The variety of practice models in the United States emergency healthcare system is numerous and most of them involve both physicians as well as advanced practice providers (physician assistants and nurse practitioners). Yet, the preparation for how to supervise an APP from a physician perspective, or what to expect from a physician colleague from the APP perspective is not standardized. In this chapter, we sit down with Dr. Eric Boie who is the current medical director for the APP practice at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as well as Mr. Jeff Wood, PA-C who has been the supervisor of the APPs both in our health system as well in Rochester for nearly a decade until just recently - to discuss our current model of practice, how it supports resident education, how to support APPs autonomy and optimize patient care, how to handle when things don't go as planned and more.    CONTACTS X - @AlwaysOnEM; @VenkBellamkonda YouTube - @AlwaysOnEM; @VenkBellamkonda Instagram – @AlwaysOnEM; @Venk_like_vancomycin; @ASFinch Email - AlwaysOnEM@gmail.com   RELATED READING Clark A, Amanti C, Sheng AY. Tom Wood Automotive Group is one of the best-known family businesses in central Indiana, with more than a dozen car dealerships and 1,000 employees. But relatively few people have heard of Jeff Wood, who took over the company after Tom Wood, his father, died from lung cancer in 2010. Jeff Wood grew up in central Indiana and worked in the family business for a while, but he found his calling in the United States Air Force. He served for 20 years as a combat pilot who flew F-16s. As nerve-wracking as it might be to fly an armed aircraft at 1,400 miles per hour at an altitude of 40,000 feet, Jeff Wood wasn't entirely prepared for the white-knuckle ride of taking over a huge family business at the request of his father. It's been more than a dozen years since Jeff Wood became company president, and he has used that time to diversify Tom Wood Automotive Group—often following his own interests to see where they lead. In this week's edition of the IBJ Podcast, he discusses his dad, flying F-16s and the hair-raising transition to company leader in 2010. It's been a tough year for the car sales industry, and Wood provides an insider's look and a sense of how the group is trying to ride out the turbulence. And he provides a 30,000-foot view of this sprawling conglomerate and how he has been able to keep aviation in his life—flying as often as once per week. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

Burgess is a forensic nurse who pioneered research on SA and trauma in the 1970s and '80s, and more recently she helped the FBI's newest behavioral science unit, or BSU, team better understand serialists as in people who do in multiple people on multiple occasions…the Ted Bundys and Richard Specks of the world. The BSU, or “Mindhunters,” has been interviewing serialists in an attempt to prevent similar brutal crimes in the future. The other panelists included Dr. Gary Brucato of Columbia University. Brucato is a Clinical Psychologist, Researcher, and Author who specializes in the areas of early psychosis, violence, and other serious psychopathology and who has been studying how violent thoughts and actions emerge in psychotic versus non psychotic persons. And finally a retired FBI special agent named Jeff Wood out of Boston. From our listeners or from parents who are utilizing the SwimAble platform. Our questions like this. How do I speed up the process and get my child to learn how to swim faster? So I’m super excited to dive into today’s episode. The reality here is that in today’s world, we are all too happy to pay a bit more in exchange for ne. To do a bit less. You see, we’d rather pay extra to have someone else take care of things for us. And it seems like this is the case right now in the marketplace. Swimming lessons have been no different. That is really the goal of what we’re looking to change. With the SwimAble platform. And so I’m really Jim really excited to dive into this episode today. You know, I’m glad parents are thinking about it because for most kids, they’re learning to swim process starts and stops at swimming lessons. So parents have really three things to do with their kids are enrolled in swimming lessons. Most of the time some parents go above and beyond, but it goes like this sign up for the swimming lessons and pay for those swimming lessons. Drive your kid to the program. Sit back and relax and watch. That’s how most kids learn how to swim. They’re not getting any help outside. Of swimming lessons and you know, as in most things in life, we pay for that what’s that convenience that the ability to, to pass off to somebody else and have them do something for us and with swimming lessons, you really pay for that convenience in a number of ways. The two biggest ones are your time and your hard earned money. And if you’re not doing these five easy things with your beginner swimmer outside of swimming lessons, or in general, if you decide not to do swimmin

Are you ready to rock? I’m super ready to rock and roll. I’m really excited to talk about this topic. It’s a very confusing topic for parents and you know, what we’ve noticed in, in owning a swim school for as long as we have is that more and more parents every year. Welcome to the podcast designed to equip parents around the world to help their children discover how to swim. And welcome to part two of at what age, how long does it take for kids to learn to swim? If you haven’t already go back and listen to part one where Jim and Jeff breakdown a study from the Australian journal of science and medicine in sport to show us exactly at what age and how many swimming lessons it takes for each age to learn front crawl swimming. How many swimming lessons do you need a two years old and how many swimming lessons do you need at eight years old for each child be able to learn freestyle. If you’re joining us again, here’s a little recap from that conversation. It is July and that means we are about halfway through the swim season and about halfway through the amount, the traditional Lincoln, the time that parents are involved in organized swimming lessons. And so if you are listening to this podcast and your child is involved in swimming lessons, you got to ask the question. Can your child swim yet because of those swimming lessons. And that really correlates to the second question, which probably I should have asked first, but nonetheless, is, is your child safe yet when they are swimming in your pool or your lake or going to any body of water, are they safe yet? You know, I don’t think most parents get into swimming lessons. With an idea of what to expect, or even at, with the endpoint in mind of what is SAFER. Okay. So they sign up, they go, oh my gosh, my kid can’t swim and they’re not safe. I need to make them safer ASAP, which means I need to teach them how to swim. And what this study found  is age seems to be a driving factor for the rate of progression. Meaning the more developed a child is typically on average, not in all cases, but on average, They will learn quicker and I’ll go one step further, most likely retain that information better. And now let’s jump back into part two of at what age and how long does it take for kids to learn to swim with Jim and Jeff Wood. Right now swim schools, pressure parents from the age of six months saying. Some start at four months, four months, four months. I’m sorry. We have got a really epic episode for everyone tuning in. We have two really important questions at this point in the year that we like to ask question, number one, can your child swim yet? It is July and. That means we are about halfway through the swim season and about halfway through the amount, the traditional length of time that parents are involved in organized swimming lessons. And so if you are listening to this podcast and your child is involved in swimming lessons, you got to ask the question: can your child swim yet because of those swimming lessons? And that really correlates to the second question, which probably I should have asked first, but nonetheless, is, is your child safe yet when they are swimming in your pool or your lake or going to any body of water, are they safe yet? And that really correlates to that first question is can they swim yet? And so we want to unpack those two questions, give you an idea of why we’re asking those questions and then point you towards, well, what can we do about it. If the answer to either or both of those questions is no, my child, I don’t think my child’s safe yet or no, my child can’t swim yet . We got to unpack that and drive you towards how we provide a solution for you. If the answer to either of those questions are no, I love that this is it’s a topic really near and dear to my heart because you know, when we started The Swim Re

Welcome on in to the Swim Discovery podcast. Brought to you by SwimAble.com. We are your hosts, Jim Wood and Jeff Wood, and man, oh man. Do we have a good episode for you today? If you are like the millions of parents who sign their children up for swimming lessons, you are trying to solve two problems as quickly as possible right? Problem number one, your child can’t swim. And that leads into problem. Number two, which is that means that they’re not safe in the water. And so today we are thrilled to do this episode so we can shine some light on the five problems that parents are going to face when trying to combat those two core issues. Yeah. That’s awesome. Jeff, I’m really excited about this topic because, look Jeff’s right. Parents have ,all the millions of parents who send their kids up for swimming lessons every year, always having the same two problems they’re trying to solve their kid can’t swim. And that means they’re not safe. And you’re looking for a solution, which is I need my kid to learn to swim so I can make them safer ASAP. And you know, today we’re going to be talking about the five big pitfalls of swimming lessons and why they’re not good and be able to solve at least one of those major problems. And once you find out the truth of these five big pitfalls, it might leave you rethinking swimming lessons and reconsidering. If that’s the best option for your family. And then at the end, we’re going to give you a better option. That absolutely solves both of your problems immediately. Okay. So let’s just dive right in point number one, this is probably the biggest pitfall swimming lessons in mind. Is that swimming lessons cannot and will not ever make your child safer ASAP. They cannot do it. Okay. There is a learning. Wait, what? I’ll say it again. Swimming lessons cannot and will not make your child safer, ASAP. Okay. So you had those two big problems. Your kid can’t swim. You need to make your kids say for ASAP. You want them safer right now. Like three trips to the pool ago, not next year, not at the end of summer, you know, you, you need to ASAP, okay. Swimming lessons cannot do that. And I want to explain to you why. And that’s because there is a learning process to swimming lessons and actually a few of our pitfalls are going to tie tie into this same concept and that’s. Here’s the deal. It takes an average of 20 to 30 swim lessons for the average, three to five year old to learn to swim five numbers. On their own. So five yards independently, that’s a lot of swimming lessons. Okay. That’s, that’s like six to seven months of once a week swimming lessons, which by the way, that’s the normal for how many times a kid goes to swimming lessons in an average wee

Everyone has a story or they know someone or they’ve been involved in a situation and they’re somewhat connected to a near drowning incident. TYR LifeVest: https://swimable.com/product/tyr-progressive-training-aid/ – Get Started with SwimAble Kid today: https://swimable.com/product/swimable-kid/ – Free Resources: https://swimable.com/free-resources/ – Blog: https://blog.swimable.com/the-5-freedoms-of-swim-discovery – Transcript: 006- Near Drowning Incident: How do we prevent this again? Welcome on everyone to the SwimAble.com livestream. We are your hosts, Jim Wood and Jeff Wood. And as I typically have a massive amount of energy when introducing our conversations, but today’s a really serious livestream that Jim and I wanted to do as one of our members sent over a situation about a near drowning incident that I believe one of her friends recently just encountered and they wanted our advice on the situation. And so we wanted to take this opportunity to go through that so that we could share our input with the entire SwimAble community with the hopes of hopefully educating parents and avoiding situations like this in the future. Obviously when we ask the parents, everyone has a story or they know someone or they’ve been involved in a situation and they’re somewhat connected to a near drowning incident. And so this definitely hits close to home. And so Jim and I are going to give our absolute best effort this morning and breaking down what you can do at home to prevent a situation like this. Jim, is there anything you want to add before we just hop on in? Yeah, so Jeff and I are just going to be having a really candid conversation today and We want to be as sensitive as possible. If this happened to you ever, or somebody close to you that, you know, and for this member who I believe it happened to her sister, this near drowning for her I think, I think her. Her niece is three and a half. She saw it in the letter, which we will, get to in a moment here. We want to be sensitive to that, that mom as well. But at the same time, we need to have a real conversation and a very candid conversation so that we can put everything on the table so that you can learn from this experience and be armed with the information to have this not happen in your house with your kids. And so I want to start with that. So we’re going to be as sensitive as we can be, but at the same time, we have to be real with what we’re saying too. And so that’s our goal for today. So what we’re going to do is just read through the note that this member left us and we’ll just read through it once all the way. And then we’ll take it line item by line item and Jeff and I are going to give you guys our thoughts based off of experience, research. And yeah, I guess that that’ll be the plan. So I’m going to do my absolute best to keep all names out of this and try not to scroll at all. So we keep some anonymity here. But so let’s just read it through. For anybody who doesn’t know, all of our members have direct access to Jeff. Through a members only Facebook group. And so if you are SwimAble kid member, you can join that group and get direct access to Jeff and I, and ask any of your questions related to drowning, water, safety, swimming, lessons, whatever. And and we do videos like this for you. So here we go. I have a question. Comment, concern, not sure how to word this. So it might be long. Monday evening my three-and-a-half yea
