They may not have called it "memoir," but early modern English authors were producing all kinds of life-writing, from snarky private diaries to published accounts of religious conversion and manifestos on breast-feeding. Whether or not Shakespeare's work contains anything autobiographical remains a matter of speculation, but he certainly understood the desire to control how your life story would be recorded for posterity. In this episode, we talk about the theme of life-writing in Shakespeare's work and look at some actual autobiographies written by his contemporaries. A wealthy and well-educated daughter of country gentry, Elizabeth Isham wrote her Book of Remembrance at age thirty. Although her intended readers were her family members and not the public, her nearly sixty-thousand-word book bears the closest resemblance to our modern memoir genre, with its familiar themes--sibling rivalry, mental illness, societal pressure on women--and its contemporary style of self-reflection. Michelle, whose new book is Green World: A Tragicomic Memoir of Love & Shakespeare, explains how Isham's ability to make sense of her life was truly ahead of her time.
For New Orleans-based film composer Sultana Isham, plunging into research on her subject matter is as important as creating her score. Trained as a classical violinist, she moved from her native Virginia to New Orleans to steep herself in one of her passions, the peoples, history and culture of Créolité throughout the Americas and abroad. Once in New Orleans, Sultana Initially busked in various venues around New Orleans and then started playing with Les Cenelles, an ensemble devoted to Creole folk music and work by composers of color. She began to write her own pieces, and in 2017 she put out her first EP, “Blood Moon,” a mixture of avant-garde classical and pop fusion, attracting the attention of director Zandashé Brown, who hired her to write the score for the horror short “Blood Runs Down.” Other directors soon came knocking on her door.Director Angela Tucker hired her to be both researcher and composer on the documentary, “All Skinfolk Ain't Kinfolk,” a PBS documentary about a historic New Orleans mayoral race between two Black women. Among Sultana's other credits are “The Neutral Ground,” which also aired on PBS and received an Emmy nomination for best historical documentary, and the PBS series “Making Black America,” narrated by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.Sultana's scholarship continues unabated. LSU Press is developing an essay she co-wrote with Dr. Denise Frazier – “Mémwa Nwa: Agency, Sound and Women in AfroCreole Louisiana Folk Music” – into a book. A month before this interview, she concluded her residency at Ace Hotel New Orleans by co-curating an exhibit titled “Them Handy Sisters,” celebrating the careers of noted performers and musicologists Dr. Geneva Handy Southall and D. Antoinette Handy. Here, Sultana explains how she developed her musical skills hand-in-hand with her research practice and why heeding her heart and feeding her curiosity continue to open incredible new doors for her.https://www.sultanaisham.com/

Alumni) and acupuncture have given him invaluable tools to diagnose and treat the musculoskeletal and neurologic issues that are limiting the health and performance of our loved domestic species. Dr. Amy and Dr. O are certified by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association. This modality helps the nervous system attempt to achieve its maximum potential allowing your animal to function to the best of its ability. They will utilize a series of manual adjustments in an attempt to restore normal motion to the joints of your animal's body. The science of chiropractic care has discovered throughout the last one hundred years that misalignment of joints (subluxation), especially the vertebrae, adversely alters nerve function from around those areas. Altered nerve impulses leaving the spinal column can adversely affect the function of organs and tissues supplied by that nerve. This altered function can lead to pain, disease, fatigue, muscle weakness, poor balance, immune suppression, etc. Animal chiropractic is the art, science, and philosophy that releases the body's inherent recuperative powers and allows the body to deal with the relationship between the nervous system and the spinal column and its associated structures. Remember, the power that made the body heals the body, it happens no other way.

Isham Hipsher, from Anchorage Alaska, an intelligent and methodical personality, like many other people, was someone I immediately resonated and connected with. Growing up with no money, he, like many people, was inspired to enter the world of real estate investing by Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad. At an early age, he already knew he wanted more in life. It took him about 15 years to take action and he was very much guilty of passing on opportunities that came his way because of his limiting belief. His first taste in the real estate business was when he became a property manager for a broker whose lifestyle inspired him to dive into real estate investing. He left his W2 job, told his wife what he had wanted to do for the longest time, and tried to learn all that he can about wholesaling real estate through YouTube University. He recalled the first time he went under contract, he felt like he had made all the mistakes one can possibly make but he told himself it was ok, he picked up all the learnings from that first deal he did, which actually made him $10K. He came across a podcast I did a while back and Isham resonated with me, especially on what motivates me in this business more than the money. He signed up for Astroflipping and gives a testimony as to how the course was packed with so much value and how it was such a game changer for him. He studied the materials, trusted the systems and process, and took action. He tested doing lead generation through agent outreach with his agent friends out in Florida, and proved that it works. Now he has multiple deals in the pipeline, all lined up to close escrow. Isham's story is that of an ordinary guy who has an extraordinary heart and genuine intention to give himself and his family, the lifestyle that they want and deserve and how he is moving closer to that goal by doing the right actions. He used to be in the military and now he is wholesaling houses full time. Every once in a while, I have the honor to interview someone who's not only an expert in their field—and it is invariably a VERY interesting field—but who is also a great speaker, a great person, and someone who truly knows how to tell a story, which, anyone who knows me knows that I place a very high value on that. Such is the case with Mike Isham. Mike is a farmer, and while he does a lot of traditional farming things, he is also a premier maple syrup producer. I'm willing to bet you don't know just how complicated—and fascinating—the process is that converts maple sap to maple syrup. Well, you're about to find out.
Talking about sex can be an uncomfortable, delicate, and often times a confusing conversation BUT it is a necessary discussion regardless of the population you work with. In this talk, we meet with Kerri Isham to talk sex, masturbation, and what we can do to help teach these difficult concepts to vulnerable populations. Learning Objectives: 1. Tact the importance of pairing accurate terminology, physiological sensations, and environmental contexts when teaching sexual education and how it can generalize to other areas of their life. 2. Describe how deprivation of sexual release can affect a learner's behavior. Take Aways- your bite-sized educational noms - It is important to teach learner's accurate terminology so they are able to correctly state feelings and sensations. We should consider teaching our vulnerable populations about 5yrs before they encounter physiological changes. Not only give the learner the words to use, but also benefits later medical visits, potential counselling with giving the learner a repertoire that is understood by others. - Sometimes hoarding faecal matter doesn't fit neatly into a functional analysis. There's more to it than just simple escape. If the individual feels unsafe or uncomfortable in their environment then they may engage in behaviors that increase the “feeling of safety”. - While teaching sex education may not seem in a BCBA's wheelhouse, there are multiple tools that a BCBA can utilize- collaboration with other professionals, use of schedules, task analysis, and discriminative stimuli. - If a person is deprived of sexual release for an extended period of time, they may “act out” in ways that are considered inappropriate. There should be significant consideration of the principles of reinforcement as well as an analysis of the functions of behavior when working with sexual behaviors. - We can and should collaborate with other professionals and utilize their materials in a way that fits our science. Ala Isham, Founder and Creative Director of Ala von Auersperg, co-founder of the National Center for Victims of Crime, and founder of the Brain Trauma Foundation, shared the true story behind her title with us on Sunday, December 19th, 2021.Ala had been working with the designer Antonio Gual for years, creating such pieces for herself, when in 2015 he suggested applying her original nature- and travel-inspired artworks onto them. From there, Ala Von Auersperg — the brand — was born, with her daughter Sunny Kneissl joining the team as their in-house stylist. Since day one, they've focused on making women feel wonderful in the feminine flow of the fabric, the transparency that reveals but also partially conceals the body, and the soft touch of textiles on the skin.Their goal is to help all women realize that they can be glamorous, no matter their size or age. AvA is about enjoying life as you are and being the best version of yourself because when a woman looks her best she feels better about herself. We all have roles to play and we're going to do them more effectively when we're at our best —and, frankly, there is too much fun to be had to be focused exclusively on what you're wearing. This passion for creating clothes that boost a woman's confidence also underpins Ala's philanthropic work, specifically her work with women who have experienced violence, because the thing that those crimes take away from women is their self-esteem. The National Center for Victims of Crime, which Ala co-founded in 1985, works to remedy this loss, while the Brain Trauma Foundation (originally the Sunny Von Bülow Coma and Head Trauma Research Institute), which she founded in 1986, supports ongoing research on traumatic brain injuries. Together with Ala's conservation efforts, these causes advance my ultimate aim as a daughter, mother, and grandmother: to leave the world a better place.SUE SAYS"Growing up in what Ala described as a privileged upbringing, she is grateful for the opportunities and experiences she had. At the same time, there were events in her life that truly tested her resilience. What she discovered about herself was that she could always move forward and never give up on life...there was always too much to be thankful for."Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/women-to-watch-r/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Combine this with his willingness to create new musical worlds, working in virtually any medium or genre, well, it’s the perfect alchemy for a film and television music composer. This time, we go over our Waterworld Movie Review, a massively overbudgeted epic of a film. Along the way we ask, how shameless is this film a rip-off of Mad Max, is this a pro-environmental film, and is Dennis Hooper a convincing villain? Let's dive in... Waterworld Movie Cast and Crew Directed by Kevin Reynolds: Reynolds has establish a solid working relationship with Kevin Costner after directing films like Fandango, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Rapa Nui that all featured Costner. Therefore, it seemed natural for Reynolds to direct this Costner-led sci-fi adventure film. Kevin Costner as the Mariner: In the mid-90's, Costner was Hollywood's leading man starring Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Dances with Wolves, JFK, and The Bodyguard. Think how popular Dwayne Johnson or Tom Cruise is now and you have an idea of how much of a box office draw Costner was during the late 80's into the 90's. Dennis Hopper as The Deacon: While the legendary actor has had a stellar career, his star had faded as the 80's rolled into the 90's and really began when he accepted a role in the now infamous adaptation of Super Mario Bros. He returned to prominence again after his villainous performance in Speed, but never returned to the renown he enjoyed during the 60's and 70's. Jeanne Triplehorn as Helen: She was just beginning her career as she starred in films such as Basic Instinct and The Firm. Since then, she's been a mainstay on television after long runs on the shows Big Love and Criminal Minds. Tina Majorino as Enola: If the name doesn't sound familiar, viewers may remember her the young clothing and hair accessory vendor in the cult classic Napolean Dynamite. She has also appeared in television shows such as Veronica Mars, True Blood, and Big Love. Also starring: Michael Jeter as Old Gregor Kim Coates as Drifter R.D. Call as Atoll Enforcer Gerard Murphy as The Nord Jack Black as Smoker Plane Pilot (this is a 'blink and you'll miss it' cameo) An Underwater Production Initially, Waterworld was already approved for a budget of $100 million. Now that was in the early 90's, and was a massive budget. Adjusted for inflation, that would be equivalent to $174 million today and this had the makings of a success for any studio. It had a decent science fiction premise and Hollywood's most prominent actor at the time, but the budget slowly began to creep up. A storm had destroyed many of the massive sets that were built for the film forcing the production to shut down to allow for the sets to be rebuilt. This added $35 million to the budget and by the time filming had wrapped, the production budget came out to be $175 million. With promoting and marking costs added, Waterworld's final budget came out to $235 million. Many aspects of the film would be just as troubled. The film's original composer, Mark Isham, was fired after completing about a quarter of the music and was replaced by James Newton Howard. Costner remarked that Isham's firing was due to his core sounding "too bleak and ethnic" for the tone of the film. In addition, Kevin Reynolds left the production citing frequent clashes with Kevin Costner. Prior to the film, Costner had won an Oscar for directing Dances With Wolves and maybe thought his input would be welcome given his past success. However, according to Reynolds, Costner became a "backseat director" and forced Reynolds to leave the film entirely. The relationship was strained so much that the two would not work together until Costner was cast in the miniseries Hatfields & McCoys. It Could Happen ... Sort Of The premise of Waterworld is that Earth has become completed submerged following the melting of the polar ice caps and has forced the remaining humans to live on the water. This premise isn't entirely from fiction, as there has been recent geological findings that had led researchers to theorize that Earth was entirely covered in water roughly 3 billion years ago. However,
