You don't start on the top team, you don't love your coach, you're not the “obvious” recruit. So what? Olivia Heidel just turned that story into a pro contract in Germany.Welcome to Oak Performance Radio, where we talk about what it really takes to perform at a high level. The show looks at training, preparation, and decision-making through real athletes, coaches, and experiences, on and off the field.Episode HighlightsIn today's episode, Adam Lane sits down with setter Olivia Heidel to walk through the real path from freshman team and twos squads to Division I, a conference championship, and finally signing to play professionally in Germany. They get into what it's like to be labeled early, play for a mentally and emotionally abusive coach, walk away from a five–year full ride, use the transfer portal the right way, and rebuild your love for the game inside a healthy culture. Parents, athletes, and coaches get an honest look at what actually matters if you want to play at a high level and still like who you are when you're done.Episode OutlineIntroduction and Background of Olivia HeidelOlivia's Journey to Professional VolleyballChallenges and Successes at Michigan TechTransition to IUP and UNCWPreparation for Professional Volleyball in GermanyAdvice for Young AthletesEpisode Chapters00:00 Intro & who is Olivia01:21 Deciding to play pro volleyball02:40 Finding an agent and German club05:32 Signing the contract & leaving in August08:10 Moving overseas and family reactions10:03 Club and high school years on “twos” teams12:19 Illness, COVID year, and lost recruiting time16:45 Full ride to Michigan Tech and toxic environment20:18 Entering the transfer portal and choosing IUP22:26 Winning conference and NCAA run at IUP28:01 Following coaches to UNCW and rebuilding35:00 D2 vs D1 speed, physicality, and coaching37:36 Advice to athletes on labels, fit, and leaving43:10 Adam's reflections and closingConclusionOlivia's path is not the clean highlight reel people expect. She was not the obvious star, did not get the perfect first college fit, and did not ride one school from freshman year to senior night.

"I couldn't let the secrets that controlled my past control my future." — Bridey Telen-Heidel In this compelling episode of Uncorking a Story, Mike Carlon interviews author and TEDx speaker Bridey Thelen-Heidel about her powerful memoir, Bright Eyes: Surviving Our Monsters and Learning to Live Without Them.  Bridey opens up about her journey through a tumultuous childhood marked by frequent relocations and the trauma of living with her mother's choices. Through resilience and a commitment to healing, Bridey transformed her pain into a narrative that offers hope and solidarity to others with similar experiences. Her story touches on the importance of reclaiming one's truth, the therapeutic power of writing, and the challenges of publishing personal memoirs. This episode is a must-listen for writers, readers, and anyone interested in the redemptive power of storytelling. Key Takeaways Writing a memoir is not just about telling your story; it's about taking ownership of your truth. Repressed trauma can lead to physical illness; healing often requires facing those hidden pains. The journey to publication is challenging, especially for memoir writers dealing with personal topics. A randomly-chosen sample from the deepest most thorough analysis that you can find anywhere of the profoundly ancient Epic of Gilgamesh, on patreon for patrons only for one year: We examine the Epic of Gilgamesh as a piece of literature, for its strange dream-like style and form, its points of similarity to Biblical and ancient Greek and European mythology, and finally, its deep levels of psychological and political allegory, ultimately revealing the love between Enkidu and Gilgamesh as a parable of the fraught relationship between civilization and the wild. You can check out her work at her blog, Bright Eyes. Bridey's day job is teaching high school English and she has had Bruce's three children as students.Bruce has received numerous awards for his memoir, Refraction. While still busy promoting Refraction and doing his day job as a graphic designer, Bruce has begun working on his next project, which will actually be a trilogy. We brought up the notorious Hank the Tank, a female bear that has been terrorizing Tahoe and Bridey related that a bear just broke into her garage and chugged down the oat milk in the fridge. She had to call Tahoe Toogee to bear-proof her house. We're hoping to have Toogee on as a guest soon.Bruce provided a video of a bear cub rescue he performed a few years ago. We can bearly wait to have Bridey and Bruce back again. Welcome back to another episode of the Period Chats podcast! Our guest today is Hannah Heidel. Hannah is a nutritionist and owner of Nourished Girl, which is an awesome company that has been a long-time partner of Funk It Wellness. Today's episode contains such a meaningful and impactful conversation. Hannah and I dive in to some of the ways that the wellness journey isn't always easy or linear, and also how hormone and period health can effect many people's experience of adolescence and early adulthood in pretty profound ways. We also talk about how the little changes we make in life can add up over time to create big health improvements, and about the many, many connections between synthetic hormones and certain mental health side effects. Hannah first reached out to Funk It when she was getting off of birth control pills, so we start our chat with her back-story. Hannah dealt with PCOS and cystic acne from an early age, and was prescribed birth control. While it helped her feel more social and normal, she eventually learned about its possible interplay with things like anxiety and some types of weigh gain.  Hannah and I talk about our experiences of feeling different, out-of-body, or not quite ourselves when we were on the pill, and how one might determine if they absolutely need birth control, or if there might be other options. She is now managing her health, hormones, and blood sugar in more holistic ways (including seed cycling!), and is not only experiencing a lot of improvements personally, but is sharing her knowledge and wisdom with her online community. We talk about what it's like to first discover that things like testosterone and progesterone levels can effect our life experiences so profoundly, and how we've learned over the years to embrace the ways that our bodies operate, and work with them to feel our best. We also chat about how it feels to be less of a partier as well as being more self-aware than average, and how our natural leadership qualities and callings in the wellness space also create some loneliness at times. Hannah shares some incredible soul wisdom about how happiness is an inside job, and how cultivating joy through movement, nutrition, doing things you love and building something valuable can help your physical and mental health.  Finally, we talk about enjoying and sharing the small things, creating community online, and inspiring others to find self-love!  So fam, be easy on yourself, take the pressure off, and take it one day at a time. We're all on this wellness path together! Follow Hannah on Insta: @NourishedGirl

In this conversation Steve Rossi speaks with Michael Asbill and Amanda Heidel, about Amanda's Mushroom Shed MFA thesis project, which explored the mushroom lifecycle as a model for community engagement through developing connections between the State University of New York at New Paltz Sculpture Program, the Biology Department, and the surrounding community. Themes relating to interdisciplinary collaborations, faculty mentorship, and individual vs. collaborative authorship are all explored. Steve Rossi is currently an Assistant Professor and Sculpture Program Head at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia, where he has been developing interdisciplinary studio art pedagogy connected to the varied fields of environmental ethics and occupational therapy. He received his BFA from Pratt Institute in 2000 and his MFA from the State University of New York at New Paltz in 2006. His work has been exhibited at Dorsky Curatorial Projects, Eco Art Space, NURTUREart, the Open Engagement Conference at the Queens Museum, Bronx Art Space, the Wassaic Project, the John Michael Kohler Art Center, the Jules Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts, and the public art festival Art in Odd Places among many others. He has participated in artist residencies with the Vermont Studio Center, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and Gallery Aferro in Newark, New Jersey. As a part-time faculty member, he has taught in the First Year Program at Parsons School of Design and the Sculpture Program and Art Education Program at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Michael Asbill weaves arts advocacy, community engagement, environmentalism, and curatorial endeavor into his installation and public art practice. His work has been experienced in venues such as Sporobole and Galerie Zybaldone (Sherbrooke, QC), Flux Factory (Long Island City, NY), The Oregon City Elevator, and the Poughkeepsie Train Station. As a core collaborator with Habitat for Artists, Michael contributed to eco and social engagement projects for Smack Mellon (Brooklyn, NY), Arts Brookfield (New York, NY), Washington DC's Commission on the Arts and Humanities, the Corcoran Museum (Washington, DC), and 601 Tully (Syracuse, NY). He has received numerous grants, awards, commissions, and honors including the New York State/Province of Quebec Artist in Residence Exchange Grant, inclusion in the “Introducing” series at the Roger Smith Hotel, and was honored, at the 2018 Arts Mid-Hudson/Ulster County Executive Arts Awards, with the title of “Artivist” which was invented to acknowledge his community contributions. Michael is the founder and director of CHRCH Project Space (Rosendale, NY), a residency for the development of pioneering, community-based, participatory artworks. "I don't understand when someone gives me something that's more than three steps, I can't do it and I just panic, but I can write you a book in three days. It's one of the reasons that I have trouble with functioning labels, and why the autistic community in general, has trouble with functioning labels. Because you can't call someone like me high-functioning because that's not accurate, and you can't call me low-functioning because that's not accurate. They're both accurate depending on what's going on,” says Jaime A. Heidel. Jaime joins this episode us to discuss “The Articulate Autistic”, step by step instructions, and setting boundaries.
