We hope you enjoy this insightful and inspirational conversation, and get a peak into aspects of Carol's relaunch story and her journey in founding iRelaunch.
At DA, we're all about discovering and harnessing disruption, but sometimes, disruption finds you. It's a fact of life – our car skids on ice we didn't see on the road up ahead. Your boat hits a reef at night. A business deal falls through out of nowhere, and there's nothing you can or could have done. Now that your car's in a snowbank, what's next? Our guest today has been there and back. After the company she worked for collapsed while she was on maternity leave, Carol Fishman Cohen decided to leave the workforce for 11 years to raise her children. Today, she's the CEO of her own company, iRelaunch. Carol's had to fight through the nitty-gritty of getting back into the office, remembering and trusting in her capabilities, and today her company helps others make the same jump. Her story is, quite literally, a case study in how people disrupt themselves in response to being disrupted.
Janet Peterson is Diversity Lead at iRelaunch, and like many on the iRelaunch team, Janet is a relauncher. Janet currently serves her community through Mocha Moms, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Women's Ministries. Janet discusses the initiatives, events, and programming that have made the biggest impact in diversifying the iRelaunch pool. Employers, relaunchers and others interested in impactful diversity measures - this episode is for you.

A notable percentage of people return to work within the first five years of retirement. But what's the pathway back? Here's one that may not be on your radar. Savvy organizations who need experienced talent have created returnship programs targeting people who are returning to work following a career break. While these programs primarily have focused on mothers re-entering the workforce, some include people returning from caregiving, medical issues and retirees. Shay Baker of Return Utah joins us to discuss how to return to work from a career break - for any reason. Baker is a returner having participated in Return Utah's inaugural cohort. And we know that that's because so many jobs were lost at the height of the pandemic, especially among women and particularly marginalized women. And so while Returnships and career reentry return to work programs did exist prior to the pandemic, and they were growing slowly and steadily prior to the pandemic, the pandemic brought about this need for employers to basically acquire talent and particularly diverse talent. So a lot of organizations looked to these career re-entry, return to work models to try to appeal to people, particularly women." On Returning to Work "We have individuals who've returned to the workforce after taking breaks to enhance their education, to start businesses, to volunteer, to run for political office. So re-entry for them is going to look different. Maybe you're not running your own company, but you're doing something that someone else is asking you to do, which comes with some adjustments. And we also have illness related career breaks, either caring for an elderly loved one or a child who may have been sick battling your own illness. And those come with an extensive amount of adjustments regardless of your reason." On Taking the Leap "First and foremost, just do it. Don't think too much. Just do it. If you think too much, you're going to back out.

"She could make anyone laugh and I wanted her to be paid for it. 'Mom, have you ever thought about being a stand-up comedian?' As she began dreaming of a comedy career, the reality of her current life as a stay-at-home mom sank in. She began to cry and told me it was too late for her. I could not bear to watch her struggle between ambition and doubt," wrote Zoya Garg, Zarna's daughter. Zarna Garg, an Indian immigrant, started her career as a lawyer and then spent 16 years as a stay-at-home mom. It was her kids who ultimately challenged her to go to an open mic night. That night changed her life and led her to success as a stand up comedian, finding her unique voice that relates to so many, especially women getting back into the workforce. Listen to Zarna's inspiring and humorous story in this previously recorded session that was initially aired as part of the iRelaunch video series.

Mindy S. Berkower is Chief Client Officer and General Counsel of iRelaunch, LLC. iRelaunch, a consulting, events, and content firm founded in 2007, is the pioneer, industry leader, and chief innovator in the return to work space, bringing progressive employers together with “career relaunchers”: educated, experienced professionals seeking to return to work after a career break. Since joining iRelaunch in 2013, Mindy has held multiple cross-functional roles encompassing marketing and communications, audience development, strategic planning, business development, client and partner relationship management, and legal. Currently, Mindy develops and manages key corporate client relationships, shapes iRelaunch's overall corporate client practice and policies, and leads iRelaunch's legal function as the sole in-house attorney. A career relauncher herself, Mindy practiced corporate and securities law in major New York City law firms before taking a multi-year career break to raise her two children. During her time away from paid work, Mindy used and enhanced her skills by project-managing important family undertakings and volunteering extensively in her community, including in what she calls “skin-thickening” PTA leadership roles. She is a lifelong New Yorker and received her JD from New York University School of Law and her BA in Political Science from Binghamton University (SUNY). Many of us pursue career paths because of parental expectations or fall into a career by accident. Taking a career break can often shed light on one's true interests and provide direction, leading to a career pivot. In other cases, as with Dorothy in ”The Wizard of Oz,” one's heart's desire has actually been close at hand all along. Mindy Berkower shares her story of leaving the grueling life of “big law” to raise her family, having a multi-year career break as a recovering lawyer and community volunteer, relaunching her career in a marketing role for a small company, and eventually, and happily, becoming the solo general counsel at the same company.
Chad Koenig is a Managing Director with Cushman & Wakefield's Atlanta Office Tenant Advisory Group. She is now a Senior Salesforce Business Analyst for Booz Allen Hamilton. In this episode, which is the first of our “The Importance of Significant Others in Relaunching” mini-series, we'll talk with Chad about how he and Kati navigated Kati's career break and her return to work.

Fellows from the earliest cohorts are now senior enough to be managing the newest participants, something we could only dream about back in 2007 when iRelaunch was founded.
Richard Eisenberg was, until recently, the Managing Editor of Next Avenue, the PBS's website for people 50+, and the editor of the site's Money & Policy and Work & Purpose channels. Richard was a previous guest for Episode 197 of the 3,2,1 iRelaunch podcast, when we discussed career progression trends for the 50+ worker, how COVID impacted those trends, and his predictions about what working behaviors will look like post-COVID. Since that conversation, Richard has retired from Next Avenue to start his "unretirement." In this episode, we ask him to turn the lens on himself and discuss his personal career journey, his thought process and expectations for this phase of his life and career, what “unretirement" looks like for him and some advice on how others might navigate it as well.

Episode Summary:Imagine taking a career break for 11 years and then returning to face an entirely different world of work, technology, and even culture. Carol Fishman Cohen did it, and quickly came to realize that there are many thousands of others – mostly women – who are looking to make the same transition. They had high-powered jobs, and now they want to get back in the game. As it turns out, hundreds of companies are thinking the same thing – how do we tap into this experienced talent pool? And so was born iRelaunch, Carol's work force re-entry consulting and training business that is normalizing the concept of a “career break” while demonstrating the value that “relaunchers” bring to the table. Cynthia Corby was a financial analyst on Wall Street before taking a 17 year career break. She decided to pursue a masters degree in business analytics as a way to relaunch her career. We met Cynthia when she reached out to us to see if she could focus her final project for her degree on data analysis that would be helpful to us. A dedicated relauncher and looking for a way to pay it forward, she produced a remarkable analysis to update our estimate of the number of relaunchers in the U.S. We discuss Cynthia's career path, her decision to relaunch by enrolling in a graduate school program and what it was like to be in the program. Carol Fishman Cohen, human resource consultant and CEO of iRelaunch, says that extended career breaks have always been common. Now the pandemic has made them even more widespread. So, companies are increasingly considering formal back-to-work programs and “returnships.” That's where employers set up special training and support mechanisms to ease people back into work. Cohen speaks about the best practices for organizations and returning workers alike. She's the author of the HBR article "Return-to-Work Programs Come of Age."
Today's episode of “3, 2, 1, iRelaunch” is a re-run of an interview Carol did in 2017 with Cheryl McGee Wallace, who later became Special Advisor and Guest Podcast Host for iRelaunch. Cheryl shares some of the pivotal moments from her relaunch journey, including the approach that she took with regards to informational interviewing and networking, and the three questions that she always asked. She also discusses the steps that she took to prepare for the iRelaunch Return to Work conference, how she strategically approached her discussions with the recruiters, and what happened after the conference. This interview is filled with actionable steps and advice for relaunchers, particularly for those who are planning to attend one of our upcoming virtual conferences.
