Good Relations Week

Forward Together Podcast

Last week was Good Relations Week, the annual Community Relations Council event that aims to build relationships between people of different backgrounds in Northern Ireland, including across the traditional Catholic and Protestant divisions and also people of differing ethnicities.  You might say this remains work in progress, which is not the fault of the CRC. Northern Ireland remains a toxically divided society - exemplified, and arguably amplified, by the inability of the two largest parties of the two largest communities to govern together. Northern Ireland's first Good Relations Week was in 1990 – some 33 years ago. The Troubles were still going strong – 81 people died that year, with more civilians killed than either paramilitaries or members of the RUC and army. It wasn't the worst year in the Troubles, but nor was it the best. It was just yet another year that showed that some people here found it impossible to live with others. People died together, instead of living together. 1990 was not just the first year of Good Relations Week, it was also when the Community Relations Council was itself established – the parent of Good Relations Week. CRC's role is to lead and support change towards reconciliation, tolerance and mutual trust. On behalf of The Executive Office, the CRC assists in implementing the Good Relations Strategy, which is called Together: Building a United Community, or T:BUC.  The latest Holywell Trust Conversations podcast discusses the annual Good Relations Week and considers its value. Michael McGlade from the Community Relations Council for Northern Ireland – which funds the podcast and, indeed, this blog – points out that NI has “changed dramatically” since the advent of the CRC and Good Relations Week, not least with the Good Friday Agreement being signed 25 years ago.  “There's been a wholesale change in society since then,” says Michael. He sees Good Relations Week as an opportunity to tell people what is being done on a continuing basis to bring people together – and to give credit to organisations and programmes that are engaged in community reconciliation. “It says, here's things that are going on.”  The Holywell Trust's partner agency, funded by the CRC, is peacebuilding charity The Junction, led by Ruth Gonzavlez-Moore. Community education is at the heart of The Junction's work, including through challenging power imbalances, patriarchy and imperialism, while considering the impact of the history of violence on how society and politics function today.  “The Junction has also delivered and developed healing projects,” says Ruth, “hearing people's stories around lived experience in the conflict.” The Junction seeks to influence how peacebuilding is undertaken. Fiona Corvan, senior programmer for the Holywell Trust, says that some of its events for Good Relations Week tackled very difficult themes, especially around the legacy of the Troubles. “We are conscious that we need to reflect difficult conversations in our work,” she says.  The audience of one production felt challenged by its consideration of events in The Troubles, while admitting they find it difficult to take into account the perspectives of others. Fiona adds that the passing of the Legacy Act made the performance especially poignant, with the play asking “is there a timeline to victimhood?” Fiona questions the role of Good Relations Week for an organisation that focuses on good relations all year round. The ongoing work of Holywell involves hosting conversations between people of differing perspectives not only on the past, but also about the constitutional future. She personally believes that Good Relations Week needs to evolve so that it speaks to those people and communities that at present do not engage in projects such as these. The discussion is available as a podcast at the Holywell Trust website, along with all previous podcasts in the series. Disclaimer: This project has received support from the Northern Ireland Community Relations Council which aims to promote a pluralist society characterised by equity, respect for diversity, and recognition of interdependence. The views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the Community Relations Council.

On the PRmoment Podcast this week we're chatting with Andy Peake, London CEO of creative agency VCCP. I've known Andy for about 25 years so, to an extent, we've followed each other's careers with interest over a couple of decades! As Andy is now CEO of one the largest creative agencies in London I thought it would be interesting to get him on the show to chat about the intersection of PR firms and advertising agencies. VCCP London has 850 employees and according to Nielson Billings Rankings is the UK's highest billing creative agency with £483 m in billings, in 2022. Up 34% from £360m in 2021.The agency was founded in 2002 and is owned by Chime, which also owns the PR agencies Good Relations and Harvard.Chime is majority-owned by private equity firm Providence Equity Partners. The intersection between PR firms and advertising firms has become an interesting one - because if you listen to a PR firm describe itself and an advertising firm describe itself, you'd think they have become basically the same or very similar. But they seem to rarely compete for briefs and clients' budgets - and we'll be discussing that and no doubt much more on today's PRmoment Podcast today. Before we start, if you haven't already do take a look at our new event PR Masterclass: The Agency Growth Forum. At this one event, 22 experts will give 11 Masterclasses on essential elements of managing a modern, profitable and successful PR firm. Also, a reminder that the final entry deadline for the ESG Awards is 29th September 2023.Finally, thanks so much to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors of the PRCA.Here is a summary of what Andy and PRmoment founder Ben Smith discussed on the show:2.30 mins As far as many PR people are concerned advertising agencies wedded themselves to producing 30-second TV ads that no one watches any more. So what have advertising agencies become?5 mins What types of discipline specialists does VCCP have?8 mins How does an advertising agency differ from a PR firm?“The simplest way of categorising what different parts of the agency do is into paid, earned and owned and there's obviously an enormous amount of overlap now.”12 mins Andy talks about why he thinks don't PR firms and advertising agencies compete against each other more often.15.30 mins How much tension is there between a long-term strategic view of a brand strategy, with the need to respond to a news hook or an event?19.30 mins Agency-wise we're living in an era of specialism over the generalist. PR firms have more specialists than ever - but Andy talks us through the extent of specialism within VCCP.22.30 mins With the level of specialisation in agencies now, is there a danger that everything just takes too long? How do you remove bureaucracy and hierarchy from a multi-specialised agency structure?“The client shouldn't feel like there dealing with a big group of people.”24.30 mins From the client's perspective, has the buying of marketing services either become or, is in danger of becoming, too confusing and too messy?“You've got to find a way of constructing yourself as an agency, and as a client, that is going to make that experience for the customer as seamless and consistent as possible.”27.30 mins How is the creative market for VCCP at the moment? If 2022 was an 8/10 where is the market now?“You have to be winning new business. There are going to be reasons, which are completely out of your control, that mean some clients are not going to spend as much next year as they

Here we visit about what horses and humans need to know. By that we mean the skills and the knowledge that horse and rider need to have in order to, as we say as part of our podcast mission, feel safe and have fun. I hope you all bear in mind that this ain't dogma coming down from above. We could be wrong. Our work with horses is constantly evolving and we build on experience, on successes as well as mistakes. As we acknowledge, this is tip of the iceberg stuff. We hope you'll write in to give us your tip of the iceberg stuff. Some lean towards principles while other ideas are more technical. In the best mix, they meet at a place which emphasizes SAFETY and GOOD RELATIONS with the horse.  Some things horses should know: To load easily into a trailer To remain tied for decently long periods of time without getting overly stressed To pick up feet easily To stand when mounted and not walk off To yield to pressure To accept new stimuli without ‘losing it' Some things riders should know: To take vital signs (respiration and heart rate, temperatures, and to know signs of dehydration) and to be able to do basic doctoring To mount from the ground To be fit enough to ride confidently (and to call yourself an athlete!) To recognize how our energy and actions impact our horses There are many videos and pages to consider around these topics. Check out Amy Skinner's YouTube channel.  Read about Ownership here. We thank Pharm Aloe Equine and Lucerne Farms for their fantabulous support. Pharm Aloe offers aloe pellets and gel and other products to support horses' GI health, immune system, and other processes. They have profiles of the quality of their products on their website. Lucerne Farms is a forage company based in Northern Maine. Timothy Nunan is a Lecturer (Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter) and a Freigeist Fellow at the Center for Global History at the Free University of Berlin. He is the author of Humanitarian Invasion: Global Development in Cold War Afghanistan (Cambridge UP, 2016). In this lecture he discusses how the Islamic Republic of Iran was founded on the slogan of “Neither East Nor West”–neither alignment with the Soviet Union nor the United States. The end of the 1980s saw, however, a rapprochement between Tehran and Moscow that would form the basis for relations between the countries to the present day. Drawing on archival resources and memoirs from the former Soviet Union, Iran, and Afghanistan, this talk explores how CPSU General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev and Iranian elites such as Hashemi Rafsanjani and Ali Khamene’i abandoned pretensions of leading the global anti-imperialist movement and sought to use relations with the other to navigate world politics between the end of the Cold War and the Gulf War.

Mary Jo Rapini, MEd, LPC, speaker, psychologist, and author, talks about her important work helping people build healthy relationships. Rapini is a noted psychotherapist who specializes in intimacy, sexual issues, and relationships. Rapini is a celebrated author, lecturer, and frequent television personality. Rapini's stated mission is to help others build healthy relationships, and that process begins with the relationship we have with ourselves. Rapini talks about her extensive work with individuals and couples dealing with sexual issues, physical and emotional. She discusses some of the major issues that many people deal with, and how these problems can catch up to us quickly. While pills work for some people, grief and emotional issues/stressors can promote feelings of anger and depression that may not be solved by pills. Therapy may be the answer for those who are suffering. Rapini discusses marriage and emotional maturity, and the reasons why some marriages have trouble. She talks about cognitive behavioral therapy and its importance to her therapy practice. She outlines some of the many social problems that lead people to therapy. As she states, in order for therapy to work, the person must be curious and want to change. She speaks about the importance of awareness, and how we must approach therapy with a self-awareness about what we want to accomplish. The psychotherapist discusses the importance of having purposeful relationships, and the many hallmarks of healthy relationships. What's really important is not so much how you communicate but that you do communicate. She explains that it is important to not compare your marriage to others, and that each partner of the relationship will have their own desires and needs. She talks about the importance of sharing, keeping balance, and accommodating for your partner, and other issues that are critical to maintaining a good, healthy relationship. And she discusses how she deals with many of these issues one on one with her clients.

"In the late 19th Century The British government began a project whereby they started recording oral histories because they were assuming that once the Gold Coast was turned into a colony that it would begin to lose its culture. It really hadn’t happened but in any case there’s lots of oral histories that come out of that and I discovered that eating good food doesn’t really have so much to do with taste, food is very tasty, but it’s more about ensuring that you’re following the prescribed rules for how to behave, how to eat in such a way that you’re propagating good relations with deities or with ancestors"
