Fatbergs are causing costly plumbing issues and sewage overflow in Vancouver. These rock-like masses of waste form when fat, oil and grease are mixed with non-biodegradable items like wet wipes – which is why wastewater experts want us to think twice about what we put down the toilet and drain.
Send us a Text Message. The opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics is two short days away. As over 10,000 athletes gather in Paris, France, anticipation builds. But that anticipation is not just for the next 19 days of fierce competition, it's also for the Seine. The Seine River is set to host events including the 10 kilometer marathon swim and the triathlon, but as the Games approached, much of the testing showed that the Seine was still teeming with dangerous levels of E. coli and other bacteria. And a lot of people are asking, "why is this river so dirty?" In today's episode, we're going to get into the interesting history of how people have dealt with sewage, from Mesopotamia times to today, and how the Seine, as well as a river Sam knows well — the Potomac — are trying to clean up their acts. We'll dive into questions like, 'Will it ever be legal to swim in the Potomac?' 'Did Thomas Crapper actually invent the cra... um, toilet?' 'How do you clean up dilapidated old mines that are poisoning a river?' and more. durée : 00:02:31 - Le monde est à nous - Comme chaque année au Royaume-Uni, les autorités redoutent que les canalisations soient bouchées par des bouchons de graisse parfois énormes.

Last week the UK government announced plan to ban the sale of wet wipes to deal with the problem of fatbergs in sewers. This week we're rerunning an episode from 2019 where we venture down into the sewer system to see the largest fatberg in Europe. Underneath cities all over the UK subterranean mountains of...
Fatbergs are ‘the bane of utilities' existence'—they exist because many cities take for granted an essential but largely hidden public health tool: urban sewers. In this episode, Natalie Exum, Assistant Scientist in the department of Environmental Health and Engineering, and Baltimore Harbor Waterkeeper Alice Volpitta of Blue Water Baltimore, a nonprofit that serves as a watchdog for the city's water systems, about the immovable clogs that threaten public health in cities across the globe—and what we do about it.
Fatbergs are a menace to public health in our cities, and a potent symbol of neglect of our urban water systems. They're also disgusting to look at. Yet thanks to a glamorous troupe of synchronized swimmers, Fluid Movement Baltimore made them glamorous in the name of public health. Find out how as we go behind-the-scenes of a special video project that reminds us we all have a role to play in keeping our sewers healthy.
Season 2 Ep 51: “I would sponsor a listener to get on that coach and ruin it for you”In the second episode this week Jon Richardson & Matt Forde discuss gravy fountains at weddings, a West Ham fan's naughty antics with a bald man and why it led to a ban, Fatbergs & what bedding they've got on at home at the moment. Breaking up fatbergs, and breaking down plastic with smarter materials. Sewers are a dangerous place, with fat bergs and sulphuric acid, but can they be cleaned up? Portland Cement has helped build the modern world, but does it also cause problems in our sewers? how can we stop our sewers from corroding with better materials? Breaking down plastic takes a long time, but through in a super team of enzymes and it could be done in days. A super team of enzymes helps break down plastic and could lead to a circular economy. In this edition: We discuss whether drug policy is working, why Australia is experiencing megafires, and what can be done about fatbergs. News: Miscarriage and PTSD, and a remarkable refugee professor – We find out how many women experience post-traumatic stress disorder after miscarriage, and learn about the remarkable life of a venerable maths professor. Is drug policy working? – Former government adviser Professor David Nutt tells us how restrictions on tobacco are working, but that hard drugs policies have in some cases made problems worse, and what can be done. Why is Australia facing megafires? – We find out what’s making Australia’s wildfires so bad they have become megafires, including the factors involved in their spread and how much climate change might be to blame. The big, gross problem of fatbergs – Huge accumulations of fat and unflushable material can block drains and city sewers, but how do we work out the best way to prevent them and remove them? This feature is an excerpt from 'Never Lick the Spoon' – a monthly podcast from Imperial's Institute for Molecular Science and Engineering.

Michigan is the Great Lakes State. Detroit is literally named the city of the strait - our river. And one of the most important assets we have, and resources to protect, is our water and our environment. So when I heard Tracie Baker at TEDxDetroit talk about the contaminant soup we live in, my ears perked up. they perked up double when the Assistant Professor at the Institute of Environmental Health Sciences as well as the department of Pharmacology said that those contaminants can even impact our DNA, changing the course of future generations. This is episode 378 of your Daily Detroit. Tracie was kind enough to stop by the north end studio and talk about her work at Wayne State with me and Sven Gustafson. it’s an eye-opening conversation about contaminants, fatbergs. But also, there’s hope as there are people are starting to do to take action.
Whoa, what an episode. Megan ruins everything by enlightening us on the fatberg phenomenon sweeping our cities, then Lauren reminds us that Japanese culture can be pretty fucked up!

Fatbergs are a relatively recent phenomena, clogging our sewage systems and creating a dirty job that costs millions of dollars a year to keep under control. Today our experts take us down into the sewers and break down a dirty, smelly problem that we are all contributing to. Well, well, well…what a year 2018 has been. Brexit has gone bonkers, the Prime Minister is under the cosh, a couple got married and are now expecting a child, football nearly came home and we sizzled in summer as the mercury rose above the levels of Spain. Have we missed anything? It has also been an incredibly yummy year too. We have had an awful amount of with The FoodTalk Show in partnership with Great British Chefs and, recently, the Speciality Magazine. We met new and interesting guests every week and we are putting the cherry atop our year by presenting some of our favourite moments from the past 12 months. Fatbergs, seaweed, cow auctions, sweetie horror stories, stinky cheese, and weedkilling…just some of the many things that standout. We hope you enjoy this special episode and be rest assured that we are working on some new and great material for 2019. Like these snippets and want more? Keeping the world clean is a tricky job. You have to fight fatbergs, recycle large amounts of mess and even keep tanks of food clean. Fortunately material scientists keep inventing new methods, and re-applying old ones to help improve our planet. From using old mining techniques to recycle lithium ion batteries, to using oils to keep food equipment clean, plus tacking the monsters of the sewer - fatbergs. Their efforts may one day change perceptions of fatbergs – turning the lumps of putrid waste into a valuable commodity.
