Not That Kind Of Rabbi with Ralph Benmergui
In his new memoir, Michael Coren recounts his life, from Jewish cabbie's son to Anglican priest

Michael Coren has lived many lives. Born to a Jewish cab driver in England, Coren converted to Catholocism in the 1980s, then Evangelicalism in the '90s; he grew into a bombastic right-wing Christian talk radio and TV personality with shows on the Sun News Network and the Crossroads Television System; then he came back to embrace the Catholic Church, before finally leaving again to become not just an Anglican—but an Anglican priest. Coren's spiritual malleability—including open repentance for insulting comments he made about queer people decades ago, and the journey he's taken to fundamentally change various political opinions—is at the heart of his new memoir, Heaping Coals: From Media Firebrand to Anglican Priest, published in October 2024. In it, he recounts how he never considered how hard it was for his parents when he left his home country for Canada, and how his perspective on Christian values has changed, while the role of Christiandom has shifted in the broader Western world. Coren sits down with fellow former broadcaster Ralph Benmergui for a frank talk about his numerous mea culpas, handling backlash on social media and the profound difficulty in forgiveness. In this two-part series, historian Paul Ham traces how our definition and understanding of the human soul has transformed over thousands of years. Humans have been probing their own invisible inner voice since the Stone Age. But where did the concept of the soul even come from? And is it really what separates the living from the dead?Historian and writer Paul Ham has traced how our definition and understanding of the human soul has changed over thousands of years.Human beings have been probing their own inner voice, what it means and how it makes us feel, since the Stone Age.The human soul has long thought to be an invisible, inner essence that makes each of us distinctively different from the rocks and trees, and which also separates the living from the dead. But where did it come from? Who invented the concept of the soul? And do we still believe in the soul as inextricably linked to the human spirit? In this two-part series, Paul investigated first what the pre-modern world called 'the soul'. In this episode, he explores how the concept of the soul disappeared, and became 'the mind' in the modern era. This episode touches on ancient history, philosophy, neurology, religion, death, epic storytelling, faith, exploration and memory.

Catholic bishop blesses newly out trans man who serves as a church “hermit”LGBTQ Nation, By John Russell , on May 26, 2024https://www.lgbtqnation.com/2024/05/catholic-bishop-blesses-newly-out-trans-man-who-serves-as-a-church-hermit/ In this segment we delve into the paradoxical plight faced by individuals straddling their LGBTQ identity and their loyalty to religious doctrine, particularly within the rigid confines of Catholicism. Matson's audacious act of publicly embracing his trans identity while cloaked within the traditionally reclusive sphere of a Hermit represents a significant rupture in the facade of the Church's antiquated beliefs and exclusionary practices.Amidst the entrenched dogma of the Catholic Church, Matson's revelation as a trans Hermit serves as a striking indictment of the institution's failure to adapt to the evolving landscape of gender and sexuality. By thrusting himself into the spotlight, Matson exposes the hypocrisy and bigotry entrenched within the Church's teachings, challenging the hierarchy's authority and laying bare its complicity in perpetuating discrimination against LGBTQ individuals. The article sheds light on the covert nature of Matson's existence as a Hermit, highlighting the Church's deliberate efforts to conceal his trans identity and maintain the facade of conformity to traditional gender norms. His subversive act of defiance within the confines of his hermitage illuminates the oppressive nature of religious institutions and their complicity in stifling the authentic expression of gender identity and sexual orientation.Matson's journey serves as a beacon of resistance against the oppressive structures of the Catholic Church, symbolizing the irrepressible spirit of LGBTQ individuals who refuse to be silenced or marginalized. His courageous stance challenges the Church to confront its own biases and embrace a more inclusive and affirming theology that celebrates the diverse tapestry of human identity. As society grapples with issues of LGBTQ rights and religious freedom, Matson's story serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and acceptance. His defiance against the suffocating grip of religious orthodoxy inspires hope for a future where individuals are free to embrace their true selves without fear of condemnation or persecution. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.23.4 featuring Scott Dickie, Kara Griffin, Cindy Plaza and Jason FriedmanBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

Bishop Of Killaloe Says Reduction In Clare People Identifying As Catholic 'No Surprise'

The Bishop of Killaloe has described the reduction in people identifying as Catholic in Clare as no surprise. New census data shows that a record 16,000 people in this county claimed to have no religion last year. As it stands, 95,000 people in this county are currently practicising in the Catholic faith, representing 74% of Clare's population. Although this figure is above the national average of 69%, the figure has fallen by 9% here in just the last six years. Additionally 27 of Clare's 58 parishes have no resident priest under the age of 75. Bishop of Killaloe, Fintan Monaghan says while the figures are discouraging its vital that the church continues to play a very important role in people's lives. Catholocism's loss however has been reflected in a major endorsement of secular services in Clare. Last year , 15% of all marriages in this county were conducted in a humanist ceremony while just five years ago just twelve celebrants were practicing in the country, with that number now having grown to 52. The number of people identifying as non-religious in Clare meanwhile has now reached a record high of 16,200, which is up a massive 60% from 2016. Shannon based Humanist Celebrant , Pat Clarke Browne believes the greater inclusivity and choice of non-faith ceremonies is becoming increasingly attractive to all generations.

Can we trust The Bible as our source for truth? Who was the council of Nicaea? Did they make their own version of the Bible we know today? This and many questions are answered by Dr. Judd Burton. Many Christians today barely go deep into scripture and for that reason are easily swayed either towards other religious practices and or atheism. Often in the fringe world the Bible is often claimed to be misunderstood and blended with gnostic, new age, or other religions. We clarify some of these topics in this great conversation with Dr. Judd. Dont forget to spread the fire!
