The emotional, some say spiritual, effect music has on us is notoriously difficult to put into words. It's sort of like analyzing why something is funny. The reality ever exceeds our verbal grasp. Why are minor chords sad and majors happy? Why, when you hear a song from your childhood is there a superglue of emotion attached, bringing you instantly to those moments long ago? This week's guest is one of the greats in the choral music world. If you enjoy music with a lush, cinematic sound created for multiple voices on the exquisite side, Morten Lauridsen is your man. The most frequently performed American composer of choral music, Lauridsen is a National Medal of Arts recipient (2007), he was composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale (1994–2001), and has been a professor of composition at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than 50 years. His work has been recorded on over 200 CDs including five with Grammy nominations. We're talking serious musical gravitas here. On November 11, 2018, a massive concert for international television is being held at the Brandenburg Gate in Germany to mark the centenary of the end of World War One. In addition to Welsh composer Karl Jenkins' Mass for Peace, the other piece selected is Lauridsen's beautiful Lux Aeterna. I predict not a dry eye on that night. You can imagine my surprise when, during the interview, the great man spontaneously began playing a portion of his classic O Magnum Mysterium to explain why the notes for the word “Virgo” ground the piece in a special way! In this interview, you will learn: Why every artist has to risk failure; as not trying guarantees failure How Lauridsen became a late bloomer as a composer, at age 50, and maybe how you can, too Why poetry deserves a massive revival The importance of stillness and quiet for human serenity and creativity The mysterious way in which music connects us to the divine Resources mentioned in this episode: O Magnum Mysterium performance Lux Aeterna performance Profound talk by director Karl Paulnack to music freshmen at Boston College Conservatory CD album, Morten Lauridsen: Lux Aeterna; Madrigali; Ave Maria; Ubi Caritas CD album streaming, Lauridsen: Mid-Winter Songs Connect with Morten: www.mortenlauridsen.net
Karl Jenkins has had a career of contrasts – from accomplished jazz fusion, prog rock and the worlds of film and advertising, to phenomenal success in concert halls around the world as a composer of music that delights audiences and often defies categorisation; music that is rhythmic, emotional – and hugely popular: he just might be the most performed living composer in the world. In these special programmes, Sir Karl Jenkins joins Donald Macleod to talk about his life and music ahead of the composer's 80th birthday.

Not the World Cup was a "glorious celebration of classical and world music" that ran alongside a small men's football competition in late 2022. Each team in each game of the football was represented by a short piece of (largely classical) music - 110 pieces in all from 107 composers (including 41 pieces by women): loads of great music and loads of new discoveries. I got together with my friend the conductor and writer Lev Parikian to pick some highlights and talk about a few of the things we learnt - about music, about how we listen and how it makes us feel. Listening time 41 mins. Here's a Youtube playlist of our favourite things of all from Not the World Cup and a playlist of everything that was clipped in the episode. What do you think? Ruth Keggin-Gell is the Manx Language Development Officer with Culture Vannin - dedicated to encouraging people to get interested and involved in wider use of the Manx language. On AT YOUR SERVICE today they discuss how this could be done, and Ruth has details of the half-day workshop she's leading - CREE AS ANNYM (Heart and Soul) using Manx for worship in easy and accessible ways. It's on Friday 25 March from 9:30am to 12:30pm with hot drinks served on arrival from 9am and an optional lunch (£7 per person) served at the end. Today it's B for Breath ... And Ruth has a video series, based on the book, which you can view on line at www.ruthricebooks.online The videos are quite short, and a new one is posted each day. Airyn & JM Mantecon, Patrick Lenk, Miledh, Peter Buffett, Karl Jenkins, Michael Nyman, Robert Schroeder, Lethave Plank.

It's rare when an iconic movie musical also happens to be one of the more bizarre watching experiences in our show, and then even more rare when the movie kind of works. Which this movie does…kind of. Look, this was a pretty legendary failure, and yet with every single thing going against it, this movie is so consistently bonkers it actually manages to pull out of its tailspin. A lot of that has to do with the phenomenal, immensely talented cast who squeeze every bit of potential enjoyment out of this movie. Just don't expect a lot, even from a legendary Hollywood director - he was too busy drinking and ignoring the film. Oscars '82 continues this week with Annie on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! This Christmas, to celebrate 50 years since Jesus Christ Superstar first opened on Broadway, we've dedicated an entire episode to unwrapping its magic. What is it about the rock opera that makes it, as one Times critic wrote, ‘the one masterpiece of Lloyd Webber's career'? Why, after five decades, does it still give pause for theological thought? And how can one piece of music connect such disparate-seeming artists as Dmitri Shostakovich, Googoosh, Lin Mannuel Maranda, and Kanye West? Featuring interviews with Sirs Tim Rice and Karl Jenkins, Alain Boublil, Peaches and Nico Muhly, this is … The Jesus Christ Superspecial.… Buy us a coffee innit: https://ko-fi.com/classicalpod … Follow us here: instagram.com/classicalpod/ twitter.com/ClassicalPod facebook.com/ClassicalPod/

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is Britain's most successful contemporary composer, Karl Jenkins. He is most famous for developing a style that fuses his classical background with his interest in jazz and world music and his albums top the charts around the world. He was brought up in a small Welsh village and, after his mother died, lived with his father, grandmother and widowed aunt. His father taught him the piano when he was a child and in his teens he gravitated towards the oboe and went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music. His first musical career was as a jazz musician - he won first prize at the Montreux Jazz Festival and played venues as diverse as Carnegie Hall and Ronnie Scott's. In the 1980s, he gave up life on the road and started writing advertising music and jingles. More awards followed, but he felt cramped by the nature of the work and wanted to write music that was more expansive. A track which he'd written for a minute long commercial went on to become the corner-stone of his most well-known work, The Adiemus Project. He's said that it was only then that he realised his niche lay in composing work that was grounded in his classical upbringing but also benefited from his interest in jazz and world music. And, while critics have on occasion sneered at his work, he has collected countless gold and platinum discs and a worldwide audience.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: The Final trio from the third Act of Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss Book: The Michelin Guide to France by Michelin Luxury: A piano
