A year after the year of tornadoes, 1997 was the year for volcanoes apparently as we got two movies. One being Dante's Peak with Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton and then Volcano with Tommy Lee Jones. Which one is better, which is more scientifically accurate? Take a listen and find out! We talk. I drink. We movie! About Dante's Peak: Volcanologist Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) and Mayor Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton), finally convince the unbelieving populace that the big one is about to hit and that they need to evacuate immediately, only to discover her two children have gone up the mountain to get their grandmother. With Earth's clock racing against them, they must rescue the kids and grandma before the volcano explodes in a fury of flame and ash a million times more powerful than an atomic bomb. About Maneet Chauhan: Maneet Chauhan's passion for all things culinary started at an extremely young age. Seemingly born with a ladle in her hand, she started her culinary "journey" in her homeland of India, where she graduated at the top of her class at the Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration, India's top culinary and hotel management school. After interning at India's finest hotels and kitchens, including names like the Taj Group, Oberoi Hotels and Le Meridien, it was off to the U.S., where she attended The Culinary Institute of America and graduated with high honors, sweeping all awards in her class. In this weeks show our heroes take on an epic challenge - How do you survive a Disaster Movie? Aaron, Sam and James have done extensive research ... kind of. Between them they've watched Geostorm, 2012, Volcano, Dante's Peak, Knowing and Twister. What have they learnt? They've learnt that Disaster movies are pretty bad! But how do you survive a volcano, a tsunami, earthquakes, Hurricanes and Gerard Butler films? Listen this week as our heroes give their top tips and ultimate movie survival advice, for example; Stay away from monuments, don't live near a volcano and listen to the scientists! like seriously. If they say run, you run. If they say wear a mask.... don't be an idiot, wear a mask. Ok, disaster movies get a bad rep for being over the top, chaotic and at times laughable - but they are undeniably entertaining. Who doesn't like seeing shit get blown up as the heroes either try to prevent annihilation or run from it. Enjoy this show - and don't forget to leave a review. thanks
Pierce Brosnan wrestles with mother Earth, his personal demons, and his flirtation with headstrong Linda Hamilton.
Natural disasters are well-known for not being especially cinematic, so Hollywood has had to ignore scientific fact in order to create a spectacle. But what if in the world of disaster movies, from Dante's Peak to 2012 and beyond, kaiju were responsible for each and every eruption, tremor and landslide? Is Rodan secretly huffing pyroclastic flow for recreational purposes? Did Godzilla cause the Poseidon Adventure just by swimming under the boat? Is Ghidorah creating tornadoes full of sharks to get an exciting snack? The answer is, as usual, no. But we're going to speculate on it anyway!

Its another Bond Actor celebration as the Bondzilla Podcast dives into the life and career of Pierce Brosnan as well as the "disaster" sub-genre in one of his earliest blockbuster roles in "Dante's Peak."
At the height of their careers, Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton joined forces for an explosive disaster movie that had all the trappings of a certified hit. Unfortunately the box office did not agree, and this rather decent volcano flick has laid dormant ever since. Untill now! We power up our script rewriting robot and attempt to pull Dante's Peak out of the rubble.
It's James Bond vs The Volcano in this unrelenting 90s disaster flick, which joins our hosts and special guest Jeremy Brown - award-winning author of Zero Limit and Ocean Of Storms - to discuss the logistics of an acid lake, the redemption of an asshole granny, and the film's allegorical impact on modern times.
This week Mattie goes into the origin and definition of the terms first, second, third, and fourth world countries. and after Austin gets done assuming fourth world countries are mole people (they are not) he talks about the real underground menace and teaches us all about the 1980 Mt St Helens eruption and the unexpected similarities he found to events happening now. I also guess there are some spoilers to the movies Face/ Off and Dante's Peak, but those came out in the 90's you should have seen them by now.
Heute haben wir Dante's Peak gesehen und aus Versehen zwei neue Reihen aufgemacht. Danke an Audible!
Dante's Peak is paint-by-numbers disaster cinema. You take the everyman hero—in this case, vulcanologist Harry Dalton, whose played with a steely intensity by Pierce Brosnan—and you place him in a scenario where the odds of survival are long. Those odds aren't helped by those unwilling to believe that there is, in fact, trouble brewing. It's bubbling just beneath the surface at the base of the town's iconic landmark. Dalton—like Chief Brody before him—can yell until he's blue in the face. The higher ups are content to ride out the storm atop of wave of willful ignorance. Their wakeup call: a fiery hail storm of ash and rock. His lone supporter—even his geologic team finds him to be overly anxious—is the town's Mayor, Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton). They battle the clock and the poor judgement of their peers to evacuate the town before it's too late. In that sense, there's a lot that can seem familiar about its run-of-the-mill plot. And the first 50, or so, minutes is probably why the film received less than favorable reviews upon its release. And, honestly, why it isn't all that good of a movie. What does work about Dante's Peak is its effects. A mixture of practical and digital—highly detailed miniatures overlaid with CGI—they hold up quite well for a movie made in 1997. You actually believe your witnessing a town succumb to the wrath of Mother Nature. And once that destruction begins, there's only one thing left to do: enjoy it. So sit back, hammer open a Pompeii IPA from Toppling Goliath Brewing Co. with a stray chunk of volcanic rock, and start up Grandma Ruth's death boat! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, Chumpzilla, and special guest Mayor McCheese are making the questionable decision to gas our truck directly through some hot lava! We'll make it, though, with sheer will if need be! This Week’s Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – We take a trip to the sleepy, rural town of Dante's Peak to examine how a long dormant volcano erupted, leaving disaster in its wake. (00:00) Interesting Facts and the "Hey ... Haven't I Seen This Before?" Movie Game – After a few interesting facts about the film, I challenge them to match movies to their overtly derivative pairs—i.e. Dante's Peak to Volcano or Armageddon to Deep Impact. (1:07:41) Recommendations – Being indoors is better than having a pyroclastic cloud chase you toward an abandoned mine, but if you do find yourself stuck in an abandoned mine, we offer some suggestions to help you pass the time. And next up: either The Adventures of Pluto Nash or a film of your, the listeners, choosing! We got the idea for this episode while doing our last episode on animated Dreamworks movies. Over the years it's pretty common to see movies come out, months apart by different studios. We discuss movies like Armageddon and Deep Impact, Volcano and Dante's Peak, Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down, Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached, etc. This is our version of this or that. We chose our favorites. Listen in and see if you agree or disagree. We only touched on some movies because this was long enough. We may come back for part 2 in the future. Please like, share, comment, subscribe, and or rate. Don't forget to follow us on Instagram and Facebook.
Onward—Pixar's latest animated feature—is yet another fine example of the exemplary work done by the now legendary animation studio. It is a heartfelt tale of two brothers struggling to find themselves and all the while yearning for a relationship with the father taken from them too soon. It is also, unfortunately, a flop. As is the theme of our past few episodes, Onward entered into the ruinous box office landscape of the COVID-19 pandemic. This led it to boast one of Pixar's lowest openings to-date—just $45 million domestically. The sting of that disappointment—a direct consequence of the not-so serendipitous timing—and a truncated run in theaters, bred something exciting: a prompt appearance on Disney+. Kids and families, who could no longer venture to the movies to see it, could now stream it in the comfort of their own home. And it is a movie that deserves an audience. Though not Pixar's best—which would be a high bar to clear for any flick—Onward packs real emotional punch, and, as always, is a lovingly crafted journey that can appeal to both parents and their children. That is a Pixar hallmark. And in this distressing time, it is the kind of art we need. With that in mind, it is time to cast some spells! So sit back, enchant your tastebuds with a Sugar Plum Fairy from Alphabet City Brewing Co., and exercise those magic muscles! I, Bing Bong the Brave (the Thunderous Wizard – @WriterTLK), Capt. Cash the Confident, and Chumpzilla the Cantankerous are on a legendary quest to unearth the all-powerful Phoenix Gem! This Week’s Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – After discussing the movie in-depth, we all came to the same conclusion: Pixar is exceptional at making us cry. (00:00) Lingering Questions and the Glory of the Pixar Tearjerker – We assess what worked/didn't work about the world of Onward, and we share which Pixar moments annihilated us most emotionally. (39:50) The Alternative Movie Title Challenge – In Japan and China, Onward is One Half Magic. Capt. Cash challenges us to identify the movies that alternate titles belong to and what country dubbed them such. (1:04:34) Recommendations – As we all continue to cope with the quarantine, we offer some picks to keep you entertained. Next, it's 90s nostalgia theater with Dante's Peak! (1:22:45) And, as always, hit us up on Twitter or Facebook to check out all the interesting factoids—#ButtMullet and more—from this week’s episode! Just last month, in the early stages of America's encounter with the coronavirus, Chinese-American actor Tzi Ma had a haunting encounter in his neighborhood grocery store: someone shouted "you should be quarantined" from a passing car. It was a shocking example of anti-Asian bigotry that drove him to spearhead a social media campaign called #WashtheHate, in which Ma and other Asian-American actors and celebrities spoke out against prejudice and discrimination towards Asians and Asian-Americans. But of course, Ma is more often (and rightly) recognized for his decades of work as an accomplished character actor, from films like Dante's Peak and Rush Hour in the '90s to his recent boom of work in the 2010s and beyond in Arrival and The Farewell. In writer-director Alan Yang's Netflix drama Tigertail, Ma gets one of his most robust and complicated roles to date: Pin-Jui, a Taiwanese-American man and first-generation immigrant looking back on a life of sacrifice and dreams deferred. On the day Tigertail premieres on Netflix, I sit down with Ma to talk about the film, the responsibility of embodying an analogue for the filmmaker's own father, the complexities of "Facebook acting", and the importance of tolerance and community amid the isolation and division of coronavirus. This week we go to one part of the "verses" in 'Verses and compare the two twin films, Dante's Peak and Volcano. We see how they stack against each other and decide which one we like best, and even though it sounds like it, i did not push The Chris to pick the one he picked lol. We also take a few trips down the rabbit hole that keeps leading us back to Quentin Tarantino, which leads us to talk about if he did his version of Star Trek, The Vipers of Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2, and his acting chops, or lack there of. We also talk about a bonus volcano movie, until we get distracted by Tarantino again, which leads us to believe that we should just do a Quentin Tarantino themed episode in the near future. In this episode the legendary Tzi Ma of the hit series WU Assassins chats with your favorite host Galaxy about his experience is movies and television. Tzi Ma was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the United States at a young age. Together with his parents and four of his siblings, he worked in a family-owned restaurant on Staten Island, New York, where he still has his elementary school friends he's in touch with. One of the most prolific and versatile actors working today, Tzi Ma has worked alongside many of the biggest names in Hollywood. He honed his craft in many of the off-Broadway and regional theaters shows, and worked with acclaimed playwright David Henry Hwang on his first two plays FOB, and The Dance and the Railroad (a play specifically written for Tzi) at the Public theater, and with Eric Overmyer on In Perpetuity Throughout the Universe (also specifically written for Tzi) at the Hudson Guild and Baltimore Center Stage to name a few. His first acting role on the screen was in Ullie Lommel's cult jet-set film Cocaine Cowboys alongside Jack Palance and Andy Warhol in 1978. The claim to fame for that film was that the Nassau county police department at Montauk Point mistook them for real cocaine dealers, confiscated many duffel bags of powdered sugar and production cash and held up production for several days. Most recently, Tzi played the pivotal role of General Shang in Denis Villeneuve's Arrival, a film with Amy Adams which was both critically acclaimed and a box office success. From his role as Hinh, a deadly-efficient assassin and nationalist triple-agent masquerading as Michael Caine's assistant in The Quiet American, to his hilarious, lit-cigarette-swallowing take on The General in Joel and Ethan Coen's The Ladykillers, Tzi always delivers the unexpected. Over the years, he has amassed a distinguished body of work and has come to be a household face. Of course, audiences will always remember Tzi's Counsel/Ambassador Han from Rush Hour and Rush Hour III. His other favorite major film credits include Million Dollar Arm, Dante's Peak, Akeelah and The Bee, Chain Reaction, and Rapid Fire Tzi is also a firm believer in supporting indie films, particularly involving Asian-Canadian or Asian-American writers, directors, and producers. These films include Golden Gate written by David Henry Hwang, which centers around the unjust treatment of the Chinese American community during the McCarthy era; Catfish in Black Bean Sauce by writer/director Chi Muoi Lo, which tackles the lighter side of race relations, family dynamics, and love between an Asian American man and an African American woman; Red Doors by writer/director Georgia Lee - a re-imagining of Shakespeare's The Tempest in an Asian American setting; Formosa Betrayed Produced by Will Tiao, who examines the desire for Taiwanese independence springing from the "white terror" incident; #1 Serial Killer by writer/director Stanley Yung, a rare Asian American horror film; Pali Road by writer/director/producer Jonathan Lim, a psychological mystery thriller love story; Mike, Mike Tan by writer/director Aimee Long, which deals with a Chinese American cop who accidentally kills an Africa American man in the line of duty; and Meditation Park by writer/director/producer Mina Shum, who takes on the challenge of telling the experiences of a first-generation immigrant woman's journey of self-discovery and growth toward independence. His portrayal as Bing, the husband in Mina's Meditation Park garnered Tzi a Best Actor in A Leading Role Nomination from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. Through their talented and diverse voices, we share with the world our stories. Notable recurring roles on television includes, the Dragon in ABC's Once Upon a Time; General Onoda in Amazon's The Man in the High Castle; Tao in AMC's Hell on Wheels; President Lu Chi Jang in HBO's Veep; Yao in HBO's Silicon Valley; Ambassador Lu in ABC's Commander in Chief; Cheng Zhi in FOX's 24 and 24:Live Another Day; Dr. Henry Lu in CBS's City of Angels; Det. Harold Ng in ABC's NYPD Blues; Lee Hei in CBS's Martial Law; and as Bah Bah in FOX's animated series American Dad. For today’s conversation, we’re changing things up and taking a look at things on the other side of the camera. We’re chatting with someone who’s made their career writing and directing major hollywood movies for the past twenty years. He’s come a long way from his father’s liquor store in Massachusetts, and he tells us exactly how, after graduating from school and writing a letter to his hollywood idol, he found himself sharing a beer and chatting about his favorite movies with director Sam Raimi! Now, after having directed stars like William H. Macy and Jason Statham, he shares what it’s like sitting in the director’s chair, and how he’s managed to pull off getting films made when seemingly impossible circumstances stand in the way. Tony Giglio is and American film director born in Medford, Massachusetts. He studied and obtained a B.A. at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He worked his way up from a Production Assistant to become one of Hollywood's most versatile Writer-Directors. He gained experience in the entertainment industry on projects like HEAT, IN ENEMY HANDS, TERMINATOR 2, LIAR LIAR, CELTIC PRIDE, BULLETPROOF, DANTE'S PEAK, and FEAR. Most recently, he has directed DOOM: Annihilation, set to be released in 2019. Previous films include CHAOS, EXTRACTION, TIMBER FALLS and DEATH RACE.

Without volcanoes there would be no life on Earth. But just how afraid of supervolcanoes - like the one in Yellowstone National Park - should we be? Inspired by 90s disaster movie Dante’s Peak, the boys explore just how bad it could get for humanity and, of course, for Pierce Brosnan. Featuring: Dr Michael Poland

Matthew Sweet with music for films inspired by the Disaster Movie genre in the week of the release of "Geostorm" featuring music by Lorne Balfe. An often ensemble cast, pitted against difficult odds, caught in the drama of overcoming cataclysmic events, the Disaster Movie has its antecedents in the pioneering days of cinema but it reached its peak in the 1970s. But as one of the latest examples of the genre, "Geostorm" has discovered, having finally been released after several years of post production and aborted publicity campaigns, the events of Disaster Movies have a unhappy knack of being pre-empted by real life. The programme features music from "Meteor", "San Francisco", "The High and the Mighty", "Airport", "The Poseidon Adventure", "The Towering Inferno", "Airplane", "When Worlds Collide", "Krakatoa - East of Java", "Dante's Peak" and "Geostorm".

Instead of looking at a single movie each week, every now and then at Nic, Tys and Videotape we want to just throw caution to the wind and have a good ol' themed discussion, and so next week we'll be chatting all things TWIN MOVIES! Now, this doesn't refer to movies about twins (Sorry Lindsay Lohan) but rather that strange film phenomenon in which two movies with almost the same plot are released within a year of each other... and we all pretend like it's no big deal! It's Deep Impact and Armageddon. It's Volcano and Dante's Peak. Its White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen. The list goes on!! And we're gonna try and tackle them all in what will surely be a loose and not at all comprehensive discussion on TWIN MOVIES! Don't miss it.
This week, Jennifer found a wine she likes (a first!) so she's taking a break from researching the next episode to watch Dante's Peak, where everything is made up and the facts don't matter. Except for Pierce Brosnan being a gorgeous magical creature. That always matters.

Our second of back to back "stupid volcano movies from 1997" is the possibly the least disastery of any disaster movies ever created. Spoiler alert - body count is 5 and a tiny hick town gets cleared off the map. It's fine since they were just a bunch of smug buttholes anyways. So if Volcano should have been named "Lava; Not Volcano Really", then Dante's Peak should have been called "Volcano; No Lava Really". It's a perfect mirror in opposite land. The volcano is HUGE but has very little lava. In fact the only thing that lava kills in this film is some truck tires. Very strange. In the film Volcano, the disaster is at least disastrous, somewhat. In Dante's Peak its very not that way. A town of about 3000 people gets wiped out but only 4 people die due to the volcano; 3 of them didn't even live there and one was an insane old bitch that NO ONE liked. It's pretty not disastrous; quite unlike the structure of this sentence. Some notable features - the stupidest robot in a movie, an old hag who wants to bang a mountain, bad character naming (Harry and Terry), a mayor/coffee barista/horrible mom/town bicycle/news anchor, a chopper pilot who doesn't understand how choppers work, a pyroclastic cloud, some awful Mayor Wando vision, human soup, a splitting headache, and multiple climaxes. It's really stupid, horribly cliche, looks terrible, poorly written, and fairly uneventful. But somehow it makes for a ton of fun, IF and ONLY IF you have a great group of riffers sitting next to you. The film is just to boring to do by yourself, but because so little happens when something should be happening it's possibly the easiest movie to mock while viewing we've seen in quite some time (possibly since Q: The Winged Serpent). Its so riffable that we are going to add a new ratings category just for Riffability - 5/5.
Hey remember that OTHER volcano movie from 1997? Well its here on Stinker Madness to finally help us answer that age old question: which 1997 volcano movie is the most stupid? Dante's Peak stars Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton. Roman's Do's and Don'ts Ninja Busters - Dangerous Men - $3.99 on The Barbarians - The Wild Card - The Great Superpower Debate Extreme resistance to extreme heat but only from above - 3/10 stars
We deal with the enduring, sometimes mystifying appeal of Disaster Movies in this episode, covering films from the 50's right through to modern day with a variety of dooms for us, fire, flood, earthquakes, volcanoes, asteroids, ... and bees. Millions of bees. Please join us for our whistlestop tour of A Night To Remember, The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, The Towering Inferno, Meteor, The Swarm, Twister, Independence Day, Daylight, Dante's Peak, Volcano, Armageddon, Deep Impact, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, and San Andreas.
Dante's Peak is a 1997 disaster film starring Meath man, Pierce Brosnan. The movie is set in the fictional town of Dante's Peak wherein the town must survive the volcanic eruption of it's namesake. ...Basically Jaws but with a Volcano. The opening track this week is: Old Saint Helen by Billy Jonas.
In Episode 33 we'll be discussing disaster films, and attempt to figure out what makes a movie a 'disaster movie'. In order to kick off the discussion this week, we watched the 1997 Disaster film, Dante's Peak. Directed by Roger Donaldson Starring: Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton, Jamie Renée
A few times in recent Hollywood history, we've seen nearly identical movies come down the pipe in the same year. And over Thanksgiving weekend, Noah and Chance doubled their duty and watched six movies, three pairs of action movie twins. There's the gargantuan "Armageddon" and the trying-to-be-smarter "Deep Impact" that sent celestial killers toward earth in 1998. There's the 1997 volcano flicks, "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak" about civil servants fighting to save cities in denial from lava flows. And there's "Flightplan" and "Red Eye," which put unsuspecting women in danger during night-time plane rides in 2005. Welcome to the Megapod, folks. 3:30 - Armageddon 16:30 - Deep Impact 29:00 - Volcano 40:30 - Dante's Peak 53:30 - Flightplan 1:08:30 - Red Eye
This week we bring you an onslaught of automotive industry asshattery, with too many damned people in the room. We're joined by Mike Spinelli, Travis Okulski, Brendan McAleer and Austin Cabot. Mike gives us his take on on the Porsche GT3 RS as well as an overview of the soundtrack to Dante's Peak, Stevee Nicks encounters and a young boy's take on Burt Monroe. Travis gives us some insight into the Ferrari F12 TDF as well as his take on unnecessarily ostentatious german press tours. Whilst Brendan and Austin take a far more measured approach jabbing with the occassional one-liner or groan inducing pun as we power our way through two power outages mid show.
During the 1990's, two competing volcano themed movies appeared in theaters very close to one another: Dante's Peak and Volcano. Pierce Brosnan took a break from being James Bond and took a trip to Dante's Peak.
It's the twenty-fourth episode of the Kulturecast and this week we are joined again by staff writer John Lein to talk about the first two movies in our Disaster Movie Marathon. In this episode, I have the pleasure of chatting with special effects guru Tom Seymour, whose credits include: "Titanic," "Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End," "Criminal Minds," "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "Lethal Weapon 4," and "Jericho." If you're looking to make a car explode or make a river flood or create an accurate replica of the the Titanic for a movie, Tom's the man to call. We talk about everything from working on a Young MC music video to building a river set for "Dante's Peak" to why math and science are important subjects to study if you want to blow things up for a living. TOM SEYMOUR'S BIO I was born on Friday the 13th. My Dad was a fireman. Halloween is my favorite holiday. I get paid to commit felonies and acts of vandalism. My Mad Scientist motto: "Blowing up the world. A little at a time."
This week on Alcohollywood, we're watching the 1997 disaster flick Dante's Peak, starring Pierce Brosnan and The Terminator's Linda Hamilton as a rockstar volcanologist and a small-town mayor, respectively, who attempt to escape a rampaging volcano terrorizing the small town of Dante's Peak. Basically Jaws with a volcano, the film is a cheesy rollercoaster ride, but not nearly as obnoxious as its volcano-film partner, Volcano. The effects hold up well, the stakes are clear, and the filmmakers actually go for the gut with some of the deaths. With that in mind, it's certainly an interesting artifact to explore: a perfect encapsulation of a time when coffee was ubiquitous, everyone dressed like Blossom, and science robots were still a fascinating gimmick. Check out our rules and custom cocktail, as well as our review below!
Towerbot's a little miffed that when we had an actual guest who wasn't a basement-dwelling hobo, we decided that it would be a better use of his time to clean the reactor cooling pool. So, he kept recording our interview with Monica Wolfson after we thought we were "off the record." Will we be horribly embarrassed?
