Sherry & Theresa travel from last episode's conversation about separating from feminine energy into identifying with male energy and coming into balance with both. They listed masculine qualities and talked about how they show up in different circumstances. This conversation would not be complete without mentioning notable women in history and female superheroes who reveal, to varying degrees, how powerful these two energies can be when understood & well-balanced. Since the conversations are centered on feminine & masculine energies, it brings up other models of duality. Below are different ways of expressing the nature of what it is to live in a dichotomous world. They are deliberately left unlinked & undefined so you can follow the breadcrumbs under your own direction. Concepts covered that may have inspired curiosity to pursue deeper exploration, study & understanding: Shiva & Shakti Sthira & Sukha Ida & Pingala Yin & Yang Purusha & Prakriti If these dual energies intrigue you, there is a ton of information on the Web. Who doesn't love Wonder Woman? We all love the mighty Amazon! So join us for a fun and lively discussion with writer Teresa Jusino as we talk about this matriarchal superhero and the film which tells the story of her creation, "Professor Marston and the Wonder Women." William Moulton Marston, the creator of Wonder Woman, was a Harvard psychologist who co-created the lie detector. With his two life partners, psychologist Elizabeth Holloway Marston and psychology student Olive Byrne, the trio pursued a stable polyamory lifestyle and a continual quest of spread the gospel of matriarchy to the world. Elizabeth was a gifted scholar in her own right and created the lie detector alongside William. Olive was also a student of psychology and part of a lineage of Suffragettes-- her aunt was Margaret Sanger. Elizabeth and Olive had their own amazing relationship with each other which lasted several decades after William's death. An incredible story behind the creation of an incredible hero... Wonder Woman!

Elizabeth says: I'm a marketer and communicator working in Toronto tech. I've written novels all my life. In 2012, I gave a Tedx Talk about women, leadership and how superhero stories about women model new ways to live powerful lives. At the time, I thought Daenerys' and Black Widow's stories showed that we were evolving our conception of what was possible for powerful women. Fast forward to 2019 when I watched both characters sacrificed in the same week to serve male interests. There's so much more to do. That talk had a sleeper effect on my life: in September 2014, I began work on my own fantasy-action superhero saga. Set in Toronto, it draws on my own experiences in tech and living in a cosmopolitan city. With time, it's grown from one book to five. I'm so excited to share it! And should probably do some thinking about my author wardrobe. In honour of the release of Birds of Prey, and with the Oscars having literally just passed, we thought it was time to honour the ladies of the Movie World. Now we could have been obvious and done something like the TOP 10 Female Superheroes. A bit too predictable, so we'll leave that for another time.We thought it far more appropriate to do the TOP 10 Female Ensemble Movies. We had one stipulation for what constitutes an "ensemble" and that was three or more big names. So why did we put "Seriously?" on the end of the title? Well... in a world where some of the best talent on the planet is female, what surprised us while compiling our individual TOP 10's was how few movies there were that exhibited this talent as a collective.Don't get us wrong, we like our lists very much, all the movies are good, some are even great, but there is this inescapable feeling that the ladies of hollywood are not ever combined to best effect. Some people might be surprised that certain movies even made our lists, and that's why we couldn't help but put "Seriously". The movies are good yes, but in some cases the title/IP almost feels like it doesn't properly reflect the prowess of the best in hollywood.Sad to say this as we exit Oscar season and as Birds of Prey is in theatres, but Hollywood needs to do more of these movies, and the movies need to be of an even higher calibre than what we count down here to truly reflect the talent. Two women making comic books more diverse speak to Kim Chakanetsa about working in a male-dominated industry and why they're so keen to represent women and minorities in comic books. G. Willow Wilson is a novelist and comic writer from the USA. She's best known for relaunching MS Marvel, starring Kamala Khan, a 16 year old Muslim female superhero, who takes over the mantle after Carol Danvers becomes Captain Marvel. Willow has fought back against claims that diverse characters damage comic book sales and continues to represent Muslim and female characters in her work. Nicola Scott is an Australian comic book artist who has illustrated several well known female superheroes, including Wonder Woman and Birds of Prey featuring Harley Quinn, which will be adapted for film in 2020. She also co-created the Black Magick series, about young witches. She says women working on comics add layers of humanity and quality to female characters that men might miss. In this show, we chat to fellow Podcaster Em from Verbal Diorama about female superheroes. We discuss the portrayal of female heroes in movies past, present and future. Em in her signature chatty style, regales the team with her views of the TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She even has some positive thoughts on the much maligned 1992 movie of the same name. We talk about the role of the incredibly powerful women in the X-Men franchise. Em confesses to watching "Arnie" movies under age and the effect Brigitte Nielsen's, Red Sonja had on her, growing up. As this is a show featuring three movie nerds, the conversation sometime veers wildly off topic and we end up discussing Logan and drawing comparisons with Joker. Em gets side tracked by the Iron Giant and Jeff details why he needed three toilet breaks during Captain Marvel. Other topics are the theory that Em's cat might actually be a Flerken! The correct drink to have before Em discusses Buffy and the only good thing in the Fantastic Four movie? After many twists and turns we finally get the show back on course and look forward, with optimism, to the female led movies coming out over the next few years. Thanks Em, for being such a great guest and hope our listeners enjoy the show.
In this week's show we discuss female superheroes in Comics, Film and Television. Usually women in only depicted as love interests, derivative character such as she-hulk, spider woman, etc, or sexual objects we explore with Morgan Ely other alternatives.

Captain Marvel is the latest adaptation, and the perfect Rosetta Stone to decipher what makes a female hero tick. Melissa and Jon review the film, discuss common tropes, and define #comicsgate. They also discuss the difference between harassment and critique, and how publishing and politics intersect. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/unboxing-story/support

How obscure can literature trivia get? Dead Sea Scrolls calendars don't mess around, first aliens in stories is a little further back than we thought. They're both in the reeds a little. Nick goes to the AFL finals and is annoyed at the mass of humanity. Karilyn's live reaction to watching the Captain Marvel trailer that is omg, and gushing over Mary Poppins Returns. Good news, bad news: A technical difficulty. Needles are supposed to go in haystacks, not strawberries. Cathay Pacific renames itself after Frankie doesn't show up to work. Karilyn lands a role involving a piano and some Italian dancers, Nick cataclysmically overthinks being given a pass to a film festival screening.

Oh man oh man, we launch from Wonder Woman celebration party to some super heady nerd-plus territory on the future of comic books and comic book movies, the dearth of great entertainment at movie theater, and of course, JOSS FREAKING WHEDON (and Batgirl. It’s happening, y’all). As long as this man is alive and kicking, he will literally destroy his personal health to make us laugh and be entertained in a meaningful way, and Batgirl (and his other projects in the DC universe) will be no different. SPECIAL CROSSOVER EPISODE! If a podcast can have friends, then the Pod People Podcast is one of the best friends that Bombast has. If you don't know, that show has a focus on Young Adult fiction, and for this episode, we cross over with the hosts of Pod People, Emily White and Vic Caswell. We start off the episode with a round of the game show, "Hip Hop Artist or Superhero?". From there, we move on to Matt's homework assignment for the show, which was to get a date and go to the GZA concert, how to pick up chicks while buying tires, and we talk about Phil's novel, "Peter Brown Goes to Boston", and Phil talks about Emily's YA novel, "Elemental", which he just finished reading. We also talk about a tendency of male character in YA to be what girls wished guys were like, and we compare that to unrealistic women characters in superhero comics. If you listen further, you'll find out the reason that Phil needs to go see a Twilight movie in the theater, and you'll hear Mat ramble on about the Bill Murray movie, "What about Bob?". We round out the end of the show with the epic topic, Sexiest Male and Female Superheroes. The topic does derail briefly into a disagreement about Tim Burton's "Batman Returns" (1992). We laugh a lot during this episode, and I hope you enjoy it, dear listener, because we had blast recording it.
