THE REAL JERRY LEWIS STORY  with Author Rick Saphire & Guest Co-Host TV & Film Actor Eddie Deezen (Grease, Polar Express, 1941, Midnight Madness) Book Excerpt BOMBSHELL: Jerry Lewis' second daughter, born March 23, 1992, was a blessing that brought much joy to Jerry and his wife, and rightly so. Finally, having a daughter he could love and publically call his own was very important to the man who had been previously denied that privilege. Sadly, a legal question arose during the planning stages of the adoption, causing dissension which resulted in a bitter breakup between the comedian and a close lifelong friend, one who had been instrumental in Jerry Lewis' entrance into show business and his rise to fame. Author Rick Saphire was well acquainted with both parties in this matter and was unwittingly thrust into the middle of the firestorm. The author will discuss his personal observations in the book.   The REAL Jerry Lewis Story is not a biography of the famous American comedian but serves as an addendum to all that has been written about entertainer Jerry Lewis in the past. It offers corrections to the myriad of misinformation in past publications, media reports, and legal documents dating back to the day Jerry Lewis was born. The book exposes never-before-revealed details about Jerry Lewis' family, career, and life.   For clarity, Jerry Lewis is the alias, stage name, professional name, and theatrical name of entertainer Jerome Levitch. This book will explain, with the aid of court documentation, that Jerome Levitch's name was never legally changed to Jerry Lewis, despite the fact that he signed that name on legal documents, including his draft card and his final will.   The REAL Jerry Lewis Story is scheduled to be officially announced on March 16, 2024, with a release date shortly thereafter. the author is entertainer and celebrity representative Rick Saphire, who first met Lewis in 1953. As a young performer, Rick Saphire was often referred to in the media as "Jerry Lewis' protégé." Saphire appeared on network TV with Jerry Lewis in the 1960s and was his theatrical representative in the 2000s. The author also had the unique advantage of being close to Jerry Lewis' family, friends, and business acquaintances. Rick Saphire's uncle and mentor, Ernest D. Glucksman, was the executive TV producer and director for Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis during their peak period in movies, and on television. when Jerry Lewis went solo, Glucksman remained Lewis' executive producer while serving as the star's personal manager.   As a child, Rick Saphire was the proverbial “fly on the wall,” witnessing much of the private interactions behind the scenes between Martin & Lewis and with Jerry Lewis himself. Saphire has also represented Jerry and Patti Lewis' oldest son, the rock 'n' roll legend Gary Lewis of Gary Lewis & the Playboys. He has shared his insights with Rick Saphire in preparation for this book.   BREAKING NEWS: The Forward for The REAL Jerry Lewis Story is written by Gary Lewis, who, for the first time, has authorized a frank discussion of family matters, some of which are pretty revealing and surprising.   NOTICE: A special chapter in The REAL Jerry Lewis Story is dedicated to Rick Saphire's attempts to reunite Suzan Minoret with her biological father, Jerry Lewis. Minoret, who called herself Suzan Lewis, contacted the author by phone while she was homeless and living in her car in the State of Florida. She described herself as disabled and desperate to be acknowledged by the man she knew as her birth father. The author's disturbing story of Suzan “Lewis” Minoret is told in-depth for the first time in chilling detail. It is a book within a book with exclusive photographs.   From beginning to end, the story of Jerome Levitch is that of a lonely child from Newark, New Jersey, who spent much of his youth hiding from himself. It's the sad account of a man who portrayed some of the most beloved screen characters of all time, yet he spent much of his life trying to convince his fans that he was much more intelligent and far more sophisticated than the clown they loved. Although temporarily satisfying, Jerry Lewis knew that laughter and applause were no substitute for the safe, warm, and loving childhood Jerome Levitch craved but never knew.

College campuses around the country have been rocked by protests against Israel's war on Hamas, which has claimed the lives of some 35,000 Palestinians, according to health officials in Gaza. Students have established tent encampments and are calling on their universities to divest from companies that support the Israeli occupation. Some universities have cracked down on protesters. Since encampments began at Columbia University on April 17, over 1,000 students have been arrested around the country, and numerous students have been suspended. In Vermont, protesters have formed encampments at Middlebury College, University of Vermont and Sterling College. Both Middlebury and UVM students are demanding financial transparency and calling for their institutions to divest from Israel. Among their other demands, UVM students are calling for the cancellation of the commencement speaker, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Middlebury students are calling for their school to bring students and academics from Gaza, where many universities have been destroyed. In response to student demands, UVM leaders met with protesters and agreed to disclose its endowment investments and discuss the commencement speaker. Leaders of both institutions have so far permitted the protests, though students told me they worried about potential disciplinary consequences. Erica Caloiero, the vice provost for student affairs at UVM, told VTDigger that tents are a violation of university policy but that the school is working with students “to make sure that temporary structures exist in a way that is safe and allowable.”Middlebury College released a statement saying, “As an educational institution, Middlebury values and encourages free expression and the peaceful exchange of ideas—including peaceful protest.”On this Vermont Conversation, we hear voices from the student protest encampments at Middlebury and UVM. Middlebury senior Joshua Glucksman is due to graduate in a few weeks but said he can't think about that. “Every single university [in Gaza] has been rendered dysfunctional by the ongoing Israel campaign of genocide,” he said. “There's no way that in my privilege as a student at Middlebury College, graduation is on my radar right now.” “It just is inconceivable considering the amount of damage and destruction being done right now in Gaza, especially in my name for the perceived idea of Jewish safety, that Israel is waging this genocidal campaign,” said Glucksman, who is Jewish.“This has been the most powerful three days of my career at Middlebury College,” said senior Oliver Patrick. “I feel like I have grown as a person, as an organizer, as a leader, more than I have in my last three years here. But that can't take away from the very serious fact of why we're here, which is that last night, missiles killed children in Gaza. And our university is complicit with that. And I'm willing to perform whatever action or whatever role to help stop that.”UVM senior Lillian Farah, who is from Massachusetts but is of Palestinian descent, was quietly writing with chalk in Arabic, “Free Palestine,” on the sidewalk in front of the UVM protest encampment. A large pole with surveillance cameras loomed overhead, which many students nervously pointed to. Farah said she was unafraid.“Watching people be able to come together for something that they actually believe in, despite threats of suspension, threats of arrest, threats of trespassing citations, it's not enough to scare people away. And I think that that's a very real, very lasting impact of all of this that maybe some people are starting to understand,” she said.“Maybe this is what people need to see that we're not going anywhere. And our voices aren't stopping, and they matter just as much as anybody else's.”

Episode 007- Many food guys share their dreams about one day lining up their passion for food into some sort of food-related business.  James Glucksman is a guy who did just that. After years of kicking the idea around, this native New Yorker wound up leaving his job as a business consultant and opening up a lodge on the other side of the world!  It's called Pen-y-bryn Lodge in Oamaru, New Zealand.  He does all the cooking for the place including making many of the operation's own cheeses, sausages, etc. He'll share his story of how all that happened and he'll also share the story behind his mother's fruitcake recipe. You'll recall that in Episode 004  I explained how I had a hankering to make fruitcake for the holidays this year.  When my mother could not find her recipe, I asked some folks in a Facebook  group called Cookbook Junkies for suggestions. Glucksman suggested his mom's recipe.  It sounded intriguing, so I chose that one to make.  After weeks of lovingly fortifying it with cognac and letting it mature, I finally got to eat it.  In this week's show, you get my reaction and the reaction of my decidedly non-fruitcake liking family. I also used new recipes for an Italian holiday treat called struffoli and for molasses cookies.  On Christmas morning, I also made a ham and cheese strata for breakfast.  It is a very easy, hands-off recipe that is perfect for breakfast or brunch.  For Christmas dinner we had lasagna. We still have quarts of sauce and leftovers in the refrigerator. Santa brought me two books that I have been wanting too! In 2005 Glucksman Ireland House at New York University embarked on a project to bring oral history formally into the classroom. Professors Linda Dowling Almeida and Marion Casey, and later, Miriam Nyhan developed a curriculum that introduced students to the discipline of oral history and gave them an opportunity to create a public history document to complement the interviews they conducted with selected members of the Irish American community in the New York City metropolitan area. Inspired by the success of incorporating oral history into their own research and recognizing that the postwar generation of Irish was aging or slipping away, the professors decided to accelerate their oral history collection. In addition to targeting the community for the classroom program, Professor Nyhan initiated a separate collection project to capture personal and neighborhood memories, particularly from those members of the community involved with the Irish counties associations. We have gathered students and faculty, along with excerpts from their interviews, to reflect on the program in this 20th anniversary year of teaching and programming at Glucksman Ireland House.
