Fasting with food may sound like an oxymoron. But according to leading longevity researchers, it's the best, safest & easiest approach to creating the type of "metabolic stress" that triggers the body to start a process of cellular cleaning known for improving not only life span but also healthspan. In the first episode (no. 76) of a two-part series, I'm speaking with Dr. Felicia Stoler -- a registered dietitian and exercise physiologist whose work with the L-Nutra company lead me to try the 5 Day Fast Mimicking Diet. In this episode, we discuss: The research taking place across the globe (at present, 44 clinical trials) all aimed at better understanding how fasting and metabolic stress support longevity Why metabolic stress is so crucial to the process of cellular clean up known as autophagy How the 5 Day Fast Mimicking Diet works What foods are included in the 5 Day Fast Mimicking Diet kits Why fasting with the kit is a better approach to fasting than simply fasting without any food at all The general benefits people report experiencing after the 5 Day Fast Mimicking Diet, including weight loss, reduction in markers of inflammation, reduction in metabolic markers, as well as increased alertness and energy We wrap up this section of our interview with a discussion about the role that protein plays in triggering the nutrient-sensing pathways and why the message to eat more protein may actually be doing more harm than good when it comes to longevity. Next, Felicia and I discuss the program I got to try immediately following my 5-day fast -- the Nutrition for Longevity program. In this next episode (no. 77), we discuss: The company's background and mission to serve as a regenerative form of agriculture Why the Nutrition for Longevity program fits so seamlessly with the 5 Day Fast as a good transition to a more plant-based diet following the fast The environmentally friendly packaging of the shipments and how shipments are at present only intended for a single end-user The various calorie levels and diets available We close out our time together with a brief discussion of Prolon's "Fast Bar" -- a nut-based bar intended for use by individuals who want to extend their time-restricted eating pattern (aka "intermittent fasting) from a metabolic standpoint but would like to have some food during that time. I close out this part of the podcast with my personal thoughts on this experience, including how the food of the Prolon 5 Day Fast Mimicking Diet did lead to a bit of flavor fatigue for me, noting, however, that I found it to be an extremely positive experience and would definitely do it again. I also explain why I felt that the two programs -- the 5 Day Fast Mimicking Diet and Nutrition for Longevity -- worked so well together and why I credit the experience with shifting my eating habits to a more whole food, plant-based eating pattern in a way that nothing else has done for many years. Lastly, I share with listeners that both programs are available for purchase with a 10% discount simply by using the code UNMILLENNIAL at checkout here: Sign up HERE for the 5 Day Fast Mimicking Diet (use code UNMILLENNIAL at checkout) Sign up HERE for the Nutrition For Longevity Program (use code UNMILLENNIAL at checkout) To end the show, I give a brief mention of how my Voxes back and forth with friends about my new favorite hairbrush dryer lead to a discussion of favorite hairsprays. I came to love my favorite -- L'Oreal Elnett -- after years of purchasing more expensive products that always seemed to result in clogged nozzles with either a wasted partially used bottle OR large gloppy droplets of hairspray. The L'Oreal product never has either problem. As always, if you have thoughts on this topic or others you'd like to hear on the show, send me an email OR message me on social media. Conversation 49:  The Story, Journey and Passion of Dr. Felicia Stoler, DCN, MS, RD, FACSM, FAND “One of the most important things for us to remember is being grounded. There is still more for us to know. Yes, we can be the nutrition experts, there is always more to learn because science changes. It doesn’t change in terms of being right and wrong, but we learn more.” - Dr. Felicia Stoler, DCN, MS, RD, FACSM, FAND My conversation today is with America's Health & Wellness ExpertTM Felicia Stoler. At the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Meeting’s expo, there was this eye catching booth with tons of pink with a vibrant and interactive woman manning the booth. This is where I met Felicia Stoler, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Exercise Physiologist, Author and Journalist, as well as co-creator of Regular Girl, prebiotic fiber and probiotics for women, which is what brought her to Iowa. As I talked with her more, I quickly realized I needed to do a podcast with her and learn more about her journey, not only with her extensive education background but with the expertise as an on-air talent, as well as other forms of media. I learned a lot during our conversation and I hope you do too. Please enjoy my conversation with Felicia. What should you eat when you want to get fit?Maybe you want six-pack abs. Or, perhaps you want to get stronger. What should you eat to support your fitness goals? First, start with eating real foods that are close to what you find in nature. You don't have to count the grams of everything. Make sure you have lean protein, fruit, vegetables, healthy carbs and smart fats every day. Avoid processed foods. Second, assess your fitness goals. Do you want to increase or decrease your weight? Your goal will impact your food requirements each day. Don't add a protein shake or bar just because you exercised. Third, you don't want to exercise completely fasted. You need some nutritious carbohydrates to fuel the workout early in the morning. Have a piece of fruit, or a glass of pure fruit or vegetable juice. The glucose gives you energy right away. Adding fiber, fat and protein will take longer to digest. Additionally, alcohol is closer to fat than protein for your body. Cut back on booze and mixers if you have caloric goals. Finally, use fats and oils to cook your food so it tastes good. You don't have to drink coconut oil each day to get in your healthy fats. In moderation, you can eat the natural fats in your food, like the fat in your ham or skin from your chicken. Listen as Dr. Felicia Stoler joins Melanie Cole, MS, to discuss how to eat to support your fitness goals.

An amazing 41 percent of those on a diet gain back more weight than they lost in five years. Recent studies indicate this is due to a power play by the dieter’s brain. That’s why contestants on “The Biggest Loser” drop hundreds of pounds while on the show, but struggle in their real lives to keep the pounds off. Felicia Stoler, author of “Living Skinny in Fat Genes,” says weight loss struggles may have nothing to do with being lazy or lack of willpower. The latest research suggests the brain has a body weight span that is hard wired. In other words this span is pre-set and designed to stop what the brain perceives as possible starvation. The exact amount is different for everyone and is determined by genetics and living conditions. If you notice your body weight fluctuating over the years, at a greater weight than you want, your brain is simply telling your body to store more fat. Of course, storing additional fat makes you weigh more. Dieting can send a signal to your brain, causing the brain to hold on to extra weight, fighting off the effects of potential starvation. The fact is brain weight, what your brain wants you to weigh, tends to be more than you would want. The brain actually fights with your body helping to pack on those extra unhealthy pounds. On Late Night Health, Stoler shares her thoughts to get your brain to focus your brain weight correctly. Learning how to stop giving in to cravings and dropping bad eating habits is just the start. She explains how your genes take control in predetermining your weight. Research published in the journal Nature found there are 49 genes that regulate abdominal fat. This genetic pre-disposition is inherited from your parents. Stoler shares her secrets to re-set the brain weight mechanism, with advice from her book “Living Skinny in Fat Genes”. air date: 10/14/16

This is especially recommended for men and teen boys, largely because they are not consuming enough produce. Cut added sugars. The report recommends cutting sugar intake to 10% of your daily calorie intake. This means cutting added sugar from coffee and limiting sweets. No need to limit cholesterol. There is no longer a limit of 300 mg of cholesterol per day, but the report recommends looking at what foods are providing your cholesterol. Omelets and avocados are preferred to cheeseburgers and pizza. Felicia Stoler, PhD, discusses these new Dietary Guidelines and how it may impact the way you feed yourself and your family.
