Hey everyone! Welcome to a uhmmm A BEEFY MP3!!! As a reward for our marathon live stream for the National Network of Abortion Funds, we said we'd record a podcast about William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996) and BOY DID WE! Enjoy approximately three hours and fourty five minutes of Austin, Ali, Art, Jack and Sylvi chatting about Forbidden Love! Kisses! Fashion! Pools!!! BUT BEFORE THAT, we have some announcements to make about our show and our patreon. FIRST AND FOREMOST, PALISADE IS STARTING ON MARCH 9TH!!!!! WE ARE GOING TO BE DOING A DEBUT STREAM AT TWITCH.TV/FRIENDSATTHETABLE AT 8 PM ET!!!! COME HANG OUT AND BE EXCITED WITH US!!!! (The episode, of course, will also be in the feed at 8 PM!!) Second, IF YOU'RE READING THIS (THANKS) ON MARCH 4TH OR 5TH, go check out twitch.tv/rollplusbond, support Trans Lifeline and hang out while they stream some great tabletop games!!! Third, we're finally making some adjustments to our patreon! We talk about it (AT LENGTH) in this episode, but here's all the changes laid out: $1 - Clapcast. The Clapcast remains unchanged and will continue to be a monthly 20 to 30 minute collection of outtakes and interstitials from various cast recordings. Banter! Jokes! Laughs! $5 - Bluff City or equivalent produced and soundtracked actual play episode once a month. Rather than using this tier to promise more content than we can create, we're using it to focus on the best thing we make: Bluff City or a similar mini-campaign. You might be thinking "But I love Bluff City! What other thing are they going to put here...??" Well, after Bluff City season 2 we're planning on doing a short campaign of Realis, a tabletop system designed by Jack de Quidt and Austin Walker. We will DEFINITELY be returning for a third season of Bluff City, but we're giving this tier a little wiggle room so if we hit any road bumps with creating Bluff City, the feed will still remain consistent month to month with a bonus episode of something very cool and polished. $15 - Live at the Table sponsor + Developers ""Blog"". Instead of being apart of the $5 tier, Live at the Table is becoming a free semi-monthly Twitch stream and it is the patrons at this tier that make it possible. We'll show our appreciation by putting their names on a crawl for our Live at the Table streams and for our Twitch episode rebroadcasts (Bluff City Season 01, rebroadcasting on our twitch SOON!) This tier will also give you access to a new (currently unnamed) podcast, a monthly developers blog/behind the scenes conversation with a few cast members about whatever we've been working on! The show will be a combination of the best of our Pusher content, the vibe of the Drawing Map streams, and our deeper Tips at the Table conversations. Rather than lock these sorts of conversations at the $50 tier OR try to share behind the scenes content across a bunch of different types of rewards, we'll have one episode a month that is more focused, more constinent, and more relevant to our current output. $25 - Physical Rewards! Postcards! This is staying the same, our postcard catchup is happening this month and then full steam ahead on some great stuff already in production. Amazing artists, in-universe short fiction, these are amazing artifacts from our cool show. Postcard fulfillments are continuing monthly and will remain monthly!! If you join on this tier in March, you will receive the first Palisade card in April! You will receive an email about fulfillment in the third week of April!! If you were supported this tier in Feburary and were charged on March 1st, you WILL get an email in the third week of March about fulfillment for your card (a very cool 6x4 version of our Palisade cover!) If you've been supporting this tier in the past 18 months and have been like uhhhhh, what's going on,,, you should have received an email update about this last week! If you did not, PLEASE email friendsatthetable@gmail.com and we'll get it sorted!! $50 - Credits in our show notes. Wow, what a generous monthly donation. At this level we will put your name in the show credits in the episode description of every main feed episode. You're making everything we do possible and we want to say thanks. $100 - Signed Bookplates and TTRPG book. This tier remains unchanged. After six months and once a year after we will send you a game book of your choice with a signed bookplate affixed inside. These are cool and extremely rare!

It took a while, but we got there! Coming straight out of the gate after the school holidays (who knew having three kids in the house all day would be so exhausting *and* noisy!?) with a no-spoilers review of Brandon Sanderson's latest puppy-killer*, 'Rhythm of War'. This is one that I REALLY want to sink into spoilers on, so if you're into that then hit us up on the Discord server and we can go into it AT LENGTH, lol. Especially that ending. Holy gee, that ending. And if you get a moment to rate/comment on iTunes, then that would also be appreciated! Every little bit helps!! Talk soon. Intro/outro music for this episode is 'Elevators Need Rock Too' by Spence, courtesy of the YouTube Audio Library. *Sanderson commonly refers to his books as 'puppy-' or 'chihuahua-killers' because he recognises his books are SO DAMN BIG** that you definitely wouldn't want to accidentally drop one on a small dog... **In one of his podcasts, he also mentioned the only reason the Stormlight Archive book 'Oathbringer' was edited down to the final length it was, was because if it had any more pages then the machines at the printers would have been physically incapable of actually producing it, so this is definitely a pattern of behaviour, seriously, please, Brandon, I have other things I need to do.

2. Back to School: Pandemic StyleFirst of all… WTFWe are all living through crazy times right now, let’s backup and talk about how our Spring Shutdown and quarantine went.In all honesty, we’ve been winging it this whole summer. Just keeping our circle small and wondering what in the world school will look like even IF we get to send our kids back. The Decision: How are we doing back to school in 2020?We have a unique circumstance both being/working from home. So if the school gave us a choice, there were a lot of things we had to consider on whether to send them to seated, or try online learning APART from worrying about anyone getting sick.We finally learned our district was going with an either or approach. We talked AT LENGTH with school officials/teachers on what the online curriculum and school day would look like, as well as how the district was planning to keep everyone safe and healthy as much as possible. We talked with all our girls about how they felt - kid’s mental health was definitely part of the equation.Realistically we had to consider work, even though we would be home. Exactly how would we be able to do online schooling for 3 separate kids, with spotty internet at times, and still get anything work wise done during the day.All things considered, we decided to try sending them backRemaining Positive but RealisticWe know another shutdown is probable. We are doing everything we can outside of school to still keep our circle small and build our immune systems. We practice good health hygiene - here are some tips recommended by our pediatrician years ago to reduce bringing sickness home from school:Have the kids leave backpacks, shoes, etc. in a designated space, ideally outside the home. Ours leave theirs in the garage where we’ve set up a “mudroom”. If you have an actual mudroom that will keep things separate from the rest of the house, that works.Change clothes as soon as they get home. All clothes, reusable masks, etc. they wore to school, gets thrown straight in the washing machine.Eat well. The basics of building a good immune system is what you eat. We try to eat mostly whole foods, lots of veggies and fruits. Basically our family follows a paleo way of eating to make it easier.Drink lots of water. They don’t get much at school, so we make sure they drink extra at home.We have prepared our kids for different scenarios, and how they should behave while at school (wearing masks, being respectful of personal distance, etc.)And our current family motto is “stay flexible, and go with the flow” “every little thing, is gonna be all right.” The pandemic is temporary, but we all have to do our part and do the best we can with what we know. Oh man, this is one of the worst films Jacob and Ben have ever had to endure. Why did they wait 20 years to deliver what is ultimately a lazy and inferior product? Steve Scher talks to producer, actor and activist Kathy Najimy about women and body image. Powerful forces are at work shaping our body image. Self-esteem, family norms, peer group pressures and the media all influence our feelings about our own bodies. Actor, activist and producer Kathy Najimy wrapped up the UW’s Weight and Wellness lecture series with a talk on “Women and Body Image,” based on her personal story and her years working in Hollywood. Named one of Ms. Magazine's 'Women of the Year’ in 2004, she is producing a new HBO series based on Ms. Magazine and the work of Gloria Steinem and the feminists of the 70’s. In the 80’s, she co-wrote and co-starred with Mo Gaffney in the Obie award winning feminist comedy hit, “The Kathy and Mo Show.” Two productions were later broadcast on HBO. Kathy Najimy’s breakthrough role was as Sister Mary Patrick in the 1992 Whoopi Goldberg film, “Sister Act.” She has gone on to a highly successful career on stage, screen and television in a wide variety of roles. For 14 seasons she was the voice of Peggy Hill on the award winning animated series “King of The Hill.” She co-starred with her idol Bette Midler in the movie “Hocus Pocus.” She was back on the New York stage in 2014 with her one-woman show, “Lift Up Your Skirt.” She is currently on HBO's "Veep," and has been cast in a new TV series as a police chief. She has spoken around the world on issues affecting girls, women, LGBTQ, as well as animal rights and AIDS prevention. She has won numerous awards and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. She earned some of the money as a formidable TV game show player and as a poker champion. We swim in a sea of chemicals. Some of them are harming our environment, some are harming us. In part two of Steve Scher's conversation with scientist Bruce Blumberg, we hear more about the science of hormone disrupting chemicals, what action the regulatory agencies are taking and whether an approach called green chemistry could keep suspect chemicals from ever entering the environment. Professor Bruce Blumberg spoke at the University of Washington in May 2015, part of the Weight and Wellness series at the UW.Find more interviews on iTunes and Stitcher and at here too.Support for At Length with Steve Scher comes from the University of Washington Alumni Association. and the UW Graduate School.
Steve Scher talks with Professor Bruce Blumberg about obesogens, hormone disrupting chemicals that seem to change human metabolism. We eat too much. We eat too much processed foods high in calories. We don’t exercise enough. It is being called an obesity epidemic, and it is putting more and more people at risk for heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other conditions at ever greater numbers around the world. But something more than our own actions seems to be at work resetting our bodies systems that regulate weight gain and loss.Bruce Blumberg, a developmental biologist and a molecular endocrinologist, coined the term 'obesogens' in 2006 after he discovered that exposing pregnant mice to a chemical compound call Tributyltin made their offspring heavier than those not exposed-- even when they are on a normal diet. His lab is at the University of California, Irvine.Scientists now know that fat tissue acts as an endocrine organ, releasing hormones related to appetite and metabolism. A rising number of manufactured chemicals bind to the same receptors as the hormones and either prevent proper actions by hormones or activate them in the wrong place and the wrong time. These Chemical “obesogens” may alter human metabolism and predispose some people to gain weight. Studies show that obesity is strongly linked to exposures to risk factors, such as hormone distrupting chemicals, during fetal and infant development. Blumberg found that exposure to tributyltin predisposes lab animals to make more and bigger fat cells. The insidious thing, Blumberg says is that animals exposed in utero to TBT are permanently affected Professor Bruce Blumberg spoke at the University of Washington in May 2015, part of the Weight and Wellness series at the UW. Sonia Nazario on a train in Mexico Sonia Nazario, author of “Enrique’s Journey: the story of a boy’s dangerous odyssey to reunite with his mother” talks to Steve Scher about the plight of one of the tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors who illegally cross Mexico by freight train and then the U.S. border in order to reunite with their families in the U.S.She spoke to Seattle area audiences April 2015, about America’s Immigration Dilemma and the policies that might help these families. Tens of thousands of Central American children, unaccompanied by parents or other adults are hopping freights and fleeing the drug cartels, the gangs and the thuggish police in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Almost 50 thousand arrived by the middle of the summer of 2014, when the surge captured media and political attention. These children are often robbed, raped, beaten or kidnapped along the way. Thousands are detained in detention cells for months before their fate- often deportation is determined. There are at least 5 holding facilities in the Puget Sound Area alone. Though this story exploded onto the public mind last year, it has been a humanitarian crisis for years. Journalist Sonia Nazario won a Pulitzer Prize for her LA Times coverage in 2003 for “Enrique’s Journey,” a Honduran boy’s search for his mother who emigrated to the U.S. It became a best selling book in 2006. In 2014, her book gathered attention again, as the rising flood of young children peaked at about 60 thousand by the end of the year. Numbers are lower in 2015, as the U.S. has paid Mexico interdict the migrants before they reach our border. However the violence, criminality and chaos these children are fleeing has continued unabated.Sonia Nazario’s book is assigned in schools and universities around the world. She speaks to organizations and communities about the difficult journey, the hard conditions these young people are fleeing and the need to at least provide them with legal representation at immigration hearings. For more information about KIND and about Sonia Nazario as well as the other guest speakers visiting the UW, search for UW Alumni Association. For more interviews with those guests, search for At Length with Steve ScherYou can also find us on iTunes and Stitcher.
Steve Scher talks to former SETI DirectorJill Tarter about the search for life in the universe. Are we alone in the universe? That question drives SETI, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence.Jill Tarter has been on the hunt for decades. She currently holds the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI Research at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California. She is speaking at the University of Washington March 3rd. Humans have been wondering about other life in the universe for millennia. Scientists can actually seek the answer now. New tools have given astronomers, astrophysicists, exo-biologists the opportunity to scan the heavens for a signal from out there. At Length is supported by the UW Alumni Association
Nancy Pearl tells Steve Scher she has become intrigued by a few new memoirs. Sometimes she finds the writing in memoirs swinging a little too close to wince-worthiness. But of course, the genre is also capable of producing truly memorable stories. Nancy enjoyed a new work by Roger Cohen of the New York Times, "The Girl From Human Street: Ghosts Of Memory In A Jewish Family." It never descends into pathos. Also, Kate Moses, “Cakewalk: A Memoir.” She says it’s a lovely book where each chapter ends with a recipe. Just a few of the other books we discuss.Daniel Mendelsohn “The Lost: A Search For 6 among Six MillionBlaine Harden’s “Escape from Camp 14”Will Schwalbe “The End of Your Life Bookclub.”Haven Kimmel “ A Girl Named Zippy: Growing Up Small in Moreland Indiana”Wes Moore, "The Other Wes Moore” Ann Hood, “The Obituary Writer”Roger Lipsey, “Hammarskjöld: A Life”John Marzluff, “Subirdia “Charles Emmerson, "1913: In Search of the World Before the Great War”Our sponsor this week is another podcast Steve is producing. What do Disneyland, LA Freeways and Film Noir have in common? According to historian Eric Avila, they all represent aspects of America’s racial divide. Eric Avila is a professor of history at UCLA. Contrary to the stories we hear, great discoveries, great creations, are not typically the work of a single person. Genius usually result from collaboration. In his book "Powers of Two: Seeking the Essence of Innovation in Creative Pairs," essayist, author, curator Joshua Wolf Shenk delves into the relationships of some famous duos to illuminate the shared sparks that generated their greatest achievements. Sometimes, one half of the duo got little credit, but their input was nonetheless decisive. As part of his appearance in Seattle in the Fall of 2014, Shenk conducted a workshop in Seattle with Jess Van Nostrand, Founder of The Project Room Seattle, Van Nostrand created the The Project Room with her collaborators to create a virtual and physical space to explore big ideas and spark an inquisitive approach to the arts. This final podcast in this series. "In Residence" illustrates the topic, it was a collaboration between Steve Scher, Elana Jacobs, Stesha Brandon, Weir Harman and the staff at Town Hall. It was better for the shared input. Dolores Huerta still fights for farmworker families. Well into her 8th decade, she is training the next generation of leaders to carry the cause forward. The former teacher and long time community organizer was awarded the Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor awarded in the United States, by another community organizer, President Obama. Huerta and Cesar Chavez were co-founders of the United Farm Workers. Dolores Huerta has pushed and prodded mayors, governors, senators, even presidents for new laws, but her focus remains on the grassroots. She is re- energized each time she can get new street lights for a neighborhood, more people registered to vote, better representation on schools boards.
