Cavendish research director James McCormack talked with Proactive about the UK North Sea oil and gas sector and the far-reaching consequences of the Energy Profits Levy (EPL). McCormack detailed how the EPL, originally introduced in 2022 as a temporary 25% measure, has since evolved into a 38% tax lasting through 2030, creating significant investment uncertainty. He explained, “The tax rate in the UK has gone from 40% in 2021 to 78% in its current state,” highlighting the shift as a major deterrent for continued exploration and production. The interview covers how this fiscal environment has accelerated production decline and increased the UK's reliance on imports, leaving households and businesses exposed to international energy price volatility. Cavendish attributes declining output to reduced capital expenditure, citing record-low exploration in 2024 with just four wells drilled. McCormack also discussed ongoing government consultations, including those on Scope 3 emissions, fiscal regimes, and licensing policies. He noted the environmental trade-offs of increased imports, which can be up to four times more emissions-intensive than domestic production. He warned that further inaction or policy instability could see the North Sea become a "stranded opportunity," with early field closures, rising decommissioning liabilities, and a significant risk of skilled workforce loss. For GPs, testing patients is their “bread and butter”. This week, we discuss the “better safe than sorry” attitude towards testing, which is so common among doctors – are we guilty of over-testing purely out of force of habit, or are we worried about missing something vital, and therefore find reassurance in doing them? How should we interpret test results, and how do these results affect the way we manage our patients? And, with the huge focus on COVID-19 testing in the media, how do we communicate the current risks and uncertainties surrounding it to our patients? Our guests: James McCormack is a professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia, and the co-host of a popular weekly podcast called Best Science (BS) Medicine podcast. His work focuses on helping healthcare professionals to understand medical data, by taking the best available evidence and making it as simple and practical as possible. Despite lingering market uncertainties, Fitch Ratings still has most of Asia's sovereign credit rated stable or positive. Global Head of Sovereigns James McCormack spoke to us on the sidelines of Fitch's Global Sovereign Conference about who's rated positive, who came out negative, how tricky it is for China to balance deleveraging and stimulus, and how the trade war affects their outlook on Singapore.
James McCormack, Head of Sovereign Ratings and Stephen Schwartz, Head of Asia-Pacific Sovereign Ratings, provide a preview of key issues that will be discussed at Fitch’s Global Sovereign Conferences taking place in Asia, Europe and the U.S. during the weeks of September 9th and 16th. Issues include the growth implications of the China-US trade war, and policy space across Asia for stimulus, if required, in light of risks to the growth outlook. Check out the events page on Fitchratings.com for more information and conference registration.
James started his first company with just €500 which was borrowed from his wife after losing his job in the 2008 financial crash. This small investment launched a catering empire that spanned coffee shops, Mexican food outlets, and corporate catering. He then lost it all. We hear how James bounced back by becoming the Barista Baron and how he is now on the way to creating a global coffee business. James is now the owner of The Dublin Barista School, 9th Degree Coffee and soon to be launched, World Barista Institute.
Dr. James McCormack received his undergraduate pharmacy degree at the University of British Columbia in 1982 and completed a hospital pharmacy residency program at Lion's Gate Hospital in North Vancouver in 1984. He received his doctorate in pharmacy (Pharm.D.) in 1986 from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, South Carolina. He has had extensive experience, both locally and internationally, talking to health professionals and consumers about the rational use of medication, has presented over 300 seminars on drug therapy over the last 15 years. His focus is shared-informed decision-making using evidence based information and rational therapeutic principles. In addition, he has published over 100 articles in the medical literature, mainly in the area of rational drug therapy and has been an editor for two internationally recognized textbooks on appropriate/rational drug therapy.

Accelerating private investment, tightening labor markets, pro-cyclical US fiscal easing and accommodative monetary policy are all supporting above-trend growth in advanced economies. While China’s growth rate is holding up better than expected so far in the face of slowing credit growth; Russia and Brazil continue to recover slowly.

They highlight that political and governance issues were the driving or supporting factors in a cumulative 47% of sovereign downgrades, rating crises, or defaults from 1997 to present. They point to current political events that may negatively affect ratings such as: • Activity in the Korean Peninsula • The Gulf and wider Middle Eastern tensions • US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal • Global oil prices

James McCormack's medical music video parodies have become legendary in evidence-based medicine circles. Rarely have such complex concepts as evidence-based medicine, overdiagnosis, surrogate markers and shared decision-making been conveyed so effectively, so simply, so creatively, so humorously - not only to doctors, but to the general public. Listen here, but see some of the videos on our blog at http://www.healthnewsreview.org/?p=60070

Joining us are Dr. Walter Gutowski who is a specialist in Chiropractic Applied Kinesiology with a 27 year career in health and natural healing, and James S. McCormack, founder of Trucking Careers of America. James is a ten year veteran as a career advisor and job placement specialist for OTR truckers nationwide, as well as an advocate for improving truck driver health and their quality of life. Studies have shown that truck drivers have increased health risks and it is widely believed that the majority of these health issues are job related. Many truck drivers use various types of stimulants to increase energy and stamina to stay awake, and other aids to help fall asleep. These kinds of stimulants and aids can not only be expensive, but dangerous as well. Our guests will explain why AgeLOC Vitality is an excellent alternative. Unlike many products currently on the market, ageLOC Vitality is not designed to provide a quick fix or boost. Instead, it is formulated to raise and maintain a person's baseline energy level for a sustained increase in overall vitality. As some trucking companies are beginning to take an active approach towards improving the health of drivers, such as in drivers' wellness programs, AgeLOC has shown to improve physical and mental performance, as well as revitalizing the overall loss of energy that often is related to health issues associated with the hardships placed on the professional truck driver. A percentage of proceeds from ageLOC Vitality go to Nourish The Children, a program that feeds more than 91,000 needy children worldwide each day.
Are you a CDL student, graduate or even experienced truck driver unable to find a truck driving job? Allen welcomes James McCormack to the show. As founder of Trucking Careers of America, they are dedicated to working for you and not for the trucking companies. Never a fee for their services, Mr. McCormack will take your questions and explain how Trucking Careers of America can get you hired and back in the driver seat. You will NOT want to MISS this show!
