging and you can reserve and do everything through the app. Maven Gig is the rideshare platform also used for deliveries. They say: “Maven now offers its first all-electric fleet of cars for use in the gig economy, making it easier for Austinites who want to get the most out of their side hustle. Today 20 Chevrolet Bolt EVs became available for freelance drivers in Austin to earn money on their own schedules. The city’s passion for tech start-ups, combined with its high concentration of college students, makes it the ideal location for Maven Gig. Maven is working with Austin Energy, the Austin Transportation Department, and Rocky Mountain Institute to create infrastructure solutions leading to an all-electric future. Maven will leverage Austin’s Plug-in EVerywhere™ network of EV chargers, including Electric Drive, Austin’s downtown smart mobility showcase complete with a DC Fast Charger and solar kiosk.” ZERO EMISSION MILES MORE IMPORTANT For those of you not familiar with Tony Seba from RethinkX, depending on which twitter comment you read, he’s either a visionary who is more accurate about future transport than anyone else, or a salesman who relies on the oxygen of publicity created by making wild claims. You should read his thoughts and watch him on Youtube, do some critical thinking and make your own mind up. A new article on the RethinkX website says those who are leading climate policy change are getting it wrong by focussing on Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) and it’s the zero emission miles which matter. He says countries and States such as California are all about setting sales targets for vehicles by certain dates, and focussed on the charging infrastructure. The problem, says Tony, is that personal cars aren’t driven enough, with ride sharing like Uber and Lyft using cars 10 times more. Private cars are driven on average 4% of the time. He says those who build the models which policymakers use are basing it all on private ownership. Take an ICE car and turn it into a battery electric car. This is aided in places like America with tax rebates and here in Europe with a direct subsidy. Tony’s whole philosophy is Transport As A Service, where EV’s, autonomous vehicels and on-demand transport come together. His theory is that, if Level 4 autonomous electric vehicles were licenced in 2020, by 2030 95% of miles driven would be driven by them. My take is that we shouldn’t abandon the focus on EV’s but combine both approaches. I think it’s the best way to decarbonize cities and population dense areas. I work in the capital, London, and used to live there. I owned a car and a motorhome both parked on street – don’t laugh. It makes total sense for fewer cars to drive more miles. It eases congestion, is safer, quicker and cheaper. All those EVs can drive themselves back to ‘base’ during quiet times and feed power back to the grid when we’re cooking our dinner. But I also live outside London in a small town, and I come from a country village. The idea of losing personal mobility isn’t so attractive. Being in an area where a car is minutes away is fine, having a car 20 minutes away from driving all the way to your house to take you to the shop for milk and eggs? I’m not bought into that yet even if it’s cheaper. Economics are powerful, but so are habits. Out in the country personal mobility is a way of life very different to a city with a great bus system, mass transit, tube, and Uber. Where I live we’re a long way from every having Uber licenced to operate here. Either way Tony makes you think and I followed with interest his speech which opened the day at the recent rEVolution conference. Please do ready more. MODEL 3 AND SIRI MAKE FRIENDS Tesla’s software engineers have been pulling more than a few long shifts recently. Along with vastly improved Autopilot which, according to all the YouTube reviews cropping up this week, seems to have almost magical abilities. Model 3 owners have something else to cheer. The Model 3 now works with Apple’s Siri. You can ask Siri to check if you locked it, and even where you left it. Although if you don’t know where you left your car, you probably need more help than a virtual assistant. NEW VOLVO ENGINE FOR PHEVs I told you on a previous podcast about Volvo, and in turn parent company Geely, calling time on investing in R&D for new combustion engines. So given their life cycle, the new crop of Volvo engines are the last ones we’ll see, and they’ll probably last to the mid 2020’s. For the first time they’ve made a 3 cylinder engine for their electrified XC40, with the Drive-E powertrain making up 10% of sales. Volvo say: “the new three-cylinder powertrain has been deliberately designed for integration into Twin Engine plug-in hybrid cars. A hybridised as well as a pure electric powertrain option for the XC40 will be added later.” I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Sunday 11th March 2018. TESLA KEEPS YOU LEGAL A Tesla driver claims he dodged a traffic fine by arguing his Tesla Model S was driving itself in semi-autonomous Autopilot mode at the time he was pulled over in Los Angeles. Joseph Mourad, is a music producer and DJ, and said that his violation for using his mobile phone whilst driving, and also driving too fast, were dropped because he could show Autopilot was keeping him legal. However, LA courts said the ticket had to be dropped: “The reason the ticket was dismissed was because the officer didn’t show up.” NEW CHINESE VENERE Autoblog reported that a new full-electric offering from Shanghai-based LVCHI Auto. It's called the Venere. They said: “The four-door four-seater comes with some eye-popping performance claims, including more than 1,000 horsepower from its 100kWh battery and four electric motors — two each at the rear and front — that each generate 185 kilowatts and a whopping 1,135 pound-feet of torque. It also boasts a 2.5-second 0-62 mph time, a top speed of 177 miles per hour and a driving range of 405 miles on a single charge. We'll believe these claims when the car proves them.” Like all concepts, you can say what you want (within reason, if you eventually want to be taken seriously) but here’s to another EV coming out of China. RIMAC PROVE THEY HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOUR To start today I’d like to pass on a few more details about the Rimac C_Two, which we all first saw earlier this week at the Geneva Motor Show. Perhaps unfairly to Rimac, even though they built a stellar Concept_One, in the wider world they’re more famous for Richard Hammond launching one off a hillside in Switzerland and seeing how many times you could roll it over before it set fire to itself. It was one of 10 they built. I remember watching the owner on a video with Hammond after the crash, and he seemed remarkably relaxed and joking about one tenth of his company’s output being turned some charred battery remains. However proving he really does have a sense of humour, the Rimac C_Two has a fire extinguisher, with a label on the strap: “in case of hill climb, extinguish fire”. Spec recap: 1,888 horsepower, 1,696 pound-feet (2,300 Newton-meters) of torque, 0-60 mph in just 1.85 seconds (with a rolling start, but we’ll let them off) and a top speed of 256 mph (412 kph) limited only by the rubber of the tyres. And in case you thought it was a one lap wonder, the 120kWh battery is good for 404 miles (605 kilometres). When it’s not on fire. This time there will be 150 of them, so join in line behind me. E-TRON ORDERS BEING TAKEN An electric car which IS a lot closer to being on your driveway is the Audio e-tron. Electric Cars Report says pre-orders are now underway here in the UK: “The £1,000 deposit towards the first ever series production full EV from Audi can be placed online at audi.co.uk. When the priority ordering system is activated, depositors will immediately be informed of the final UK pricing and specification position and of the options available, enabling them to submit an order via their preferred Audi Centre before the car becomes publicly available later this year. The £1,000 deposit is offset against the purchase price, and is fully refundable at any time.” Given the deposit is refundable, I’m tempted to go through the system just to find out more! Although my wife would kill me if I did accidentally buy an e-tron. UPS WANT MORE THAN A SEMI We know that UPS are early supporters of the Tesla Semi Truck with 125 coming their way but UPS also want to build their own EVs from the group up. They’ll be doing it with the help of Workhorse. Now, New Atlas say: “Workhorse too has a number of future-facing electric vehicle concepts in the pipeline, including drones, a range-extended pickup truck, a flying taxi and also a delivery van that launches drones from the roof. But the new partnership will have it work with UPS to build a new electric truck from the ground, up tailored specifically to its purposes. It says the resulting trucks will have a range of 100 miles (160 km), suitable for carting goods around cities while creating zero emissions and minimal noise.” Delivery will be by day and they plan to overnight charge. MERCEDES WALLBOX Mercedes have some gorgeous electric cars in the pipleline like the EQC, to rival the Jaguar I-PACE and the Audi e-tron, but they want you to have their own home charger as well. This time the naming is nothing exotic. In fact it’s not even that imaginative. In fact, we think the intern got the job of naming it. The charging box you’ll put on your wall is to be called The Wallbox. Charge rates will be up to 22kW, it can do two EV’s at once and of course will be super connected as everything is with Internet Of Things. Mercedes say: “The intelligent Advanced and Twin wallboxes are internet-capable, with a built-in electricity meter and allow access control by RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). This makes it possible to manage several vehicles of different users, which is especially attractive for fleets – as well as for office communities or apartment buildings. Thanks to intelligent sharing of the charging power by local load management with up to 14 additional wallboxes, there is no need – even if several wallboxes are installed – for expensive upgrading of the existing house connection.” Thank you for listening today, I hope you've enjoyed it. Friday 9th March 2018. Before I kick off the show today a word about the Tesla Semi Trucks on the road right now. The two prototypes we saw at launch are now ferrying batteries between the Gigafactory and Fremont for production. Lots of pictures are making their online, checkout InsideEVs or even just search on twitter. TWITTER TIME WITH ELON REVEALS MORE A recent tweet by Elon Musk regarding Tesla maps and navigation suggests the product is nearly ready to roll out. And by that, of course, I mean an Over The Air (OTA) update. This is not to be confused with another story recently regarding a beta-test of the Tesla Autopilot. According to occasional reports from Tesla owners the current maps and navigation can plan odd or overly complex routes. It was all the way back in Summer of 2017 that reports surfaced of Tesla creating their own maps using open source code from MapBox and Valhalla. ‘Tesla Maps’ was first reported to Electrek.co by their reader 'verygreen' who hacked it in his own car. Late in 2017 the same hacker took Tesla’s 2017.44 software update and identified ‘Vector Maps’ within it. The benefit of those vector maps seems to be more detail, a further zoom and a smoother user interface. Going back to Elon's tweet, what he previously described as 'light years ahead' he now says is ‘almost done’. Once again we're learning more about the work Tesla is doing in the tweets Elon sends in response to questions from owners. https://evne.ws/electrek MORE BOLTS FROM BARRA General Motors CEO Mary Barra has announced her company will expand production of the Chevrolet Bolt. She was speaking recently at an energy conference by IHS Markit in Houston. There have been several stories in the news regarding comments made by oil execs about electric cars and they all seem to have happened there. Earlier this week Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser told CNBC it would take "generations" for a transformation toward electric vehicles. Much is a generation? 15 or 20 years? So multiples of that suggests electrification is 40 years off in his mind. Maybe I'm putting numbers into his mouth but you decide what that phrase means. However that's where Mary Barra took the opportunity to disagree in a CNBC interview: "I think it's going to happen more quickly than decades, as more and more people recognize that we have the right range, understand that we have a charging infrastructure so they don't think you're going to be stranded, I think you're going to see EV adoption continue". And that leads on to her comments about increased Chevrolet Bolt production later this year at its Orion Assembly plant near Detroit to meet growing demand around the world for the all-electric model. She didn't give a percentage increase but would say the ramp-up would create new jobs at the plant, so it sounds like they're adding shifts rather just offering a bit of overtime around. She also said: "We see a role in investing, in partnering and making sure that that customer need is fulfilled" in a move that signals partnership are on the cards for charging. https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/07/mary-barra-gm-ceraweek-chevy-bolt.htm HATERS GONNA HATE Meanwhile perhaps the best people to ask about electric cars aren’t the folk who profit from selling fossil fuels. But let's enjoy some comments from that same energy conference. BP CEO Bob Dudley sees “tremendous” opportunities around the corner, but they're “not the silver bullet that everyone’s looking for." Total’s CEO Patrick Pouyanne already has and EV. He likes how quiet it is, but say he has to rent a battery. “I’m spending more to rent my battery than to pay for the gasoline I was putting in my small car. I’m convinced that, in a big city, we’ll have plenty of electric cars in 10 to 15 years. When it comes to oil demand though let’s be clear that what is important is the kilometres driven, and a small car in the city does not drive a lot of kilometres a year". Mike Lorenz, executive vice president of gasoline retail company Sheetz Inc., doesn’t see autonomous vehicles in the cards. “It’s one of those things that, it sounds cool, but I can’t see that happening any time soon.” And they all have a point from the perspective that only 20% global oil demand goes towards transport. Even if ever car on the planet was an EV, the other 80% of oil demand is actually in growth. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-03-06/what-the-world-s-oil-giants-said-about-electric-cars-at-ceraweek MCLAREN SAY NO TO EV McLaren Automotive won’t be adding an electric car to its range before 2022 because the Woking-based company believes they are not yet exciting enough to drive. McLaren boss Mike Flewitt has confirmed to Autocar that an EV isn't on the medium term plan: "With EVs, developing is the right word, and we have an electric mule running around. It's more for the attributes than the powertrain itself. How exciting can an EV be? Next to the Senna, it isn't. It's some way off and it's not in the plan because we don't have the answer at the moment." He also said that to match the performance of a ICE supercar it would have enough batteries to weigh two tons. He's obviously an expert, and I'm certainly not smart enough to be leading the road car project of the world’s second most successful F1 team of all time behind Ferrari but, and I mean this respectfully, the Rimac 2 announced at Geneva seemed to tick a lot of the boxes he says can’t be ticked. Even the Rimac One is a beast. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motor-shows-geneva-motor-show/no-electric-mclaren-2022 BUFFERING WITH BATTERY BACKUPS The latest crop of electric cars, from the I-PACE to the Audio e-tron talk about 150kW charge speeds. And of course Porsche are committed to 800-volt 350kW charging for their Mission E. You may also know that there are now five ultra fast charging network coming to Europe, so that we're future-proofed for charging. Now a Danish company called Nerve Smart Systems claims those charging stations will handle full charge rates of multiple vehicles at once. Their solution is the Nerve Switch, a battery buffer which doesn't require such a hefty grid connection, which saves time and money. Think off all those places where you'd love to stop for 20 minutes to top up to 80% state of charge, but they might not be places with deep pockets to fund a replacement and costly grid connection. The CEO, Jesper Boie Rasmussen, explains: “Most people talk about the range of electric vehicles, but in fact it’s the charging time that should worry future car owners when choosing between an electric and a conventional car. Towards 2020, the charger market is expected to grow by 30 percent annually, and by 2030, 30 percent of the European car fleet will consist of electric vehicles. It provides a great perspective for our solution because it both ensures fast charging for the car owners and solves the capacity problems on the power grid, which occur when more and more people are charging.” And once again it's the pace of change which is enabling solutions, and this is key. It's the bit I remind people of all the time. The curve can't be calculated on the current technology. EV's and their infrastructure are more silicon valley than Detroit and Munich. As new solutions are developed the costs shrink dramatically. Think of Moore's Law with processing. And whilst the same law doesn’t apply to batteries or EV's there's something similar at play, which means the rulebook today is torn up tomorrow. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/03/07/new-danish-350-kw-ev-charge-contender-nerve-smart-systems-focus-smart-battery-buffer-management/ FROM A LISTENER Finally a quick mention for one of the podcast listeners in France. I haven’t asked him if I can use his name, so respectfully I won’t for now just in case people prefer their privacy, but it’s regarding wait times for the new Nissan LEAF This gentleman messaged me earlier to say his dealer called today, and his LEAF 2.zero launch edition which had been planned for mid-February, then delayed to 15th March was being pushed back again to 9th To add insult to injury, there is a 4000Euro scheme to trade in old diesels which expires at the end of this month, so around 750 people stand to lose thousands because they can’t take delivery in time. That sucks, I’m so sorry and disappointed for you. I did check in with the latest from Nissan and issued a statement today that they’re selling a new LEAF every 12 minutes, and that demand is strong. Orders are now up to 19,000, of which 13,000 were pre-orders. Of course in Europe they’re being made in Sunderland, the same location as where the batteries were being made before Nissan sold off their interest in that operation. I have no more knowledge of supply chains than you, but I’m sure if they could get you a car sooner they would. What I think suck is feeling let down. If you always knew it was April that is one thing, but twice being pushed back is what is not fair to you.
