In this episode of Quah (Q & A), Sal, Adam & Justin answer four Pump Head questions drawn from last Sunday's Quah post on the @mindpumpmedia Instagram page. Mind Pump Fit Tip: GET your testosterone levels checked! (1:41) The demonization of fitness is getting more nefarious. (11:46) Casa Bonita, the ultimate restaurant experience. (39:32) Fitness and epigenetics. (43:57) The importance of 3rd party testing with your favorite protein powder. (46:22) Everything is amplified today. (47:57) Why are electric vehicles piling up? (53:26) Shout out to Brandon Harris. (55:50) Hiya is an excellent multivitamin for kids. (56:14) #Quah question #1 - From watching YouTube Mind Pump clips and Squat University, I realized a wider stance with toes pointed outwards substantially adds depth to my squat. How can I tell if I'm masking ankle/hip mobility issues or if it's just my anatomy? (58:05) #Quah question #2 - How does a supinated, pronated, and neutral grip change or affect an exercise? (1:02:01) #Quah question #3 - I am someone who can't connect to their glute muscles very well when I squat so would it be better to go lighter on the movement and work on the mind-to-muscle connection or just continue to go heavy? Will I still see gains if I drop the weight? (1:08:20) #Quah question #4 - In a recent episode, you guys mentioned avoiding processed foods as in anything in a wrapper or package. Does this mean that while eating a whole-food diet we would need to avoid Cheese!?

In this podcast, I interview Dr. Aaron Horschig all about lifting injuries, including injury prevention, treatment, and pain management. I thought Aaron would be the perfect guest for this topic because he has a book called Rebuilding Milo, which is all about fixing common lifting injuries, whether it's knee pain, back pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain, you name it. Of course, when it comes to injuries, you can kick the can down the road by loading up on NSAIDs and slathering on Icy Hot, but to really deal with injuries and pain correctly, you need to assess and address the root cause, which Aaron helps you do through his book. In case you're not familiar with Aaron, he's the founder of SquatUniversity.com, has a doctorate in physical therapy, and has been involved in olympic weightlifting for over a decade as both a competitor and coach. So, he knows how to approach injury prevention and rehab from the perspective of someone who actually lifts and has experience with professional athletes. In this episode, we discuss injury prevention through technique refinement and load management, the importance of warm-ups, banded joint mobilization, rooting out the cause of pain, why you might not want to ice your injuries, and a lot more. So if you want to learn how to prevent lifting injuries and properly assess and address pain, listen to this interview! Timestamps: 5:40 - Why is your book called “Rebuilding Milo”? 14:34 - Tips for injury prevention and treatment. 16:39 - Why you need to learn proper technique. 17:25 - The importance of load management. 23:06 - The value of filming your lifts. 26:39 - Why warm-ups are more important than you realize. 28:09 - What is banded joint mobilization? 33:20 - How to fix hip impingement. 42:59 - How do you treat injuries? 43:16 - Should you ice your injuries? 50:48 - What else can we do to treat injuries? 56:05 - How to determine the cause of pain through screening. 1:00:51 - Assessing pain and injuries. Dr. Horschig is a physical therapist, a weightlifter, and the author of “The Squat Bible”. The massive growth of his social media account is just one way to quickly recognize that Dr. Horschig is delivering valuable content that people need to hear. In this episode we talk about topics like where your feet should be during a squat, how to design your program, when pain is a problem, and many other topics, my favorite of which was “squat shaming” and how you can avoid being a victim or a bully as it pertains to the topic. In this episode we get to know Dr. Aaron Horschig, the founder of the VERY popular and rapidly growing weightlifting/mobility information source, Squat University! After answering one of our initial questions of why he loves the squat so much, he follows up by explaining how he believes whole heartedly that improving your squat movement/positions alone can significantly widen the base of your athletic pyramid(a pyramid has 3 equal sides so can only grow taller with a bigger base), and how he is driven to empower with simplicity with his new book coming out in March of 2017! We wrap up this powerful hour with what to look out for when using the concept of "knees out" as a cue, and whether or not to turn out the toes in the squat.
