This first story of Dan's was mined from a Ghost Stories subreddit full of nothing but supposedly true paranormal encounters. The poster claims to have seen his fair share of all the gruesome horrors mankind has to offer during his time in the service but nothing he ever witnessed as a soldier ever terrified him quite as much as the inexplicable thing he saw in Okinawa. Then we explore the lore that surrounds Edmonton, Canada's supposedly haunted Firkins House, where the ghost of a child, a haunted doll, and more have supposedly been encountered on numerous occasions. Lynze has a fun tale that feels like your brother called you to tell you about his insane day work. What do two men discover while installing a Radon system? Lastly, a fun tale of Bill, a tour bus driving who never wanted to give up his job. Scared To Death Merch:Celebrate 300 episodes of Scared to Death with the killer new '300 Rituals' collection. Dan showers us with four tales for the 300th episode today! The first story revolves around real world tragedy in Virginia intersecting with the supernatural. Then, a mysterious death in Australia. This is followed by a third story about a disturbing legend in Africa that might be much more than modern folklore. Lastly, claims of an alien abduction bring us to Maine. Lynze rounds out this week with one tale about a couple of teens exploring an abandoned house and then takes us on a very peculiar ride to the UK for an unusual alien encounter. Beth Wolf, the founding producing artistic director of Midsommer Flight, discusses her company's upcoming production of Love's Labour's Lost, which has been performing for free in parks throughout Chicago since 2012. Beth reveals the planning that goes into her season; why Love's Labour's is such an important comedy right now; how for some reason outdoor summer Shakespeare is not everybody's jam; her invaluable partnership with the Chicago Park District; the value of having a non-dogmatic approach to the text; the importance of theatre people being able to wear multiple hats; and how Midsommer Flight is a valuable stepping stone for early-career actors on the rise. (Length 19:53) The post Midsommer Flight Dream appeared first on Reduced Shakespeare Company.
We begin this week in Pennsylvania with a story that involves a woman who starts to believe that something in her new house is coming for her family and trying to take it from her. Then, Dan takes us to Brazil to explore one of the more disturbing legends ever. The legend of Bárbara of the Pleasures. But Bárbara's story, is not so pleasurable. When her looks began to fade, did an aging woman in the early 19th century, once heralded as a legendary beauty, do the unthinkable to regain her youthful attractiveness? Next up, Lynze offers us a story with many complex layers ranging from sleep paralysis to cosmic connections. Rounding out the episode, she gives us a classic haunted house story! Dan's first of two tales covers the lore and supposed paranormal encounters associated with Dublin, Ireland's St. Michan's Church and the dead bodies that reside in the crypts beneath it. Then, we'll venture over Lake Pleasant, New York, and learn about some rumored murders associated with one of the town's founding fathers and the hauntings associated with those deaths. Lynze offers us three different tales this week. Her first is sad and sweet, a tale of a life taken to soon but possibly still here. Then, how strange would it be if strangers outside of your apartment could see a ghost in your home but you couldn't? Lastly, does watching horror flicks at home make you, your family and your personal space more susceptible to spirits moving in with you? What a crazy idea! A man in his 40s has a recollection of a very strange incident from his childhood but only recalls it after his brother passes away. Listen as Dan unfolds this creepy childhood tale. Then we visit a poltergeist case from Columbus, Ohio that made national headlines back in 1984. The story of Tina Resch and the so-called Columbus Poltergeist. After Dan's stories, Lynze gives us a little bit lighter scares but are super fun and fascinating. First, the Hat Man and how one might manifest him. Then, she shares about an attachment that seems to be shared by three family members. Scared To Death Merch:Celebrate 300 episodes of Scared to Death with the killer new '300 Rituals' collection. We start this week in Brownwood, Texas where a murder tragic murder may have added additional paranormal energy to a property already rumored to be haunted. Then, is a spirit sending emails from the great beyond? A short and very strange confirmation-type tale that really makes you wonder what's possible. Lastly, we head to Los Angeles to explore the reportedly haunted Sowden House, where some think Elizabeth Short, aka the Black Dahlia, may have been murdered. And that her killer may haunt this location. Then we go to Lynze's side of the show for another three tales. First, we examine the power of the hat man. Can he change us and our destiny? Next up, a creepy haunted house vibe with a construction worker being not-so-alone during his work day. And lastly, the tale of a possible new creature to fear! Hoe kijken wetenschappers daarnaar? The boys chat about the massively underrated Drag Race Sverige (aka Sweden), the messy brilliance of Ted Lasso season 3 and the flawlessness of Hannah Waddingham, and how they might just be too old to properly appreciate Heartbreaker. Then, like the cumsluts for Swedish pop they are, they dive headfirst into the wonderful, wild, wacky world of Melodifestivalen. They take a look at the yearly Swedish music festival that ultimately chooses who will represent the country at the Eurovision Song Contest. They delight in everything from the divas on parade to the accents that sound vaguely like Kermit the Frog to the incredible music to the way the Swedish crowd flops their balloons around. That's not a euphemism. Then Cesco chooses five Mello songs he considers to be important. Not the best or his favorites, necessarily, but five songs that have had an impact on the contest. Get your maypoles ready, folks! Midsommer may be over, but things are starting to heat up round these parts. And before we're all overtaken by schlager fever, Cesco and Anthony add songs to the ESC Etc. playlists. Consider this your MelFest 101, ladies, gays, and theys!

We are back!!! Sorry for missing a week, folks. Had some audio issues with this episode and needed a little time to figure out the best approach. 99% of the audio glitches were on my end, and my guest offers some amazing insights that I didn't want to risk losing by reshooting the episode or losing context by editing out the question. All said, John Patrick Bray and I delve into some great topics and themes including - storytelling and playing with structure, the process of playwriting, the exercise of "negotiating over an object", and a different mindset when it comes to stage directions. We also discuss the concept of "great reckonings in small rooms", the struggle of dry spells and making playwriting a priority, subtext vs the obvious, and finding opportunities. We manage a tangent into the realm of movies and our feeling about Midsommer and Heritage that I find amusing. I hope you can forgive the technical difficulties and still mine through the knowledge within. I know it can be distracting, but I promise it'll be worth the it in the end. Thanks for you support and patience. Enjoy!John Patrick Bray has written plays under grants from The National Endowment for the Arts and the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Louisiana, and has earned commissions from theatre companies and arts agencies around the country. He has been a Semifinalist for the O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, Semifinalist for the Ashland New Play Festival, Semifinalist for the Princess Grace Foundation Playwriting Award; a Finalist for the Kernodle Playwright Prize; and Winner of the Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights. “Hold your breath, make a wish, count to three”, because we got to the 1971 classic Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory with our bestie Jared Anderson. Arguably one of the weirdest children's movies ever made, and one we still can't shake off. When Charlie Bucket gets the coveted Golden Ticket to tour a mysterious candy maker's factory insanity ensues when the ticket winners start getting taken out like the cast of Midsommer. This movie almost destroyed Scott and Jared's friendship, over a bitchy social media post, but we're here to talk it out with Pete moderating like couples counseling. We're here to talk out what makes this movie moving, strange, and very much a product of 1970s filmmaking. Overlooked at the time of its release Wonka ended up getting a devout cult following in the 1980s thanks to television airings and home video. We discuss what exactly makes this movie “gay” enough to choose it for the pod, all the rotten kids at the center of the Wonka's morality test, and what our feelings are on the contentious Tim Burton 2005 movie with Johnny Depp. When reflecting back on Willy Wonka we are still ask questions about this movie's weird, but delightful tone. Is Mrs. Bucket's somber song "Cheer up Charlie” the most fast forwarded moment of our childhood? And more importantly why exactly does Wonka have this psychelic tunnel in his Wondrous Boat Ride? Florence Pugh was Oscar and BAFTA nominated for her role as Amy March in the adaptation of Little Women. She has won huge acclaim for films including Midsommer, Lady Macbeth, and the Marvel adventure Black Widow. She also played the lead in the television adaptation of John Le Carré's The Little Drummer Girl. More recently she's been on the big screen in Don't Worry Darling, and 18th century Irish drama The Wonder. Florence tells John Wilson how her performing ambitions during a primary school nativity show in which she played Mary with a northern accent, borrowed from her Grimsby-born grandparents. She chooses, as one of her most significant creative inspirations, a woman called Linda Mace who made costumes for all the school productions, and whose store room full of period clothes fuelled Florence's imaginations. She recalls her breakthrough role in The Falling, about a fainting phenomenon at an English girls' school in the late 1960s, and how she was inspired by the film's director Carol Morley. She also pays tribute to casting director Shaheen Baig who helped her secure roles in subsequent films including Lady Macbeth, and remembers working alongside Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson when she played Cordelia in a television version of King Lear. Florence Pugh chooses the song She's Only Happy In the Sun by the American singer songwriter Ben Harper as source of inspiration, and reflects on her own musical ambitions which started as a teenage singer-songwriter posting videos on YouTube under the name Flossie Rose. She also discusses the pressures of fame, gossip columns and why she's learned to stop searching for references to herself in social media. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Cults are weird. Unlike normal religions (from which many cults stem), cults are usually based more around charismatic individuals rather than simple doctrine. Which means the followers of cults can often get a little crazy because they're following the whims of an individual rather than boring old text from a book. And this is why religious groups with charismatic leaders (i.e evangelical Televangelists and hardline Imams), become crazy and cultish too. Our lovely Andreas Helixfinger inspired this cast with an idea about how horrible cults can be in fiction. He made a newspost about that on the last Sunday of February. One of the interesting things I find about depictions of cults in fiction are the difference between how the right and left show cults. The rightwing version of what a cults is usually involves satanism, pentagrams, goats, human sacrifice, blood, knives etc. While the more leftwing version is of a creepily nice, ultra conservative, uptight group of people who live in perfect houses, dress very neatly, have their hair just right and are usually very rich, but under the surface they're all creepy murderers or sex fiends or demon worshipers or something. Some of the fictional cults we mention in the cast are various cults in Warhammer 40k; the Chaos cultists, the Imperial cult, The machine cult, the genesteeler cults… It's funny how the Chaos Cultists mirror our real world cultish people: Slaneesh cultists are sex maniacs B&D, S&M people; Khorn followers are death metalheads; Tzeentch followers would be Q-Anon conspiracy theorists; And followers of Nurgle wold be antivaxers. Some good fictional cults were shown in The Wickerman, Midsommer, Hot Fuzz, Randal and Hopkirk Deceased (the reboot series) has about 3 different cult episodes, Welcome to NHK has a brilliant depiction of a multi level marketing cult (Anime is FULL of cults), and Tantz mentioned a great Korean movie with a cult: Keuraim Peojeul. This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Remedial Magic - Puddles and ripples of light and dappled shadow spreading outward ever wider and wider. Celine and Stephen review Midsommer, a movie released in 2019, directed by Ari Aster and starring Florence Pugh. There are a number of readings of this movie but one that is often overlooked is the most obvious - that of recruitment and indoctrination into a cult.

Talk abiut how Toni Collette is in need of an Oscar and how Florence Pugh is the queen of our hearts!Hereditary is streaming on Hulu!Midsommer is streaming on Amazon Prime!Email Us at TheMiseducationofDavidandGary@gmail.comFollow us on Instagram:@Gaspatchojones@Homewreckingwhore@The_Miseducation_of_DandG_PodIf you love the show check out our Teepublic shop!https://www.teepublic.com/user/gaspatchojones
Since it's now September, why not some spook? Today we discuss the 2019 instant horror classic, Midsommer, starring Florence Pugh, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Will Poulter, and a LOT of Swedish actors. Midsommer is a product of the A24 studio, a newer up and coming production company that also funded movies like Hereditary, Ex Machina, and The Witch. This movie doesn't really present horror in the traditional sense, as we discuss, and is one of the paramount films of the next generation, so we decided to watch and discuss to see if it's truly a must watch. CONTENT WARNING: gore, suicidal themes, mental health, pagan practices
