Raised in the predominantly white and middle-class area of Pinner, Trevor was one of the few black students in his school. Trevor embraced this difference and saw it as an advantage. He became head boy at school and felt that being ‘different' meant being unique and he thrived in his school environment and early life. In 1998, Trevor began his career at Ipsos in the post room, eventually becoming a graduate trainee. After that, he moved to Ernst and Young as a Business and Strategic Analyst, and then to AOL moving up to Head of Consumer Insights. In 2008, while backpacking up a mountain in Argentina, Trevor received a call from Facebook. He flew back for a 15-minute interview and, shortly after, had to cut his travels short in order to start his new role at Facebook a month later. During this time, Trevor met his mentor Blake, who has since guided him through his career. In 2012, Trevor experienced a major change when his mentor Blake called to tell him he had a new job role in New York and needed an answer that same day. Trevor returned to his desk and messaged his wife Ali, to which she replied, "I guess we're moving to New York then." Trevor is now Head of Marketing for Global Business Solutions, EU at TikTok. Trevor is also an Independent Non-Executive Director on the operational board of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), he is a mentor to the England Rugby Football Union (RFU) team and is on the global advisory board of Soho House Group. Today, we chat with VP of Talent Acquisition for Global Business Solutions at Fiserv, Bryan Schreiber. Bryan walks us through how recruitment has changed over the years, whilst still remaining true to a single core philosophy: Building relationships. We get to understand that the more honest a company is and the more they work on building that initial relationship with a potential employee, the more likely they are to find the right candidates and indeed keep them. Key Points From This Episode: Engagement and company culture is what will keep retention numbers up. Many companies are attractive so job seekers are looking at many places at the same time; a big problem for recruiters. It's important to make prospective employees aware of your company's ethos. Successful recruitment can happen in any industry, as long as you know how to engage. In executive recruiting, people generally know exactly what they want. As a recruiter, you should know what you're selling, and keep selling it. It's all about relationship Recruiters and hiring managers should have a great relationship with one another. Behavioral stacks are great indicators for recruiters. It's not a bad idea to stay at one company for a while and build those relationships. Tweetables: “To be able to explain that in a way that a candidate can understand and connect the dots back to their own life, that's engagement.” — Bryan Schreiber [0:17:33] “Gain a real understanding of the environment and the people—those relationships will support you for life, even if you leave.” — Bryan Schreiber [0:36:51] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Talk Talent to Me Hired
South Africa's employment equity laws are set for a major shake up. The National Council of Provinces recently passed the Employment Equity Amendment Bill. The Bill is in its final stage of promulgation as it has been sent to the President for signing. The Bill will amend the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998. The bill promises a shake-up of the country's existing employment equity laws and will give the minister of Employment and Labour the power to speed up transformation in specific business sectors. It does this by empowering the minister to set sector-specific employment equity targets across most of South Africa's major industries. But many businesses say this will have the opposite effect and indeed retard growth and employment However, mere compliance "box- ticking" with these requirements will not produce an inclusive, thriving economy with sustainable empowerment. The precursor to this is quality education and skills development and of a course economic growth To discuss the EE Bill Michael Avery is joined by The Chief Director of labour relations for the Department of Employment and Labour Thembinkosi Mkalipi; CEO of Global Business Solutions, Jonathan Goldberg, a leading voice in Labour Law, Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment and Gerhard Papenfus, CEO of The National employers Association, NEASA…

Grant Wilkinson, Executive, Global Business Solutions joins us to unpack the dynamics of employees' questionable social media remarks and how businesses can manage it. Social media is an extremely powerful tool. No longer is being published on a platform - that the entire world can see - the sole domain of print media and limited to a selected few. Anyone can become a published author thanks to the Internet and social media. This is an incredibly powerful tool; however, some may abuse this power and, in the process, bring their employers into disrepute. The case of Hanniker v One and Only Cape Town (Pty) Ltd – 26 CCMA 8.37.9 illustrates this point: •An employee published a comment on Facebook which allegedly brought his employer (a hotel) and the hotel's security manager into disrepute. •She – the employee – claimed that her comments were valid and were posted in reaction to an incident that the security manager was negligent.
