Stories from the Field: Demystifying Wilderness Therapy

Sarah Stusek of Stusek Studios has worked in the film and television industry since childhood. When she was 17 years old she was brought to a wilderness therapy program in Montana called Three Rivers. The transporter told her, "You should write a book about this" and now, 13 years later, she has finished the book and it will soon be a motion picture. Sarah shares her challenging journey into the wilderness and how it changed her life. She shares her thoughts about the field, her book, and the film. Bio from Stusek Studios Website: Has been in the film and television industry since 1995, working on Emmy award-winning projects like HBO's VEEP and NETFLIX's HOUSE OF CARDS.  Bio from Three Rivers Section of Stusek Studios: Wilderness-based therapy has helped so many, how many more can we reach through film? Growing up today in this chaotic society is tough. Taking a break from the noise that surrounds us would be beneficial to anyone. No noise, cell phones, internet or connection to society. I am Sarah Stusek, the filmmaker behind Three Rivers. Producer Wendy Geary and I met while working on the hit EMMY award winning HBO's VEEP seven years ago and have worked toward making this film together ever since. More about us in a minute, let's get back to THREE RIVERS! When I was seventeen-years-old I attended a wilderness program that completely changed my outlook on life -- I lived in the backcountry of Montana in the middle of winter for three months. I was in a co-ed group of other teenagers labeled "troubled or at-risk youth" that had to work both together as well as independently to literally survive the program-in-the-woods. I learned not only lessons about nature and survival skills, but the importance of communication and cooperation. However, by far the most important lessons I learned were about myself. These were not always easy lessons to learn, but I kept at it. After I learned to confront my feelings I began to understand them. I learned what my strengths were and how to rely on myself. I learned where I had weaknesses and what I needed to do to work on them. I learned about teamwork and that I can rely and trust other people. I learned to let go of little things and live more. I learned that the most important relationship in my life is the one I have with myself. Although it was one of the most difficult things I have accomplished, my experience was an unforgettable one, and one that I know I will continue to lean on every day of my life and I want the world to be able to have this experience as well. The picturesque backdrop of Montana is almost a character in itself. With the beautiful mountains and the frozen snow, the nature leads the story. I went to wilderness therapy in 2007 and its taken me 12 years to get to a place where I could separate myself from this story. So this is a story of Stella. A teenager of today, way more famous and cooler than I will ever be. We hope you join us on this journey.

In this episode the legendary Tzi Ma of the hit series WU Assassins chats with your favorite host Galaxy about his experience is movies and television.  Tzi Ma was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the United States at a young age. Together with his parents and four of his siblings, he worked in a family-owned restaurant on Staten Island, New York, where he still has his elementary school friends he's in touch with. One of the most prolific and versatile actors working today, Tzi Ma has worked alongside many of the biggest names in Hollywood. He honed his craft in many of the off-Broadway and regional theaters shows, and worked with acclaimed playwright David Henry Hwang on his first two plays FOB, and The Dance and the Railroad (a play specifically written for Tzi) at the Public theater, and with Eric Overmyer on In Perpetuity Throughout the Universe (also specifically written for Tzi) at the Hudson Guild and Baltimore Center Stage to name a few. His first acting role on the screen was in Ullie Lommel's cult jet-set film Cocaine Cowboys alongside Jack Palance and Andy Warhol in 1978. The claim to fame for that film was that the Nassau county police department at Montauk Point mistook them for real cocaine dealers, confiscated many duffel bags of powdered sugar and production cash and held up production for several days. Most recently, Tzi played the pivotal role of General Shang in Denis Villeneuve's Arrival, a film with Amy Adams which was both critically acclaimed and a box office success. From his role as Hinh, a deadly-efficient assassin and nationalist triple-agent masquerading as Michael Caine's assistant in The Quiet American, to his hilarious, lit-cigarette-swallowing take on The General in Joel and Ethan Coen's The Ladykillers, Tzi always delivers the unexpected. Over the years, he has amassed a distinguished body of work and has come to be a household face. Of course, audiences will always remember Tzi's Counsel/Ambassador Han from Rush Hour and Rush Hour III. His other favorite major film credits include Million Dollar Arm, Dante's Peak, Akeelah and The Bee, Chain Reaction, and Rapid Fire Tzi is also a firm believer in supporting indie films, particularly involving Asian-Canadian or Asian-American writers, directors, and producers. These films include Golden Gate written by David Henry Hwang, which centers around the unjust treatment of the Chinese American community during the McCarthy era; Catfish in Black Bean Sauce by writer/director Chi Muoi Lo, which tackles the lighter side of race relations, family dynamics, and love between an Asian American man and an African American woman; Red Doors by writer/director Georgia Lee - a re-imagining of Shakespeare's The Tempest in an Asian American setting; Formosa Betrayed Produced by Will Tiao, who examines the desire for Taiwanese independence springing from the "white terror" incident; #1 Serial Killer by writer/director Stanley Yung, a rare Asian American horror film; Pali Road by writer/director/producer Jonathan Lim, a psychological mystery thriller love story; Mike, Mike Tan by writer/director Aimee Long, which deals with a Chinese American cop who accidentally kills an Africa American man in the line of duty; and Meditation Park by writer/director/producer Mina Shum, who takes on the challenge of telling the experiences of a first-generation immigrant woman's journey of self-discovery and growth toward independence. His portrayal as Bing, the husband in Mina's Meditation Park garnered Tzi a Best Actor in A Leading Role Nomination from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. Through their talented and diverse voices, we share with the world our stories. Notable recurring roles on television includes, the Dragon in ABC's Once Upon a Time; General Onoda in Amazon's The Man in the High Castle; Tao in AMC's Hell on Wheels; President Lu Chi Jang in HBO's Veep; Yao in HBO's Silicon Valley; Ambassador Lu in ABC's Commander in Chief; Cheng Zhi in FOX's 24 and 24:Live Another Day; Dr. Henry Lu in CBS's City of Angels; Det. 1991's tear-jerker "My Girl" ♪has got storm clouds on a sunny day It wasn't cold outside when they killed off Thomas J Well I guess you'd say What can make me feel this way? Dead kid (dead kid, dead kid) Talkin' 'bout dead kid (dead kid)♪ This nostalgic coming-of-age story could appropriately be titled "American Horror Story" with its ghoulish setting and the fact that it repeatedly bashes the audience over the head with disturbing events until they are left huddling in the corner, weeping. Anna Chlumsky of HBO's "Veep" plays Vada Sultenfuss, a precocious hypochondriacal 11 year old whose mother died in childbirth and whose emotionally-distant father raises her in an operational funeral home where she is constantly exposed to death. Also, her sweet grandma who moved in with them to help out is stricken with advanced Alzheimer's disease (which is used for comic relief in this movie). Also, her favorite teacher turns out to be a creep who is playing emotional mind games with her. Also, her best friend dies. So, you know, normal kid stuff.  Macaulay Culkin plays Thomas J, a nice young boy who loves Vada with all of his little heart and does his best to help her cope with the difficulties of her childhood until the filmmakers unleash a hive of bees upon him and murder him for their own sick purposes. Dan Aykroyd plays Harry Sultenfuss, a small-town mortician who became dead inside on the day of his daughter’s birth due to the death of his wife. He drifts along as a shadow of his former self and is completely oblivious of the emotional needs of the people around him until he starts getting laid and snaps back to life. Jamie Lee Curtis plays Shelly DeVoto, a cosmetologist who lives in a stolen motor home and comes to work at the Sultenfuss Funeral Parlor. She quickly decides that she wants to join this ready-made family and puts some serious moves on her new boss to make it happen. Listen to my short conversation with the "Fresh Off the Boat" star, as well as an excerpt from his speech accepting the 2017 APAICS Vision Award. Oddly, I forgot to ask him if politics was in the cards for him. Writing and producing was. But politics? He does play a governor in HBO's "Veep."  As I flew into D.C., I noticed at the airport magazine racks the conservative National Review trying to make the case for a presidential bid by "The Rock"--a Republican. President Rock? Dwayne Johnson hosted the season finale of "Saturday Night Live" this past weekend, and was joined by Tom Hanks. Hanks said if they ran as a ticket, he'd "get them the senior vote because he fought in WWII--in ten different movies. The Rock added that he'd get the minority vote, "because everyone just assumes, I'm, well, whatever they are."   It got a big laugh.    It sounds like a joke, but given the rise of a reality show star to the presidency and the immense popularity of Johnson and Hanks, you never know. And with that, the SNL banners unfurled to reveal the slogan "Johnson Hanks 2020." Considering that The Rock and Hanks seem like stable personalities with decent vocabularies, anything would be an improvement over the present White House occupant.                       Emil Guillermo is an independent journalist/commentator.   Updates at www.amok.com. "Amok" was considered the most widely-read column on Asian American issues in the U.S. His thoughtful and provocative social commentaries have appeared in print in the San Francisco Chronicle, SFGate.com, San Francisco Examiner, USA Today, Honolulu Star Bulletin, Honolulu Advertiser, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, and in syndication throughout the country.  His columns are seen in Asia and around the world, on Inquirer.net.  His early columns are compiled in a book "Amok: Essays from an Asian American Perspective," which won an American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation in 2000. Guillermo's journalistic career began in television and radio broadcasting. At National Public Radio, he was the first Asian American male to anchor a regularly scheduled national news broadcast when he hosted "All Things Considered" from 1989-1991. During his watch, major news broke, including the violence in Tiananmen Square, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the end of dictatorships in Romania and Panama. From Washington, Guillermo hosted the shows that broke the news.  As a television journalist, his award-winning reports and commentaries have appeared on NBC, CNN, and PBS. He was a reporter in San Francisco, Dallas, and Washington, D.C. After NPR, Guillermo became a press secretary and speechwriter for then Congressman Norman Mineta, the former cabinet member in the Bush and Clinton Administrations.  After his Hill experience, Guillermo returned to the media, hosting his own talk show in Washington, D.C. on WRC Radio. He returned to California where he hosted talk shows in San Francisco at KSFO/KGO, and in Sacramento at KSTE/KFBK. Guillermo's columns in the ethnic press inspired a roundtable discussion program that he created, hosted, executive produced, resulting in more than 100 original half-hour programs. "NCM-TV: New California Media" was seen on PBS stations in San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles, and throughout the state on cable. Guillermo also spent time as a newspaper reporter covering the poor and the minority communities of California's Central Valley. His writing and reporting on California's sterilization program on the poor and minorities won him statewide and national journalism awards. In 2015, Guillermo received the prestigious Dr. Suzanne Ahn Award for Civil Rights and Social Justice from the Asian American Journalists Association. The award, named after the late Korean American physician from Texas, recognizes excellence in the coverage of civil rights and social justice issues in the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. Guillermo, a native San Franciscan, went to Lowell High School, and graduated from Harvard College, where he was named Ivy Orator, the class humorist. Yes, this is Marc Hershon, your host and non-fat dried milk for Epi 128 of Succotash, the Comedy Podcast Podcast. And this is the very first episode of the show to be recorded in front of a LIVE audience! It all went down on Friday, February 5th, at the Comedy Lab, the tiny showroom next door to the world famous Improvisation in West Hollywood, California. Our announcer, Bill Heywatt, and I made the trek from NorCal to SoCal, arriving in time to set up and welcome show guests Dana Carvey, his two sons Dex Carvey and Tom Carvey, and Wayne Federman. (We also had a Burst O' Durst, but Will Durst was making his appearance via recorded medium…) Friend-of-Succotash Rick Overton was slated to be on the show as well, but had to bail as he got cast in an episode of HBO's Veep literally the night before and had to be on set shooting at the same time we were doing the podcast. I want to thank the Sideshow Network's Shawn Marek and his crew for inviting us in and making the whole thing come together. As well as the folks who showed up to watch — 6 PM on a Friday night in LA is a sketchy time to pull off a show and we did it. (I will not be thanking the LA Parking Authority, which slapped me with a $63 ticket because the show ran 10 minutes too late for me to feed my meter…) Suffice it to say, between airfare, the rental car, and the parking tickets, and the dinner I bought some of our guests afterward, this was the most expensive episode of Succotash to date. Which seems a dandy time to remind you that there are several ways to help support the show: • Click our handy Donate button on our homepage, at http://SuccotashShow.com • Click on the Amazon banner at the top of http://SuccotashShow.com and we get a slice off anything that you might happen to purchase during that shopping trip • Click on the link to The Succotashery at http://SuccotashShow.com, purch some merch, and festoon yourself with our logo If money's an issue, you can give us moral support by clicking over to iTunes to rate and review us, Like our page on Facebook, Follow @SuccotashShow on Twitter, "heart" us on SoundCloud and, whenever you get the chance, whether you're with friends, family, co-workers, or total strangers, please remember to pass the Succotash! — Marc Hershon

We talk with the co-creators of the new illustrated children's book, "Archibald's Next Big Thing" - including co-writer Tony Hale (Emmy-Award winning actor for his role on HBO's "Veep", and Buster Bluth from cult-hit "Arrested Development"), co-writer Tony Biaggne, and artist Victor Huckabee. This funny and delightful conversation covers the creative collaborative process by a group of poeple (including artist Misty Manley) working together from around the country whilst juggling day jobs and other commitments. We talk about the real commitment required to take an idea to fruition, and the joy of seeing all that work fully realized and in print.

Improv Nerd With Jimmy Carrane

Dan Bakkedahl is one of the stars of FX's Legit and HBO's Veep, spent two years as correspondent for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and is a veteran of The Second City Chicago. Dan joins Jimmy for a frank discussion of his own securities and how they have effected his career, overcoming those securities, and what it takes to be a great improviser. Improv nerds, this is an episode you won't want to miss!
