The U.S. Department of Energy is offering $7 billion in funding to create a network of six to ten sites across the nation to develop and commercialize hydrogen made from renewable energy such as wind and solar. Hydrogen can be used as a fuel, to generate electricity or for industrial applications, including making fertilizer and refining petroleum. Most hydrogen today is produced using natural gas, a fossil fuel which is accelerating climate change. Lake Oswego-based Obsidian Renewables is one of the energy companies applying for funding from the DOE's regional clean hydrogen hubs program. It wants to build a pipeline connecting two facilities located in Hermiston and Moses Lake, Washington to generate hydrogen primarily from wind and solar power. The Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association, a public-private partnership which includes the Washington Department of Commerce and the Oregon Department of Energy, is also competing for federal dollars to spur investment in clean hydrogen projects. The details of its proposal have not been made public, but the association claims it could create tens of thousands of jobs to supply the aviation, agriculture and other industries with green hydrogen. Joining us are Ken Dragoon, the director of hydrogen development at Obsidian Renewables, and Rebecca Smith, a senior energy policy analyst at the Oregon Department of Energy.

Sebastian Francisco Lopez died while working at a farm in Marion County, and an unnamed worker died shortly after collapsing at a Walmart distribution center in Hermiston.
We had a technical glitch so there are no reminders at the beginning of this week. Sorry, you don't get to hear us ramble for five minutes before we start reading ;-) Mom hears from Vegas in this one and later gets a reminder of why she left. Online dating is feeling like a bust, what she really wants is a bad boy with a heart of gold. She goes to Hermiston for her favorite grandson's birthday but he ends up in the hospital with bronchitis. Then she returns to Las Vegas and tries to improve her life, relationship, and physical/mental health. Money is still tight without the settlement then Vegas makes her question her decision to return. More talk about marriage?
In this episode of City Focus, Hermiston Mayor Dave Drotzmann looks back at the history of Funland park, how the community has rallied to rebuild it not once, but twice and what visitors and families can expect in the newly rebuilt park! Pain pills lead to fights which leads to sleeping in cars. This gets Mom thinking of a move to Phoenix. With the pain from surgery and the stress from her relationship she feels the need to make some big changes in her life. She just needs money to do it. Make up, fight, more sleeping in cars, then back again. Phill has a possible deployment to Iraq so Mom takes a quick trip to Hermiston to see him. Getting back, Mom and Vegas have one more big fight.

Roger Hermiston: Two minutes to midnight with TRE´s Giles Brown
James Robertson, brilliant author of The Testament of Gideon Mack, and University of Edinburgh's top prof. Penny Fielding beam in from their respective corners of Scotland. Extensive reference is made to (John's madly beloved) James Hogg and to Robert Louis Stevenson, especially his Jack-the-Ripperesque Jekyll and Hyde. The violence that underpins slavery–aye, even in Scotland, and even during the enduringly influential Scottish Enlightenment–is dredged up, as is the question of feeling implicated in the legacy of an enslaving system. James sketches a generous theory about what and how a novel signifies: it is simply asleep until a reader picks it up and invests imagination into it. Hints are dropped regarding James's newest novel, News of the Dead due for release in May. And, of course, we learn about his writerly treat… Mentioned in the Episode Louis L'Amour, J. T. Edson and Will Henry Robert Louis Stevenson, Jekyll and Hyde, Weir of Hermiston (“a tragic part of his life….and I'd like to finish it for him”) James Hogg, The Private Memoir and Confessions of a Justified Sinner Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (imagine watching during its first release and…. not knowing! Joseph Knight…..and the actual Joseph Knight (“a history I didn't know, and I'd done two history degrees!”) The Fanatic Edinburgh's Dundas Statue Johns Hopkins, a slaveowner Ben Okri, Birds of Heaven, “Nations and peoples are largely the stories they feed themselves.” Aarthi Vadde is Associate Professor of English at Duke University. Revenue Management – The Podcast Welcome to Hospitality Highlights! In this 27th episode of the ThinkUp Podcast, host Lily Mockerman talks with Vinny Cuneo of Autocamp, a unique alternative accommodation option. Strategies to Deploy to Maximize Revenue and Guest Value Perception Highlights from this episode Lily: There have been certain advantages to experience driven lodging options, especially in the mindsets of travelers dealing with the restrictions of COVID. What opportunities do you think hotels have to capitalize on that or mimic some of the successes? Vinny: I think no matter where you are, be it Yosemite National Park or Hermiston, Oregon, it doesn't matter. There's something unique and inherently cool about every place in the world. Really dive into that and build those relationships with the local community, then give guests that true local experience. Lily and Vinny go on to discuss: Where glamping/alternative accommodations overlap with traditional hospitality and where it stands aloneHotel companies are quickly moving in the direction of commercial strategy. Ep 24: Dealing with health problems at any age is not pleasant, but when they affect small children it's even more disheartening. Today's guest, Lucy Hermiston, has had her share of health issues and from a very young age. She dealt with eczema, inflamed sinuses, chronic tonsillitis, and juvenile arthritis all before the age of 15. Little relief was found until experimenting with the removal of certain foods from her diet, the first being dairy. To her parents delight, and hers as well of course, the symptoms vanished. Most recently as an adult, Lucy's dealt with digestive issues, prompting her to study holistic nutrition in order to learn all she could about her body, nutrition, and healing. We talk about when she realized the powerful impact food has on the body, the moment she decided to stop eating animals, and the disassociation of loving animals and eating them. We also get into the energetics of food, food storage, nightshades, and eating in context to nourish the body and soul. Other subjects include conscious living, recycling, NYC versus LA, Diwali, CBD, social media, and the influence of what we internalize through our eyes and ears has on us physically. Lucy, who's lived all over the world, now resides in Los Angeles with her husband TJ and puppy Loki. www.therefinedhippie.com @therefinedhippie Tipalink.com

Mom got on AOL and started checking out the photo personals. An interesting coincidence led to a date, but was Mom ready for something serious? The holidays arrived and Mom was getting ready to go to Hermiston. Phillip shared that the baby on the way was a girl! But Happy New Year (1999) wasn't so happy at work.
We made it back to Bend and Mom got her job back at Trappers. She also typed up the divorce papers and was getting ready to send them off to Mac. Around this time she committed to enrolling in college with plans on becoming an attorney. Mom's friend was facing eviction because so many people were staying at the house so Mom took us to stay with our Grandma in Hermiston until she could find a more permanent place. When Mom got back to Bend, she met a guy and went out on a date. After a couple of weeks her and her new boyfriend came back to Hermiston to get us so we could get back into school. At this point we had been out of school for almost 6 weeks and there were only 5 weeks left. Mac was hassling Mom and even started calling our Grandma. But Mom was happy with her new relationship, she thought it was fun and relaxed and even mentioned that it kind of felt too good to be true. Mac refused to sign the summons when Mom sent the divorce papers so she had to start all over again and was planning on having him served with either a sheriff's deputy or Mac's parole officer. She also requested that Mac not be issued travel permits to Bend or Hermiston. Mom got a new job driving “MPAs” for a company in Sunriver.
Mom was dreaming of winning the lottery but still hustled to get some money to keep us afloat. She also notified our landlady that we'd be moving. We finally get around to telling the bat story. We got our phone bill, wait until you hear how much it was! We all made a trip back to Hermiston to visit friends and Mom went to Pullman, WA to make a delivery for Mac. Mac's parole paperwork was going from Washington to Oregon and back so Mom was making calls to ensure everything would be where we needed it for his hearing. Mom impressed herself with her progress running at the track.
Phillip (and the Journal) turn 10 years old. Our budget was still really tight, mostly due to collect phone calls from Mac in Walla Walla. Mom went to visit him again and her feelings were getting more serious, but after a night out and a missed phone call she wasn't sure things would last. School was going well for Mom, she liked doing perms and got a big tip for doing one. This really boosted her confidence. Money problems sent Mom scrambling. She had to figure out how to live for two weeks with no savings, no income, no welfare and no food stamps. One bright bit was that the rent got reduced again but with the skyrocketing phone bill it didn't help much.
Mom started school at the beauty college in Hermiston and very quickly realized how busy she would be for the next year trying to keep up with school, homework, housework and us boys. After a late night call from a suitor, Mom mentions her views on men are changing. She wanted dinner, dancing and drinks or nothing at all. She also got a call from the “Mystery Man” and was starting to see him for who he really was. She mentioned she still had plans on moving us to Boise. Mom wanted to get away from Hermiston, open a shop where she could do hair and start building a normal life. The money situation was getting better with welfare, student loan and grant money and good news about our rent. Mom mailed some letters to Mac in prison but didn't hear back from him because she unknowingly sent contraband and he hadn't gotten them yet. She also mentioned she was planning on taking a trip to Walla Walla to visit him. Mom went on a strict diet for this first visit and then went. He got in a little trouble after her visit. She was already starting to like him and said that she thinks the guards were out to get him.
Mom got our car running, only to have it die for the last time. She planned to sell it piece by piece to get as much money out of it as possible. She was also dreaming of big money and big changes with a financial plan she believed would set us up for life. Mom had to leave her job due to the car troubles so she made a new plan… SCHOOL!! She went to Hermiston vs. Pendleton high school football game that had a surprising end. TURNING POINT!! Okay so normally we just highlight the topic we cover in the podcast, but this time we have some explaining to do… We thought this episode was going to run long, but after some edits we are right around our normal time. Sorry if the edits are a little choppy. A major change in our lives begins and we get into that a little. We edited some stuff out but left most of it in. Let's hope we aren't throwing too much out there before we read what Mom wrote, but we felt the authenticity of the emotion was important to what we are adding to this journal. As we continue we're going to try to read what Mom wrote and then react rather that telling our thoughts. With that being said, we have a lot of thoughts, feeling and emotions around these topics so from time to time we might go off the rails. We're not going to say anything more here, so please take the time and listen to the episode. There's certainly a lot more to come, but this the beginning of a new (darker) chapter in our lives. Thanks for listening and drop us a line with your thoughts.
Money was tight so Mom was borrowing to get by. She was getting ready to start a new job, still working with potatoes but in town! Mom gets us our first “real” computer. Mom continues her search for a new guy and wants a steady boyfriend but ends up spending more time with “R”. Our beast of a car finally died for good. And Mom was still dreaming about getting us out of Hermiston. On a side note: This is the calm before the storm, come back next week to find out what the hell we're talking about.
The intro is really long in this one, sorry about that. One important note, this Saturday, September 3, 2016, marks the 5th anniversary of Mom's passing. If you feel like it please spend a moment in silence for her, we'd really appreciate that. It's not in the Journal but we tell a story about getting caught stealing candy from the bulk foods section of a grocery store. That took place around the time this part of the Journal was being written. We also talk about an incident where Mom let us go to the pool but didn't remember and was going nuts because she was actually asleep when we “woke” her. We also moved again, this time to a low-income apartment on the other side of town. Mom and her mystery man were on-again, off-again… again. Mom was also planning on moving us to Boise instead of Portland so we could get away from Hermiston. Money was still really tight and Mom resorted to asking a friend for some to help us get by. Mom finally got her transfer to Swing Shift at work but wanted to get a babysitter that would watch us boys at our place so she wouldn't have to get us up in the middle of the night again. Enjoy!
Mom was having regrets about leaving “R” but was hoping to move out of Hermiston and closer to her latest crush. Us boys were off having fun with our Grandpa in Portland and Mom was worrying about the future. She started talking about moving to Portland so she could go to school then found out we would be moving again into Low Income Housing which was going to help with the budget A LOT.
Mom sent us to stay with our aunt then our grandparents for one to two months for the summer. She was working weekends at the sand drags again and was hoping to see her new friend. She wasn't writing much but did mention that she was really missing us. She didn't mention anything about the Fourth of July or her birthday ten days later. She did get asked to go on a blind date with a guy from work, it was her first blind date ever. She went to the Midway in Hermiston and won her category in an arm wrestling competition. We find out that things were still happening with the Mystery Man and Mom decided she wanted to make a big change and do something like move to Portland so she could go back to school. Enjoy!
Mom and “R” finally got notice that their divorce would be final soon then her doctor said she was depressed and prescribed her medication to help. She was hoping the medicine would help her mood improve. She was also still wanting to move away from Hermiston, she was thinking the coast would be nice. Mom then passed her operator test at work and went back to graveyard shift. Things also seemed to be going from “on again” to “off again” with her mystery man. Money was also becoming more of a stress but while trying to earn more money serving beer at the sand drags she met a new guy that she really liked, it got weird though. And finally our grandpa came to visit and show off his “talking” car.
Going to the dentist is fun! Well, it was in 1982 when you had no cavities. We spent the night with some friends and got to watch movies on a "video tape machine". We also took a road trip to Bellingham, Washington for an opportunity Mom's aunt was offering. It could have involved a move, but in the end the decisions was made not to go. But we had fun, we got home made slingshots and ran around like kids do in the woods. This brought up memories of a few years later when we visited again and ended up working in a strawberry field picking strawberries for almost no money. It was around this time that Mom started writing in Book 16. We also remenisce a bit about Hermiston.
Mom kept working hard to build a better life for our family. She was trying to talk "R" into taking a job in Venezuela for three years. It was good pay, especially for 1982, and would have gotten us out of Hermiston, a place Mom was beginning to really dislike. She spent a lot of time with one of her friends, helping her take care of her three kids and chauffering her places because she enjoyed it. Talking about her friend made her think of the future and how neat it would be to have "Visual Telephones" to talk to each other. "R" had some issues with his employer not laying him off the right way, so he couldn't get onto the union hire list. Both of us boys were doing well in school. There was also a chance that "R" might get a job at the Army Depot next to Hermiston as a Fireman. Years later Phillip worked there in Security guarding chemical weapons. There was also a chance of getting a gas station to run, possibly on the Oregon Coast.
Mom finally went to the health club in Hermiston with a friend. Then she kept plugging away at her job cleaning up the retirement home. But in a good twist of fate Mom got a better job as a sales girl at Burnham's Department Store in Hermiston. At the time that was one of two stores that anyone who was somebody shopped at. The biggest news to come out of this time frame was Mom and "R" going to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho and getting married a lot earlier than planned.
We enjoyed Christmas 1980 and started 1981 with the mumps. Mom started looking for work because she felt bad that "R" was supporting us. Mat had his 5th birthday and a party at Happy Joe's Pizza in Hermiston. We also spent time hanging out with friends while Mom and "R" got "loose", as she put it. And "R" asked Mom an important question. Hmm, wonder what that could have been? We also spent time with family and Mom got to see The Outlaws and .38 Special live in Portland. We got a dog too, her name was Sissy.
We all got to go rollerskating and us boys went Trick-or-Treating on Halloween. Mom also spent a lot of time sick, but didn't use as much sick leave. She also planned out her Christmas shopping because she wanted to make it the best Christmas yet. Mom mentions Ronald Reagan winning the Presidential Election and admits to feeling depressed but doesn't know why. Mom also spent time looking for a new job in Hermiston because her job in Echo was quickly becoming less than desirable.
Mom came back from the concert in Yakima then went to Robin's baby shower. She got Robin a car seat. We also went to our Grandpa's so Mom could introduce him to "R". It seemed to go really well. Mom was also looking for work and a place to live in Hermiston because Echo was getting to her. In the biggest news we got a new car. A 1975 VW Dasher. Mom was in love with this car even though she was paying about $40 more per month than she anticipated.
Mom's new relationship had a bit of a rocky patch in the beginning but in the end things worked out. Besides, she got to go to the Oregon Jam 1980! Mom was also hoping to get her divorce pushed through and then moving somewhere far away from Hermiston. But, we spent a lot of time in "R"s boat on the river and Mom really seemed to like being around him.
Mom was really getting into her new job, she especially liked making money. It was spring time in Hermiston which meant a lot of wind and rain. She also spent a lot of time riding her bike around town getting exercise and enjoying the nicer days when the were available.
May 6, 1979 - May 25, 1979 We start with getting rid of our dog Leo and end with an anniversary, their 5th wedding anniversary. Mom starts and ends a different job, this time at the drive-in theater in Hermiston. She was also making big plans for the upcoming year. So money was good for the time being. Mom also wrote a couple of poems, one for our grandparents and one for our dad.
April 9, 1979 - April 16, 1979 The weather was starting to warm up and we moved to Hermiston. We finally got our tax refund and a steady paycheck coming in again. We were living with the grandparents too so getting caught up on bills and saving for our own place was easier. Plus Mom had a "dream" of a place she'd like to rent so in all things were looking up!
November 16 - December 6, 1977 Mom started this one with an announcement from Aunt Shannon. A new cousin was on the way! Mom hoped for a girl but it ended up being a boy, our cousin Keith (obviously several months later, we'll get to it). Then Mom prepared for Phillip's third birthday party. She also mentioned her worries about what smoking will eventually do to her. Phillip's third birthday happened on a Tuesday and that Thursday was Thanksgiving it was celebrated in Hermiston where we "feasted on everything under the sun". Gramma Cornwell was always a great cook. Mat's trouble with bronchitis started around this time and there was talk of moving back to Pendleton.
January 16, 1977 - April 22, 1977 This episode starts out with a new car (a 1967 Chevy Malibu Chevelle) but it goes back and we end up car-less. Mom also has a quick stint cutting rotten spots out of potatoes at Lamb-Weston, I assume in Hermiston but there were a lot of Lamb-Weston plants in that area back then so it could have been one of several places. We end up moving to Ione, OR to live with Mom's friend Robin (the same one who comments on this website. Hi Robin!), and from the descriptions it almost sounds like a commune. Mom and Robin then start going back to school with plans on going to college afterward. Plus, Mom spends a lot of time hanging out at the local tavern. Enjoy!
