A (relatively) in-depth analysis of British Rock band 10cc in just under fifteen minutes. From 1972 to 1978, 10cc had five consecutive UK top-ten albums: Sheet Music (1974), The Original Soundtrack (1975), How Dare You! (1976), Deceptive Bends (1977) and Bloody Tourists (1978). 10cc also had twelve singles reach the UK Top 40, "Rubber Bullets" (1973), "I'm Not in Love" (1975) and "Dreadlock Holiday" (1978). "I'm Not in Love" was their breakthrough worldwide hit, and is known for its innovative backing track. In 1976, due to artistic disagreements, Godley and Creme left the band and became a duo act. Stewart left the band in 1995. Since 1999, Gouldman has led a touring version of 10cc.In this episode I am in conversation with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

The uprising appears to be just getting started. Farmers are desperately fighting back for the sake of their livelihoods which are under attack by globalist climate policies as well as for the food supply of Europe and beyond as famine creeps up on humanity, all by design. We know well at this point that the purpose for this manufactured crisis is to force us onto carbon credits attached to CBDCs bringing about rations of poison foods in 15 Minute Cities as travel is halted. Add in World War 3 false flags and fear and we have the perfect crisis for the World Economic Forum's Great Reset. Farmers are standing up in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Poland, France (where they've gridlocked Paris) and Belgium among several other countries. If people do not take these warnings seriously, they will be enslaved by a new technocratic order and it won't be easy to escape once the walls close in. Stay tuned for more from WAM! ++++++++++Song-Tipps zur Folge++++++++++ "Donna", "The Dean And I", "Rubber Bullets", "Wall Street Shuffle", "Worst Band In The World", "Hotel", "Silly Love", "Somewhere In Hollywood", "Une Nuit A Paris", "I'm Not In Love", "Blackmail", "The Second Sitting For The Last Supper", "Life Is A Minestrone", "I'm Mandy, Fly Me", "Art For Art's Sake", "Good Morning Judge", "The Things We Do For Love", "Dreadlock Holiday"

Last September, Mahsa-Jina Amini, a twenty-two-year-old woman from the Kurdish region of Iran, died while in the custody of Iran's notorious "morality police." During the funeral in her hometown of Saghez, which was to become the epicenter of the nationwide protests in Iran, women took off their headscarves, chanting ‘Women Life Freedom', a slogan which became an iconic chant both within Iran and beyond. Images of young women protesters openly taking off their headscarves and burning them sent the unmistakable message to the ruling clerics that they could no longer impose their draconian and nonsensical laws on women and girls in Iran. Throughout the country, in the schools, universities, and streets young people became the leaders of protests calling for an end to the oxymoronic "Islamic republic.“ But, as predicted, the brutality employed by the regime's security apparatus to suppress the protests at any cost took on epic proportions. Over 500 protesters have reportedly been killed so far, including 70 children. In addition, to this day four protesters have been executed by the state, with many more also facing the death sentence. Hundreds of protesters were also blinded by Metal Pellets and Rubber Bullets. Furthermore, over the past six months, human rights organizations have documented the pervasive use of torture and abuse of detained protestors. A newly released report by Amnesty International, for example, reveals that the Iranian authorities have, among other torture methods, used sexual violence against imprisoned children. Amnesty International's Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Diana Eltahawy, has said that "Iran's violence against children exposes a deliberate strategy to crush the vibrant spirit of the country's youth and stop them from demanding freedom and human rights.” Professor Shahrzad Mojab, who is our guest today, says that much of the push for the current protests has come from young people, who are more aware than previous generations of women's issues thanks to social media. "They have their own powerful reason for wanting a change of regime: a desire for a better future." Professor Shahrzad Mojab is a scholar, teacher, and activist, and she's internationally known for her work on the impacts of war, displacement, and violence upon women's learning and education. Malihe Razazan spoke with her about the protest movement, the islamization of the education system as well as the role of young women in the protests, and started by asking her to talk about the genesis of the slogan "Women Life Freedom," and how it encapsulates the spirit and objectives of the protests in Iran.
'I am Woman' still resonates around the world. In this episode, meet Ray Burton - the man who co wrote it. Ray is a very talented singer songwriter now living on the Gold Coast, and here he tells his story. 10CC were a major part of the soundtrack of the seventies with massive hits like I'm Not in Love, Dreadlock Holiday and Rubber Bullets. Founding member Graham Gouldman also wrote classics like Bus Stop (The Hollies) For Your Love (The Yardbirds) and No Milk Today (Herman's Hermits). He chats on the eve of 10CC's Australian tour. Police have used rubber bullets to disperse protesters barricading several roads from Seshego to Polokwane in Limpopo. Protesters used stones, and burning tires to close the roads. Malls and other local businesses at Seshego Circle centre remain shut. Some business owners in the area say they are running at a loss due to the shut-down. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC reporter, Mahlatse Phaladi.
Born on 10 May 1946 in Manchester, Graham was given his first guitar at the age of 11 and started playing with local bands at 15. He received early encouragement to develop his musical talent from his mother Betty and father Hymie, who also contributed with suggested lyrics and song titles. Graham played with various Manchester bands before forming The Mockingbirds in 1965 (with Kevin Godley on drums), and when the record label Columbia rejected Graham's first single composition for the band, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The song, For Your Love, became a huge hit for The Yardbirds. Working by day in a men's outfitters shop and playing by night with his semi-professional band, Graham went on to write a string of hits, such as Pamela, Pamela for Wayne Fontana, For Your Love, Evil Hearted You and Heart Full of Soul (The Yardbirds), Bus Stop and Look Through Any Window (The Hollies), No Milk Today and Listen People (Herman's Hermits), and Tallyman for Jeff Beck. In 1972, along with Eric Stewart, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, he formed 10cc and enjoyed a string of Top 10 hits, including three No 1s – Rubber Bullets, I'm Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday – along with Donna (No 2), Art For Art's Sake and Good Morning Judge (both reaching No 5), The Things We Do For Love and I'm Mandy Fly Me (6), and The Wall Street Shuffle (10). It's the enduring popularity of these tracks, along with others such as Bridge To Your Heart from Graham's time in Wax with the late Andrew Gold and songs from film soundtracks including Animalympics, that led to the formation of Heart Full of Songs. Needless to say, the band also features tracks from Graham's acclaimed solo albums, And Another Thing, Love And Work, Play Nicely And Share and 2020's Modesty Forbids.
Protesters who have participated in demonstrations in Portland are familiar with rubber bullets, pepper balls, teargas canisters, and other kinetic impact projectiles (KIPs). Just last week, the city agreed to a $75,000 settlement with a protester who says he was hit multiple times with 'FN 303 less-lethal' projectiles during the 2020 protests. Freelance journalist Linda Rodriguez McRobbie has been looking into the history of the use of these devices by law enforcement. She joins us to talk about what she found.

Georgia Fort reports:Fencing and barricades came down from around the Hennepin County government center Tuesday. While downtown Minneapolis may appear to be returning to normal in the wake of Derek Chauvin's conviction, for some protestors things will never be the same.19 year old Victor Ramierez Bustamente is one of several who were injured at recent protests.“The doctor said I will probably have to see a plastic surgeon because I have a fracture in my face,” he said.Bustamente was struck with what's called a “less lethal munition” while demanding justice for Daunte Wright outside of the Brooklyn Center Police department. In order to disperse crowds, law enforcement used pepper spray, flash-bangs, rubber bullets and tear gas. The tear gas not only affected protestors, but families living in apartments across the street. Doctors at the University of Minnesota have published new research showing the lasting negative health impacts of tear gas and rubber bullets. Erika Kaske, lead author on the project, says the research was inspired by witnessing law enforcement's response to protests after George Floyd's death. “We wanted to quantify the impact these weapons had on our communities' health,” she said. “We found that 89 people required professional medical care due to their injuries from less lethal weapons”Kaske says researchers observed a high rate of both head injuries and respiratory injuries in protestors. They concluded that “less-lethal weapons” are “not appropriate for crowd control.” Kaske says her team plans to use its findings to support policy changes that would improve public health and safety.

Soldiers in Myanmar have used rubber bullets against protesters in the city of Mandalay, as the military junta tries to quell resistance to its rule. This is my ninth interview, recorded on Thursday, June 15th, 2020. International protests following the murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery have dominated recent news coverage. However, the peaceful demonstrations' character, purpose, and scale have been miscommunicated. Birthed out of his frustration, Arthur Maxwell Powell II created this podcast to have direct conversations with protestors from Las Vegas, NV to Washington, D.C. Check it out here: https://anchor.fm/whyweprotest Thank you for listening! Main questions: How do you define “protest”? Why is protesting important? Why did YOU decide to protest? How did you prepare for protesting? What happened on the way to, during, and after your protesting experience? Has mainstream media and major news corporations reported on protests accurately? How so? What can we do to end systemic racism in our society? What keeps you hopeful that our descendants will line in a better world? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/whyweprotest/message

On Thursday, Philadelphia City Council is expected to pass a ban police officers’ use of tear gas, rubber bullets and other “less lethal munitions” against protesters. The city’s police department already put a moratorium on these tactics after police clashed with racial justice demonstrators in late May and early June. That policy was put to the test Monday night when violence erupted in response to the death of Walter Wallace, a Black man who was shot and killed by police in the city's Cobb's Creek neighborhood. Darryl C. Murphy of WHYY’s PlanPhilly and WHYY reporter Ximena Conde covered more than six hours of public hearings on the bill, and join us to explain why residents and some city council members pushed to make that ban law.
Photo: Carla GreenIn what ways does collaboration strengthen the stories we tell? In this bonus episode, Catherine Saint Louis and Carla Green talk about a recent collaboration for Telescope, a podcast that tells stories about people living through COVID. Both our guests work for podcast production company Neon Hum, Catherine as Senior Editor and Carla as Producer. In the episode we’ll be discussing, “Rubber Bullets.” Catherine reported this story about Derrick Sanderlin and Carla was her editor. The story follows how Derrick--a man who had volunteered to work with the San Jose Police Department about implicit bias-- found himself trying to de-escalate tensions with the same police department during a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest and was shot with rubber bullets. We talk about how Catherine and Carla divided work, why trust is so important in collaborations, how details sometimes need to be separated from the dramatic arc of the story, how music can affect a listener and why one might choose not to use it, and how showing our humanness when we tell another’s story might be an essential piece to the story itself.Carla Green is a Neon Hum producer and journalist. Before coming to Neon Hum, she was the managing producer of the KCRW podcast UnFictional, where she reported and produced a bunch of different stories, including one where she trailed a juggalo across the country on a Greyhound bus. Since she moved to Los Angeles in 2016, she’s covered the city’s homelessness crisis in stories for radio, podcasts, and print.Catherine Saint Louis is the senior editor of podcasts for Neon Hum Media, an L.A. based podcast house founded by Jonathan Hirsch. Her latest podcast that she's edited is Smoke Screen: Fake Priest, a wild story about a man who pretended to be a priest for 30 years, stealing people's money and their faith. Fake Priest is a Neon Hum original as is Telescope, a podcast that tells stories about people living through COVID and later in our first season, the twin pandemics of racism and COVID. This year, she also edited Murder on the Towpath, an eight-episode podcast set in 1964 that features two women who never met but whose lives become linked one of them is killed. Telling someone else’s story presents a host of pleasures and challenges. In this episode, we interview Catherine Saint Louis, senior editor of podcasts for Neon Hum Media, about “Rubber Bullets,” a podcast episode released on Telescope in early July 2020, about a man who had guided implicit bias workshops for the San Jose Police Department for years, then found himself trying to de-escalate the same police department at a Black Lives Matter protest. He was shot in the groin with a rubber bullet. We talk with Catherine about the process of creating the episode from conception to execution. We discuss how she considers the interview process to be “a journey” that the interviewer and interviewee embark on together, and how Catherine was able to move beyond the facts of Derrick’s story to deliver the heart of it by drawing on her own humanity. Derrick Sanderlin was well-acquainted with the San Jose police department – he volunteered his time to train police on implicit bias. Then, he found himself at a protest where that very same police department was indiscriminately firing rubber bullets at the crowd. Derrick stepped up to try to deescalate the situation – and found that it was impossible. This episode is a real departure for us! After receiving an incredible email from Tanya Smith and her sister Lindy, both from Melbourne, Australia, Sean and Paul were bowled over by the fresh perspectives and alternative take on how 10cc's output might be viewed by women. We're blokes, and we simply hadn't realised that as blokes, we've been thinking and listening through a very different filter! We found this discussion absolutely fascinating, and we really hope you do too. Like us, Lindy and Tanya are big fans of 1970s 10cc and the first three Godley and Creme albums. The podcast helped to shed some light on the later material, and also raised some questions for them. For example, why aren't we hearing the same 'pop genius' in Donna and the other 1950s pastiches? Surely the more 1960s-influenced Hotlegs material, as sung by Kevin, is much more worthwhile? Why are there so few female musicians and collaborators? And many more questions besides. Much of this podcast aims to analyse 10cc and Godley and Creme through a finely-focused lens of how Eric, Graham, Lol and Kevin have portrayed women, both lyrically and through album artwork. Some of the recurring female archetypes are really interesting, so we won't spoil the surprise. There's no accusation of sexism here; the band were in many ways simply the product of their culture at the time. Suffice to say that we discuss a huge range of hits and much lesser-known songs, including Donna and Rubber Bullets, I'm Not in Love, Blackmail, Iceberg, Don't Hang Up, Modern Man Blues, Strange Lover, Working Girls, Something Special, Green-eyed Monster, Sandwiches of You, Wedding Bells, Cats Eyes, Cry, Golden Rings and plenty more. Oh, and Consequences of course! Lindy's takedown of the Neanderthal Man promo film is worth its weight in gold! It was also great to hear an Australian perspective on this great band's rise and fall. And what's all this about Hubcap Jenny? Well, you'll just have to wait and see. Hear. I'm sure you'll find this as interesting and refreshing as we did. Apologies and thanks to Karen Piercey too, having 'missed the boat' due to Sean sending his invite to the wrong email address!

In MMOW, which we held and released mid-week out of respect for Blackout Tuesday included our raw reactions to the George Floyd tragedy. In this episode, we continue to support the Black Lives Matter movement, the protests, and the voices that are lobbying for social change. We begin by sharing some stories from the front lines. Actors, writers, producers, and executives from the industry that we cover - they have inspired us, they have endured serious dangers, and they have overcome those risks to speak out and protest for a better world. Though we do have some of our commentary in this show, our goal was to highlight what our heroes have said in response to this horrible tragedy and in their fight for justice. As we say in the episode, we look up to you, we stand with you, we salute you, and we thank you. Although we felt the need to use our platform to further this conversation, we realize that WE need to continue to educate ourselves in this process and further engage ourselves to help so many worthy causes mentioned in this show & beyond. But as we say throughout, we want to hear from you. Your feedback is essential, and we want to continue to learn how best to use our voices throughout this struggle. Please stay safe and encouraged. Yes, we will be resuming our coverage of the film world. Yes, we will continue to cover how Hollywood reacts and supports the BLM movement. And yes, we’ll try to do our jobs and provide you with some entertainment through these tough times. Next week’s movie reviews will include Shirley and Da 5 Bloods, and we’ll continue our ongoing series of Oscar Race Checkpoint, MMO Weekly, etc. But our sincere hope is that this activism holds and persists throughout the calendar to continue this fight for change. As cities nationwide smoulder with rage after a weekend of protests sparked by the death of George Floyd, Floyd’s brother appeals for calm. KCRW looks at how demonstrators and journalists were treated by police, what rights they have, and whether peaceful or violence protests are most effective.
As of the date of publishing this episode, we now know that 2 federal prisoners have died of COVID-19, almost 300 federal prisoners tested positive (a rate 13 times higher than the general population in Canada), 5 penitentiaries are contaminated with COVID-19, 400 prisoners are being held in extreme conditions in medical isolation, and 100s more in cruel, prolonged solitary confinement-like conditions. All visits by families, friends, and volunteers have stopped. Programs have ended and prisoners are not able to make progress on correctional plans. Temporary absences, both escorted and unescorted, have been suspended so progress toward being paroled for many has ceased. Both prisoners and correctional staff are likely worried about contracting the virus. It is little wonder that tensions behind bars have increased. When tensions are high, is it more important to follow the protocols and attempt to de-escalate disputes before relying on force? Was the amount of force described by Mr. Farrier more than was appropriate in the circumstances? If the video tapes confirm that Mr. Farrier had his hands up and was attempting to comply with instructions when he was shot, what accountability and corrective action is appropriate?Should the video tapes of such uses of force be made public?
Since his first appearance in 1939, Batman has undergone a number of changes in his quest to both stay ahead of his enemies and relevant to comic book fans. However, one thing that has remained a constant is his continued use of unique tools and devices for vanquishing his foes. And now, one of those devices is set to make its way into real-life law enforcement. I’m not sure what the Dark Knight called it, but the folks at Wrap Technologies are calling their Kevlar rope shooting device the BolaWrap 100. Just like in the comics, video games, animated series and movies featuring the Caped Crusader, the BolaWrap 100 fires like a 9 mm handgun in propelling an eight-foot long cord at 640 feet-per-second. The Kevlar cord has two metal barbs on each end that attach to the targeted individual and allow the cord to wrap around the torso or legs. The cord is fired from a cartridge, so loading and unloading is similar to a firearm’s magazine or clip. It also features a laser aiming function and is effective from up to 25’. The general idea is for the BolaWrap to detain or restrain a person of interest without the use of firearms, tasers, rubber bullets or physical force. The inventor of the device, who has no known connections to Wayne Enterprises, is Woody Norris – who also developed the LRAD acoustic cannon known for blasting out painful soundwaves over long distances. He got his inspiration from the bolas, which is Spanish for ball, that were used by South American ranchers to help capture straying cattle. A number of law enforcement agencies around the country are testing the devices, with perhaps the most notable being the Los Angeles Police Department. The LAPD is slated to begin a 90-day trial in January.
