He also shares his thoughts about Financial freedom, achieving success thru becoming the version of yourself you envisioned years before, finding yourself by suffering, and sacrificing for a purpose you believed in because you had the courage to believe in yourself. These kinds of freedoms are truly enlightening. Mikula talks about the feast and famine and how military veterans are not accustomed to this and maybe discouraged by it but by using their strengths they can overcome the famines by planning, saving, and taking financial classes to better understand how to run a sole proprietorship. Jeremy also shares his experience as an independent insurance adjuster and discusses how to be successful in this industry. He also shares his thoughts on the success rate of military veterans as compared to civilians. Christy's Questions:If there's an event like a hurricane, and 50 IA firms are calling / emailing… what do I do? Are the IA firms that I turn down going to be mad and take me off their roster? As a new IA should I go ahead and take an hourly position during an event?New IAs agreeing to lower pay seems like a huge point of contention with the seasoned IAs. Doesn't it wind up drag down everyone's pay?If I am working daily claims, and a storm hits, how do I shut off new claims and tell the IA firm I've been running dailies for “sorry gotta go!” Will they ever give me dailies again? How do I know which IA firm to focus on? They all talk a good game… how does a new IA avoid the pitfalls and traps of dealing with shady IA firms?  Considering all of a CAT Field IA's daily expenses while on site, does a remote adjuster end up making (and keeping) just as much income as a Field IA?Would it be a smart move as a new IA, to forget about Field at the very beginning and focus on Desk? It seems to me a new IA could learn a hell of a lot of X1 experience by looking over other Field X1 work and learn what both a good file looks like and a bad file looks like, then take that info out in the Field in 6-8 months. Was it a waste of time for me to get certification after certification after certification? Do IA firms really even look at any of that?As a brand spanking new IA, with so many other things to learn, would it make sense for me to put in the time, take the NFIP classes, and get my NFIP Mentorship going now?Thank you for being an AdjusterTV Radio listener! Last week was all about Chris Stanly. Now, it's Jeremy Rettig's turn.    Chris takes the reins for today's episode to interview Jeremy. Today, Jeremy is a professional with more than a decade of experience as an Independent Adjuster. As the Founder of Adjuster University, he has proven himself as an expert in his field, but it wasn't always smooth sailing. From bouncing between various elementary schools to flipping Nathan's hot dogs and selling drugs to a successful business and committed father, Jeremy's journey has had a lot of twists and turns. Listen in as Jeremy surprises Chris with new stories about the wrestling website he used to run and shares a couple close call experiences from his dealing days.    Growing up bullied and dropping out of school can leave lasting baggage to work through, but Jeremy is a perfect example of how a 6 figure mindset can turn everything around. This episode dives into the catalyst to Jeremy's new reality, the hurricane of road blocks in his way, and a whole lot of gems you can take with you moving forward.   Key Topics: Getting into insurance adjusting Is adjusting too good to be true? Are you settling? There is no security in any role You are the average of the 5 people you hang around most Links: www.instagram.com/jeremy.rettig https://www.adjuster-university.com/

It was a good and accurate estimate, but I had to tweak the XM8 criteria in order to get something closer to real world costs. But that got me thinking about how objective the pricing data is in XM8 and how much the carrier would be charged for estimates that would not require supplements. To re-phrase: accurate estimates increase an IA's fee tiers.  Those estimates would be a bit subjective and therefore cost more compared to the base level objective XM8 pricing data that we all know can be a bit low. When a contractor tells the carrier the actual costs, that estimate is not subject to fee tier increase.  So is it wrong to assume that by extension, the most advantageous thing (for the carrier), would be for me to write an estimate for one dollar above deductible, then the contractor could describe the actual costs that XM8 (and file reviewer) would not allow? Afterall, the carrier really doesn't have to pay the IA for a contractor submitted supplement."Justin W. has several questions, including:  Planning and executing for a deployment:Can you walk us through the deployment planning process, how you organize this? What has worked for you and what do you feel will continue to work in the future? Can you walk us through the deployment execution process, how do you execute?  What has worked for you and what do you feel will continue to work in the future?Do you ramp up the number of claims to perform per day as the deployment moves along on all deployments? (Example: I watched a video covering a 4-day work cycle. Starting a deployment with 2 claims per day than ever week after adding 1 more claim per day until reaching the max threshold for claims per day.)What does a typical day look like in the peak timeframe of a CAT deployment? (When the machine is firing on all cylinders) Would it help to look at this on an hourly breakdown basis? What is the breakdown of a 12 to 16-hour workday? How many claims within the day? Does the workday consist of an even balance of drive time, appointments, scoping, report writing, etc? Or is there more time devoted in a day to one particular area? Any examples would be very helpful.Would you say this is the most difficult part of the job? What do you think are the most difficult parts of the job as a whole? How do you balance work, personal errands, and family time?Jason M. - Can you talk about how to prepare and equip when called on a CAT that's a few hundred miles away by flight?Anonymous - I had a insured contact me through text message and asked me to “yank the shingles off the roof, before my adjuster gets here." He thought I was his contractor. And when I got out there it was pretty apparent that some of the damage was new. How do you handle that situation with the member? Do you just act like you never received the message?Story from Matt - How to deal with dogs - Beagle escaping and the dog pack that tried to get him in Omaha.

Your independent adjuster pay is determined greatly by two factors, the price that you charge and the loyalty that you earn. If you've ever felt like you are getting paid too little as an independent auto damage appraiser or adjuster, this episode is FOR YOU! When you are first starting out it can make perfect sense to charge less, take lower-paying deployments or claims, just so you can get an opportunity to prove yourself. The hard part becomes raising your price to where you are no longer a bargain and pursuing higher paying opportunities and firms. For daily auto claims many IA's get start handling claims with great companies that give them wonderful opportunities, but they soon find out if they can't raise their prices, they'll not be able to sustain the volume required to earn their income year-round. This is the point where being able to raise your prices is critical, but how do you do that? When is the right timing to increase your rates? Today's episode is the audio version of the introduction to the Independent Adjuster's Playbook. Just got this back from the editor and we'll probably redo the take for the final audiobook but I was so excited I had to share it with you the listener. You can pre-order your free copy of the Independent Adjuster's Playbook at IAPlaybook.com Enjoy! Introduction You (yes, you!) can become an independent auto adjuster if you are able to apply the principles and strategies included inside of this book.  My life completely changed after I became an independent auto adjuster, and I am certain it will change your life as well.  For over a decade, being an adjuster has empowered a life that my wife and I had previously only dreamed about. We thought that we needed stacks of cash and would have to wait until retirement to achieve the things we wanted, but we were wrong. Travel, adventure, purpose, and a secure career have all become the norm for our young family, and we have not had to sacrifice who we are in the process. Looking back, I remember how I was NO ONE and how I had NO SKILLS that you would think an auto adjuster would need. I had never worked on a car, never changed my own oil, and my stellar warehouse career (of throwing boxes for a living) was completely unrelated to being an adjuster. Truly, if I have found and achieved a successful career in this fascinating industry, anyone can. I've handled claims locally in my state, traveled across the country chasing hail storms, shown up in the aftermath of catastrophes (like hurricane Sandy) and have been able to connect to people whose lives have been shaken by nature's awesome and terrible power. I have seen the tremendous damage a storm can cause and have heard the stories from people…… REAL PEOPLE, about how their lives were shattered, and I even got to enjoy playing a small part in their life's restoration. In short, it is an exciting career that pays well while still giving you freedom. However, this is only true if you are able to unlock the many doors that stand between you and the life you have always wanted. A typical scenario for many new adjusters attempting to enter into the industry is finding themselves overwhelmed, confused, misled, and walking for months or years in circles still trying to find a solid way into the industry.  Sadly, because of this difficulty and confusion, many new adjusters give up. I am here to tell you that the code is cracked inside of this book. This book is about my own experiences and the experiences of dozens of others that I have either interviewed on my podcast (The Independent Adjusters Podcast) or have worked closely with inside the adjusting world. Having heard their stories of how they successfully navigated the industry, I found the correlations between all of our success stories and have created a roadmap for you to follow that will exponentially increase your chances of success in this industry while removing the guesswork from your new career. There are three main parts to this book. The first section is called “The Decision”. Inside this first section, we will cover what exactly an adjuster is and will correctly set your expectations about the career, allowing you to make an educated decision on whether to pursue insurance adjusting as a career. Part two of the book is “The Strategy”. Here, I will show why the typical way (that is spouted on the Internet) of thinking about becoming an adjuster is highly flawed. I will also discuss the overall strategy that you will need to employ for your new career and why it is important to your success. The final part of the book is “The Roadmap”. The Roadmap is a list of the steps that you will need to take along with the instructions to accomplish each step. Rather than leaving you to try and figure this process out on your own, I knew I needed to create this step by step guide for you to follow. The Roadmap is the playbook that other successful adjusters, including myself, have followed to find success and a fulfilling career in insurance adjusting. This book is not just an interesting or fun explanation of a job, it is a call to action. Either to embrace your dreams of becoming an adjuster or to abandon them.  See, as independent adjusters and appraisers, we can't hide behind corporate logos, processes, and profits. We are spending our own money and putting our reputation on the line. We have to figure out how to get work, assignments, and of course, more income. All of this needs to be accomplished without wasting time or money. These are the questions and issues at hand, and this book will guide you to the answers. My name is Chris Stanley, and this is the Independent Adjuster's Playbook. Join myself and other independents on our path to non-corporate success in the insurance industry…… WE ARE IA's!

IA 87: 10 Signs You Should Invest in Becoming an Independent Adjuster

The Independent Adjuster Podcast (IA Path)

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 10, 2018 12:42

Hey It's Chris Stanley and welcome to the independent adjusting podcast. Today's episode is all about knowing whether you personally as an individual should invest in becoming an independent adjuster. maybe you aren't sure if you should invest in becoming an independent adjuster. There can be a lot of time and money invested into being an independent adjuster. So I'm going to give you ten things that I thought of that could be signs you are ready to invest in becoming an independent adjuster. If you are meeting most of the following criteria, then you may be poised to make a run at having a career in independent adjusting. This episode of the Independent Adjuster Podcast is sponsored by ACD a top independent auto appraisal company. Email them at Network@ACDCorp.com They want to work with you if you have what it takes, but do you? That is the point of this very episode. 1.      You Want to Own Your Own Business Many people don't realize it, but as an independent adjuster you are creating your own business. If you don't have the ambition or want the responsibility of owning a business it could be a big hurdle to overcame in your journey. You are a 1099 contractor for most companies and that means you are responsible for taxes, accounting, invoicing, revenue, profit, and other not fun words that we must use as business owners.   2.      You Have Initiative Taking initiative and being a self-starter is one of the biggest requirements of being an independent adjuster. You don't have bosses checking your cubicle every few minutes to make sure you are doing what needs to be done. There isn't a daily pow wow with the team to check the progress of the project. Look through your past have you started doing things that needed to be done even if there was no direct monetary gain from the project? If you have the get it done bug you'll be far more likely to be successful as an independent adjuster.   3.      You are Passionate Enjoying your job is always a good thing, but do you have passion for becoming an adjuster, or do you have passion for any career task that you determine to take on? Being passive and lackluster in attitude and energy can be a recipe for failure. Starting as an independent adjuster is much like being an entrepreneur, you can't expect to have overnight success. This can make it financially, mentally, and emotionally difficult to push through the tough times if you aren't passionate about the career you are pursuing.   4.      Your Spouse is Annoyed at How Much You Talk About… My poor wife has had to endure many career shifts, crazy ideas, and my obsession of whatever I was tackling. There is really no other word that accurately describes what it takes to enter a new and highly competitive industry. If your spouse is jealous of how much time you are spending on researching, training, & pursuing your career in independent adjusting, you may be on the path to success…… and marriage counseling. Make sure you buy some roses for the wife or bring a 6 pack home for your husband the next time you have to take a Crash Course class with me, because I won't be going to counseling…. again. YOU CAN'T MAKE ME!   5.      You Work Hard We all think that we are hard workers, but it just isn't the case. Most of the work force when looked at objectively is giving a slack performance when compared to the superstars of their respective fields. The people who excel at __________ (fill in the blank job) typically are excelling not because they have a special talent, but because they work harder. When I worked at Wal-Mart Distribution I was the short, overweight, no muscles 5ft 8 young man, when compared to other workers who appeared to be lifetime members to Golds Gym, I should have been the bottom producer. Yet, I was able to set records in my department because I worked HARDER and SMARTER. When you determine your own success, you must give it your all and put in the hard work to become the successful independent adjuster you want to become.   6.       Won't Take “No” for an Answer If you give up easy, then give up now! Becoming an independent adjuster is a challenge and you will hear no or even worse hear nothing many times before you hear, “YES!” or “You are DEPLOYED!”. With red tape in the insurance industry, long term runaways to getting on rosters, and a lot of training and networking you'll need to do, it will be a test of your resilience and patience. Get ready for big rewards when you get the “YES!”, but be even more ready to hear no and not accept it. If you keep hearing no when applying for companies download my 101 Adjusting Rosters by clicking HERE so you can hear no for a long time before your run out of companies to contact.   7.      You Love Helping Others Being an independent adjuster is about helping individuals and families get back on their feet after a traumatic event. Whether they've damaged their car or lost their house in a flood, these people need help. If you haven't learned to enjoy helping others, then you may NOT enjoy being an independent adjuster. You'll constantly be looking to shortcut the most important part of your job, connecting with the people involved. Yes, many people become an IA (independent adjuster) because they want to make money, but if that is all that is driving you then drive yourself onto another career, because you will likely not find success with that motivation. Don't believe me? This principle applies to not just adjusting, but to insurance in general. Checkout the articles on INSNerds.com section of “Why I love Insurance” and I'd challenge you to see a single person mentioning money as why they love working in insurance.   8.      You Have People Skills I can imagine an adjuster who sits in a cubicle all day, talks on the phone like those DRY EYES commercials and stamps “Deny” on papers that are placed in front of them, but my imagination and the reality of what it will be like for you as an independent adjuster are incompatible. Your entire job is based on a single word, “communication.” Which is laughable because I say jokingly I am the worst 1 on 1 communicator on the planet, which is my exaggerated way of saying I still need to work on my skillset. As an adjuster you must adjust the owner's expectations by communicating the claims process, you must communicate the damages you observed through an estimate, and you must communicate your thoughts on the entire loss through your summary/appraisal report. If you don't get along with people, then they probably won't get along with you as an independent adjuster.   9.      You Have Margin In a quote from the book Margin: Restoring Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Time Reserves to Overloaded Lives, Richard Swenson, M.D. describes margin like this: “Margin is the space between our load and our limits. It is the amount allowed beyond that which is needed. It is something held in reserve for contingencies or unanticipated situations. Margin is the gap between rest and exhaustion, the space between breathing freely and suffocating.” If you don't have margin in your life then a big part of your journey to becoming an IA needs to be learning how to create margin. There is an excellent article by Michael Hyatt on this matter and obviously the book quoted above would be great for you to read as well. Margin is important as an independent adjuster, because we are dealing with catastrophes on large and small scales and need emotional and mental margin to handle the stress. We are also business owners and a business with no financial margin is a business ready to collapse at the first moment things go wrong. (and they will!) You will be investing a large chunk of time into training and if you don't have space in your life it may come crumbling down around you.   10.  You Have Computer Skills This is probably the most intimidating for people, but don't close the screen and go back to working at your old job just yet. This is the least important of the 10 things listed, but if you already have strong computer skills and are comfortable at a computer you are at a huge advantage. If you are not computer savvy you can acquire these skills, but you must also have many of the qualities listed above to push through the hard work with passion and not find yourself unable to perform a job due to lack of computer knowledge.   Now I hope that this list helps you better understand what it takes to become a successful independent adjuster and be better prepared for your journey. If you need help getting started and don't know what your next step in the journey should be, feel free to schedule a 15-minute Q&A Call with me and I'd be happy to give you custom advice on how to get started. IA 79: 17,732 Adjusters did this one thing

The Independent Adjuster Podcast (IA Path)

17,732 adjusters did this one thing... This is part 2 of a of a special series of 5 podcasts called, “The Top 5 Ways to Get More Catastrophe Work as an Independent Adjuster” and is sponsored by ACD, It is a BIG number. They all did this one thing... did you? And if you did where does that leave you? According to the Texas Department of Insurance in 2017 17,732 adjusters received their Texas All Lines license..... (feel free to read that again if you'd like) Now it is a shocking statistic and I hope you are feeling the weight of those numbers. Did you receive your license in 2017? Maybe you got it in 2016 and you are in front of those 17k other adjusters in terms of seniority, but 2016 was only a little better for you, 13,575 got their license in that year. It's safe to say over 10k adjusters receive a Texas all lines license a year (over 7500 in the first 4 months of 2018!) Now all of those aren't independent adjusters, but the reality is, everybody and their mother and their school teacher has an adjuster license. It is a tough and painful 40 hours of studying and then a brutal and boring test and you should be proud for getting your adjuster license, but in the catastrophe adjusting world it's par for the course and just the beginning of getting work. OK now that we know.... you are one of MANY licensed adjusters (in Texas, Florida or Indiana don't get caught up on specifics) we need to have the conversation about how do we stand out from those other 17,000 adjusters who got licensed in Texas last year. In yesterdays email I promised I would address the question, "How do we prove that we are better money makers?" Remember IA Firms are bringing us in to make money off of us and thus we need to cost less and make them more money so they'll deploy us more so we can make more $$. (It's all about the money it seems) Insurance companies are the ones dictating how many people may be used for a given catastrophe event and what state they will be working out of. To legally allow you to work for those companies in most states you must have an adjuster license in the state to even be considered for most of the available positions. Texas is great for hail storms and Houston can have flooding events, but there are many other types of storms around the country that once again we can use to increase our chances of deployment. If you are sitting on JUST A TEXAS/FLORIDA LICENSE you may be sitting at home because there is no reason to consider you for any storm outside of those states. Yes companies can apply for you to get an emergency license in other states, but that is only if a state of emergency has been declared and that costa the IA Firms time to apply for you and the fee for application, which costs them MORE money. Remember our goal is to cost LESS. Also, the more IA's they have available in specific states where the catastrophes occur the more spots they may be able to fill.... making them more money. You are probably tracking with me and where I'm about to go, but for clarity's sake I hope you are seeing this picture and business as a numbers game, because frankly it is. It's all about the numbers and if you want the numbers on your side you need to do the things that'll give you an advantage. So my #2 Tip for getting more catastrophe work is.... #2 Get More Licenses I'm sure you are sick of hearing this, but it is a good piece of advice. Now which licenses should you get? Where should you start? Are there states that are more valuable than others? OF COURSE! We'll talk about which states to get tomorrow and I'll have a third tip for you. First though I want to challenge you to get 2 new adjuster licenses each month until you get work. Just 1 a month if that is all you can do, it'll help! Michigan is only $12 I think.... OK save that for a rough month! Most licenses aren't that expensive once you have your first license and it'll serve you for years to come. Once you get your first deployment I'd encourage you to invest money back into getting as many licenses as possible. With $2000 in licenses invested you can be in the 90+% group of adjusters and be with the cream of the crop. Your Guide, Chris Stanley P.S. This isn't all there is to getting work, but hey its just the first two tips! Just a quick reminder #1 - Get on more rosters #2 - Get more licenses If you haven't gotten your initial adjuster license or need any adjuster licencing courses you can save 20% at AdjusterPro by being a part of our membership community, the League of IA's. This is part 1 of a of a special series of 5 podcasts called, “The Top 5 Ways to Get More Catastrophe Work as an Independent Adjuster” and is sponsored by ACD, If you aren't aware of it yet, your career choice of being an independent adjuster can be a tough and lonely road at times. Waiting for calls, waiting for orientations, waiting for deployments.... then when mother nature isn't dishing out its normal dose of chaos it becomes even tougher to financially survive by having only limited possibilities of work. Over the next 5 days I'm going to give you my "Top 5 Ways to Get More Catastrophe Work." The problem we are faced with is REAL, but the question is simple, "How do you find more work as an independent adjuster?" To determine how we find more work, we need to determine why someone would want to give us work. Then we can come up with a few ways that will give us the edge and give the companies and recruiters reason to pause and choose us.   The Reasons Why The reason why IA Firms are wanting to deploy you is to make money. They have requests from an insurance company for assistance with a project. It could be a request for 10 or 100 people, but either way the IA Firm makes money when you make money. Insurance companies pay the IA Firm for the services you perform and on average/typically the IA Firm keeps 40% of the money and gives you 60%. With that 40% the IA Firm still has to pay for expenses (just like you). It costs the IA Firm money to find you, support you, train you etc. We get the point, they are spending money to make money. So can we then assume that if you cost less money to deploy/support and earn them more money then you'll have an advantage on being chosen for a deployment? I say "YES!" So how do we show that advantage on paper, that is in a stack of other papers or on a digital computer screen? How do we prove that we are a better money making machine for the IA Firm than the the next guy? It feels like this is a never ending pursuit of questions.... right? It does feel this way, but it is these questions that will take you from being another number on a roster to being a superhero A-list adjuster who is called over and over again. Tomorrow I'm going to tackle the "How do we prove that we are better money makers" question, but right now I want to give you something applicable and 1 of the top 5 ways to getting more catastrophe work.   I mentioned earlier in the email that it gets tough when there are limited possibilities of work. Any IA with a license can get deployed when a major storm like Harvey, Katrina, or Sandi hits, it's the rest of the time that I'm talking about. When it isn't an adjuster gold rush how do we position ourselves for success? As an IA you are a business, and as a business you are playing a numbers game. If Catastrophe Company A has 50 spots for adjusters in the upcoming month, how do you become one of those 50? In essence that is what people are saying when they email asking, "Pilot has me on their roster, but how do I get deployed NOW!?" Truth is I don't know if you can become one of the top 50 for Pilot... right now any ways. What we need to do it work with better #'s so we can make more $$$. Instead of being consumed with being the top person at Pilot (which is a great goal) let's look at increasing the odds of success. If every major CAT company has 50 spots to fill in a month and there are 5 major companies, lets get on all their rosters. That'll give us 250 spots that we could be a candidate for instead of 50. A 5x greater chance of being deployed. Now we are talking! What if you didn't stop at the top 5? What is you got on the top 20 Cat companies?  They probably don't all have 50 spots, but what if the next 15 had 20 spots?  That is now 550 spots available! So to speak clearly my first tip for getting more catastrophe work is to... #1 - Get on More Catastrophe Rosters This may seem trivial and simple, but this single tip and you taking action on it could be the difference between you working this year and sitting at home watching the weather channel wishing you were deployed. Most IA's I talk to have never even gotten on and qualified to be on all top 5 rosters. If you are serious about becoming a successful IA then I challenge you to do something...... Submit a roster/application a day.... just 1 a day until you get deployed. You can even take weekends off! Submit 5 applications a week until you are working. Email me back if you take me up on this challenge and let me know if you need a list of companies to apply to. Your Guide, Chris Stanley P.S. I'll see you tomorrow and we'll talk about my #2 tip and that question of "How do we prove that we are better money makers?"

Hurricane Predictions vs Reality

Hurricane Predictions vs. Reality – Through the Lens of an Independent Adjuster   Because we're living in a technological age, it's easy to assume that we understand almost everything about the world around us. However, while we have the sum of human knowledge at our fingertips, there's one area where we still have a lot to learn - the weather.   Unfortunately, weather patterns matter a lot more than just deciding on whether you need a coat or shorts when you go outside. Storm systems like hurricanes and tornadoes can do severe damage, so it's necessary to understand how to predict them. This also greatly affects our jobs as independent adjusters.   Many times the industry gets excited about a great prediction of what to expect from the coming hail storm or hurricane season, but how are the predictions doing verses the reality?   Today I want to look at hurricane predictions for the last five years and compare them to the actual results. We have mountains of data about hurricanes, but are we putting it to the best use and can you actually plan anything around these predictions? Let's find out.   How are Hurricanes Predicted? For the most part, scientists are only able to make predictions based on past trends. While current weather data (temperature, wind speeds, etc.) can help inform their decision, the best way to predict new storms is to see what happened in years past.   The other factor is what's considered a “normal” hurricane season. Before, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) used data from 1950-2000 to determine that an average season would see 11 named storms, six hurricanes, and two significant hurricanes. However, the new model is based on data from 1981-2010, which paints a different picture.   Now, an average hurricane season is listed as 12 named storms, six hurricanes, and three major hurricanes. Not a huge difference statistically, but one extra major storm can mean millions more in damages, so it's a pretty drastic change overall.   Is This Data Accurate? Let's Compare the last fast years   2012 Predictions 50% chance of a normal season 25% chance of an above-normal season 25% chance of a below-normal season   9-15 named storms 4-8 hurricanes 1-3 major hurricanes   2012 Actual Apparently, the 25% chance of an above-normal season was enough, as this year saw an abundance of storms and hurricanes. In this case, NOAA came up short.   19 named tropical storms 10 hurricanes 2 major hurricanes (including Sandy)   2013 Predictions 2012 made NOAA reconsider their forecast models, so they were a bit more liberal for this year.   70% chance of above normal season 13-20 named storms 7-11 hurricanes 3-6 major hurricanes   2013 Actual Fearing the worst, this season turned out to be one of the quietest and least active in history. In fact, it was the lowest number of hurricanes since 1982.   15 tropical storms 2 hurricanes No major hurricanes   2014 Predictions As we can see, looking at past data can skew results in one way or another. In 2014, the season was considered average based on the low results of 2013.   70% chance of a normal season 8-13 named storms 3-6 hurricanes 1-2 major hurricanes   2014 Actual This year was much lower than average, although there were still two major hurricanes (Edouard and Gonzalo)   3 named storms 4 hurricanes 2 major hurricanes   2015 Predictions Because of the previous two years, this outlook was optimistic.   70% chance of a below normal season 6-11 named storms 3-6 hurricanes 0-2 major hurricanes   2015 Actual 8 named storms 2 hurricanes 2 major hurricanes   2016 Predictions Because the last few years were kind of all over the place, NOAA took a much more conservative view of the upcoming hurricane season.   45% chance of a normal season 30% chance of an above-normal season 25% chance of a below normal season   10-16 named storms 4-8 hurricanes 1-4 major hurricanes   2016 Actual This year saw an abundance of major hurricanes, including Gaston and Matthew, the latter of which caused significant damage and a cost of around $10 billion. Unfortunately, as 2017 would prove, this could become the new normal.   9 named storms 3 hurricanes 4 major hurricanes   2017 Predictions This year was a pretty crazy year for storms and hurricanes, and NOAA predicted that it was likely to be an above-normal season. They just didn't know how right they were going to be.   45% chance of an above-normal season 35% chance of a normal season 20% chance of a below normal season   11-17 named storms 5-9 hurricanes 2-4 major hurricanes   2017 Actual We saw the likes of hurricane Harvey, Irma, and Maria all strike within close proximity of each other, and we're still seeing the aftermath of the damage caused by them. This year was one of the worst on record, especially considering the outcome of the previous four years.   8 named storms 7 hurricanes 3 major hurricanes   Bottom Line - Are Hurricane Forecasts Accurate? Overall, it seems as if NOAA knows what it's doing, and its models are about as accurate as we can get. While there can be some disparity between the numbers, the fact is that the weather can change on a whim. Some storms will turn into hurricanes, while others will dissipate before they make landfall.   However, if the past two years are any indication, we could be looking at stronger storms, which could spell disaster for those living in the pathway of these hurricanes. According to this year's projections, we could be looking at seven named storms, four hurricanes, and three major hurricanes.   So what is conclusion in how this plays into whether you will have a busy season as an independent adjuster?   Even if NOAA gets the prediction right….. no one can predict how many adjusters will be needed because we can't predict how much damage will be caused, how many home will be destroyed, and how many lives disrupted.   While we as independent adjusters can't plan on the weather, people plan on us being super heroes and coming to help them when the need does arise, so let's be ready this storm season, bags packed, trained up, and ready to go because……   WE ARE IA's!   Your Guide, Chris Stanley   Sources: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2018/04/05/busy-hurricane-season-forecast-2018/484861002/ http://web.mit.edu/12.000/www/m2010/teams/neworleans1/predicting%20hurricanes.htm https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/index.php?season=2017&basin=atl http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/outlooks/hurricane-archive.php
