After Oleksandr Usyk defeated Tyson Fury in late 2024 for the heavyweight championship, the Ukrainian boxer held up a sabre that once belonged to the 17th Century Ukrainian Cossack Hetman, Ivan Mapeza, who this episode is dedicated to. Usyk's fortitude spoke to Ukraine's resilience against a larger foe who initiated the type of vainglorious War Tolstoy condemns, with all of his soul, in W&P.Showcasing the weapon was a transcendent moment of Usyk bringing history to Life. This ability is something Tolstoy shares given who often he reaches into the past to make literary points. In W&P, for example, Tolstoy cites the Classical world and more recent influences. He skillfully adapts the famous quote from Voltaire: "If god did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him." The Frenchman also had a well-known correspondence with Catherine II, who some of W&P's characters look to as illustrative of an idealized past. Yet part of her reputation involves keeping so many under serfdom. Voltaire urged her to release her serfs.Quite forgotten is how Voltaire contributed to Mazepa becoming an icon of the Romantic age. Victor Hugo, Lord Byron & Franz List, also elevated Mazepa to a status Tolstoy himself briefly references in his 1857 work “Youth.” Tolstoy wrote that if he reaches the age of 70, he envisions that a lovely young woman could love him as easily as she could love….a Mazeppa.Mazepa was born to a noble Cossack family near Kyiv. His father was a town otaman (leader) and his mother instilled in her son a deep devotion to God and Cossack culture. Mazepa received a European education and served at the Polish royal court. While quite young, he is said to have fallen in love with the wife of a Polish nobleman and to have been punished through being tied to a wild horse and carried back to the Land of the Cossacks, where he was adopted by one of their communities and rose to leader. He was Hetman from 1687 – 1709. Mazepa remains a key figure in Ukrainian-Russian relations given he decided to turn his allegiance to Sweden over the Czar during the Great Northern War. This conflict was fought between Sweden and an anti-Swedish coalition led by Moscow. This intermittent affair lasted about 20 years and involved control over Northern Europe and the Baltics. Sweden initially did well causing Peter to move his troops inward and draw Charles to invade. The conflict made its way to Mazepa's Cossacks, whose status and allegiance greatly changed over the previous generation. Since 1654, many were uneasy allies with the Czar after withdrawing support for Poland. They now felt subject to excessive demands for troops to be used in projects like building canals and fortresses, where they could be worked to sickness and death and used as proverbial “cannon fodder”Thus, in 1708, Mazepa aligned with Charles, giving him 5,000 Cossacks. Mazepa felt he was choosing the lesser of two evils. Later that year, there was a race of belligerents to Mazepa's home city of Baturyn. 20,000 Russian soldiers commanded by Alexander Menshikov overwhelmed this military arsenal and food store. When the city fell, there was this infamous slaughter of the civilian population. A number were tied to makeshift crosses or boards and floated down the local river. The next summer, on June 27, 1709, the armies faced off near Poltava, where Peter & Charles were on-hand directing troops. The Czar prevailed and this turn in history explains why Sweden never became a great power. This battle also had a major role in propelling Russia to their status. Yet that fire in the hearts of Ukrainians for independence was not extinguished over the next few centuries. Today, a Ukrainian state exists which exacts quite the toll on Russian aggression. Ukrainians revere Mazepa for making the best choice he could.Mazepa was excommunicated from the Russian Orthodox Church and Czar Peter also ordered all portraits of the man destroyed. Similarly, Tolstoy, was separated from the Orthodox Church in 1901 through a Church Proclamation. Tolstoy's writing on religion led to the church to declare him as a “false teacher” imbued with “intellectual pride.” This leads me to the second reference to I have found from Tolstoy on Mazppa, which is the book “Life of Tolstoy” by Tolstoy's long-time English friend and translator, Alymer Maude. Maude describes how Tolstoy studied the life of Mazepa upon a friendly wager as a law student.

In Italian American folk practices, saints are at the heart of everything that we do. It's a fine line between religion and spirituality, as these practices, superstitions, healing methods and traditions are older than the Catholic faith itself. How do we view saints? What is their function and how are they helping guide healers in our community?
The prince Kha-em-Waset (lived c.1260 BCE) was a learned man, and an accomplished priest. Centuries after his death, storytellers remembered the prince as a sage and magician. This episode features a discussion focused on equipping behavior analysts with practical strategies for communicating effectively with parents about core behavioral principles. Rick and Doug examine common parent concerns, including misconceptions about reinforcement versus bribery, objections to "rewarding" children for expected behavior, and the short- and long-term effects of yelling and punishment. The conversation explores coercive cycles, habituation to punishment, escalation patterns, and counter control. Rick and Doug also address adolescent behavior through the lens of reinforcement history and motivating operations, emphasizing that teenagers are shaped by contingencies rather than being "broken." Practical communication strategies are provided, including using lay terminology, modeling empathy, setting clear contingencies, and teaching parents replacement strategies for coercive interactions. The content is applied and practice-oriented, supporting behavior analysts in improving parent training and consultation outcomes. A key problem in empirically oriented research, especially inductive and abductive work, is figuring out which theoretical lens or scaffold to apply to uncover novel insights. In other words, which theory should you use? We discuss a few heuristics scholars can draw on to reach a higher level of scholarly maturity, namely disposition, empirical salience, outcome definition, skepticism, and reflexivity. Na ja, vom Lådn is meisdens ned so viel drin, was ich in derre Kadegorie zum såch hab. Leben ehm. Obwohls a Menge Bücher zum Deema gebb dud. Was ich awer verzähl will is a Kino Erlebnis, beziehungsweise a Nachkino-Erlebnis. Un der Film wår selwer a a Buchumsedzung. Vonnem Buch, wu mir echd alle feiern dun, im Lådn. Des Büchle heisd "Mickey 7 - Der letzte Klon" und der Film "Mickey 17". Wahrdscheins, weil sich a grössere Zahl innem Film besser machd. Und des is ja manchmal so a Sach. Nacherd sachd enner vo meine Kumbels eefach blos "Drambb". Und ich so. "Verdammd". S is dann noch al lange, lusdiche Runde worrn. Von mir aus blos kurz, a boar Jährli, nacherd würd kenner so a Drehbuch käff.

The science of behavior has a lesser-known but powerful framework that draws inspiration from physics - behavior dynamics. In this episode, we discuss core concepts such as force, mass, and acceleration as they relate to behavior change, illustrating how behavior is not static but constantly in motion. While valuable, we highlight how traditional steady-state logic can limit our understanding in applied settings, especially where control is minimal. The discussion emphasizes the value of acceleration, bounce, and replication logic as valid indicators of experimental effects through examples from precision teaching and historical insights from Skinner. This episode challenges listeners to reconsider what constitutes strong evidence and invites a broader, more dynamic perspective on data-driven decision-making in practice. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
Let's explore the intricate history between Christianity and witchcraft, tracing how the Church's views on magic and supernatural practices evolved from the early Christian period to the modern day. This lecture unpacks the meaning of 'witchcraft' within a Christian context, revealing how the term came to signify a threat to divine authority. Through scriptural interpretations, the perspectives of early Church Fathers, and medieval theological distinctions between 'white' and 'black' magic, we uncover Christianity's shifting stance—from condemnation and demonology-fuelled witch hunts to ambivalent tolerance of folk practices. We also examine the rise of ceremonial magic traditions, such as Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry, which attempted to harmonise Christian mysticism with esoteric pursuits, and how these traditions influenced contemporary Pagan practices. This video sheds light on the far-reaching impact of these historical interactions, showing how Christian symbolism continues to influence modern Paganism and esotericism. Dive into this fascinating journey through faith, fear, and the ongoing dialogue between Christianity and witchcraft. CONNECT & SUPPORT

ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
This episode delves into the mystical and Masonic legacy of Count Alessandro Cagliostro, focusing on his creation of High Egyptian Freemasonry. Cagliostro, a figure shrouded in mystery and controversy, claimed esoteric knowledge and noble origins, quickly gaining notoriety across Europe as a healer and Freemason. We explore Cagliostro's introduction of the Egyptian Rite in Naples in 1777, which marked a significant departure from traditional Freemasonry by integrating mystical practices and the concept of spiritual and moral transformation. His rites catered to both men and women, incorporating beliefs in theism and the immortality of the soul, and outlined a path for redemption through spiritual, intellectual, and physical restoration. We also cover the specifics of Cagliostro's Masonic rituals, which were designed to elevate practitioners through a series of stages: from spiritual reawakening and intellectual renewal, emphasizing alchemy and theurgy, to achieving a divine connection. These stages culminated in the mastery of esoteric arts, enabling initiates to perform significant theurgical acts. CONNECT & SUPPORT
--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/audiostretto/message

To the New YearWith what stillness at lastyou appear in the valleyyour first sunlight reaching downto touch the tips of a fewhigh leaves that do not stiras though they had not noticedand did not know you at allthen the voice of a dove callsfrom far away in itselfto the hush of the morningso this is the sound of youhere and now whether or notanyone hears it this iswhere we have come with our ageour knowledge such as it isand our hopes such as they areinvisible before usuntouched and still possible- W. S. Merwin, “To the New Year” from Present Company What is the sound of a New Year arriving? For some, it may be the willful crack of a firework or the click of the minute hand. The whisper of a beloved in one's sleeping ear. In W.S. Merwin's poem “To the New Year," sunrise touches the tips of a few high leaves, and distant birdsong is heard. This quiet renewal, the lightest touch of a blessing, stirs the poet's senses— so this is the sound of you — and beckons us, the reader, to listen more closely. In the southernmost part of the Caribbean, on the island of Grenada, there is an overlook I like to visit at dusk: a rugged, unnamed cliff at the top of a grassy hill from which the ocean expands into a circular horizon. This is a place one might imagine is hers alone, a place to commune with water, earth, air, and sunlight. Climbing the hill, I find my attention thickening, my pace gradually slowing to the point where someone might come along and find me standing still, un-noticing of their presence. Being suspended between worlds is familiar to me. Among my siblings, I was notoriously difficult to pull away from imaginative play or an absorbing book. My children joke “Wake up, Mommy!” when they find me staring into the middle distance. My closest people are accustomed to my non-sequiturs and kindly allow for stone-skipping conversation. You see, there's the front edge of being here — our feet on the ground, present and accounted for. And then there's the unnamed expanse that speaks through dreams and intuition, the inarticulate, emergent knowing to which we also belong. This is the background into which Merwin listens for the sound of nature's arrival in a New Year, “here and now whether or not anyone hears it.” These are Robert Frost's woods, which he refers to only as “lovely, dark, and deep.” Shifting the lens from background to foreground, foreground to background, we are not lost, but refreshing our focus. A friend who speaks the language of computer programming offers the technical term for this: context-switching. We are sensing our way between worlds, cultivating an integrative awareness. To this, Rumi says “The only real rest comes when you're alone with God. Live in the nowhere that you came from, even though you have an address here.”The passing of one year into the next can be an integrative threshold, a place of unspooling and re-spooling the thread that we follow. We are among the fortunate ones who have returned to where we began a year ago, and a year before that, and so on around the spiral — newly endowed with the green-tipped growth and thickening ring of four more human seasons. We've arrived here before, but never with these present circumstances, never with this specific configuration of consciousness. What will we do with it? We are moving from a year that has been, laid bare for review, and a year that will be, revealed as yet only through trajectory and imagination. This time of year the light returns across a slant of shallow sky, so gradually, almost imperceptibly — who would fault us for not noticing? Dr. Seuss said sometimes we never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory. But we do have a choice. We can get quiet enough to listen. What I wish for you is this: listen at the threshold of this New Year. Avoid the overwhelm of a rap sheet of measurable resolutions, and instead open to whatever within is asking for your benevolent attendance. Soften your vigilance and invite your attention to migrate from foreground to background — which is to say, make room for your inner life, from which a single word or theme might just emerge as your compass. If you journal only once a year, let today be your day. For age and knowledge may be as they are but hope is “still invisible before us, untouched and possible.” May you find yourself arriving on higher ground.
In Wüsten nichts Neues.
