Neal Foard is an accomplished marketing expert and storyteller. Neall Brick and I met through WindUp a couple years ago and immediately hit it off. He was shooting with a Q2 and I was selling a jacket he wanted. Funny how these things can happen. With very limited research, I quickly found out Neall and I had even more in common - namely a history working within the apparel industry, so I was excited to invite him on the show. Our 69th Zoomcast (Aug 26th, 2021); Host, #Charlotte Sista C Ferrell opened with a welcome to our featured presenters, Una Bruhns and Lesley Hebert; others participating as guests introduced themselves. Una, a published author and writing activity leader began with inspiring Haiku poems about the Cherry Blossom festival. This led to others' sharing memories of cherry blossom festivals and several inquiries about the nature of Haikus. Una anchored the structure of this three-line poem with 5 syllables, 7 syllables, then 5 syllables. Aside from encouraging us to experiment writing a haiku about anything that inspires us – plants, people, events. Her rich bounty of inspiration included sharing how she created the book, Poetry in Photography where poems convey feelings generated by photos. Her tips are to read other people's poems; use writing prompts and participate in critique groups. Leslie demonstrated the value of participating in a review or critique by reading a suspenseful attention-locking passage from her memoir- Japan travelogue in the works. As a career writer and - English as a Second Language instructor, Leslie has not only educated hundreds of students, she's won awards and had some recent poems selected for publication. Her tips were to always carry a notebook, go out into the world, “relax, observe, and just let your words come. Our engaged “zoomcast” guest participants also described ways that writing enriches their lives. Lesley shared the benefits of joining a readers' group where everyone reads segments of their work and gets feedback. Our 61st Zoomcast (June 24); Charlotte recaps why we – like concerned community organizations across the country – are Commemorating instead of Celebrating Indigenous People's Day this year. In light of the painful news that 700+ more bodies of Indigenous Children- and possibly some adults have been discovered on the grounds of a Residential School, we had a lively g discussion of our understanding and feelings about, these words: Indigenous, Unceeded, Treaty, Traditional, Reconciliation, Sovereignty, Nationhood. While our opinions or experiences varied, we concluded that such discussions are essential in helping non-Indigenous people become better informed and serve as allies and advocates for children, families, and organizations seeking to rectify emotional, educational and financial injustices against the first inhabitants of Canada and other disenfranchised people. Our 54th Zoomcast (May 6, 2021); Mother's Day Charlotte Sista C Ferrell, Host During our 54th Episode Charlotte posed two questions that sparked a rich flow of conversation. The first dealt with the origin of North American Mother’s Day celebrations- first as a special time for recognizing the importance of the role of mothers and their value in raising children with a concept of freedom, peace and responsibility to a highly commercialized semi holiday with heavy advertising for jewelry, restaurant meals, flowery cards etc. The second involved bringing a photo or other item to express its significance to Mother’s Day. Nansey brought a photo of herself with her mother and reflected upon the exhilarating feeling of seeing your newborn baby despite the pain. Neall read, “Ordinary Mary”, a poem expressing regret and awe for all the ways his mother cared for him and survived life’s challenges without him noticing as a child. “Queen” Kombi discussed the absence of a Mother’s Day celebration in Ghana where the whole neighborhood or community extends the care associated with “mothers” and cares for a child if its mother dies.

At the heart of Gov. Hogan’s plan to reopen the state economy are increased testing for COVID-19 and contact tracing. The state has tested more than 460,000 people and deployed 1,400 contact tracers so far. Vickie Fretwell is special assistant and senior advisor in the office of Maryland Health Secretary Robert R. Neall. And she is leading the Maryland Health Department’s new statewide effort to educate the public about contact tracing. Water is universal, eternal, ever-changing. Each year we celebrate a new program year with the ritual of Water Communion. Flowing in continuity and change, returning to familiar spaces, we welcome the new into our lives. Summer is a time for renewal — a time to change the pattern, to replenish our resources, to re-create ourselves. The Jewish mystical Kabbalah tradition speaks of Tikkun olam, which translates as “repairing the world.” As people of faith, we are called to repair the brokenness of the world, which begins with healing our own lives.

We talk a lot about elephants as a metaphor for something large and mysterious – the elephant in the room, or perhaps perceiving parts of the elephant without understanding the whole. How do we learn to embrace, to cherish, to engage with the elephants in our lives?

Unitarian Universalists have been called “freethinking mystics with hands” – faithful people who will not be bound to a static creed, and who commit to a practical religion, a religious practice of making a difference. What does it mean to be part of a religion that is beyond belief?

Along with bands like Frodus, Lugnut, and Kidskin Conduction, Bubble Jug played loud, experimental, and intense shows in and around the Chantilly, VA area. The lineup consisted of Dave Cleary and Kelly Medford sharing lead vocals, Scott Hawkins on bass, Jayson Capps on guitar, Josh Neall on drums, and the late Nathan Maddox on saxophone and everything else. Bubble Jug followed in the footsteps of bands as diverse as Nation of Ulysses, Bikini Kill, Born Against, and Sonic Youth, and added even more interesting sounds on their recordings with the help of Christian Quick at Stillness Sound. Like the delicious and highly edible gum from which they took their name, Bubble Jug burned bright for a few years and then disappeared... until now.

Where have we come from, what are we becoming, where are we going? In the past months we have journeyed through the first phase of this transitional time, honoring the past, looking forward to adventures ahead. How do we stay open to possibility as the future unfolds before us?

What are the discoveries, the complexities, the challenges of living in time? We are shaped by the times in which we live, even as we shape them in our living, and if we are paying attention, we soon learn there are no easy answers. May our journey be a blessing.

On this weekend of Memorial Day, dedicated to remembering the lives of those who have died in military service, we remind ourselves that the act of remembering is, in itself, a sacred act that weaves the larger ongoing pattern of life.

Ministry is the act of putting into action our programs, desires and commitments — an act of leadership and service to a higher good. As this congregation elects the Ministerial Search Committee, we consider, what is the ministry to which we are called, and to which we commit ourselves?

The powerful vision of this congregation inspires and challenges us, calling us to imagine new ways of thinking, doing, being in the world. We rise to the challenge of moving beyond the familiar to create new possibility, a new reality we can barely imagine, our promise to the world.

Thriving faith communities offer a balance of connection and commitment that both sustains our lives and offers opportunities to serve. On this Connection Sunday, we celebrate those who lead and serve, and explore the love that binds us into creative and sustaining community.

Martin Buber famously declared that we human beings are the “promise-making, promise-keeping, promise-breaking, promise-renewing” animal. What are the promises we make to each other in this community of faith, and how do we balance and integrate the promises of the past and an emerging future?

A core principle in traditional philosophies is the inherent and healthy balance between the forces of darkness and light, feminine and masculine, assertive and receptive. How do we create balance in our lives so that we are both active and nourished by sources of outer and inner darkness and light?

The focus of this transitional time is preparing for the future. That includes understanding the rich heritage here, preparing for new ministerial leadership, electing the team to conduct the search on behalf of the congregation, and supporting the search. Every voice, every perspective, is vital to a successful search process.

UUCP is shifting our typical Sunday services and encouraging a multi-gen presence at this year’s Women’s March. A multi-faith, women-led service will be held at 8:30 AM at First Church UCC, followed by carpooling to the march. Emrys, Benjie and Katie will be present at the state capitol at 10:00 AM to organize our presence with chants, songs, and signs. Rev. Margret will lead the two Sunday morning services at UUCP for those who are unable to attend the march.

As other states “fall back” and change their clocks, we Arizonans must remember that our temporal relations with the rest of the nation have shifted. If we were not mortal, time would not so much matter. How do we live in a world where permanence and evanescence are inextricably linked?

Human communities throughout the northern hemisphere celebrate the winter solstice as a reawakening of the light – here in the desert, the quality of the light is subtly different as the longest night approaches. Together let us celebrate this ancient recognition of light returning to a darkened world.

When challenging times leave us stony and closed, joy may not find a place to nest within us. Opening our hearts In this season of hope and love, we seek to deepen our capacity for emotional response to welcome all that life may offer.

In this time of Advent, we feel the stirrings of hope below the surface, as in the growing dark we await the return of light to the world. Dedicating children into the care of this congregation, we celebrate the light that glows within.

As we explore the interplay of identities within and among us, we ask: how does each individual find the deep courage to explore the roots and branches of their true identity, and how do we open our hearts to affirm the varied and evolving identities of all?

Love is the doctrine of this congregation, and radical inclusion is our vision. We have the opportunity to create the space for our vision of inclusive love to unfold in tangible ways. Everyone has a part to play as we make room for the future we build together.

Understanding and combating white supremacy culture is a theological and practical endeavor for Unitarian Universalists everywhere, as we work to live the principles that guide our faith commitments. Let us join with courage in exploration and experiences to become more awakened to the work that lies before us.

At this traditional time honoring our connection with the spirit world, we acknowledge our losses, celebrating the rich heritage and sacrifice of those who have gone before.
