This week we travel to Tana Island, Vanuatu (then the New Hebrides) in the midst of World War Two. God has returned - and not a moment too soon. Having abandoned them decades earlier, just as bad men with awful intentions arrived to steal their land - and send their people off to far away locales to be worked to death - he was back, as an American soldier named John Frum. Sources Include: This week a lot of articles (which I had saved in tabs - when my iPad crashed and needed a restore…This is as best I remember it.) In John They Trust by Paul Raffaele This explainer in the Guardian This Guardian article by Christopher Lord Archiving a Prophecy: An ethnographic history of the ‘John Frum files' (Tanna, Vanuatu, 1941–1980) by Marc Tabani This short piece on the NZ History site (that confirms my memory NZ too had blackbirded labour) How Blackbirding Forced Tens of Thousands of Pacific Islanders into Slavery After the Civil War by Shoshi Parks Blackbirding and Indentured Labour in 19th Century Queensland by Sue Thompson From the Islands by Scott Hamilton (everyone should go and follow Scott on Twitter, if you're still on there… I miss not seeing him in my feed, now I've X-ited) Hunting the Blackbirder: Ross-Lewin and the Royal Navy by Doug Hunt There were a handful more, including pages of old newspaper clippings on the Daphne Slave-ship bust, and a couple of articles specific to Blackbirding in Peru - I apologise for not backing these sources up somewhere as I went… Support the show on Patreon for $2 US a month and get access to exclusive content, or Try our 7 Day Free Trial. Cults! Cargo! Colonialism! John Frum is a mythical and beloved figure to many native people of the island of Tanna in Vanuatu, and could, maybe, MAYBE, be part of a vanishingly rare time when the arrival of white people from the United States was an improvement on the squatting of white people from Europe. MAYBE. Our alternative to John Frum is Love Has Won, a cult whose name makes sense if you replace "Love" with "Our Super Drunk Colloidal-Silver Fiend Karen of a Cult Leader" and "Won" with "Been Dead in the Other Room for Several Months and We Put Christmas Lights on Her to Cheer Things Up a Bit PLEASE DON'T CALL THE COPS." Join us, won't you?
In the late 1930's the elders on the island of Tanna in the Republic of Vanuatu were visited by a vision of a white man named John Frum, who told them to live more kastom and rebuke the Scottish Presbyterian Missionaries who have shut down their more bohemian life. But it only got more popular when World War 2 came to the South Pacific. After the war, the islanders decided to keep worshipping John Frum in the hope that he'll one day return and make their cargo cult prominent. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/deeploretv/support

Cargo Cultsin WW2, tons of troops have first contact with pre-industrial cultures. These cultures tend to, have a "big man" political systemsustenance farming, hunter-gatherer society, scarcityif you're able to give more gifts and survive, you're more powerfulMore power, creates more powerCan't reciprocate? This movement started before the war, and became a cargo cult afterwards. Cult members worshiped certain unspecified Americans having the name "John Frum" or "Tom Navy" who they claimed had brought cargo to their island during World War II and whom they identified as being the spiritual entity who would provide cargo to them in the futureSome cargo cults are still active. These include:The John Frum cult on Tanna island (Vanuatu)The Tom Navy cult on Tanna island (Vanuatu)The Prince Philip Movement on the island of Tanna, which worshipped the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II.According to ancient Yaohnanen tales, the son of a mountain spirit travelled over the seas to a distant land. There, he married a powerful woman and in time would return to them. He was sometimes said to be a brother to John Frum.[2]The people of the Yaohnanen and Takel area believe in the divinity of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the consort to Queen Elizabeth II. They had seen the respect accorded to Queen Elizabeth II by the colonial officials and concluded that her husband, Prince Philip, must be the son referred to in their legends. It is unclear just when this belief came about, but it was probably some time in the 1950s or 1960s. It was strengthened by the royal couple's official visit to Vanuatu in 1974, when a few villagers had the opportunity to actually see Prince Philip from a distance. The Prince was not then aware of the sect, but it was brought to his attention several years later by John Champion, the British Resident Commissioner in the New Hebrides. In April 2021 the sect mourned Prince Philip's death. Village Chief Albi said that he was "terribly, terribly sorry" that he died and tribal leader Chief Yapa sent his condolences to the Royal Family and the people of the UK.Kirk Huffman, an anthropologist familiar with the group, said that after their period of mourning the group would probably transfer their veneration to Prince Charles, who had visited Vanuatu in 2018 and met with some of the tribal leaders. It seems like if the technological advanced society had a guideline or rule or general order NOT to interfere in the with the internal and natural development of alien civilizationsThe Prime DirectiveStarfleet General Order 1General Order 1non-interference directiveThe Prime Directive US involvement in the Vietnam War was a superpower interfering in the natural development of southeast Asian society; the creation in the original series is attributed to a statement of such Hosted on Acast. When tribal groups first make contact with cultures and civilizations outside their own there are often unexpected consequences. Throughout history moments of 'First Contact' have led to disease outbreaks, war, and genocide. However, there is also a relatively new and incredibly odd phenomenon tied to first contact events known as Cargo Cults. These strange religions are largely formed out of a single campaign during World War 2. In short, tribal groups across the pacific experienced allied military might, and the resource that followed these military groups during the war in the pacific. The groups only found one appropriate response to these godlike forces; worship. These are the unbelievable stories of the Cargo Cults, namely John Frum.

HERZOG MONTH CONTINUES! For episode 38, Bob and Ginger learn a little bit about themselves after watching lots of footage of flowing lava in Werner Herzog's 2016 geological/anthropological documentary "Into the Inferno". Volcanoes. They are the magma filled teats of the world. Fascinating in their own right, and the societies that form around them even more so. We travel the world in this one to attempt to understand civilization's boner for these impressive, but deadly, geological structures. We go to Indonesia, Iceland, Ethiopia, even friggin' North Korea! In our journey we encounter the odd world of chicken buildings, God sex-holes, rigid totalitarianism, and Bob's new religion...John Frum. The cargo ships will cum. A beautiful film that you gotta see. At least for all those hypnotic lava shots. Then boot-scoot here with us as we break it all down. Available on Netflix streaming right now. Keep on Doccin'®

Phil Freeman talks to guitarist Matt Hollenberg of Cleric and Simulacrum.
Episode 5 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with guitarist Matt Hollenberg. He’s one of the most adventurous players around right now, and he’s got a lot going on. He’s a member of John Zorn's trio Simulacrum, along with organist John Medeski and drummer Kenny Grohowski; we interviewed all three of them a few years ago. He’s also a member of the band John Frum, with Liam Wilson of the Dillinger Escape Plan and some other underground metal folks; we reviewed their debut album earlier this year. He’s also just launched a new instrumental metal fusion project called Shardik , and his longest-running band is Cleric. They’ve been around for more than a dozen years, but they’ve only released two albums, one of which, Retrocausal, just came out. Apparently, though, they’ve got two other records in the can, one of which is entirely made up of Zorn compositions, from the Masada songbook. Matt has a lot to say in our interview about Cleric, about Simulacrum and working with Zorn, about Shardik and John Frum, and about the state of metal in general. He also talks about a very bad accident he suffered earlier this year, which made it impossible for him to play for several months. It’s a really interesting conversation, and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
This episode of Sects Ed takes us to the South Pacific. On the island of Tanna, many Indigenous people worship a divine American serviceman named John Frum. Join us as we explore the origins of this "cargo cult" that emerged in the 1940s as a response to European colonialism, but remains a recognized regional religion to this day.

Join host Greg Carlwood of The Higherside Chats podcast as he talks banking, reptilians, and the lost race of giants with returning guest, Xaviant Haze. As many of us thirst for alternative theories that contradict the constructed false narrative we find ourselves being spoon-fed by the elite through mainstream media and the manipulation of our education system, researchers like today's guest Xaviant Haze have dedicated countless hours pouring over the scattered remnants of history in hopes of quenching our palates and satiating our desire for answers. As an author of several books, including "Aliens in Egypt" and "Ancient Giants of the Americas", Haze joins The Higherside to breakdown the history of banking, the role of reptiles in our culture and collective consciousness and talks of a time when giants roamed the Earth. 2:25 Starting off this "smoke filled odyssey of truth", Greg and Xaviant discuss the suppressed history of American banking, the circulation of money still flowing back to the British monarchy, the nefarious crimes committed by banking bloodlines like the Rothschilds and Morgans and the role of the Federal Reserve in maintaining this long-standing plutocracy. Haze also elaborates on the influence of the infamous, Alexander Hamilton, the War of 1812, Andrew Jackson in The Battle of New Orleans and a THC classic: the Titanic and the Federal Reserve. 10:42 Greg and Xaviant continue their conversation on banking history by revisiting the role and mechanisms of control established by the Shemsu Hor in ancient Egypt. They also take a deeper look into the connection between the ancient Brotherhood of the Serpent, the biblical reference to the snake in the Garden of Eden, the prevalence of snake visions in shamanic journeys and today's theories of shadowy reptilian elites playing the puppet master. Haze also addresses the presence of reptiles among pop-culture and connects the dots between the oil tycoon Sinclair family, Jim Henson's sitcom Dinosaurs and the Rosslyn Chapel of Scotland. 24:30 With Haze's recent e-book titled "The Donald Trump Conspiracy", he and Greg discuss the direction of the Trump administration, the continuation of the globalist agenda, and the breakdown of today's power pyramid. 33:15 Greg and Xaviant circle back to their earlier discussion of American independence and address the Jay Treaty, property taxes, and who owns the Federal Reserve. 38:42 While the subject of giants is nothing new to the conspiracy connoisseurs, Haze's book takes a new twist: examining actual encounters of the Conquistadors with giants. Greg and Xaviant dive into the details of explorer encounters, including Vespucci, Magellan, Columbus and their assumed connection to the sky. They also discuss the saga of fighter pilot John Frum and cargo cults. 45:15 Continuing with their discussion of giants, Greg and Xaviant pivot to the Hollow Earth, Admiral Byrd's expedition and legends of giants. They also discuss the ancient unexplored ruins of Cuba, the asteroid collision in the Younger Dryus Period, and what implications these have on our understanding of history. Become a Plus Member at www.TheHighersideChatsPlus.com/subscribe to hear a second hour of all THC episodes. This week's included: - the role of the Smithsonian in eliminating any evidence of giants in America - the Paxton Hayes saga - John Quincy Adams' interest in the inner Earth and it's devestating effects to his political career - the excavation Xaviant is personally involved in and how close he is to perhaps uncovering the Lost Dutchman Mine and proof of a lost race of giants - other legends of lost cities and hidden treasures - gold fever - drone ranges - modern day giant reports from the caves in the Solomon islands - smaller museums that you might be able to get to bring the giant bones up from the basement - the Lovelock Cave giants - ghost tales from Xaviant's haunted home

Once upon a time (it was the 1940s), there was an island nation in the South Pacific (Vanuatu, to be exact), who's people received a prophecy that foretold of America, refrigeration, and cargo. And so began the John Frum Movement, the rise of a cargo cult, and a return to custom and community amidst a background of missionary colonization. Join us as we speak with Jessica Sherry, director and producer of the beautiful documentary Waiting For John.
He actually hates it, but it's good title clickbait to troll him! Also, sorry for the audio issues. I'll fix them tonight, but if you really must listen ASAP, there you go. In continuance of no one complaining about me not linking to the stories in the show notes, I'll descend further into laziness and continue not doing it. This week we discuss the Wintersun Indiegogo, new music from Solstafir, John Frum and Life of Agony, and the uproar about SXSW contracts talking about deportation. Then we go into a philosophy discussion about our backgrounds in the discipline, or core principles, morality and humanism. Eden loves humanism.
Eden has abandoned us yet again, so, statistically speaking, we'll probably have Ahmed or Nick with us this week. I guess you'll have to guess whom'st'd've!? We talk about some news/drama, new releases, and mainstream-metal interactions. Namely Dallas Toler-Wade leaving Nile and getting replaced with Brian of Enthean. Then Cynic drama following the recent release of their demo tapes. Then some new music. Galactic Empire (and Anchorhead), Dodecahedron, Artificial Brain, Body Count, Linkin Park, Reaping Asmodeia, Ogarya, John Frum, Born of Osiris. Of course we talk about the dude singing Necrophagist at Canadian Voice. And the Grammys, namely Megadeth and Metallica. Post-recording note: New Nile lineup is awesome. I'm stoked now. That fist bump was amazing.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jim Thomsen attended UCLA - studying mathematics and philosophy. His interest in mountaineering led him to start an outdoor company in 1972: Wilderness Experience. The company grew rapidly and completed a public stock offering in 1980. After owning two mountaineering retail stores and being a partner in a sales representation organization, in 1994 Jim took a corporate job with JanSport, part of the VF Corporation. In 2000 Jim and his wife Katie moved to Belgium to head up an international division of VF that included JanSport, Eastpak and Kipling. Photo by me. There’s an island in the Pacific Ocean that’s only 25 miles long and 12 miles wide. The people there worship a god called John Frum. And their religion has a surprising origin. The Tannese have something in common with a caged pigeon, Peggy Lee and a baby that won't go to sleep. Find out more about where magical thinking comes from in this episode of N of Us.
