//The Wire//2030Z July 25, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: RUSSIAN, CHINESE BOMBERS INTERCEPTED IN ALASKA ADIZ. IRAN MAKES MAJOR PROGRESS WITH RAIL LOGISTICS NETWORKS. INDICATORS MOUNT REGARDING POTENTIAL ISRAELI INVASION OF LEBANON.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Western Asia: Iran celebrated the opening of the Rasht-Caspian Railway, a major rail project in Iran's northern Gilan province. High ranking Russian officials were present at the inauguration event in the Iranian city of Rasht. This project completes one of the major segments of the larger project, the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which is intended to link the Caspian Sea with the Persian Gulf. This event takes place on the heels of another separate (but also significant) rail logistics network becoming operational in the eastern districts of Iran.Red Sea/HOA: Tensions between Italy and the Houthi-controlled government in Yemen have increased following Israeli airstrikes last week. The Italian Air Force provided aerial refueling for the Israeli aircraft that conducted the strikes in the Yemeni port city of Hudaydah. In response, the Houthis have threatened to target the Italian base in Djibouti if Italy continues to militarily support Israel.Middle East: Following PM Netanyahu's address to Congress, rhetoric has shifted to indicate an increasing likelihood of an Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Various Israeli officials overnight increased such rhetoric, along with military officials claiming that military preparations for such an invasion are complete. AC: In this war, rhetoric is nearly meaningless as all sides have frequently made false claims. Israeli politicians call for increasing military operations daily, and various IDF spokespersons have stated that preparations for an invasion are “complete” at least four times over the past few months. Nevertheless, the implications and sentiments expressed during PM Netanyahu's visit to Congress have led many to theorize that Netanyahu has (in effect) been given the “green light” for such an invasion. This idea will be impossible to confirm with any reliability, however even before Netanyahu's very specifically timed visit, the U.S. was unlikely to intervene when/if Israel decides to carry out a land-based advance in to Lebanon. On the other side of the wire, Hezbollah is not doing Lebanon any favors, with many missile and rocket strikes being carried out targeting Israeli cities. For the most part Hezbollah has mostly engaged in harassing attacks, with more substantial rocket attacks being triggered in response to particularly egregious Israeli actions in Gaza. However, as tensions remain perched on the knife edge between the conflict simmering down, and expanding greatly, it would not take much for a conflagration to occur in the region (even by accident) which allows Israel more leeway in the international arena to conduct operations in Lebanon.-HomeFront-New Jersey: Senator Bob Menendez has resigned from the US Senate (effective Aug. 20) following his bribery convictions. AC: As a reminder, Menendez was convicted of 16 felony counts of bribery for accepting cash and gold payments from Egyptian and Qatari agents, in exchange for services rendered in Congress that benefit the interests of these governments.Washington D.C. – Cleanup operations following yesterday's demonstrations/unrest have begun as many monuments, buildings, and other structures were defaced by demonstrators. Criticism of the handling of the unrest has been mounting as very few of the violent demonstrators (specifically those who defaced monuments) were arrested. This morning the US Park Police issued a statement explaining that only 29 officers were designated for crowd control, which prevented any sort of mass arrest operation from being feasible.California: This morning Governor Newsom signed Executive Order N-1-24, which mandates the

The latest breakthrough in this field revolves around the potential role of iron particles in the formation of organic compounds, which paved the way for the appearance of life on Earth. . Fungal Threats and the Last of Us Zombie apocalypses may seem like a figment of fiction, but the science behind some fungi's ability to manipulate animal behavior is quite real. These fungi can pose significant threats to animals and have a profound impact on their behavior and actions, bringing into focus the idea of infectious, zombie-like control over them. In the SpaceTime podcast, host Stuart Gary and guest Tim Mendham explore the fascinating world of fungal threats to animals. Citing a study about a fungus called alpha cordisps unilateralis, they discussed its impact on ants: forcing them to climb up plants, drop down, and then spread more of the fungi. While it may not transform animals into actual zombies, the duo emphasized the potential risks some fungi pose and their consequences on affected species. For more SpaceTime visit https://www.spacetimewithstuartgary,com

Virgin Galactic has completed improvements to its VSS Unity spaceplane. The company plans to restart a passenger flight program this year, the company said Tuesday. Virgin Galactic suspended flights of the Unity and its carrier plane, the VMS Eve, in 2021 to work on the craft. The VSS Unity launches from the surface of the Eve after that plane carries the spacecraft up. Virgin Galactic was founded in 2004 by billionaire Richard Branson. Virgin Galactic chief Michael Colglazier said the company's goal for the near future is to safely provide flights on a usual basis. The company wants to give both researchers and space tourists “an unrivaled experience,” he said. In February, Galactic made the first test flight of its carrier plane since 2021. The company is planning “two or three” test flights before any passenger transports, Colglazier said. The first flight will center on research for the Italian Air Force. The company hopes to do monthly flights after that to serve the 800 customers who have already purchased trips on the spaceplane. In February, Galactic re-opened ticket sales to the public. The cost of a flight is about $450,000 per person. The spaceplane is to fly passengers about 80 kilometers above Earth where they will spend about 10 minutes in low gravity. The spaceplane will then return home, landing in a way similar to that of a traditional airplane. The VMS Unity and its carrier plane take off and land in the state of New Mexico. Richard Branson's spaceship has been grounded It turns out the test flight wasn't as successful as we thought it was. The New Yorker reports that after the craft detached and was blasting off to space traveling at twice the speed of sound, the onboard pilots got yellow and red warning lights to indicate the spaceship wasn't vertical enough to make it back to earth safely. The plane uses the momentum of the accent to then set it up for its glide back to the runway on earth. The FAA says the plane veered outside its approved airspace for over a minute. Episode 31 – F-35 Lightning II with Allies and Partners: Pilots' Perspective Episode Summary: In episode 31 of the Aerospace Advantage, F-35 Lightning II with Allies and Partners: Pilots' Perspective, join host John “Slick” Baum as he speaks to a selection of international pilots who are taking to the sky in the F-35 Lightning II. A core facet of the F-35's design from day one involved seamless integration with allies and partners. It was always about bringing the advantages of 5th gen combat airpower to a broad team. Today, we are realizing that vision. History demonstrates that nations don't engage in large scale warfare in a vacuum. So, the way we build and employ airpower capabilities needs to reflect that. Hear from Squadron Leader Stewart Campbell of the Royal Air Force, Lt Col Maurizio “Driver” De Guida of the Italian Air Force, and Lt Col Gert Barend “Razor” Van Woerden of the Royal Netherlands Air Force about what it's like to bring 5th generation combat aviation to their respective air forces. Important decisions can be complex and difficult to make. We're at the mercy of certain behavioral biases, and we often face a degree of uncertainty. And while it's helpful to be aware of our shortcomings and mindful of our incomplete picture of the world, there is a proven way to make better decisions, on balance. In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at how questioning our basic assumptions and thinking like a scientist can help us untangle the knottiest of problems and make choices with greater confidence.Luca Parmitano was the first Italian astronaut to perform an EVA—an extravehicular activity, otherwise known as a space walk—in 2013. During that EVA, Luca noticed a small amount of excess moisture in his space suit. Engineers chalked it up to a minor leak in his drinking container. But on his second EVA, Luca nearly drowned in space. You'll hear from Luca himself about what happened and what it was like to have his helmet fill with water, 250 miles above the earth, outside the International Space Station. You'll also hear how NASA worked to prevent a repeat of what has been called “the scariest wardrobe malfunction” in the agency's history. Luca Parmitano is an astronaut with the European Space Agency and a colonel in the Italian Air Force.A version of Luca's story appears in Adam Grant's new book Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know.Adam Grant joined Katy to talk about the methods scientists use to avoid certain pitfalls, such as confirmation bias, in the search for objective information. Rather than treat our beliefs or opinions as truths, Adam encourages us to treat them instead as hunches. Hunches can be tested, as scientists test their hypotheses. Taking this scientific approach to difficult problems often yields better results in business, politics, and life.Adam Grant is the Saul P. ‘’Make your life a dream, and a dream a reality’’ – Antoine de St Exupéry Our dear Italian friend Fabio Guerra definitively lived up and still lives the Dream of aviation! Born and raised in Verona – Italy, Fabio Guerra always dreamt about flying the mighty F104 Starfighter. After joining the Accademia Aeronautica – the Italian Air force Academy and climbing up the ladder to a fighter jet office desk, he very soon had the opportunity to move to the United States of America as an exchange pilot in the US Air Force. Flying mostly T-38 White Rockets out of Reese AFB Texas and then Holloman AFB New-Mexico, Fabio decided to purchase an extremely rudimentary and light Quicksilver MX together with a young fellow American fighter pilot. This was the discovery and birth of a new consuming passion for very slow flying airplanes. Coming back to Italy in the mid 80´s and transitioning to his beloved F104 Starfighter, Fabio discovered the freedom allowed to UL/LSA aircrafts which were, back then, considered as sporting equipment. He decided to acquire a single seat Aeromarine Buccaneer XA flying boat and explore his home region lakes, among them the famous Lago di Garda – Garda Lake and rivers. For almost fifteen years, Fabio flew Mach 2 during the week and under 100 kph (60 mph) during the weekend. Wanting to fly even slower and land safer on water with his flying boat, Fabio started to experiment new wing designs which finally led him to meet his now friend of more than twenty years, Pasquale Russo, the CEO of Zlin Aviation s.r.o and creator of the Zlin Savage taildragger bush plane family. Having left the Italian Air Force as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the beginning of the 2000´s and then started to work (fly) for the national airline company Alitalia, Fabio purchased an early Zlin Savage Classic, named EXPLORER, and discovered the endless possibilities of flying playground offered by this already very capable little taildragger. Still wanting to experiment slower and slower flight with VGs as well as new equipment such as Alaskan Bushwheels, he soon started a long cooperation together with Zlin Aviation as a test pilot. Almost ten years ago, Fabio came back to his love about float planes by being one of the first in Europe to put his Zlin Savage on floats. Today, Fabio is a flight captain flying B777 for Alitalia, a rescue pilot for the Protezione Civile – the civil protection with his EXPLORER, the head instructor pilot of Scuola Volo Brescia, Garda Eagle – Brescia Flight School specialized in taildraggers, float and bush flying as well as a flight examiner but most of all for him “every way of flying is beautiful!”. In this episode, Fabio shares with us his story about dreaming to fly the mighty F104 Starfighter and making this dream a reality to discovering the endless possibilities offered by UL/LSA airplanes both on (bush) wheels and floats to fly in Italy, especially in his home regions of Veneto and Lombardia. If you want to watch Fabio in action with his Zlin Savage EXPLORER on floats or test flying the new Zlin Aviation aircrafts, go to this episode's page on our website www.thestolcollective.com Music credits: “Slowly”, Amon Tobin – Supermodified, 2000 Cover photography:

Porco Rosso! The crimson pig! A heart of gold! Skies of blue! Islands of green! Why are we shouting?! Because this film has got it all: action, romance, wistful staring, aerial dogfights, and background paintings that’ll make your heart hurt. Studio Ghibli’s ‘Porco Rosso’ is about a bounty hunter flying ace who protects the Adriatic Sea from villainous seaplane pirates. Porco’s in it for the money (or so he says), but the people in his life know that he’s the same heroic man beneath it all. Will he outrun the Italian Air Force? Will he prevail against brash American pilot Curtis? Will the beautiful Gina ever see the man she knows as Marco return to peace? Only Hayao Miyazaki knows but he graciously wrote it down so we can find out. Start your engines and hit the skies! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/framesandfools/message

Guido Adelfio on his passion for travel - "It's hard work. It's a lot of energy to fly to Europe for three days, do stuff the whole time, and fly home and head right back to the office, but I love it. The beneficiaries of that are our clients." Guido Adelfio, Global Travel Expert, Bethesda Travel A Ockershausen: We have a special guest here today for Our Town. A man who knows Our Town and probably knows your town and their town and every town. It's Guido Adelfio from Bethesda Travel, a very, very dear friend of WMAL for so many years. Guido, where did Bethesda Travel start? Guido Adelfio: Good morning, Andy! A Ockershausen: We did that already. Guido Adelfio: We did that? A Ockershausen: It's not morning, it's night. La Familigia, Antonio and Margaret Adelfio, and Bethesda Travel Guido Adelfio: Thanks for having me. Bethesda Travel started in a dream of my parents. In 1961, my father was working for Air France. A Ockershausen: He had been in the Italian Air Force. Guido Adelfio: He had been in the Italian Air Force. He was trained as a lawyer. They met in Capri, believe it or not. Got married here in the States. Went back to Italy. I was born. Back to Canada. A Ockershausen: I've been to your place where you were born, if you remember that. Guido Adelfio: That's right. That's true. A Ockershausen: I loved it. Guido Adelfio: Then, we stayed a few years in Canada. He got his law degree. Came to the States, practiced as a lawyer then started working for Air France. He was doing very well. The way I heard it, I was a child at the time, there was a promotion. Well, the French guy got the promotion and the Italian guy was left sitting at the desk. He said, "The heck with this. I'm going to start my own business." That was in December of 1961. A Ockershausen: Oh my god . . .that's 70-some years ago. Guido Adelfio: Well, not quite, but ... A Ockershausen: Feels like 70 years. Guido Adelfio: Almost 60. A Ockershausen: Guido, but did he start in Bethesda? Guido Adelfio: In Bethesda, right on Waverly Street. If you're familiar with the Vamoose Bus? A Ockershausen: Yes. Guido Adelfio: Where it stops on that same block, we had a rented office. In the day, it was the Suburban Trust Bank Building. Nearby, you had the Hot Shops. No metro yet. Bethesda's really changed. A Ockershausen: You mentioned two businesses that don't exist anymore. Guido Adelfio: Correct. A Ockershausen: Suburban Trust and Hot Shop. Guido Adelfio: There was also a Dart Drug. A Ockershausen: That's what happens. Guido Adelfio: There was a Dart Drug and a Grand Union. There was a Grand Union. A lot of stuff. A Ockershausen: Guido, when he started in the business, it was a different world, of course. He was on the ground floor of what was going to be the future, is travel. Guido Adelfio: Correct. A Ockershausen: I mean, people who help other people travel. Guido Adelfio: Absolutely. A Ockershausen: He was really on the ground floor. What Stamps Had to Do With It Guido Adelfio: When he was in University, he had two experiences, actually, three. One as a child. His uncles had a shipping agency. They used to bring home, this was a kid in the '30s in Italy, Mussolini was in charge. They used to bring home stamps from all over the world, decorated stamps. Sri Lanka, Brazil, Finland. As a child, that wakened him up that there was a world outside of Palermo, Sicily. A Ockershausen: Amazing. Guido Adelfio: Absolutely. That woke up his imagination. Then, after the war, he went in the Air Force. Then, he was in University. At that time, he had two jobs. One was, I think he thought he would meet more girls, but he got a job at the fledging Club Med that started right after the war as a tour guide. A Ockershausen: A Club Med! Guido Adelfio: Taking people, French visitors, it was called "Club Maaseik," at the time. This was '48, '49. Then, he morphed that into a job at the train station in Palermo assisting travelers who had com...

Strategic bombing became a reality in World War I with both Zeppelin and fixed-wing crews attacking infrastructure targets and even civilian populations. Fiorello La Guardia, congressman from New York and future mayor of New York City, led about 100 Americans that flew Italian-built Caproni bombers for the Italian Air Force. While he used his political influence in ways few U.S. Army captains have ever experienced, he also trained and equipped bomber crews that flew 65 bombing missions for Italy. The bomber advocates became dedicated aerial reconnaissance advocates as well, because when the crews took their own strike photos, it validated their mission and existence. Intelligence people had to learn to interpret those strategic strike photos from bombers and zeppelins — that was the beginning of strategic Bomb Damage Assessment (BDA).
