How does the rise of AI and surveillance intersect with motherhood? In this episode, Sophie Hamacher and Jessica Hankey, creators of the groundbreaking anthology, Supervision: On Motherhood and Surveillance, delve into the ways mothers' behaviors and bodies are observed, exposed, and policed in today's society. The conversation broadens to encompass the unique experiences of BIPOC mothers, who find themselves in a paradoxical state of both hyper-visibility and invisibility. Sophie and Jessica underscore the importance of community motherhood, sharing examples that challenge societal norms and resist government neglect in areas such as reproductive healthcare and childcare. Through it all, Sophie and Jessica underscore the urgency of studying surveillance in our daily lives and its implications for equality and justice. Some topics we cover include: Benevolent vs. oppressive surveillance The impact of state surveillance on reproductive rights, particularly in the context of abortion restrictions and the overturning of Roe v. Wade How advertisers exploit fears and insecurities to sell products Historical instances of the state using claims of benevolence to justify harmful surveillance policies Experiences of BIPOC mothers being hyper-visible yet invisible Importance of community motherhood and redefining traditional models Hope found in collaborative efforts, dialogues, and alternative models of living Transcription is available here Buy Supervision: On Motherhood and Surveillance -- Become a Patron for access to bonus content and to support the podcast, or buy me a (metaphorical) coffee Follow us: Instagram | Twitter | Facebook | Tik Tok | Youtube | LinkedIn Subscribe to our newsletter for a weekly dose of all things WOMAN We need more women's stories in the world!. "Everything on the land is reflected in the sky. So if you want to learn about indigenous astronomy, You have to learn about everything."This week we welcome Duane Hamacher to the HPS podcast as he discusses Indigenous science and its importance in the Australian context. Duane is a professor of astronomy who focuses on Indigenous astronomy, its history, and its present role in our knowledge systems. He works with elders from Indigenous groups across the world to bring to light the history of astronomy in their culture, and how we can appreciate and learn from it today. He discusses with us the importance of considering Indigenous knowledge systems, be they oral, dance, or art, and their validity amongst Western science, and the importance of not dismissing that which looks different from what we might have previously been taught. At the University of Melbourne, Duane teaches a course called Indigenous Astronomy, run through the physics department, which highlights for students that there is more than one way of knowing, the synergy which exists between different modes of knowing, and how this fits in with the rest of their schooling at the university. Indigenous and Western ways of knowing are not disparate ideas, but run in parallel.A transcript of this episode can be found here: https://www.hpsunimelb.org/post/duane-hamacher-transcript-s2-e4Some links related to this episode can be found below:Book - Disciplining the Savages: Savaging the Disciplines by Martin Nakata Book - The First Astronomers - How Indigenous Elders Read the Stars by Duane HamacherArticle - Stars that vary in brightness shine in the oral traditions of Aboriginal Australians (theconversation.com) by Duane Hamacher Book Chapter - Safeguarding Indigenous Sky Rights from Colonial Exploitation by Karlie Alinta Noon, Krystal De Napoli, Peter Swanton, Carla Guedes, Duane HamacherArticle - Dismantling the Divide Between Indigenous and Scientific Knowledge by Arun AgrawalThanks for listening to The HPS Podcast with your current hosts, Samara Greenwood and Carmelina Contarino. You can find more about us on our blog, website, bluesky, twitter, instagram and facebook feeds. In recent decades, various forms of Buddhist practices have become more and more popular. The stories of profound life transformations through Buddhism are plentiful and the benefits of Buddhist forms of meditation are continuously reported by both practitioners and researchers. However, compared to other religious communities, Buddhism and in particular Zen Buddhism has been considered rather immune from allegations of sectarian scandals such as teacher abuse of authority and trust for economic, sexual, or other self-interested purpose. In this podcast I talk with Christopher Hamacher, zen Buddhist practitioner and daily leader of the Zen Dojo am Ostbahnhof in Munich, about both the merits and beauties of Zen Buddhism and about some of the deplorable cases of abuse in zen communities that Christopher has written about. Christopher has a degree in law from Universite de Montreal from 1994, currently works as a translator in Munich, and has been practicing Zen Buddhism since 1999 in both Japan, America, and Europe. We begin our conversation talking about Zen Buddhism, how it is practiced, and how Christopher became acquainted with the tradition. We then move on to discuss some of the unfortunate cases of student abuse with which Christopher also became familiar through his Zen Buddhist practice. Based on his thorough research into two cases of misconduct by teachers in a German and an American zen Buddhist community, Christopher abstracts some characteristics that are often common in abusive spiritual/religious leaders, and we further discuss how certain aspects of Zen Buddhism can be used as means of justification for abusive behaviour in zen communities. Finally, we talk about some constructive ways to create a safe, healthy, and inclusive community of spiritual practice.I found the conversation with Cristopher very valuable and important – not only in terms of Zen Buddhism but in the light of the heightened interest in spiritual practice more generally – and I hope you will benefit from it too.ResourcesYou can find Christopher's article ‘Zen has No Morals' here. For German speaking readers, here is a recent interview with Christopher on the case of Klaus Zernickow and the legal case that Zernickow raised against Christopher. In 2017, Christopher participated at the conference of the International Association of Cultic Studies.

This interview is with Eric Hamacher of Hamacher Wines . In this interview, He begins the interview by describing why he came to Oregon and how he became invested in the Oregon Wine industry. Later on he discusses the influence that 2020 had on the industry, including the impact of COVID-19 and the Oregon fires. Eric speaks about the loss of his 2020 harvest due to the wildfire smoke, but also how those from New Zealand, Australia, and California - who have dealt with the threat from fires in previous years - were ready to offer advice. Providing just another example of how supportive the wine industry can be. Eric specifically mentions the kindness that Oregon winemakers have. The history of the Oregon wine industry has always had moments that are filled with, as Eric says, serendipity, synchronicity, and goodwill. Eric's stories show that in a state filled with mostly small wineries and vineyards, this supportive nature has kept it alive. This interview was conducted by Rich Schmidt at Hamacher Wines on January 12, 2021.

Jim Hamacher is our guest speaker this week, discussing forgiveness to support us in our current Faith Works message series. He shows us that to be angry is not a sin, but we should not allow that anger to cause us to sin. Forgiveness is freeing of resentment and more beneficial for the person giving forgiveness than the person being forgiven.

On the latest edition of the Politically Speaking podcast, St. Louis Public Radio's Jason Rosenbaum, Jo Mannies and Rachel Lippmann welcome Patrick Hamacher to the program. Hamacher is one of four Democrats running for St. Louis circuit attorney. Incumbent Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce is not running for re-election, which likely contributed to the larger-than-normal field. The winner of the Aug. 2 primary will likely be Joyce's successor, since St. Louis is heavily Democratic.
BONUS FRODUS!!! Jason gosh-darned Hamacher is so funny he doesn't fit into one podcast. So...here it is. The official "Team Bum-Out" story. Chris and Greg of Dillinger Escape Plan added to Jason's mischievious ways and this is one the funniest story I've ever heard. Then, there's the legendary prank phone call to G Gordon Liddy live on his show? But wait...how you gonna top that? Ok. How about almost getting gunned down at Jesus' tomb? I do this because I love you. Take care. Bye-bye. Chapter 57 Notes: Jason's Lost Origin Site: http://lostorigins.com Jason's latest band (with J Robbins...yeah. Oh my God. I thought I'd have to tape up my ribs. Jason Hamacher of Frodus is about as unique as they come. Drummer of Frodus, Regents, Zealot (and about a dozen other bands you've heard of) joins me and guest host Seth W for TWO podcasts! This is the first of the two. I tried to make this one wrap up but Jason...is Jason. Story after story after story made me so thankful I didn't hit the stop button. Hamacher talks Frodus, his land breaking and nothing short of historic relationship with Syria, we get heavy Christian theology, the super touching story of Jason's life from 1999-2003 that changed all the directions, massaging Ben from Dillinger Escape Plan...just hang on. It was just too good for one podcast. Chapter 56 Notes: Jason's Lost Origin Site: http://lostorigins.com Jason's latest band (with J Robbins...yeah. The science of astronomy has existed for thousands of years and forms a vital part of Indigenous Australian culture. Ben Ashmole/flickr, CC BY-NCAboriginal and Torres Strait islander people have between 40,000 and 60,000 years of pre-colonial history that includes stories of constellations they observed in the night sky and traditions that align with the stars and the moon. But until recently, these stories were largely dismissed by the scientific community. Researchers are now finding that Indigenous oral traditions contain vast environmental and scientific intelligence. These complex knowledge systems have helped Indigenous people survive Australia for tens of thousands of years. "The kids will have their say" when Jason Hamacher (drummer of Frodus/Decahedron/Combatwoundedveteran/Regents/Battery) shows up "at the Wilson Center" with a literal suitcase full of super-memorable worst gigs. From infiltrating Latino biker gangs in Montana to playing high school graduations in Nebraska to gutting skinheads in DC to what lead to the break-up of Frodus, Jason delivers the goods. Not content with a buttload of killer 90's punk/hc tales? We also discuss Jason's time in Syria and his work documentating ancient religious prayers and songs.
