If your body already has powerful systems designed to repair and protect you, are your daily habits helping switch them on... or working against them?Dr. Valter Longo is a professor and director of the Longevity Institute at USC, one of the world's leading researchers on aging, nutrition, and lifespan, and the author of The Longevity Diet and his latest book, Fasting Cancer. His path into this work is an unusual one. He started as a jazz performance major, chasing rock guitar, and walked away the moment they told him he had to direct a marching band. What pulled him toward aging traces back to being five years old, in the room when his grandfather died, and a question that lodged in him and never left: what if little things can make such a big difference? That question became a career. Longo walks Dr. Michael Gervais through the science of living to 110, a number drawn from two real people he followed personally, and the trade-off at the heart of aging: the body can pour its energy into growth and reproduction, or into protection and repair, but not both at once. From there he challenges one of the loudest narratives in health and performance today, the push for high protein, laying out why he believes most people are eating far more than the research supports, and what a safer balance actually looks like. The conversation moves into the work Longo is best known for: fasting-mimicking diets, why he says fasting on its own doesn't mean anything, and how cycles of eating less may activate the body's own repair and regeneration. He and Mike explore what this could mean for cancer, where Longo is careful and precise about what the science does and doesn't yet show, and they close on what it takes to unlearn a foundational belief when the evidence stops holding up. Mike opens up about how this conversation pushed against a narrative he'd carried his whole life, and why he wanted to have it anyway. In this conversation, we explore:Why aging and cancer are deeply connected, and what that means for preventionThe trade-off between growth and protection that shapes how we ageWhy Longo believes most people eat far too much proteinWhat a safer, mostly plant-based protein balance looks likeWhy fasting on its own is a meaningless word, and what to do insteadHow fasting-mimicking cycles may trigger the body's repair and regenerationWhat the science does and doesn't yet show about food and cancerWhat it takes to unlearn a belief when the evidence stops holding upIf you've ever wondered whether your daily choices are quietly helping or hurting the systems meant to keep you well, this conversation offers a science-backed place to start thinking about your health and lifestyle.A note from the team: This episode doesn't exist in a vacuum. Over the last several months, Mike has had numerous conversations on health, nutrition with world-renowned experts like Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, Dr. Jason Fung, and Dr. Tim Spector, among others. These are all rich conversations that at times hold conflicting advice and guidance. We encourage you to listen to all of them, and as always, consult your doctor on what practices are best for you. Health, nutrition, and longevity are all deeply intertwined with living a life of full potential, and we're committed to having these great conversations with world experts on these subjects. Today I'm joined by Professor Valter Longo to unpack what actually slows biological ageing, and what most women are getting wrong about fasting, protein, and diet. We explore the difference between chronological age and biological age, how biological ageing is measured, and why chasing extreme fasting or high-protein trends may quietly undermine long-term health. Professor Longo shares decades of research behind the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), explains why most popular fasting protocols may increase cardiovascular risk, and outlines the dietary patterns consistently linked to the world's longest-living populations. This conversation cuts through longevity hype with evidence from human trials, centenarian studies, and 100 years of ageing research, offering a grounded, practical framework for improving healthspan without extremes. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN • The real difference between chronological age and biological age – and how it's measured • Why blood biomarkers may be more reliable than epigenetic ageing clocks right now • What organ-specific ageing clocks reveal about hidden health risks • How long it actually takes to activate meaningful autophagy in humans • Why most intermittent fasting protocols may increase heart disease risk • The science behind the 5-day Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) • FMD vs water fasting: gut health, muscle preservation, and safety • Why skipping breakfast is linked to higher cardiovascular mortality • The optimal daily eating window for longevity (and why 12 hours matters) • How often to use FMD for longevity, metabolic health, and disease prevention • Why excess protein may accelerate ageing and disease risk • How much protein humans actually need for longevity • The ideal macronutrient balance for healthspan and lifespan • How nutrition consistently outperforms exercise for lifespan extension • Practical longevity habits around sleep, stress, and lifestyle timing Timestamps 00:00 Intro: Biological Age vs Chronological Age 04:03 Organ-Specific Ageing: Why One Age Score Can Be Misleading 06:15 Autophagy Explained: How Long It Really Takes in Humans 08:59 The Longevity Diet & Fasting Mimicking Diet Explained 11:26 Why Most Fasting Protocols May Be Harmful Long-Term 16:58 Skipping Breakfast, Cholesterol & Heart Disease Risk 18:36 Water Fasting vs FMD: Gut Health, Microbiome & Muscle Loss 35:03 Protein Intake Myths: Muscle, Ageing & Disease Risk 42:46 Sleep, Stress & Lifestyle Factors That Extend Healthspan VALUABLE RESOURCES A BIG thank you to our sponsors who make the show possible: • MitoQ NAD+
STOP intermittent fasting if you think it automatically keeps you young. In this episode, you'll learn why short-term fasting results can mislead long-term aging outcomes, and how duration, frequency, refeeding, and protein intake determine whether fasting supports longevity or quietly accelerates decline. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Valter Longo, one of the world's leading longevity researchers with over 30 years of experience studying aging, nutrition, and disease prevention. Dr. Longo is the Director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California's Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and the Director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at IFOM, the Italian Foundation for Cancer Research Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan. He is the author of the bestselling book The Longevity Diet and was named one of TIME Magazine's 50 most influential people in health care for his research on fasting-mimicking diets. Together, Dave Asprey and Dr. Longo explain why many people focus too heavily on short-term effects and extrapolate them incorrectly across a lifetime. They break down how intermittent fasting differs biologically from multi-day fasting, why five-day fasting cycles trigger deeper cellular changes, and how insulin, IGF-1, mTOR, and growth hormone shape aging, regeneration, and disease risk over time. The conversation covers protein and amino acid intake, muscle preservation, frailty risk, and the tradeoffs between strength, function, and longevity. They explore ketosis, fasting-mimicking diets, stem cell activation, mitochondrial function, neuroplasticity, and why equilibrium and cycling matter more than constant restriction. Dave and Valter also discuss supplements, nootropics, creatine, carnivore-style eating, metabolism, sleep optimization, and how AI may eventually personalize fasting and nutrition based on individual biology rather than population averages. You'll learn: • Why short-term fasting benefits do not predict long-term longevity • How fasting duration changes gene expression and cellular regeneration • The difference between intermittent fasting and multi-day fasting • How protein and amino acids influence mTOR, IGF-1, and aging • Why muscle, strength, and longevity must be balanced, not maximized • When ketosis overlaps with fasting and when it does not • Why supplements can disrupt biological equilibrium • How AI could support future personalization in fasting and nutrition Dave Asprey is a four time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. With over 1,000 interviews and 1 million monthly listeners, The Human Upgrade is the top podcast for people who want to take control of their biology, extend their longevity, and optimize every system in the body and mind. There were two reasons why Dr. Valter Longo was featured so prominently in my longevity book Evigt Ung (2022).First, if you had to name a single scientific thread running through the history of longevity research, calorie restriction is hard to beat. And few have done more to modernize and translate that insight into real-world practice than Longo.Second, I hold Valter Longo in the highest regard. I've tried his Fasting-Mimicking Diet (FMD), I've followed his work on The Longevity Diet, and I find his scientific contributions both rigorous and unusually translational. He doesn't just publish papers - he builds systems, tests interventions in clinical trials, and tries to implement science into healthcare. In this conversation, we cover the science, history, and application of fasting, nutrition, and longevity - including new work on cancer, metabolism, and organ regeneration. We also discuss the philosophical and political obstacles that stand in the way of real change. What you'll learn in this episode:✅ The story of Longo's early music career - and why he left it to study aging.✅ How calorie restriction shaped modern longevity science.✅ Why Biosphere 2 and Roy Walford's work was both inspiring and cautionary.✅ The origins and mechanisms of the Fasting-Mimicking Diet.✅ What Longo learned about autophagy, stem cells, and organ regeneration.✅ Why protein intake before and after age 65 should be treated differently.✅ What the media and doctors get wrong about obesity, food, and metabolism.✅ The dangers of high-protein and ketogenic diets.✅ Why Longo is deeply skeptical of TRT, growth hormone, and biohacking shortcuts.✅ How fasting can enhance cancer treatment - and why Longo wrote his new book Fasting Cancer.✅ Why we need a new kind of “digital school” for lifestyle medicine.
Dr. Valter Longo recommends just 12 to 13 hours of daily fasting for most people — not the 16+ hour marathons many self-respecting biohackers swear by. He says going longer every day could backfire, triggering nutrient deficiencies and long-term issues. You may find this podcast surprising, and you may change your diet on the back of it. Dr. Valter Longo is one of the world's leading experts on longevity, fasting, and disease prevention. He's the creator of the Fasting-Mimicking Diet, author of The Longevity Diet, and a pioneer in nutrition-based healthspan research. Follow Dr. Valter Longo on Instagram. June kicks off with important health lessons brought to you by Joel Kahn, MD. How about the relationship between higher testosterone levels in men and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes? A healthier CIMT ultrasound also predicts a lower risk of diabetes, as performed at the Kahn Center. Sauna bathing and better mental health is an interesting research report. The main topic is data that women live longer if they adhere to the Mediterranean Diet. Another paper on the main topic reports that obese type 2 diabetics have less kidney damage with the MED diet enriched with olive oil. Finally, Dr. Kahn discusses the version of this diet taught by Valter Longo, Ph.D., called the Longevity Diet. There is a wealth of important information this week.
Dr. Robert Lustig is Professor of Pediatric Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco. He is the author of "Fat Chance: Beating the Odds Against Sugar, Processed Food, Obesity, and Disease" and "The Hacking of The American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains". In this episode of Causes or Cures, Dr. Eeks chats with Dr. Valter Longo about his latest research on the fasting-mimicking diet (FMG) and how it has been shown in studies to reduce biological age and disease risk. In great detail, he describes the fasting-mimicking diet and its components while explaining how it was tested in clinical trials for its effect on biological age and disease risk. Dr. Longo describes the difference between biological age and chronological age and how he and his team measured biological age in the studies. Not attributing the benefits of the fasting-mimicking diet to weight loss alone, Dr. Valter offers theories for how it reduces biological age. Importantly, he comments on the controversial fasting study that suggests 8-hour-time-restricted eating is linked to a 91% higher risk of death from heart disease and closes by telling us what he thinks is the best fasting protocol and why. Dr. Longo is a professor of gerontology and biological sciences and director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California, a leading center for research on aging and age-related diseases. He also serves as the Director of the Longevity and Cancer Program at the Institute of Molecular Oncology in Milan, Italy. He is author of the internationall best-selling book, The Longevity Diet. Holding a PhD in biochemistry from UCLA, his research focuses on the mechanisms of aging, including dietary and genetic interventions to slow biological aging. Read more about him here. What's the key to longevity? According to Valter Longo and his bestselling book, The Longevity Diet, it's a combination of fitness and a mostly plant-based diet. That in itself isn't groundbreaking by any means, but what is unique about Longo's approach is the regular fasting element. In today's episode, Matt and Doug walk through the tenets of Longo's philosophy, and Matt shares his recent experience completing a 5-day Prolon fast.

This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens, ButcherBox, and Rupa Health. Fasting has numerous proven benefits to optimize health. It can help reduce inflammation, brain fog, and insulin resistance. It can also increase energy and bone density, activate autophagy—the process of cleaning out damaged cells—and reduce the signs of aging. The food we eat has an amazing ability to heal, but the timing of when we eat or abstain from eating can also have profound impacts on our health. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Valter Longo, Dave Asprey, and Dr. Jason Fung about the mechanisms behind fasting, why most of us can benefit from fasting, and how fasting can be a useful tool in cancer treatment. Dr. Valter Longo is an internationally recognized leader in the field of aging studies and related diseases. Valter is the author of an extraordinary book, The Longevity Diet. The culmination of 25 years of research on aging, nutrition, and disease across the globe, it provides an easy-to-understand, accessible, and implementable road map to living well longer through improved nutrition.
