May 18th is the anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising, when the citizens of Gwangju launched an armed uprising against South Korea's military regime. On October 26, 1979, South Korea's longtime military dictator, Park Chung Hee was assassinated by his own head of secret police, ending the infamous Yushin regime. However, in December of that year, General Chun Do Hwan, chief of South Korea's internal security seized power in his own coup d'tat.  On May 15 1980, students in Seoul organized mass demonstrations demanding an end to Martial Law, which had been declared after Park's assassination. Chun responded by expanding martial law to the whole nation, including the island of Jejudo. Student leaders decided to end the protests in order to discuss their next moves. This week, Judy and Linda examine the sageuk framework by watching "Tree with Deep Roots" (뿌리깊은 나무) and "Moon Embracing the Sun" (해를 품은 달).  "Tree with Deep Roots" is a 2011 SBS drama, starring Jang Hyuk, Song JoongKi, Han SukKyu, Shin SeKyung and Jo JinWoong. This is a straightforward sageuk about a revered historical figure. We take a quick look at the early Joseon kings (19:17) and why King Sejong deserves the title, "Great King" (37:24). "Moon Embracing the Sun" is a 2012 MBC drama, starring Kim SooHyun, Han GaIn and Jung IlWoo. This is set in a fictional version of Joseon, and focuses more on the prophecy entwining the three main characters into a love triangle. Le régime impérial nippon a ouvert le port de Gunsan en 1899 et l’a utilisé pour expédier le riz produit dans la région vers le Japon. Gunsan a ainsi servi de centre économique pour les marchands japonais depuis la fin du 19ème jusqu’au milieu du 20ème siècle et les marques de leur présence sont toujours visibles dans la ville. Cette semaine nous continuons notre visite de l’île Sorok, le site d'une colonie de lépreux dans la province de Jeolla du Sud. Plus d’un siècle a passé depuis que cette île est devenue une colonie de lépreux, mais au cours de cette longue période Sorokdo a connu une transformation étonnante. La maladie de Hansen, un autre nom pour la lèpre, a été éradiquée en 1992 et le pont Sorok a été achevée en 2009 pour relier le port Nokdong et l’île Sorok, ouvrant l'ancienne colonie de lépreux a un demi-million de touristes par an. Aujourd'hui Kim Ji-yeon, productrice à KBS WORLD Radio, continue de nous faire découvrir la triste mais belle île de Sorokdo qui a choisi la voie de la guérison.

La isla de Sorokdo debe su nombre a que, vista desde las alturas, tiene la forma de un pequeño venado. Gracias al puente que se construyó en 2009, ahora se accede muy fácilmente, pero durante la mayor parte del siglo XX fue un lugar aislado y con una historia sumamente triste. Esta historia comenzó en 1916 cuando el gobierno colonial japonés construyó un hospital para leprosos y recluyó a un centenar de enfermos en la isla.

Di Goheung, Jeolla Selatan, ada sebuah pulau yang diberi nama 'Sorokdo' alias 'Rusa Kecil' karena bentuknya mirip dengan rusa kecil. Pada masa penjajahan Jepang tahun 1917, rumah sakit khusus penyakit Hansen didirikan di pulau itu untuk memisahkan pasien dengan penduduk biasa. Setelahnya, sejarah yang menyayat hati di pulau Sorokdo dimulai. Yuk Keliling Korea memperkenalkan kisah menyedihkan dari pulau Sorokdo yang mengalami diskriminasi di masa lalu.

Mang hình dáng giống chú hươu con, đảo “Tiểu lộc” Sorok với chiều dài 14 km và diện tích 3,74 km2 nằm ở khu vực biển của huyện Goheung, tỉnh Nam Jeolla. Không chỉ có cảnh quan vô cùng tuyệt đẹp, đảo Sorok còn nổi tiếng là một khu du lịch với những câu chuyện lịch sử buồn kéo dài suốt 100 năm về số phận những người mắc bệnh phong bị giam cầm tại đây. Đảo Sorok ngày nay không còn là nơi tập kết bệnh nhân phong, mà đã trở thành chốn bình yên, bao bọc và an ủi những bệnh nhân đang được điều trị trên đảo. Cette semaine, nous vous emmenons dans la mer du Sud, sur l’île Sorok, le site centenaire d'une colonie de lépreux. Sorokdo est une petite île qui ressemble à un petit cerf vu du dessus. Situé dans les eaux du comté de Goheung dans la province de Jeolla du Sud, l'île est devenue facilement accessible après l'achèvement de la construction du pont Sorok en 2009, qui mit fin à son isolement centenaire. L'histoire tragique de l'île en tant que colonie de lépreux a, en effet, commencé en 1916 lorsque le gouvernement colonial japonais y a construit un hôpital et y a déplacé de force 100 patients atteints de lèpre, également connu sous le nom de maladie de Hansen. Kim Ji-Yeon, productrice à KBS WORLD Radio, nous fait découvrir la triste mais belle île de Sorok.

De nos jours, qui n'apprécie pas une bonne tasse de café fraîchement préparée le matin ? Qui n’a pas eu recours à un shot d'espresso puissant pour chasser la somnolence de l'après-midi? Eh bien, pour le plus grand étonnement des amateurs de café, sachez que ce produit est également produit au pays du Matin clair, dans le comté de Goheung situé à l'extrémité sud de la péninsule. Cette semaine, Kim Ji-yeon productrice à KBS WORLD Radio nous propose un petit tour dans une plantation de café où nous dégustons le café cultivé localement.

Anyone would be surprised to learn that coffee is grown in Korea of all places, since coffee plants are known to grow in tropical regions like South America or Africa. Nonetheless, Goheung-gun County in southern Korea is home to roughly 20 coffee farms. This week's trip includes a visit to a coffee farm in Goheung and a sampling of locally produced coffee at the farm's coffee shop, as well as a barista-for-a-day program where visitors learn how to roast and hand-drip coffee.

Cà phê đã trở thành một thứ đồ uống không thể thiếu trong xã hội hiện đại, với sức hấp dẫn ít ai có thể phủ nhận. A veces algunos sitios ruinosos y deteriorados pasan por una transformación y se convierten en lugares de referencia, como Parc de la Villette en París, que es un hermoso parque construido sobre lo que fue un inmenso matadero; o Hay-on-Wye en Gales, donde viejos garajes fueron convertidos en librerías con estilo. Son todos sitios a los que se les insufló el espíritu del arte y la cultura. Hoy conoceremos un sitio semejante en Corea. Se trata de la Aldea de la Cultura y las Artes Samrye, que se encuentra en Wanju, provincia de Jeolla del Norte, donde viejos graneros en desuso fueron transformados en la mayor atracción turística de la zona.

Cette semaine nous nous rendons dans le sud-ouest de la péninsule pour une visite du village Samrye de la culture et des arts. Il arrive que des endroits délabrés soient remodelés et se transforment en nouveaux points d’attraction pour les touristes. Cela a été le cas pour le Parc de la Villette à Paris, ce magnifique parc construit sur le site où se trouvait un immense abattoir, ou encore pour le petit village rural appelé Hay-on-Wye au Pays de Galles, où de vieux garages ont été transformés en librairies. Le point commun de ces transformations est que ces deux endroits sont traversés par l'esprit des arts et de la culture, améliorant leur apparence, leur identité et leur prestige. C’est le cas aussi du village Samrye de la culture et des arts à Wanju, dans la province de Jeolla du nord que Lee Beom-seok, producteur à KBS WORLD Radio, nous invite à découvrir, où des anciens entrepôts de céréales ont été transformé en lieu culturel.

Làng văn hóa nghệ thuật Samrye, huyện Wanju, tỉnh Bắc Jeolla, được xây dựng trên nền đất kho lương thực cũ bị bỏ hoang từ thời Nhật Bản chiếm đóng Bán đảo Hàn Quốc (1910-1945). Ngôi làng đã được chỉ định là di sản văn hóa cận đại của Hàn Quốc và cũng là biểu tượng văn hóa tiêu biểu của địa phương. Gần như bảo tồn nguyên vẹn thiết kế của kiến trúc xưa, bảy gian chứa hàng nơi đây được tôn tạo thành Khu trưng bày nghệ thuật truyền thông thị giác, Xưởng gỗ Kim Sang-nim, Viện trải nghiệm văn hóa… đem đến cho du khách những trải nghiệm độc đáo khi được chiêm ngưỡng những hình ảnh xưa qua các tác phẩm nghệ thuật, trực tiếp làm món đồ gốm đơn giản mà độc đáo, học hỏi những giá trị văn hóa truyền thống như Trà Đạo… Không gian tưởng chừng hoang phế đã được tái sinh thành một địa điểm đẹp, giàu tính nghệ thuật nhưng vẫn đậm chất lịch sử, giúp ngôi làng trở thành một địa điểm khám phá lý tưởng.

Cette semaine nous partons dans le sud-ouest de la Corée du Sud sur les traces d’un chemin de pèlerinage œcuménique.Alors que l'Europe abrite les chemins de Compostelle, un pèlerinage de renommée mondiale, la Corée du Sud possède également une très belle route de pèlerinage dans la province de Jeolla du Nord que Lee Beom-seok, producteur à KBS WORLD Radio, nous fait découvrir dans cette émission.

España posee el mundialmente famoso Camino de Santiago, pero Corea también cuenta con un camino de peregrinación que es posible recorrer a pie en la provincia de Jeolla del Norte. Esta ruta posee 240 km de longitud y se compone de nueve tramos, que transitan por diversos lugares santos para el budismo y el cristianismo. Les invitamos a recorrer el tramo 4º, que comienza en la iglesia católica Nabawi, transcurre por la iglesia protestante Dudong y termina en el solar del antiguo templo budista Mireuksa, atravesando Iksan.

Con đường hành hương ở tỉnh Bắc Jeolla, Hàn Quốc có chín cung đường nhỏ xuyên huyện Wanju, thành phố Jeonju, Gimje và Iksan. Jika ada rute peziarah agama katolik terkenal, yaitu Camino de Santiago di Eropa, di Korea Selatan, juga ada ‘jalan peziarah yang indah di Jeolla Utara.’ Di bulan April ini dimana ada hari peringatan yang terbesar bagi penganut agama Katolik dan Kristen, yaitu Hari Kebangkitan Yesus Kristus, Yuk Keliling Korea memperkenalkan jalur perjalanan dengan berjalan kaki dimana kita berziarah sambil mengeliling berbagai tempat suci agama. Diantara jalur ke-4 dari jalan peziarah yang indah, kita akan mengunjungi Katedral Nabawi di Iksan yang menimbulkan keharmonisan antara bangunan gaya barat dan rumah tradisional Hanok, Gereja Dudong, dan Situs Kuil Mireuksa di era Baekje.

Làng tàu hỏa huyện Gokseong, tỉnh Nam Jeolla, địa điểm du lịch bằng tàu hỏa hơi nước duy nhất ở Hàn Quốc, cũng là nơi mang lại cho khách tham quan trải nghiệm đạp xe trên đường ray ven sông vô cùng thú vị. Thư thái ngồi trên chuyến tàu hỏa chạy chầm chậm, hay thong thả đạp xe trên đường ray cùng những người thân yêu, ngắm nhìn vẻ đẹp của núi non, sông nước hai bên con đường, sẽ trở thành những ký ức không thể nào quên cho những ai ghé thăm nơi đây. Nhờ những di sản văn hóa thời cận đại vẫn được lưu giữ và cảnh đẹp thiên nhiên được bảo tồn, làng Gokseong đã trở thành một trong 50 địa điểm nhất định phải ghé thăm khi đến với Hàn Quốc.

Ngôi làng Hoa mai xinh đẹp tại thành phố Gwangyang, tỉnh Nam Jeolla (miền Tây Nam Hàn Quốc), nằm dưới chân núi Beakun (Bạch Vân) có dòng sông Seomjin chảy qua là một địa điểm du lịch nổi tiếng tại Hàn Quốc. Cứ vào khoảng cuối tháng 3 hàng năm, hàng ngàn bông mai trắng xinh xắn cùng những nụ mai hồng e ấp, lại đua nhau nở rộ trong không gian hữu tình nơi đây, vẽ nên một bức tranh thiên nhiên tuyệt đẹp tựa cõi tiên bồng. Ngôi làng còn được biết đến như quê hương của những quả mơ ngon lành, căng mọng, cùng những các món ăn độc đáo được chế biến từ quả mơ.

Cette semaine, partons à la découverte du village Maehwa à Gwangyang dans le sud-ouest de la Corée du Sud. Maintenant que le froid de l’hiver n’est plus qu’un mauvais souvenir effacé par la douceur des rayon du soleil et les pousses vertes qui commencent à éclore, les fleurs de prunier, appelées « maehwa » en coréen, sont les premières à annoncer l'arrivée du printemps. Leurs jolis pétales blancs réchauffent le cœur des sud-Coréens en attente de chaleur. Accompagnant l'arrivée du printemps tant attendu, nous partons en voyage dans le village de Maehwa à Gwangyang, dans la province de Jeolla du Sud, où des nuages de fleurs blanches de pruniers remplissent les vallées.

Para disfrutar de las flores de ciruelo, las primeras en anunciar la primavera, no hay nada como la Aldea Maehwa de Gwangyang. La sábana blanca de bellas y perfumadas flores que cubre el valle, alegra la vista y el olfato. Pero además, los deliciosos productos que se fabrican a partir de las ciruelas verdes son una fiesta para el paladar. Cuando Hong Ssang Ri, creadora y guardiana de la aldea, recita un poema, realmente invita a disfrutar la llegada de la primavera.

Bagaimana kalau kita menuju Desa Maehwa di Gwangyang untuk menikmati bunga Maehwa yang memberitahukan kabar datangnya musim semi. Di sana, pandangan mata kita akan disajikan dengan pemandangan bunga Maehwa yang terasa seperti awan putih yang menutupi gunung, hidung kita akan disuguhi harum bunga Maehwa, serta mulut kita akan dimanjakan dengan berbagai makanan yang dibuat dari buah Maesil. Mari kita tenggelam dalam nuansa musim semi sambil menikmati puisi oleh master Hong Ssang-ri yang menjaga desa itu dengan kasih sayang mendalam terhadap bunga Maehwa.

Hello! Thanks for joining us for Episode #21 of the Where Else to Go Podcast. Today we'll be talking with Samantha about Namwon, South Korea. Samantha is a travel blogger and is currently teaching ESL in Namwon. She fell in love with the area and wants us to as well. Namwon is about a two hour KTX train ride from Seoul, or a three to four-hour bus ride, depending on traffic. It's an hour from Jeonju, which is rising on the Korean travel lists for its traditional housing (Hanoks). Samantha says that Namwon is a lovely walkable city, but that too many people don't know it exists. For anyone interested in traditional Korean culture, Namwon is the setting for one of Korea's most famous love stories, Chunhyangjeon. (Think of it as Korea's Romeo and Juliet minus the tragic ending.) There's a beautiful park you can wander around called Gwanghallu that has the story laid out, and you can also go to an amusement park based around Chunhyang. If you're interested in nature, Namwon is also one of the cities based around Jiri Mountain (Jirisan), one of Korea's three most important mountains along with Hallasan and Seoraksan. There are a bunch of trails of varying degrees of difficulty, and one notable short one that gives you a beautiful view of the city. If you come in autumn, you'll get rows of fall foliage, and if you come in early spring, you might just catch all the cherry blossoms lining the main river. If you like food, Namwon is also located in Jeollabuk province. The Jeolla provinces are considered the food provinces of Korea, so if you want good Korean food, it's here. Samantha offers the following details (and links) for getting to Namwon: English Hotline Help Take the KTX Train (about two hours) from the Yongsan Station in Seoul to the Namwon Station. Be sure to look for the KTX train as other will take you about twice the time. To take the bus to Namwon, head to the Express Bus Terminal on the Seoul subway. They have self-serve kiosks that include English. The bus takes three to four hours, depending on traffic, and takes a 15-minute rest stop break about halfway through the journey. There are two types of buses, one that has two seats on each side of the aisle (the cheapest) and one that has two seats on one side of the aisle, one on the other (will cost a little more for that extra room). Upon arrival in Namwon, take a taxi to your hotel, nothing should cost more than 5,000 KRW (about $5).
