Wow! 52 episodes! A full years worth of tone talk!! I am flashing it back to where it all began on this one. Here is the very first ever attempt at a Rigs of Dad themed podcast. Labeled: "The Stories, Rumors, & Legends of Tooth & Nail Records"
Frodus was a pioneer post hardcore band whose influence is larger than their footprint ever was. This important group was recognized early by Brandon and Tooth & Nail, who acquired Frodus, a non-Christian from the 90’s DC punk scene that transitioned into the Tooth & Nail world as part of the recipe for the success of the scene we all know and love being built. These origins and early attractions to the danger of music and new movements is something we all feel or felt at some point to varying degrees, but Nate particularly embodies that mindset and is able to articulate the experience quite well. https://labeledpodcast.com/ Support Labeled on Patreon Join Labeled on Facebook Pre-order / pre-save Lightworker’s "Fury By Failure," out June 12th :: http://lightworker.ffm.to/fury Follow Lightworker on Spotify :: https://spoti.fi/3fZm8XD SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: Frodus “The Misaligned Men of Flomation” Roadside Monument “Sperm Ridden Burden” Live at Cornerstone ’02 Starflyer 59 “I Drive A Lot” Demon Hunter “Lifewar” Refused "Rather Be Dead" Thrice cover of Frodus’ “The Earth Isn’t Humming” Live Frodus “Red Bull of Juarez” MORE FROM TOOTH & NAIL: * Labeled: Music From The Podcast: smarturl.it/labeledplaylist * DISCOVER IT: New Tracks from T&N Records: smarturl.it/TNNDiscover * This Is Solid State: New Tracks from Solid State Records: https://spoti.fi/2CUCsaH * Tooth & Nail Store (LABELED Patreon members get 20% off everything): tnn.lnk.to/store

First tearing his way on to the music scene with the post-hardcore / math rock group Frodus, Cinca would stumble upon a and nanoloop compilation in the early 2000s that would shift his artistic direction. What began as a tour bus pass time of making music with Gameboy sounds, it would begin to break through with Shelby finding himself in the Myspace / Blog house movement before it's twilight. From their Swedish Columbia would continue as a connection of like minded individuals between D.C. and Sweden, exploring and expanding into new territories eventually penetrating its way into a new realms with connections to the cult classic video game Hotline Miami and its sequel. Swedish Colombia's releases are more than audio homages to the sounds of the 80s and video game soundtracks, as the label tries to create a connection with more than just a playable product with their physical releases, adding depth through retro-styled cases, elaborate artwork, and even board games. Shelby Cinca joins me on the DTP to discuss finding that nanoloop tape in Germany, his transition to electronic music, Dune, wrestling, and 10 years of Swedish Columbia Records!
Jason Hamacher‘s professional efforts are shaped by passion, motivation, and vision. He is an internationally recognized musician, photographer, writer, public speaker, and massage therapist. His work has taken him across the globe documenting the sights and sounds of culture, music, people, and food. Hamacher’s diverse clientele ranges from Vidal Sassoon to an NBA dance team, from the Syrian Embassy to some of the most popular heavy-metal bands in the world. He exhibits his photography frequently and is currently finishing both a book on Aleppo, Syria and a CD of ancient Christian chants. Hamacher’s passion for the arts was recognized early when he began playing drums at the age of ten, performed his first concert at fourteen, and recorded his first album at seventeen. His interest in history and culture unfolded as a youth while touring Europe and Asia with his band. He continues to write, record and play music internationally. In addition to running Lost Origin Productions, Hamacher is a happily married father, plays drums with two bands (Regents and Frodus), and leads the massage therapy department at RENU Med Spa in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Episode 11 features Jason Hamacher (drummer of Regents, Frodus, and Combatwoundedveteran, among other bands). Jason’s experience in music, as well as his Christian beliefs, have lead him to many unlikely adventures and research including finding himself working in Syria with the ancient Aramaic speaking Syrian Orthodox Church, and collaborating with the Smithsonian. If punk, Christian, and academic aren’t adequate enough adjectives to describe Jason, he is also a licensed massage therapist. Mix all of these unlikely backgrounds together, and you’ll find a hilarious, refreshingly open-minded conversation that somehow always finds its way back to hardcore and punk ideology. Catch up on all episodes of Cult and Culture podcast via iTunes or through Three One G’s Soundcloud.
Chris Jackson liked to play guitar riffs at an early age, from the Peter Gunn theme to Day Tripper, and made a musical career out of them with the rock band The Vehicle Birth and later Cracktorch. He opened the Dharma Coffee House in Fairfax with his friend Christian Yavorsk years before anybody in the area heard of Starbucks in order to have a place that served great coffee like they did in Europe, but also to give high school and college kids a place to hang out and listen to live music and poetry. Dharma hosted bands such as The Dismemberment Plan, Frodus, and the Sun Monkeys along with Jackson's own band, as they competed to be the best group in the area. The Vehicle Birth then moved to Boston to go to college, only releasing three singles and an LP called Tragedy on Crank in 1998. They went on a cross-country tour to support the album in 1999, but broke up on their way back home. Jackson then went on to form Cracktorch, who released the album Tonight the City in 2005 and went on to tour for the next decade. Jason Hamacher moved from Florida to Fairfax County, excited to be there because of a reference from a Scream album and its proximity to Minor Threat and the DC hardcore scene. He met Shelby Cinca on a Christian retreat and a video of him shirtless, banging out a Sepultura song sealed the deal of securing a spot in his band. This launched them on a ten-year odyssey of touring around the world and recording with three bands, from Frodus to The Black Sea and most recently Decahedron. This episode also features music from Jason’s straight-edge band, Battery, and his screamo project Combatwoundedveteran. Jason developed skills promoting his music and booking tours, almost securing Frodus a gig playing a lab in Antartica, and utilizing some of the same talents to preserve ancient Syrian chants. Jason has accomplished so much musically, but never takes himself or his achievements too seriously, and was more than happy to to give us insight into his Northern Virginia roots.
Along with bands like Frodus, Lugnut, and Kidskin Conduction, Bubble Jug played loud, experimental, and intense shows in and around the Chantilly, VA area. The lineup consisted of Dave Cleary and Kelly Medford sharing lead vocals, Scott Hawkins on bass, Jayson Capps on guitar, Josh Neall on drums, and the late Nathan Maddox on saxophone and everything else. Bubble Jug followed in the footsteps of bands as diverse as Nation of Ulysses, Bikini Kill, Born Against, and Sonic Youth, and added even more interesting sounds on their recordings with the help of Christian Quick at Stillness Sound. Like the delicious and highly edible gum from which they took their name, Bubble Jug burned bright for a few years and then disappeared... until now.

BONUS FRODUS!!! Jason gosh-darned Hamacher is so funny he doesn't fit into one podcast. So...here it is. The official "Team Bum-Out" story. Chris and Greg of Dillinger Escape Plan added to Jason's mischievious ways and this is one the funniest story I've ever heard. Then, there's the legendary prank phone call to G Gordon Liddy live on his show? But wait...how you gonna top that? Ok. How about almost getting gunned down at Jesus' tomb? I do this because I love you. Take care. Bye-bye. Chapter 57 Notes: Jason's Lost Origin Site: http://lostorigins.com Jason's latest band (with J Robbins...yeah. Oh my God. I thought I'd have to tape up my ribs. Jason Hamacher of Frodus is about as unique as they come. Drummer of Frodus, Regents, Zealot (and about a dozen other bands you've heard of) joins me and guest host Seth W for TWO podcasts! This is the first of the two. I tried to make this one wrap up but Jason...is Jason. Story after story after story made me so thankful I didn't hit the stop button. Hamacher talks Frodus, his land breaking and nothing short of historic relationship with Syria, we get heavy Christian theology, the super touching story of Jason's life from 1999-2003 that changed all the directions, massaging Ben from Dillinger Escape Plan...just hang on. It was just too good for one podcast. Chapter 56 Notes: Jason's Lost Origin Site: http://lostorigins.com Jason's latest band (with J Robbins...yeah. Hello Everybody! In this episode The Gersch and I had a great time laughing and talking with Jason Hamacher of Frodus, Battery, Regents, and a handful of other punk and hardcore bands. Jason was in town giving a talk at The North Door about his experiences in pre-war Syria. You can go to Lost Origin Productions to view his photography and find out more information about the archival recordings that he produced as well. This episode is all over the place. Jason came over and brought the funny. Jason was also able to get The Gersch to engage more than he normally would.
Jason Hamacher has spent the years documenting vanishing culture of Armenian Christians of Aleppo Syria. Shelby Cinca is a wild conversation. What a blast. We learn how he wound up overseas, the DC scene, Dischord, Ian McKaye...really cool insight on a scene that we all THINK we know. His band Frodus is considered to be a cornerstone band of the 90's post-hardcore. Shelby Cinca has played with members of Fugazi, Dillinger Escape Plan and many, many....MANY others. Seriously. Biggest band camp page I've ever seen. We discuss board gaming, cupcake making and pro wrestling. But it also gets deep, dark and beautiful. We discuss birth, death, sacrifice, perspective and dark matter. We love this dude...and we love you. Take care. Bye-bye. Now that your taxes are a thing of the past you can finally relax and start planning on how to not pay them next year. While you wait for that, here is a brand new episode of Edgeland to have fun with. This week Bill plays a loving tribute to his loving mother that will be celebrating a birthday this week. In the interview portion of the show things are a little bit different. Jason Hamacher of Battery and Frodus returns to talk about his company Lost Origins. Jason gives a super sized interview on how the company started, what led him to break edge, and the power of hardcore. A fascinating interview from start to finish.
Jason Hamacher was the drummer for the band Frodus who formed in 1993 and was part of Tooth and Nail's early hardcore roster. Frodus toured with The Refused witnessed their breakup first hand. Jason is now involved with recording the oldest Christian music that exists, chanting in Syria that dates back to 190 AD. Webinar Link: 5 Myths About Women, Sex and Porn http://x3.cm/BadChristian
The deep freeze has set in for most of the country, but it is always warm in Edgeland. This week on the show Bill talks about how he is a dirty cheater unworthy of respect, hopefully this apology is enough to make up for past mistakes. In the interview portion of the show Bill talks with Chris Bavaria of Mindset and Praise about Pennsylvania punk, joining up with Mindset and Praise, and his photography career. In the non edge column Bill talks with Jason Hamacher of Frodus, Battery, and the production company Lost Origins about growing up in Florida, being the son of a preacher, and how he got his start playing in his various bands.
"The kids will have their say" when Jason Hamacher (drummer of Frodus/Decahedron/Combatwoundedveteran/Regents/Battery) shows up "at the Wilson Center" with a literal suitcase full of super-memorable worst gigs. From infiltrating Latino biker gangs in Montana to playing high school graduations in Nebraska to gutting skinheads in DC to what lead to the break-up of Frodus, Jason delivers the goods. Not content with a buttload of killer 90's punk/hc tales? We also discuss Jason's time in Syria and his work documentating ancient religious prayers and songs. If you're not now you never were on this week's WORST GIG EVER!
