Against” vom amerikanischen Singer-Songwriter Amigo the Devil.
How can so many people pledge allegiance to punk, something with no fixed identity? Depending on who and where you are, punk can be an outlet, excuse, lifestyle, escapism, conversation, community, ideology, sales category, social movement, punishable offense, badge of authenticity, reason to drink beer forever, or an aesthetic of belligerent incompetence. And if someone has a strong belief about what punk is, odds are they have even stronger feelings about what punk is not. Sam McPheeters championed many different versions. Over the course of two decades, he fronted Born Against, released dozens of records and fanzines, and toured seventeen times across the northern hemisphere. In Mutations: Twenty Years Embedded in Hardcore Punk (Barnacle Book, 2020), he examines the diverse realms he intersected—New York hardcore, Riot Grrrl, Gilman street, the hidden enclaves of Olympia, and New England, and downtown Los Angeles—and the forces of mental illness and creative inspiration that drove him, and others, in the first place. Sam McPheeters was born in Ohio and raised in upstate New York. In 1981, at age twelve, he co-authored Travelers Tales: Rumors and Legends of the Albany-Saratoga Region. Starting in 1989, he sang for Born Against, Men's Recovery Project, and Wrangler Brutes, touring seventeen times across North America, Europe, and Japan. Since 2009, he has written for Criterion, Vice, and The Village Voice, among others. He currently lives in Pomona, CA, with his wife. Learn more about your ad choices. Portland, Oregon's Bothers have just announced the release of their sophomore LP “II” on San Antonio/PDX label Dirt Cult Records. The band's self-titled debut album was a concise and raging lesson in relentless punk 'n' roll, with tips of the hat to bands like Motörhead, and Hot Snakes. ‘II' marks a new era for the band. Heavier and more expansive, the album ventures into the realm of metalic hardcore with fiercesome riffing and dynamic tempo changes. The melodic intensity of their first release remains, resulting in an album that calls to mind influences like Tragedy, Laughing Hyenas, Jesus lizard, Neurosis and Born Against. The band's one sheet succinctly captures the feel of the album in a way only the composers' could capture. “When you decide it's finally time to strip naked, scarf a fistful of peyote buttons, and drive an '82 Cadillac Cutlass deep into the desert in the middle of a lightning storm, BOTHERS second LP should probably be blaring on your tape deck while you daydream about communing with the coyotes or some shit. Two tracks in, you can almost smell the ozone as the horizon explodes. Inherently primal, their second offering is nothing short of bespoke savagery - deeper, uglier, and stranger than their first outing. Imagine HUSKER DU finally found something to be genuinely angry about, or if you ran the first couple TELEVISION records through a boardwalk funhouse meat grinder. If you've never punched yourself in the throat hard enough to make the room spin like your future swirling down the shitter, this record will make you realize it's time”. In Episode 26 of Cult and Culture, Justin and Luke catch up with two members of short-lived 90s hardcore band End of the Line, Cory Linstrum (John Henry West) and Matt Anderson (Gravity Records, Heroin). They talk about coming up DIY, seeing Born Against play in their own garage, working with Ebullition to release their only album (now being reissued by Three One G), and the second (third? fourth?) wave of hardcore that the 90s brought with it. They also talk about the violence happening in San Diego at that time, the magic of the legendary venue Che Cafe and the scene it fostered, and the way that music helps keep people connected over decades in ways that nothing else can. They also dive deeper into Gravity Records, and some of the memorable releases including Man is the Bastard, Earthless, and Antioch Arrow. The concept of Cult and Culture began as a short segment created by Justin Pearson, an internationally known musician, record label owner (Three One G Records), author, and actor. He is perhaps best known as bassist for bands such as Dead Cross, The Locust, and Some Girls as well as vocalist for Deaf Club, Swing Kids, and Planet B. Having traveled the world touring in hardcore and punk bands since age 15, Justin has come to know and work with a broad spectrum of captivating personalities and brilliant minds, many of which are key figures in the realm of popular culture and cult followings alike-- from being on the soundtrack to John Waters' Cecil B. Demented, to acting in an Asia Argento's Incompresa, to playing in Dead Cross with Mike Patton and Dave Lombardo. Cult and Culture arose as an opportunity to document bits and pieces of the DIY-driven, subversive world of art Pearson identifies with- one that many are not aware of or perhaps have misconceptions about. Eventually, Pearson joined up with producer and bandmate Luke Henshaw (Sonido De La Frontera, Planet B, Satanic Planet, First Power Crew) to build the idea into a proper podcast, now recorded at his own PengOne Studios in San Diego. Henshaw has collaborated with hip hop legends such as Invisible Skratch Piklz' D-Styles and Q-Bert, Kool Keith, in addition to being immersed in the world of Cumbia alongside Sonido De La Frontera bandmate Karlos Paez (B Side Players). He also recently scored the music for upcoming documentary Sk8face, which tells the history of skateboard graphics. In this way, both Justin and Luke are influenced by a diverse array of subcultures that all have connected roots. John Waters was one of the first people interviewed for the podcast- an icon of both cult and culture. Since then, guests have included a broad scope of musicians, producers, authors, and anyone passionate about what they do-- anyone from Grammy-winning musician Juan Alderete (Mars Volta, Racer X, creator of Pedals And Effects) to actor Michael Malarkey (Vampire Diaries, Project Bluebook), from San Diego Black Panther Party members to longtime partners Nicola and Adam in electro-punk band ADULT. or The Satanic Temple cofounder Lucien Greaves (who would go on to form Satanic Planet with Luke and Justin as a direct result of their podcast conversation). The focus is not intended to be solely on people in any one realm, and because guests are friends and family, the conversations are frank, informal yet well-informed, and genuine. Pearson and Henshaw seek to achieve a casual openness, blurring lines between traditional guest and host. DBL#24 '90s HARDCORE MIXTAPE side A' - PETE vs PEET (Narcosis, Hard to Swallow, Red Right Hand, Underclass, Burst of Silence). This episode is a slighly different one in that it's half conversation and half music. The focus being on the type of 90s U.S. hardcore that we both loved so much. It was a nice way for both of us to find a common bond and also talk about the bands he did vocals in like NARCOSIS, HARD TO SWALLOW, RED RIGHT HAND, UNDERCLASS, BURST OF SILENCE etc. Some big names weren't included but it goes without saying no 45 minutes would be complete if it didn't include the essentials like LOS CRUDOS, DROPDEAD or BORN AGAINST. There will be a follow on episode dedicated to 90s Euro hardcore which is equally as important but less talked about nowadays. You can most likely find any of these bands on Discogs or YouTube, Soulseek file sharing or via bandcamp in some cases... all of the original physical releases are worth picking up if you find anything interesting? Today's episode is with Adam Nathanson. Adam grew up in New Jersey, and in the 1980s began playing in Hardcore punk bands around New York City, first with bands Mister Softee, and Trauma, then with life's blood, and band that ultimately led to the band Born Against. After Born Against, Adam went on to form an even more musically interesting band, called the Young Pioneers. In this conversation we discuss his path in music, the stories of these bands, and also, the politics, from the political climates during some of the bands, to the one we are living in now.
Albums discussed: Propagandhi - How To Clean Everything; Born Against - Battle Hymns for the Race War; Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Don't Know How To Party; Sepultura - Chaos A.D.; https://fatwreck.com/collections/best-sellers/products/how-to-clean-everything-20th-anniversary-edition; https://exclaim.ca/music/article/propagandhi-nazi_baiting_hardcore_raging Joined by our friend Josh Fekete. We all agree this is one of our favorites.
Amigo the Devil released a new album titled Born Against in April 2021. I recently interviewed Amigo the Devil himself AKA Danny to discuss the new album. We also chatted about how he got his start in music and where Amigo the Devil will go from here.
Amigo the Devil is coming for us all. In this first podcast of 2022, we catch up with the lovable Lucifer himself to discuss his life in song. From growing up in Miami, passing out demos on the streets of San Francisco, and recording his latest album, 'Born Against,". We also discuss the origin of Amigo's dark lyrical well, the importance of writing instinctually, and the nervous joy of finally playing with a full band behind him. Amigo also jams his hit song "Hell and You" for the first-ever live musical performance on the podcast! - Brought to you by Sailor Jerry!

SAN ONOFRE drafts Uncle Sam McPheeters (World Upside Down, Good!). Onofrita interviú a el hombre de Born Against... SAN ONOFRE wants Honest Uncle Sam McPheeters for SAN ONOFRE Congregation.
SAN ONOFRE-Sembramos Colis, recogeremos a Uncle Sam SAN ONOFRE propone y nuestra admirada audiencia dispone. ¡Cálzate tus tejanos, so bruto!
I have a love/hate relationship with New York Hardcore. The stuff I love – I love A LOT. The stuff I loathe… Well, let’s just focus on the stuff I love. On this mini-episode I ramble on about arguably the most widely known and influential “scene” spawned by hardcore-punk. This certainly isn’t a historical review […]

On the third episode of Flex Your Head, a Scream Therapy podcast spinoff, host Jason Schreurs welcomes his dear friend Mike to talk about The Rebel Sound of Shit and Failure. Amigo the Devil is a pretty unique songwriter. His songs are hard to pin down, both sonically and lyrically. He calls his sound “Dark Folk” which is pretty accurate. But it’s more than that. He draws on various influences to create a sonic landscape that is sparse, and intriguing. His lyrics often focus on heavy issues of death, religion, even ethics. In the end his songwriting is fascinating and leaves you thinking about things long after the song is over. I had a chance to chat with him about his new album “Born Against.” I hope you dig it!
Welcome to Episode 29! I can't believe I've kept it up for this long. I only missed a couple weeks since I started this thing and at times like I don't want to do it at all, but I always get pulled back to it because I love playing music for people. I'm not too sure how many people listen to this, and if they did would they even admit it? Who knows. I hope you enjoy the show, whoever you are. J.J. Anselmi is the author of Doomed to Fail: The Incredibly Loud History of Doom, Sludge, and Post-metal; and Heavy: A Memoir of Wyoming, BMX, and Heavy Fucking Music. He’s played drums in several heavy bands, including In the Company of Serpents and Former Worlds. He’s currently the drummer of Drainage, a sludgy metalcore band from Long Beach, California.
As a chef, Brooks Headley has won a James Beard Award, opened his own groundbreaking restaurant Superiority Burger, and authored two essential cookbooks. As a drummer, Brooks has played in some of the most influential hardcore and punk bands of the '90s and '00s—Born Against and Universal of Armageddon chief among them. As a reader Brooks is omnivorous, but a youthful love of Shakespeare is a tentpole in his bibliophilic development.
Brooks Headley fell in love with music while listening to Dr. Demento on his grandmother’s radio. He’s also had a lifetime obsession with food, leading to a career working in--and eventually owning-- restaurants. He talks to Joe about: having pragmatic dreams; being raised by an incredible, single mom; drumming for bands such as Universal Order of Armageddon, Born Against, Skull Kontrol, and (Young) Pioneers; cooking for the 1% at high-end restaurants; and how his love of fine food and punk rock converged to inform the creation of Superiority Burger, his vegan restaurant on Manhattan's Lower East Side.
Along with bands like Frodus, Lugnut, and Kidskin Conduction, Bubble Jug played loud, experimental, and intense shows in and around the Chantilly, VA area. The lineup consisted of Dave Cleary and Kelly Medford sharing lead vocals, Scott Hawkins on bass, Jayson Capps on guitar, Josh Neall on drums, and the late Nathan Maddox on saxophone and everything else. Bubble Jug followed in the footsteps of bands as diverse as Nation of Ulysses, Bikini Kill, Born Against, and Sonic Youth, and added even more interesting sounds on their recordings with the help of Christian Quick at Stillness Sound. Like the delicious and highly edible gum from which they took their name, Bubble Jug burned bright for a few years and then disappeared... until now.
Exploded View (Sky Horse Publishing) It's 2050, and LAPD Detective Terri Pastuzka has drawn the short straw with her first assignment of the new decade. Someone has executed one of the city's countless immigrants, and no one (besides the usual besieged advocacy groups) seems to much care. Even Terri herself is already looking ahead to her next case before an unexpected development reveals there s far more to this corpse than meets the eye. And a lot already meets the eye. In a city immersed in augmented reality, the LAPD have their own superior network of high-tech eyewearPanOpts, the ultimate panopticonallowing Terri instant access to files and suspects and literal insertion into the crime scene using security footage captured from every angle the day the murder occurred. What started as a single homicide turns into a string of unsolved murders that tie together in frightening ways, leading Terri down a rabbit hole through Los Angeles s conflicting realitiesaugmented and virtual, fantastically rumored and harrowingly truetowards an impossible conclusion. Exploded View is the story of a city frozen in crisis, haunted by hardship and overwhelmed by refugees, where technology gives everyday citizens the power to digitally reshape news in real time, and where hard video evidence is impotent against the sheer, unrelenting power of belief. After all, when anyone can forge their own version of the truth, what use is any other reality? Praise for Exploded View "A police procedural that says as much about the present day as it does about the culture of the near-future. With an ending that will leave you reeling, Exploded View forces you to question everything you think you know about reality."--Richard Cox, author of The Boys of Summer "The book's powerful themes, the relationship of police to policed, trust in governmental authority, trust in the media, immigrant tensions, and generational changeare sharply executed . . . [Exploded View] might just leave you hesitating before taking the next reblogged video at face value."--Kirkus "The writing is raw and the dialogue is real; Exploded View is not a story of what could be, but what may well be, and in the not-too-distant future, at that."--Steven John, author of Outrider and Three A.M. Sam McPheeters was born in 1969 and raised in Albany, NY. Starting in 1989, he led several punk bands, including NY's Born Against. Since 2009, he has written for The Believer, Chicago Reader, Criterion, The Stranger, Vice, and The Village Voice. His first novel, The Loom of Ruin, was published in 2012.
Paco and George welcome the multi-talented Sam McPheeters. They discuss the 2011 documentary Samsara, a non-narrative film directed by Ron Fricke and produced by Mark Magidson, who also collaborated on Baraka (1992), a film in a similar vein. Samsara was filmed over five years in 25 countries around the world. It was shot in 70 mm format. Sam McPheeters is an American artist, journalist, novelist, and performer. Raised in Albany, New York, he became a published author at age 12, with Travelers' Tales,a collection of regional folklore. Ep. 136 - Del Posto pastry chef and former Born Against drummer Brooks Headley is our podcast guest this week. His cookbook "Fancy Desserts" just won Food 52's Piglet Tournament so we flip through it and cover the important topics, like "there's no such thing as selling", "how Ian McKaye is like sbrisolona" and "why music and cooking do not mix". Plus Brooks tells us the best vegetarian touring band story we've ever heard, and opens up about the tour food diary he kept secret from his band.
This show was a total mind blower for me as I got to speak to one of the more influential people within the mid-90's hardcore scene, Sam McPheeters. He fronted the highly polarizing band Born Against (as well as Men's Recovery Project) and later sang in Wrangler Brutes. He is also a highly prolific freelance writer and amazing author. Our conversation hit on perspective, anger and the writing process. Ben Acker (@bnacker on Twitter) and Ben Blacker (@BenBlacker on Twitter) are the co-creators of the Thrilling Adventure Hour (http://thrillingadventurehour.com), a live radio-style comedy production at The Largo in Los Angeles. They discuss their writing projects and tell stories about putting on their star-studded stage show. They also quiz Gene to see if he actually likes anything, heed Brodie's warning about the dangers of Jamba Juice machinery, and debate the age-old question - Garrison Keillor: homophobe or curmudgeon? Also, the music of Born Against.
This week on The Food Seen Michael sits down with perhaps the first combination pastry chef/hardcore band member to grace the show. Brooks Headley, pastry chef at Del Posto and former drummer of seminal hardcore band Born Against, joins the band's singer Sam McPheeters for a discussion about eating, touring, and balancing creativity between food and music.
