In today's interview Bjorn Thorleifsson, the Head of Research and Insights at amp Sound Branding, delves into the importance of sound in marketing, specifically focusing on sonic branding. He provides valuable insights into how marketers should be thinking about leveraging sound, emphasizing its emotional impact, cross-cultural relevance, and the need for a flexible and holistic approach. As technology continues to evolve, brands that invest in creating a distinctive and memorable sonic identity are likely to leave a lasting impression on consumers. Some key takeaways: The Rise of Sensory Marketing: With the advent of technology like smart speakers and platforms such as TikTok, sensory marketing is becoming increasingly crucial. Brands are now thinking beyond campaign-driven sound and exploring how to create brand equity through a holistic approach to sound. The Emotional Impact of Sound: Sound has a unique ability to affect emotions quickly and deeply, often faster than visuals. Bjorn compares it to being a "highway to our emotions," making it a powerful tool for marketers to connect with consumers on an emotional level. Sonic Branding vs. Sound: Sonic branding involves using music and sound to benefit companies, creating a recognizable brand identity through sound. It goes beyond a simple sound logo, aiming to build memory structures for the brand through a more holistic and flexible sonic identity. Sharing Sonic IP: Unlike visual IP, releasing sonic elements can create a sense of community and engagement. Holistic Approach to Sonic Branding: Sonic touchpoints vary for each brand and can include elements like hold music, message notifications or payment confirmation. UX UI sounds, such as notification sounds, can be crucial for building brand recognition. The Durability of Sonic Branding: Sonic branding has a long-lasting impact, creating memories that can be recalled even after years. Nostalgia plays a role, but flexibility allows brands to adapt and resonate with new generations.

Michele Arnese is the founder of the leading Sonic Branding Agency amp. His team has developed audio brands for clients such as Mercedes-Benz, Mastercard, BMW, UniCredit, and more. We discussed how to build audio brands, sonic identity, and more this week on the On Brand podcast. About Michele Arnese Designed in Italy and assembled in Germany, Michele is a self-driven strategic and creative thinker with a strong entrepreneurial approach: he founded the worldwide leading Sonic Branding Agency amp in 2009. In the field of audio branding, he's considered one of the world's foremost experts, with clients including Mercedes-Benz, Mastercard, Deloitte, Porsche, BBVA, Geberit, BMW, UniCredit, MINI, Triumph, The Linde Group, and a range of international awards for his work with amp (among others, four Red Dot Awards in a row and an ADC in silver). He's a member of the prestigious Audio Branding Society and also a Guest Professor at the renowned design university NABA/Nuova Accademia delle Belle Arti in Milan, where he teaches Sound Branding for the Master's Certificate in Sound Design. Episode Highlights “Every brand has a sound. The question is who defines it?” Michele began our exploration of sonic branding with this truth bomb. Is audio branding more of a thing now or has it always been there? “You're probably asking the wrong guy,” joked Michele, who's run an audio branding agency since 2009! “But the fragmentation of the brand ecosystem is a big part of the recent activity.” Where do you start with sonic branding? “We had to invent a process. First, you have to analyze the brand. Then we develop sonic principles based on this. We then create mood boards that reflect what we call the sonic brand DNA.” Michele shared how the amp team worked with Mastercard on their new point-of-purchase sonic identity system. Want to hear more about this? I chatted with Mastercard CMO Raja Rajamannar about this here on the On Brand podcast. Listen now. What's one thing we can do to start our own audio branding journeys? “Open up your brand,” stresses Michele. “Everyone thinks they're a DJ but you need to start with a design-oriented process supported by data.” What brand has made Michele smile recently? As Michele noted, it's great when a client can make you smile. He shared a smile from the Super Bowl work his team did for Avocados from Mexico. To learn more, go to ampsoundbranding.com and connect with Michele on LinkedIn.

How a brand gains power in our rapidly changing world through multisensory branding is something Raja has impressively demonstrated with MasterCard. Under his care, MasterCard grew into a superbrand. Within ten years, the brand value tripled, revenues and profits doubled - and the trend accelerates. With insights from psychology and behavioral science, Raja recognized early on that the most important source of growth is a strong brand whose meaning people experience with all their senses. Thanks to Raja, MasterCard is now a prime example of multisensory brand management. People can not only see the "Priceless" promise, but also hear, smell, taste, and feel it. "Where words fail, music speaks." We're living in the golden age of audio. Acoustic interfaces are exploding. Smartphones, kitchen appliances, websites, and our cars already listen to our voice. More and more brands are seeking their own personal sound. I talk with Uli Reese, co-owner of sound branding agency AMP, about what exactly a sonic identity is, why audio branding is a competitive advantage for brands, and why the future of branding will be multisensory. Uli has won virtually every award there is to win for music and sound: from ADC Nails to Golden Lions to Emmys - and even a student Oscar. For the past 10 years, he has run the "101 Great Minds" project in which he interviews CMO's around the world on Music, Brands and Behavior. In 2019, Mastercard introduced the new Sonic Brand Identity of Mastercard, which was developed by amp and has since won many awards. A particularly exciting project as Mastercard has been systematically investing in its multi-sensory brand identity for 10 years. With great success. Mastercard's brand value, as calculated by Interbrand, has risen from 3 to 13 billion euros during this time. Among other things, we talk about: - How Uli lost to a 12-year-old at 16 as a budding tennis pro, and how that helped him land his first job in the music industry, - why James Bond can also be heard in a song written by Adele, - why a 2-3 second sound logo is too long today, - why brands earn trust by the trickle but lose it by the bucketload, - how the CMOs of leading brands see the future of brand management. Uli Reese´s Screensaver-quote: "Do good when nobody is watching."

Was also ist Kreativität?

A serialized audio version of the book comMUSICation by John Groves. Concentrating on the sense of hearing, the book tells how the powerful medium of music can influence our emotions, our thoughts - and our (consumer) behaviour. How music can trigger memories – not only of a holiday, a romantic evening, or a person but also of a specific brand. In this podcast, John Groves looks at different aspects of communicating with sound and music, like Sociology, Neurology, Economics, and Marketing. The reader gradually starts to understand what „Sound Branding“ is all about.
