If you'd like to join our book discussions, you're always welcome inside the Between the Lines Book Club. The details are in the show notes. Join us for the next chapter. You can join our bookclub here Is This Still the Life I Want? Boogie Wonderland with Kate Halfpenny In this Between the Lines episode, we're talking about Boogie Wonderland — a novel that captures that very specific moment many of us remember all too well: COVID-19 upheaval, career burnout, relationship strain, and the quiet (or not so quiet) question of "Is this still the life I want?" Set against the backdrop of a sea change, Boogie Wonderland explores what happens when life feels out of control — and the pull to step away, reset, and start again. Kate Halfpenny writes beautifully about reinvention, midlife uncertainty, and the messy reality of relationships under pressure. We talk about: Why "starting over" is rarely neat or simple The emotional weight many people carried during COVID — even long after lockdowns ended How place, community, and slowing down can shift perspective The difference between running away and choosing change It's a thoughtful, relatable conversation — especially if you've ever fantasised about packing it all in and moving somewhere by the sea.

Via her popular weekly column for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, Kate Halfpenny is known for speaking her mind, having an opinion and sharing it with the public. And now she’s written a book about her life, marriage, mental health – and the toll her husband’s drinking took on all of it. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll get to hear the inside story of how one column Kate wrote created a maelstrom of fury, which in turn led to the writing of her magnificent memoir Boogie Wonderland. Today I get to talk to Kate about how this book came about, how she dealt with online hate and how her decision to make a sea change from Melbourne's cosy hipster suburb of Collingwood to a sleepy ocean town led to a mid-life reckoning she neither expected nor wanted. What we cover: The surprising column that landed Kate a book deal. Why vulnerability is her greatest storytelling strength. How she handles online hate (including serious threats). Mental health strategies for navigating public backlash. The reality of writing about your own life and the people in it. Tips for pitching stories and landing a column in major publications. How AI is changing the writing business and what Kate’s doing about it. Read the show notes This podcast is brought to you by the Australian Writers' Centre. On Book Matters this month Sam chats to Kate Halfpenny about her memoir Boogie Wonderland, when Covid lockdowns hit Melbourne, metropolitan midlife couple Kate and Chris decide to make a sea change and move to a small coastal town to ease financial pressures and live out the beach lifestyle many of us dream of. But they didn't give much thought to just how different it would be.Then Kiara talks to Sinead Stubbins about her novel Stinkbug, where a select group of employees at an advertising agency are sent to an elite three-day work retreat in the remote mountains. In this wildly original and deeply unhinged story, Sinead Stubbins turns her keen but empathetic eye on the lies we tell about ourselves in order to belong.Connected Libraries WebsiteConnected Libraries Facebook PageIn a nook with a book Facebook GroupConnected Libraries Instagram PageConnected Libraries YouTube

The British and Irish Lions are currently on their tour of Australia and have won the first test in Brisbane. The Lions is all about history and tradition, meaning each evokes the memories of tours gone by. In this case of this tour, the tales being told most often relate to the last time the Lions visited Australian shores, when they made history with their only victorious test series this century. Whilst a Lions tour is about coming together, so often the memories are about an individual. In the case of 2013, the individual of note was Wales fullback Leigh Halfpenny. His record breaking performance won him player of the series back in 2013... but was it even more than that? Was Halfpenny's performance against Australia in 2013 the greatest we have ever seen from a Lion? In this video I will tell the story of Halfpenny's 2013. I'll break down what made him such an exceptional player and how he propelled himself to the Lions XV in Australia, setting records all along the way. On the podcast today we have Paul Halfpenny. Paul is the CTO at Filter, a remote-first digital agency that specialises in open-source tech, as well as a WordCamp speaker. He has an interest in making websites a more personal experience. Website personalisation is the idea of amending content served by your website to match the conditions of your current users. It might be that you want to show (or hide) content to people during certain times of the year. Perhaps it would be helpful to translate content if the user comes from a specific locale. Or maybe you would like to offer a product based upon pages that a user had previously visited, or items that they have bought. All of this falls under the umbrella of personalisation, and it's an area that Paul thinks is going to be more important in the future. We talk about what techniques you can use to offer up personalised content. That could be WordPress plugins or options within blocks, but there are also more complex setups with a whole range of ‘at the edge' technologies. It's an interesting chat with many insights and tips, and so if you're looking to explore this subject further, this episode is for you.

Interview with Steve Halfpenny.I'm very pleased to announce an interview with Steve Halfpenny. I came across Steve many years ago on YouTube while doing a little research on gentle horsemanship. I bought a few of his light hands video tutorials (tapes, not cd's so that shows how long ago it was) I loved his approach and manner with the horses he worked with.I hope you enjoy listening to this interesting and exciting view into the world of Steve Halfpenny at Light Hands Equitation.I loved our conversation and the surprise was I wasn't expecting it to go the way it did, which was a real treat. So sit back, relax and I hope you enjoy this episode, as much as I did recording it.Steve's Halfpenny.Steve Halfpenny is the founder of Light Hands Equitation and Light Hands Horsemanship Program. He travels extensively delivering clinics in Australia, NZ and UK and His specialist style of training is not discipline specific and can easily be applied to any form of riding. Steve has proven that with the right training, any horse can be a relaxed and willing riding partner.Steve's key focus has been to find an easier way for the horse and rider to communicate, creating simpler ways of explaining horsemanship to people, so that they can better understand the horse's intrinsic nature rather than simply delivering a rote training program. This technique is not only effective for dressage and competition, but is also highly beneficial for anyone looking to build their horse's gymnastic ability, create softness in their horse and improve communication between themselves and their equine partners.https://www.stevehalfpenny.comhttps://www.facebook.com/light.hands.... Once you have established your mission and purpose, if you don't know how to communicate that effectively, it can all fall a little flat. The media won't run with your story, customers won't connect with the brand, and you won't be able to reach your full potential. This is why truly great copywriting is so important in elevating your brand. My guest today, Kate Halfpenny is a copywriter who I have had the pleasure of working with for many years. In fact, Kate is the one that came up with my line, “Drew Barrymore ended my PR career”. This one sentence helped to shape my brand Powerful Stories and perfectly encapsulates what led to my career change. It has a shock value. It has intrigue. It makes you want to learn more about my story. Powerful copy will produce powerful results. Kate Halfpenny has written for 30 years for Australian magazines, newspapers and digital websites including the Sydney Morning Herald, The New Daily and Who. She founded Bad Mother Media after facing her turning point last year during the pandemic working in a job she no longer felt aligned with. A self-confessed city woman who loved the heels, the power suits and the city buzz, Kate decided that she needed to make a huge shift. She swapped the heels for bare feet and moved to the beach to run her business Bad Mother Media and live a life she has designed. In this episode, Kate opens up about where her entrepreneurial journey began, building her own brand, and working with amazing clients to write their personal and professional copy. She divulges her powerful moment interviewing Chris Hemsworth and the advice she gave him that would ultimately impact her own future. This episode is packed with helpful tools that you can use to write your own copy and Kate was so generous with her knowledge. Don't make your copy an afterthought. Think about what you want to say, and how to communicate it to the world to make an impact. A once-in-a-lifetime job opportunity that turned toxic was the catalyst for leading journalist Kate Halfpenny to turn her hand to content writing. And what a journey she's been on ever since. She shares the highs and lows and lessons learnt here. Bad mothers. Boogie boarding. Bad jobs that make us question our worth and ability. Making a sea change. Life. Death. Empty nesting. What's all this got to do with copywriting? Well, a lot actually because my guest today is Kate Halfpenny, one of Australia's most successful journalists. As the executive editor of Who magazine for 24 years, chief of staff for The New Daily newspaper for many years, and a writer for The Age and other leading publications, Kate moved from journalism into a marketing communications role – and absolutely hated it! That experience forced her to confront what she really wanted to do, where she really wanted to live, who she really wanted to spend time with, and part of that reinvention was to become a content writer and a highly sought after one, at that. That's what it's got to do with copywriting. In this episode, Kate and I discuss: What's being a ‘bad mother' really mean and why it might actually be a good thing Why she took a communications role and why it ended so badly How to pitch to the media and get your stories picked up How to ‘bug' journalists without being annoying How to come up with great ideas How to navigate transitioning from motherhood to empty nesting Why life is too short to be anything less than honest How to deal with rejection How to know when the copy you write is good or not The 7 step structure for writing content How to make a sea change Why we love Guy Pearce Mentioned in this episode: Kate Halfpenny on LinkedIn Read the show notes Join our community of copywriters at CopyClub.com.au. Inveigle, a word that dates from the 16th century, refers to the act of using clever talk, trickery, or flattery either to persuade somebody to do something or to obtain something, but etymologically the word is linked to eyesight—or the lack thereof. Inveigle came to English from the Anglo-French verb enveegler, meaning "to blind or hoodwink someone," from the adjective enveugle, meaning "blind." Enveugle derives from the Medieval Latin ab oculis, a phrase which literally translates to "lacking eyes."
